FORMER world champion Eamonn Coghlan has tipped Mark English to be in medal contention at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer.

The Olympics were postponed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

English is a three-time European medallist and signed with Finn Valley AC earlier this year having completing his medical studies at UCD.

Coghlan, the world 5,000m champion in 1983, finished fourth at two Olympic Games and he believes English has the pedigree to get on the podium.

“I would still have great faith in the likes of Mark English,” said Coghlan.

“I have known Mark since he was 11-12 years of age competing in juvenile going into junior athletics.

“I always felt, even in the last couple of years, he should have achieved more than he has but he’s still only a young man and I’ve no doubt that if he gets his act together he can certainly medal when it comes to the Olympic Games.”

English was a bronze medallist at the 2019 European Indoor Championships in Glasgow, having won silver at the 2015 version in Prague.

At the 2014 European Championships, English won bronze in Zurich and the Letterkenny native has won 14 Irish senior titles.

Upon moving to Finn Valley AC in March, English said: “I’m aware of my record in the sport and I see what others have achieved. I’m very proud of the three European medals. They aren’t easy medals to win. I want to beef that up a bit now.”

TYRES of a large number of cars, parked at private residences, were slashed overnight in housing estates in Ballybofey.

Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating the incidents, which have, they said affected ‘a considerable number of vehicles’.

Officers conducted house-to-house visits in estates including Glenpatrick Park and Sessiagh View.

Some residents were unaware of damage inflicted upon their cars until the arrival of Gardaí to the scene of the rampage.

It is believed that over 20 vehicles were damaged.

A Garda spokesperson told Donegal Daily: “Gardaí are investigating a number of criminal damage incidents relating to cars that occurred in the Glenpatrick Park area of Co. Donegal  on July 5th 2020 at approximately 1.45am.

“Damage was caused to the tyres of a considerable number of vehicles in the area and nearby estates.

“No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.”

Councillor warns of consequences of planned Killea bonfire

THERE are growing fears over a planned bonfire in a housing estate in Killea.

Donegal County Councillor Paul Canning says local residents have contacted him in relocation to the bonfire, which is believed to be planned in the Ashlea Grove estate.

“I would like to inform the residents within this estate that the council are in the process of estate takeover but as of now this green is under the management of its residents,” Cllr Canning said.

“If this bonfire takes place and all of the people that arrive from the neighbouring towns and villages go home, leaving their rubbish, broken bottles, empty beer cans and turn the green into a public toilet, the aftermath will NOT be cleaned up by the Council.

“This is still a private estate.”

Cllr Canning said that the bonfire had been advertised on social media with organisers asking for materials to be collected.

He said: “Most residents don’t want to see something like this. It leaves a mess and brings anti-social behaviour.

“Gardai will be informed along with the fire department. An invoice from the fire department for a callout to a private estate will be the responsibility of the residents as will any insurance claims.”

Donegal County Council are in the process of a takeover of Ashlea Grove.

Cllr Canning has warned that the green area would still be the responsibility of residents, even in the event of a completion of the takeover.

ENDURANCE cyclist Joe Barr overcame sometimes-treacherous conditions to shatter his own Malin-Mizen-Malin record.

The 61-year-old Newtowncunningham native, who now lives in Eglinton, completed the gruelling ride after noon today when he arrived back to Malin Head.

Barr began pedalling from Malin on Friday and finished the challenge in 44 hours and 15 minutes.

“I had a couple of big moments,” he said.

“At one stage, the road was full of diesel oil and I slid in the wrong direction. I was waiting to be spit off like a motorbike, but it wasn’t aggressive and I got away with it. I literally couldn’t see the road

“The wind was so strong on the way down.”

Barr had set the previous record in 2017 but today he was some four hours and 25 minutes faster.

The Malin-Mizen-Malin ride is an astonishing 738 miles.

Barr’s time is still to be verified by the UltraMarathon Cycling Association.

He said: “For the first 200 miles, I couldn’t even see the road. I’ve been training really hard, I was riding seven or eight hours every single day.

