Donegal Person of the Year Noel Cunningham has been announced as the special guest who will fire the starting gun in the special 25th anniversary North West 10k next Monday.
The Kilcar native said he was honoured to be invited to perform the formalities for a charity fundraiser that has reached out to every part of Donegal since 1997.
“I was delighted when the Chairperson Neil Martin invited me to be the special guest for the 25th anniversary.
“This milestone is extra special for the committee and so I’m very honoured that I will be there giving the starting signal for the runners and walkers who are going to support three very good charities that have been chosen by the North West 10k committee.
“I want to wish Spina Bifida, No Barriers and the Donegal Diabetes Parents Support Group every success with the North West 10k fundraiser.
Charity sponsors of the North West 10k
“After the last couple of years when you couldn’t hold fundraisers it made life very difficult for charities. They were starved of funding so it is great to see that situation changing now that people can get out into the community and support charities again.
“So this is the first opportunity for the North West 10k to go live in three years and I would just encourage to get out on Bank Holiday Monday morning and support the three charities by running or walking the event. It will be a great way to finish off the Bank Holiday weekend and I’m really looking forward to be being part of the 25th North West 10k.”
North West 10k Chairperson Neil Martin said having the Donegal Person of the Year firing the starting gun for the runners and then the walkers is something that he is looking forward on Monday morning.
The North West 10k committee members.
Neil said: “Noel Cunningham has been and is a great ambassador for Donegal. He is a most deserving recipient of the Donegal Person of the Year Award.
“The Donegal Association in Dublin hosted a big night for him at the start of the month and it was a most fitting way for the county to show their appreciation for Noel.
He’s a great supporter of charities so I know being our special guest next Monday to officially start the North West 10k is something that he is really looking forward to being a part of on Monday.”
The North West 10k takes place next Monday at 11 a.m. in Letterkenny. It’s the 25th anniversary with the entries continuing online. Go to nortwest10k.com to register or click here.
The North West 10k office will also open for registrations next Saturday and Sunday from 3-6 p.m at the Letterkenny Community Centre.
Runners and walkers who have already registered online are encouraged to pick up their 10 T-shirts and numbers at the Community Centre during these times on Saturday and Sunday to avoid delays on Monday morning.
Registrations will be taken on Monday morning from 8am and closing at 10 am sharp. A reminder also that the race and walk starts at 11 am.
Naomh Conaill last week held a night in the Highlands Hotel for their Development Draw – and what a success it turned out to be.
Music on the night was provided by ‘Band of Gold’, of whom Cathal Corey is a member. Cathal is a two time winning championship manager with Naomh Conaill, in 2010 and 2015 and it was great having him back in the town last week.
Cathal spent years keeping the Naomh Conaill folk entertained in Davy Brennan Memorial Park but he managed to keep them on their toes through a different type of entertainment this time around.
Tickets for the draw were being sold right up to the last minute – a great weekend was had on Glenties Main Street and indeed club members visited premises in local villages on the night of the draw – one of the prizes, a set of O Neills Jerseys was won by a German lady, who actually purchased her ticket just hours before the draw in Glencolmcille.
Naomh Conaill chairman Martin Shankey-Smith informed those who turned up that a set of jerseys will be heading to Naomh Columbas, something the Naomh Conaill club are delighted with.
Martin said: “We had a number of big days in Glencolmcille selling tickets, the people there were so supportive of our draw, we got a great reception up there, sold plenty of tickets and had great fun along the way with them so we are delighted that the set of jerseys is going to Naomh Columba and to one of their ladies teams.”
Naomh Conaill captain Ciaran Thompson also spoke about the fantastic work that went on with volunteers giving up their time to go out selling tickets and also thanked all those who supported the draw, near and far: “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of people near and far.
Selling tickets door to door in the current climate has been a humbling experience and a constant reminder that GAA supporters will always do their best to support a developing club. Our plans were ambitious to begin with and we have already erected floodlights which have been a huge addition to the club.
“We plan on getting them finished this summer and thanks to peoples extended generosity we have managed to further our plans to include a ball wall, a new training field and resurface the road and car park.
“I would like to personally thank all of the volunteers that have worked tirelessly on the campaign. Thanks to their efforts a new generation of players can develop skills in more supported and suited environment.”
The big prize on the night managed to stay local, current club under-15 manager Hugh Campbell managing to scoop the 20k prize, through an online purchase he made before Christmas. The full list of winners on the night areas follows

