ELECTION 2014: BOYLE WELCOMES LOBBYING OF MINISTER OVER BEEF CRISIS

$

grace 067Fine Gael local election Candidate Grace Boyle has welcomed the news that Deputy Joe McHugh, TD, has raised the issue of the ongoing challenges in the beef sector with Minister Simon Coveney.

These challenges are seriously affecting farmers in the Milford-Letterkenny electoral area and Donegal in general, she said

While Deputy McHugh welcomed and acknowledged the very good work that Minister Coveney did during the CAP negotiations, in securing €12.5 billion up to 2020, he explained that things have since moved on and there are real and genuine concerns in the farming sector that need to be addressed.

In their meeting, Deputy McHugh outlined the massive decline in the suckler herd. They also discussed the bull beef crisis and the market place in it’s current form. While the Minister cannot involve himself directly in the market, there is a perception amongst farmers that processors are influencing prices too heavily. Adding to this issue is the absence of the Northern buyer at our marts and not being able to take animals across the border to finish, both impacting negatively on the market.

Deputy McHugh said that, “while it’s important to acknowledge that the price of beef is up 30% on three years ago, it is still down substantially on last year’s prices and with increases in costs, this is adding further pressure on the farmers”.

The Minister called a meeting today with the various farming organisations, including the processors, in an effort to engage with all parties relevant to this issue and discuss a way forward. According to Grace Boyle, “Engagement of this type is absolutely necessary so that the interested parties can voice their concerns to the Minister and engage positively with him to try to find a solution. I welcome this news and will follow up the matter with Deputy McHugh again soon”.

Independent local election candidate, John O’Donnell is calling on Donegal County Council to seek immediate funding to upgrade Bunlin Bridge in Milford.

Independent candidate John O'Donnell has urged the council to seek funding to upgrade Bunlin Bridge in Milford.

Independent candidate John O’Donnell has urged the council to seek funding to upgrade Bunlin Bridge in Milford.

Having inspected the site earlier this week, O’Donnell told Donegal Daily, “Sections of the bridge are crumbling and both parapets have been significantly damaged by vehicle impacts, with a section of one parapet missing completely.

O’Donnell added, “In its current state, the bridge is a safety hazard. While the road on either side was widened, the bridge itself remains too narrow for two cars to meet head on.

“This is unacceptable for a bridge that carries traffic volumes in the region of approximately 2,500 vehicles per day.

O’Donnell concluded, “I want to see a new bridge built, but in the interim, I’m requesting additional safety measures be implemented as there is still evidence that the parapets are being hit by vehicles.

ELECTION 2014 – McCLAFFERTY VOWS TO FIGHT ‘EXPORT’ OF YOUNG PEOPLE

$

Donegal’s newest local election candidate, Charlie McClafferty from Churchill has said that Donegal is indeed different, “Up here we export our young People.”ballot box

His comments have added impact this week amid fears of job losses at the 40,000 acre Glenveagh National Park due to a review that could see services outsourced to the private sector.

A former stalwart of Fine Gael, Charlie McClafferty has become the 21st candidate to run in the Letterkenny electoral area and he’s assembled an impressive group of campaigners to support him.

Senator Ronan Mullan will be among the guests a big get together evening for the campaign at McClafferty’s Lounge on Friday May 9th at 9.00pm.

His decision to run as an Independent candidate will not come as a shock to Fine Gael since they’ve already been accused of shafting him at their selection convention earlier this year.

It was almost inevitable that Charlie McClafferty would enter the race because of his political background with his late grandfather being regarded as the rock on which the modern day FG party was founded in Glendowan and Glenswilly to replace Cumann na nGaedhal.

Charlie, a 40 year old father of two young children speaks with a powerful passion and vision about what is needed here in the very heart of Donegal.

McClafferty says his decision to run was made some months ago and he’s got no apologies to make for trying to promote his native parish of Termon and Glendowan.

As a young family man with two children he says that far too many young people have emigrated and there are not enough opportunities being created for those left behind to enable them to plan with any certainty that they can remain at home in Churchill and the Glen.

He said that FF destroyed people’s hopes and dreams and now FG is taxing everyone out of existence and the revelations about water charges will leave people with bills they have no way of paying in the present economic climate.

His campaign will lean heavily on local issues and what he might be able to do as a businessman, a ratepayer and a taxpayer.