“Sometimes you get a perfect day. On Saturday, it felt like one of those days, but I definitely started to run out of gas in the last quarter.”

Barr was crowned the 500-mile world champion in 2017, when he also won his category in two 500-mile races in the Race Across Italy and the Silverstate 500.

In 2018 he secured the overall win in the gruelling 2108km Race Around Ireland for the second time.

DONEGAL sports stars have rowed in behind Finn Harps’ campaign to ‘Bring Football Home’.

With the League of Ireland season set to resume at the end of July, Harps have launched an initiative aimed at making necessary improvements to enable the club host games at Finn Park.

So far, over €21,000 of a €30,000 target has been raised – and some of Donegal’s best-known sporting celebrities have lent their voices to the ‘Bring Football Home’ campaign when they appeared in a promotional video.

“Harps, of course, are a fan based club and most important of all Finn Harps is YOUR club – continue to support them,” says long-time Irish Olympic Team Manager Patsy McGonagle.

“Finn Harps have provided senior football in Donegal since 1969 and some of the finest footballers in Ireland have proudly worn the jersey over the years.”

Professional boxer Jason Quigley, who is ranked number 14 in the WBC world rankings, is a big Harps fan and has urged the north-west public to dig as deep as possible.

Quigley, a regular on the terraces when back home in Ballybofey and who wears the jersey with pride across the world, said: “We want to see a return of football for the fans and with the fans. Donate what you can so we can see football back at Finn Park.”

Manchester City midfielder and Republic of Ireland international Tyler Toland comes from a family steeped in Harps history.

She is the daughter of Maurice Toland, whose two goals against Waterford United in 1996 helped win promotion to the Premier Division for the first time and her great-uncle Bobby managed Harps in the 1980s.

“Our history is who we are and will help us build the future,” Tyler said.

The works required at Finn Park involve modifying the existing dressing rooms and also the provision of additional temporary space in the ground.

All funds raised from the ‘Bring Football Home’ campaign will go towards these upgrade works.

“Finn Harps have always defied the odds; let’s help them to do that again,” said three-time Olympic badminton player Chloe Magee.

Finn Harps legend and current academy director Kevin McHugh, Donegal captain Geraldine McLaughlin and Olympic race-walker Brendan Boyce have also got behind the initiative.

Finn Harps Director Ivan Harvey said: “Thank you to everyone who has donated. We are overwhelmed by the amazing response from all  who have donated and shared our campaign.

“We’ve a bit to go but I am in no doubt with the incredible support and following we have we will get there.

“We can’t wait to get back on the 31st and welcoming you all back to Finn Park in time.”

As an added incentive any ‘Bring Football Home’ donations of €50 or more will have the donor entered into the club’s 500 club draw for the corresponding period and have a chance to win with a weekly prize fund of €500.

All donors of any amount will be entered into a draw for a 2020 club jersey signed by the current squad and a pair of tickets for the next Republic of Ireland home match at which spectators are allowed.

Stroke survivors in Donegal have begun meeting on a virtual level to share support with others affected by stroke in Ireland and internationally.

With many meetings cancelled and personal connections lost due to Covid-19, the online chat groups have emerged as an important space for people to safely discuss their stroke journeys.

The ‘Different Strokes for Different Folks’ group in Donegal has teamed up EnableUs in Dublin and the Cork and West Cork Stroke support groups to launch the virtual meetings. The next session is on 9th July at 7pm.

Stroke survivors can experience a long road to recovery and these meetings serve to remind people that they are not alone. Stroke survivors of all ages are welcome to join the virtual safe space to chat, ease feelings of isolation and enjoy a cuppa together.

Larry Masterson Different Strokes for Different Folks Coordinator, is strongly behind and supportive on the launch of this virtual support group.

He told Donegal Daily, “One of the main obstacles that individuals whose lives have been affected by stroke injury have encountered has been social isolation here in Donegal.

“More than ever we have been impacted by this and it is vital that we remain connected with one another.

“This new virtual support group will act as a catalyst in breaking down these social barriers,” he adds.