Oideas Gael will host a special event over two days this weekend, 30 April–1 May, to celebrate the life of Tony Birtill (1954–2021).
Tony was a dear friend of Gleann Cholm Cille and a vital part of the team in Oideas Gael. Tony first came to Glen in the 1970s and later spent more than 30 years as a hill walking instructor with Oideas Gael.
At home, in his native Liverpool, Tony worked tirelessly to promote the Irish language and Irish culture.
Oideas Gael will celebrate Tony’s life by gathering together those who knew him for a weekend devoted to some of his greatest passions, including the Irish language, the environment, hill walking and Irish traditional music.
Tony Birtill along with Oideas Gael co-founders Seosamh Watson (pictured left) and Liam Ó Cuinneagáin (right) at Oideas Gael’s 25 year celebrations in 2009.
All proceeds from the weekend will be donated to two charities, Woodlands Hospice Liverpool and Donegal Mountain Rescue. The charities were chosen by Liam Birtill, Tony’s son.
Born in Liverpool, Tony was the son of Julia (née Daly), a nurse from Co. Meath, and Joe Birtill, a chemistry teacher.
In the 1980s he took up the study of the Irish language, having previously heard it spoken by his mother and among the Christian brothers at his school.
He later began teaching the language at the Liverpool Irish Centre and other venues in the city. In the 1990s he re-established a now thriving branch of Conradh na Gaelige in Liverpool.
Tony Birtill pictured with an Oideas Gael hill walking group, including current Tánaiste and then Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadkar.
A qualified mountaineer, Tony will be best known by locals and visitors to southwest Donegal as the driving force between Oideas Gael’s hugely popular bilingual hill walking courses where, after an initial programme in 1991, he led hill walking groups for 30 years.
According to Oideas Gael Director and co-founder Liam Ó Cuinneagáin: “As a guide and mountaineer, Tony had extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the landscape and environment of the Sliabh Liag peninsula and he shared his expertise freely.
“In England, he was a tireless activist for the Irish language and Irish emigrants. On a personal level, his passing is a huge loss to our community and we are happy to be able to celebrate his life and achievements this weekend.”
Tony Birtill was also a regular contributor to Irish-language publications Foinse, Beo.ie, Lá and Tuairisc.ie, as well the Irish Post and Liverpool Echo, and was often heard on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta or Nuacht TG4.

A second edition of his book A Hidden History – The Irish Language in Liverpool / An Ghaeilge i Learpholl, charting the history of the Irish language and the Irish emigrant community in Liverpool, was published in March 2021.
Those looking to participate in our celebration of Tony’s life, 30 April–1 May, should register at http://www.oideasgael.ie/en/tony/ or by calling Oideas Gael at (074) 97 30248 Those who cannot join us in person, may wish to make a donation to one of the charities chosen by Liam Birtill, Tony’s son: Woodlands Hospice and Donegal Mountain Rescue Team: https://online.oideasgael.ie/tony/