He said that from the county’s 8,014 farmers too many are paid too little under the new CAP and that along with the potential for jobs in farming and tourism need much more focus and funding if rural Ireland is to have a future.

He has now set out his agenda to tackle Donegal’s emigration cycle and this is having an incalculable impact on our mental health, family welfare, crime and society. And he adds there is a knock on effect for struggling small business and jobs across Letterkenny, small towns and rural Donegal.

LYIT Gaisce Society Wins National Award

The Annual Board of Irish Society (BICS) awards took place in the Titanic Quarter, Belfast recently and it was a national awards ceremony which recognises student volunteering and engagement activity in the third level sector throughout Ireland.

Letterkenny Institute of Technology was represented by two societies on the night, the LGBT Society and the Gaisce Society.

The LGBT Society competed in the category of ‘Most Improved Society’ in a small college and the Gaisce Society competed in the ‘Best Society in a Civic and Charity Field’.

Both societies faced strong competition in their respective categories, from colleges such as Galway Mayo Institute, Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tallaght.

Unfortunately, the LGBT Society were narrowly beaten by Cork Institute of Technology’s Music Society, in their category but the LGBT Society President, Ian Smyth commended CIT on their win, and outlined the LGBT Society’s plans to continue their work with the Donegal Youth Service and to come back to the BICS Awards 2015 with a renewed energy.

The LYIT Gaisce Society was awarded the title of ‘Best Society in a Civic and Charity Field’ for their work in Thailand, volunteering in the ‘Garden of Eden Project’.

The ‘Garden of Eden Project’, Thailand is a community consisting of HIV/Aids sufferers, who have been marginalised by their home communities and live together in an area outside Bangkok and rely on volunteer support from groups, such as the LYIT Gaisce Society.

Gaisce Society members have assisted this community by carrying out improvement projects to the orphanage, by building a shed to shelter the cattle at night and building a fish farm to assist in giving this community financial independence .

The judges assessing the Gaisce Society’s application and portfolio, were astounded by the efforts by this group, and paid particular reference to the alumni who had also contributed over the years to this volunteer effort.

The Gaisce Society was represented on the night by;

• Catriona Kelly, Treasurer

• Conor Boyd, President

• Isobel Keenan, Secretary

• Riadh Egan, LYIT Most Outstanding Club Member 2014

This national award recognises the work of alumni and current students over the past 7 years and it highlights the truly fantastic efforts in the area of volunteering, currently taking place in the third level sector.

Great day for the Outdoors today across Donegal. Picture by Annemarie McGowan

DONEGAL is set to bask in glorious sunny weather over the Easter weekend, forecasters have said.

It’s going to start off with a great day today with temperatures soaring this afternoon.

RTE had been predicting rain for Donegal all week.

But last night the Met Eireann forecasters completely revised the forecast, giving wall-to-wall sunshine for Good Friday after a frosty start.

There will be more sunshine on Saturday AND Sunday.

And while temperatures might hit 15C today, it will be a couple of degrees cooler by Easter Sunday afternoon.

The dry weather is good news for businesses too across Donegal, particularly for retailers and those in the tourism industry.

Hotels are reporting bookings up on last year.

There may be a slight blip around Tuesday with the possibility of some light rain, before thing settle down and temperatures rise again later in the week.

JOY AS 56 VACANT HOMES TO BE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE IN HOUSING REGENERATION SCHEME

A total of 56 local authority homes which have been left vacant across Donegal are to be brought back to life.

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh

A total of €358,000 has been granted to give the houses a facelift and to allow them to be allocated to families across the county.

The allocation is part of a €15million investment announced by Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan.

A total of 952 homes across the country are to be renovated as a result of the programme.

Local Letterkenny councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said the scheme will provide a boost to many housing estates and also put a roof over the heads of 56 Donegal families.

“This scheme will go some way to easing the pressure on social housing in the country.

“In addition unused units can very quickly become magnets for anti social behaviour and boarded up houses, are unsightly and can bring down the look of an entire housing development.

“This investment will therefore not only provide additional social housing, but will also enhance the appearance of neighbourhoods and enhance the quality of life of the residents of housing estates,” he said.

Shay shows his support for Relay for Life

The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper said being a member of any team can be a memorable and rewarding experience.

But he added “Being a Relay for Life Donegal team member takes memorable and rewarding to a whole new/different level”.