The virtual stroke support group will take place twice a month on Zoom and the next session is on 9th July at 7pm

The sessions are open to everyone affected by stroke in Ireland.

Motivational speakers will be joining the session to help uplift and inspire the group at this difficult time.

Larry added, “These sessions will create an opportunity where people have a safe place to talk about anything and everything related to stroke.

“They’ll be able to share ideas and experiences with others who have been affected by the devastating consequences of stroke.”

MURDERED Belfast man Warren Crossan was wanted by Gardaí after he skipped bail in Donegal.

Crossan, believed by police in Northern Ireland to be a senior dissident Republican, was shot dead last weekend in Belfast.

A bench warrant for Crossan was issued in 2018 after he failed to turn up at a sitting of Donegal District Court. Crossan was to appear on theft and burglary charges.

Crossan had been due to face other charges in connection with an incident in Inver in 2017.

When Crossan failed to appear in court in Donegal Town in January 2018, a bench warrant for his arrest was issued.

Last weekend, the 28-year-old was shot a number of times in broad daylight in Rodney Parade, Belfast.

Crossan was the son of Tommy Crossan, a senior dissident who was shot dead in 2014.

The PSNI believe that the shooting of Crossan, a father-of-two, was a revenge for the killing of Robbie Lawlor in April.

Crossan was one of five people arrested and questioned about Lawlor’s murder, but was released without charge.

Poll: Only one in ten Donegal Daily readers plan to go abroad in 2020

It’ll be Costa del Donegal for a lot of us this summer as many of the county’s residents plan to take staycations over sunny getaways.

A travel poll by Donegal Daily has revealed that almost 90% of readers will not be travelling abroad in 2020.

The poll found that over 2,600 DD readers have ruled out foreign holidays this year, whereas 403 (13% of respondents) said they are planning to travel.

There’s no place like home for a lot of readers, who say they plan to stay local and support local. Respondents commented that health is more important than holidays at present, while others have cancelled dream holidays in favour of staying at home and exploring Ireland instead.

Some of the people who are choosing to travel said that they are doing so to visit family. Others said they will go on pre-booked holidays as they are unable to get a refund.

“Unfortunately we booked our holiday in December for Portugal in September this year, paid in full, and I know our flights won’t be cancelled…so I am going as we are booked into a private villa,” said one reader.

Another commenter said: “Cancelled a dream holiday this year. We love our summer trips and our ‘us’ time. But no, not this year. The dream holiday will wait. We have booked a few hotel breaks in Ireland and look forward to summer here this year. It’s so important to protect those around us just now.”

Meanwhile, the Irish government is set to extend Covid-19 related restrictions on international travel until at least the 20th of July.  The requirement for people arriving in Ireland from abroad to quarantine for 14 days was due to be lifted on Thursday. The Cabinet is expected announce an extension of the time frame today amid growing anxiety over further spread of the virus.

The government has also delayed plans to publish a ‘green list’ of countries deemed safe for travel in Europe.

Veterinary Council welcomes newly qualified members from LYIT

Three newly registered veterinary nurses from Letterkenny Institute of Technology are among the new members welcomed to the Veterinary Council of Ireland in 2020.

The Veterinary Council of Ireland, the statutory body responsible for the regulation and management of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing in the state, has recorded 133 new vets and 48 new veterinary nurses on its register so far this year.

This influx of talent has been hailed as a positive sign as new members are set to benefit animal health and welfare across Ireland.

The total current number of vets and veterinary nurses on the Veterinary Council register is 2,938 and 1,019 respectively.

Of the newly registered veterinary nurses, 35 received their veterinary nursing qualification from UCD, 3 received their qualification from Letterkenny Institute of Technology, 3 from Athlone Institute of Technology, 2 from Saint John’s College Cork, with the remaining 5 receiving their qualifications overseas.

Niamh Muldoon, CEO and Registrar of the Veterinary Council of Ireland, said “The high number of newly registered vets this year is a positive sign for the profession and shows growth in the veterinary industry. It is the Council’s hope that the influx of new vets will help to meet the demands and recruitment challenges experienced by some under-serviced rural areas, particularly relevant to large animal practices. In order to address the issue of vet shortages, the Veterinary Council is analysing data and plans to conduct further research to inform possible solutions to this issue.”