Over Easter, I took a guided tour to Tenerife with our partners at Travel Department. I have been seeing so many guided group holidays on offer recently that I was eager to get away and experience a new place with the company.
TheTenerife Coast & Country tour is a seven day holiday, with three days of excursions, flights, transfers and all meals included. The itinerary was a great mix of relaxation and exploration that I love on a holiday. The week allowed us to really settle into the island and discover its interesting geography, scenery and culture.
From the soaring volcano of Mount Teide, to the tropical parks, the warm sunshine or the chilled-out Canarian cafés, there was so much to enjoy.
On Tour at Teide National Park with the Travel Department Tenerife Coast & Country Trip
Here are five things I loved the most and think you will too!
The People
People are at their most content while on holiday, isn’t that true? So when you bring a group of like-minded travellers together, it’s a great way to meet new friends and share experiences.
There were 18 people in our group and since we all had an interest in travel, there was lots to talk about! Guided tours are a great option for solo travellers too because you have the safety and company of being in a group.
Our tour guide Nancy was excellent. I don’t know where we’d be without her! From the moment we got off the plane at Tenerife South, Nancy took care of our transfers, check-ins, and all the organising of the trip. If there was any issue or any question we had, we knew Nancy was there to help. She set up a WhatsApp group to share daily updates and recommendations on things to do, which was a great way to stay connected on our free days. Nancy was a ray of sunshine on our excursions, and kept our energies up with sweets every day! We also had two tour guides for our day trips – Luisa and Laura – who were full of so much knowledge about every town, every historic site – and almost every tree we saw!
El Drago, the oldest and largest living ‘Dragon Tree’, is one of the symbols of Tenerife. We got to see this on our full-day tour of Tenerife Island
The Lago Martiánez saltwater pool complex outside our hotel in Puerto de la Cruz
The Sights
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, which means there are vast differences across the island. There is the buzzing family and touristy side – the water parks, the pools, the beaches and zoos – and then there’s the stunning nature. The definite highlight for me was Teide National Park. High above the clouds, the vast park is home to the imposing Mount Teide, a dormant volcano that is the third highest in the world. Surrounding Teide is an other-wordly landscape of strange rock formations that would look the part on a sci-fi film set. I don’t know how many times I pointed out the bus window saying ‘cool!’ while Luisa was explaining how the bizarre rocks were shaped by lava flows and explosive eruptions.
One of our stops at Teide National Park, with the Mount Teide Volcano in the background
La Piedra de la Rosa- a rock formation in the shape of a flower, seen on our Mount Teide Half-Day Tour
We were also treated to some special glimpses into the culture of Tenerife. Our tours to the old towns of La Laguna and Icod de los Vinos let us see local mansions and learn about families of centuries gone by. Plus, being there for Easter, the local religious processions were very interesting to see.

Puerto de la Cruz, the town we stayed in, that had lots of colourful streets to explore
The Weather
Summer sunshine is just what we needed this month, and the mid-20s heat was really pleasant because of the island breeze. Rain is very rare on Tenerife, and while there was some hazy cloud on two days due to a ‘calima’ from the Sahara desert dust, it was still warm enough to sit at the outdoor cafes. My word of advice to others is to dress for warm weather, but bring a jacket too for evenings and tours to higher ground. You can always pick up a sunhat at the many souvenir shops too.
I would highly recommend lounging at The Lago Martiánez pools, very clean, lots of space and it’s by the coast so there is a great breeze

The Hospitality
I have toured with the Travel Department a few times over the years, always safe in the knowledge that we will be in a good hotel. When it’s a full-board package like on the Coast and Country tour, this is very important too. The Hotel Catalonia Las Vegas was great. It was a huge hotel with a pool, sunbathing area, live shows each night and it was in the best possible location in Puerto de la Cruz. The promenade was on our doorstep and all the shops and bars were just a few minutes away, so it felt safe being out at night.