The Lifford man said people he knows who have participated at the events over the past two years who have told him about their fulfillment at taking part.

Shay said “Surely to experience this first hand must be truly incredible?”

Astonishingly, according to the successful goalkeeper, “20 people each week are diagnosed with cancer; that’s why the Relay for Life Donegal committee believes there are 1000 reasons to Relay”.

Shay asks everyone reading this article to consider their reasons to Relay.

“If you feel you have at least one reason to Relay, then contact Nicola Mc Bride or any committee member in order to get registered today. With so many people being diagnosed with cancer in Donegal, it is essential to have funding in place that will ensure delivery of key services when required”.

Last year Relay for Life Donegal raised a staggering €320,728 for research.

In addition, €328,225 was spent by The Irish Cancer Society on cancer services in Donegal.

Without assistance The Irish Cancer Society would find it impossible to provide vital services; such as care to drive, nursing services, financial aid, helpline calls, counselling, survivors supporting survivors, youth programmes, cancer support centres, booklets and leaflets, etc.

Shay highlights that “all proceeds raised from Relay for Life Donegal 2014, will be spent on providing vital cancer services in Donegal” and urges the public to “please call Nicola on 086 8880399 or email nicolamcbride@ymail.com, email relayforlifedonegalapplications@yahoo.com, or contact any committee member”.

HARPS MAKE THE SHORT AWAY TRIP TO LONGFORD

Finn Harps bring the curtain down on the first quarter of the 2014 campaign when they make their shortest away trip of the First Division season on Saturday as the face First Division title favourites Longford Town at the City Calling Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).finn harps logo

Longford come into the game on the back of a shock defeat against Shamrock Rovers ‘B’ last weekend, but Harps boss Ollie Horgan still knows they will prove a formidable opponent on Saturday.

“Longford have the best panel of players in our Division,” said Horgan of his fortcoming opponents. “The fact that they lost last day out makes no difference other than we might suffer a backlash from them.

“They have serious players all over the field and on the bench too,” he said. “Stephen Rice, Pat Sullivan and Pat Flynn all won the league with Shamrock Rovers just a couple years ago. David O’Sullivan, Gary Shaw and Don Cowen amongst others give them power and pace up front. They also have Kevin O’Connor and Sean Russell who they have signed from Premier Division teams.”

Last Friday, Harps had to fight back for a 1-1 in a game that turned on the sending off of defender Keith Cowan in the first half.

“We played well during the first half on Friday night until sending off,” said Horgan. “But, the whole game changed after that. I felt we were in control of game up to that point and had a decent goal disallowed but in the end were fortunate to get a result at all.

“Keith raised a ‘finger’ to Danny Furlong who fell rather dramatically to the ground, so according to the letter of the law he was sent off. However, neither player came out of incident with much credit.”

Harps have conceded four goals in their six First Division games this season, with only one of them coming from open play. Horgan has preached all season about defending from set-pieces and is probably a bit disappointed that the majority of goals conceded have come from set plays.

“We conceded against Galway from a throw in that should have been cleared, a direct free kick and penalty in Shelbourne but Wexford’s goal should have been dealt with. Killian Cantwell got a free header near the back post initially and ball travelled good distance to other side of goal and overall it was poor defending on our part.

Harps have had some success against Saturday opponents in Longford in recent times. Prior to last season’s 3-1 defeat, Harps had won on each of their previous three visits to the midlands.

Josh Mailey and Keith Cowan are both suspended for Saturday’s game, meaning that Caoimhin Bonner is in line for his first start of the season. Kevin McHugh, who has only played in the opening game of the season, remains out with a hamstring complaint.

“I am delighted to be able to help them out in any way possible.

“This is a night for outstanding young people in Donegal to celebrate their achievements with family and friends.

Winners will receive a personalised award.

These awards will be sponsored by local businesses.

Closing date for nominations is the 28th of April.

After the local awards, the Donegal winners may go on to be recognised nationally and possibly internationally for their achievements.

Every year, Junior Chamber International selects 10 outstanding young people under 40 to be recognised for living the JCI Mission in extraordinary ways.

JCI feel, that highlighting the accomplishments of these young active citizens in a variety of fields will inspire others to be better and realise their full potential as active citizens.

There are several categories under which young people can be nominated.

Each nominee must be entered in one, and only one, of the ten categories below.

• Business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment

• Political, legal, and/or governmental affairs