Heartbroken widow pays tribute to husband and son following drowning tragedy

The bereaved wife and mother of a father and son who died in a drowning incident in Co Donegal has written of her heartache in a moving personal letter.

Jonathan Christian, aged 53 and his 17-year-old son both lost their lives in a tragic accident at Lough Keel outside Kilmacrennan on 18th June.

A family fishing trip ended in tragedy when the teenage boy fell into the lake and Jonathan jumped in to try and save him. Another fifteen-year-old son survived the tragedy.

The family members had been living in Douglas on the Isle of Man and were visiting a holiday home at Coolboy at the time.

In a poignant letter, Mrs Jonathan Christian describes the immense grief of losing two cherished loved ones and recalls their many wonderful qualities:

To Whom This May Concern,

The loss of my husband and son is inexplicable. The pain and grief that penetrates into every fibre of my being, so deeply and acutely that there is no consolation that can begin to reach the depths of my sorrow.

Jonathan was a very talented and accomplished man. In his humility he did not boast of his abilities, but quietly accomplished many great and wonderful things throughout his lifetime. We, as his wife and children, were always at the heart of his efforts and his sole focus was to better our lives. He was a property developer, builder, renovator and carpenter latterly. He was a business owner and manufacturer and enjoyed creating, making and building a variety of things. He was an entrepreneur and a visionary man with many hopes and dreams, all for his family, for our future. He achieved success as an artist, a sculptor. He was an aspiring writer with a creative mind and a beautiful soul. He loved his family completely, even to the laying down of his own life.

My son, oh my son, so beautiful, body, mind and spirit. He has a pure heart. He was a talented musician and he played the guitar, ukulele, violin, Native American flute and ocarina, and he could sing…the most beautiful voice; a singer and song writer. He was constantly improving and increasing his talents through his dedicated efforts. He loved his family beyond measure and would give his all in doing what he felt and knew to be right and true. I could never have asked for a more wonderful son. He is a pure blessing to me and of the greatest joy in my world. He always gave 10,000% in all that he did. When he would desire to learn something, he would put his whole heart into it. He was honest and a hard worker, selfless, thoughtful and kind.

In these few words, I can only begin to touch the surface of who they are. As with all those who go ahead, the hearts of those who remain who love them, are filled with so much more, so much beyond measure. They blessed our lives in mortality and they will continue to bless our lives in the eternities.

In some of what I have said, I have used past tense, however, my personal faith has given me a testimony of life beyond this mortal sphere. I believe God the Father and His son Jesus Christ and the angels are with them now. Their life and light carries on into the eternities, all of who they are, all of their knowledge and the talents and gifts they possess are still with them and part of who they are eternally. I believe our family will be together for time and all eternity.

During this time, while we are separated, their lives are to be honoured and cherished. We are to live our lives in such a way that we honour them by who we are, the good we do, the love we share by helping and lifting others and the faith we keep as we endure until we are with them again.

Mrs Jonathan Christian

6,000 pubs and restaurants inspected over the weekend

A number of Covid-19 regulation breaches are under examination after gardaí carried out spot-checks in 6,000 licensed premises over the weekend.

Last weekend was the first weekend of service after lockdown for restaurants and pubs that sell food.

Operation Navigation was launched by gardaí to ensure licensed premises and their customers are followed public health guidelines.

However, scenes from parts of Dublin showed a lack of social distancing as pubs served takeaway drinks to crowds outdoors.

Commissioner Drew Harris said that 6,000 premises have been inspected this weekend and gardaí are working through the information to see if any evidence will be substantiated for a file to be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee TD said that public health guidance for pubs and restaurants will be kept under review in light of incidents.  While the vast majority of businesses complied with regulations, the Minister said some scenes from the weekend were “disappointing”

“While we have been able to implement measures and bring them forward, what we don’t want is it have to reimplement any of these measures that we have relaxed,” Minister McEntee said.