Our room balcony at Hotel Catalonia Las Vegas
Our room overlooked the coast, so we could take in the wildness of the Atlantic waves at all times of the day. In the restaurant, we feasted on fresh fish, paella, salads, and all types of European food. Each day there was something different at the live kitchen with chefs on hand to make food fresh to order. All our group were very impressed by the selection and the freshness of the buffet. Local wine was also included in the full-board package.
In terms of Covid-19 guidelines, masks are worn indoors and on public transport. So you will always need one to hand.
Top Tip: Visit the ValleMar Hotel next door to Hotel Catalonia Las Vegas for a rooftop sunset drink
The Experience
I had never been to Tenerife before, but I think that this ‘Coast and Country’ tour was the best way to see and learn so much about the island. We did a lot, but we were never rushed. Since we were a small group with our own guides and bus, we did everything at our own pace. The itinerary was a nice mix of active days and days to lounge by the pool with a book.
Most of all, the joy of a guided tour is stress-free travel. Instead of worrying about bookings, buses and trips, the work is all done for you by the Travel Department experts. All that’s left for us to do is sit back and enjoy the journey!
The Bear Run 74 is coming to the hills of Donegal this May Bank Holiday weekend.
The two day event, on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May, will showcase some of the worlds most iconic supercars and American muscle cars around locations in Donegal for spectators to witness, in aid of the Foyle Down Syndrome Trust.
Keith Gamble from Lifford has been organising these events in memory of his late father but also to raise much needed funds for charity.
“This is the first we’ve set up a trip, we always do car shows and car and coffee mornings in Applegreen in Lifford for charity, but this time we’ve set up a two day trip around Donegal to take it to the roads.
“Lamborghinis, Ferraris, McLarens, Porsches and other top of the range cars will be on show at the event.”
The cars will be showcased in different areas in Donegal over the two days, starting from Applegreen Lifford at 9am on Saturday, stopping in Applegreen Carndonagh, Wild Ireland and ending in Downings.
The Sunday will start and end in Downings with stops at the Poisoned Glen and Mountain Top Letterkenny. View the poster below for all stops and times.
The name of the event comes from Keith, whose nickname is the Bear, and the 74 is for the age of his father Joe Gamble, when he passed away from cancer nine months ago.
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane district Graham Warke, who will be in attendance at the event, chose the charity for the event to be the Foyle Down Syndrome Trust. Keith also has a brother with special needs.

Fairyglen Holiday Village / Gleann na Sióg will be closing to guests for the summer in order to host Ukrainian refugees over the coming months.
Located in Derrybeg, Gweedore, the holiday village has announced it is working with the government in order to help the refugees fleeing from their native country during the ongoing war.
They have mentioned their sister property, Teach Bridget, as an alternative location to stay.

St Francis National School in Donegal Town is celebrating after one of its students was named the Agri Aware Farm Safe Schools regional champion for Ulster and two more took home the accolades for runners up.
Pascal, a 4th class pupil in St Francis National School, Donegal Town, was chosen after his name was put forward for the award.
His classmates, Mia and Thomas were announced as runners-up making St Francis true Ulster Champions.
St Francis National School is currently taking part in the Agri Aware Farm Safe Schools programme which aims to kickstart farm safety conversations in classrooms nationwide.
Over the course of the programme, Champions are selected from each region and awarded a certificate of achievement and a family pass to Dublin Zoo, kindly sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine.
Champions are those children who are demonstrating excellence, innovation and commitment to improving farm safety awareness as part of the programme.
The Regional Champions have gone above and beyond what is expected of them within the programme. They are passionate not just about farming but about making sure the message of farm safety is included and very much part of the conversation in their classrooms, at home and in their community.
Farm Safe Schools coordinator and AgriKids founder, Alma Jordan explained what made Pascal stand out from the crowd.
“We received a huge volume of entries for the Regional Awards and it proves the ability and capability of our children to change the culture around farm safety.
“Pascal was busy educating his classmates on how jobs need to be done safely on the farm and the importance of knowing the dangers when on the farm. He drew up a map of his own farm, identifying the dangers in different areas and made sure that all the correct signs are in place to keep it safe for his dad, brothers and any visitors.
“We even saw pictures of Pascal wearing his hi-vis vest and showing first-hand how important safety is to him. His willingness to share on the topic of farm safety is tremendous, this is exactly what Farm Safe Schools is all about.”
The Farm Safe Schools programme is a collaboration between Agri Aware, AgriKids, the IFA and is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine in Primary Schools across Ireland.
Agri Aware Chairman, Alan Jagoe expressed his delight to all the regional winners.
“The Agri Aware Farm Safe Schools programme sets out to create learning and understanding on the topic of farm safety to younger children.
“These regional award winners are a testament to the talent, tenacity and potential our children have in creating a safer future on Irish farms. I want to thank their teachers for bringing the programme into the classrooms and for recognising the champions in their class.
“I would like to thank the Department of Agriculture and Minister Martin Heydon, for their support of this dedicated farm safety programme.”
Deputy Padraig Mac Lochlainn is to raise the long term removal of Irish Government funding for the City of Derry Airport with the Minister for Transport Eamonn Ryan in the Dáil tonight.
The Irish Government funded the Derry to Dublin air connection for many years and then removed funding about a decade ago.
It is estimated that 40% of the passengers that use the airport are from Donegal.
The Sinn Fein Deputy said “The reinstatement of this airport connection would allow huge numbers of people in Donegal and the North West to fly directly to Dublin Airport and on to locations around the world and minimise the long journey by road, back and forth.
“It would also connect tourists from around the world to Donegal and the North West via Dublin and Derry airports.
“The Taoiseach recently committed to examine the possibility of funding for the airport under the Shared Island Initiative and I am pushing Eamon Ryan on this.”
Deputy Mac Lochlainn will also be raise this directly with the Taoiseach in the Dáil tomorrow afternoon.
Around 100 young people took part in the Urban Adventure Sports taster session at the Bernard McGlinchey Town Park in Letterkenny on Friday afternoon.
The free event, which was organised by Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP), provided an opportunity for boys and girls to experience skateboarding, scooting, and graffiti art.
Kirsty Browne, project coordinator with Donegal Sports Partnership. commented: “The session went extremely well and the good weather was a big help, too.
“A total of 93 registered over the course of the four hours for the three workshops, so we were more or less at maximum capacity. We had participants from all over the county which was pleasing.
“We were also delighted with the diversity of the participants including our new friends from Ukraine. Skateboarding was the most popular of the three workshops and it would be great to organise a separate skateboarding session towards the end of the summer,” the coordinator added.
Friday’s event was part of a bigger Urban Adventure Sports programme being coordinated by DSP which is supported by Sport Ireland’s Dormant Account Funding and Dormant Accounts and Donegal County Council.
The aim of the programme is to provide more opportunities for adventure-type sports in urban settings. Letterkenny Town Park, which will see additional facilities developed later in the year, will host activities skating, BMX biking, scooting and orienteering in the future.

Brave Buncrana woman Jennifer Doherty is about to take on one of the most exciting challenges of her life this week as she begins a trek to Mount Everest.
Jennifer, who is blind from birth, is a disability advocate who proves there’s no stopping someone with a goal.
Her dream was to go to Mt Everest base camp, and so on the 27th of April, she will be flying out to Kathmandu to join a trek with a group of intrepid local explorers, led by Letterkenny’s Jason Black.
Jennifer, as always, will be flying the flag for Donegal Centre for Independent Living and inspiring others to get out there and live their lives to the full.
Her adventure has been made possible through the DCIL Opportunity Fund.
The Donegal Centre for Independent Living is the leading provider of Personal Assistant services in Donegal and the organisation is enshrined by the philosophy of independent living. ‘Independent Living’ means that people with a disability want the same life opportunities and choices as everyone else.
With these values in mind, DCIL created the Opportunity Fund and set aside a sum of money with which to finance the fund for three years. DCIL invites donations to ensure this fund can continue for years to come and enable others to realise their dreams and potential.
CEO Rosaleen Doherty said that the availability of this fund is to enable people with disabilities achieve greater independence and empowerment through participation in activities that enhance their confidence to live independently and that require additional monetary assistance.
Jennifer Doherty is of the three awardees for the current distribution of the Opportunity Fund. Jennifer has been receiving a Personal Assistant service from DCIL for fifteen years and has proved herself to be a young woman with a thirst for both adventure and independence.
The public can follow and support this challenge on the Donegal Centre for Independent Living Facebook page, the entire team here wish her every success and fulfilment in her journey!
