Naomh Colmcille GAA Notes

The senior and reserve teams had contrasting results in their matches at Urris on Sunday.NAOMH COLMCILLE GAA

The senior team’s winning start to the season continued but the reserves lost out.

The scheduled home matches against Burt did not go ahead.

The seniors travelled to Urris on Sunday looking for their second win of the league season. The lads emerged victorious with 5 points to spare, winning on a scoreline of Urris 1-7 Naomh Colmcille 0-15.

The reserves took on Urris on Sunday lunchtime following on from their home win over Red Hughs.

Unfortunately the lads lost out on a full time score of Urris 4-9 2-8 Naomh Colmcille.

The minors took on Letterkenny Gaels at O’Donnell Park on Wednesday in a play-off to determine the table-toppers for the Northern Board U18 Central League section.

The Gaels had salvaged a draw with two scores in injury time in the league match in Newton in the final league match 9 days earlier.

This time there was to be no comeback for the Gaels though and the lads won on a scoreline of Naomh Colmcille 4-10 2-12 Letterkenny Gaels.

The lads now take on Gaoth Dobhair at Convoy CFE on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the semi-final.

The U14′s overcame a slow start to defeat Letterkenny Gaels at Pairc Colmcille on Monday evening.

The visitors established a 5 point lead in the opening 14 minutes before Naomh Colmcille finally got their first score a few minutes later.

That turned out to be the start of better things to come for the home side, as they added on another 1-3 in the opening half, with a single point in reply from Letterkenny Gaels.

This left the score at the interval Naomh Colmcille 1-4 0-6 Letterkenny Gaels.

An early point for the home side was soon cancelled out by a similar score for the Gaels at the start of the second half.

However Naomh Colmcille went on to score 1-7 between the 6th and 21st minutes, before the Gaels found the net for their next score, with the score 2-12 to 1-7 in the home side’s favour.

Three further points for Naomh Colmcille and an injury time point for the visitors completed the scoring.

Final score Naomh Colmcille 2-15 1-8 Letterkenny Gaels.

THE DRAMATIC MOMENT STUDENT WAS LIFTED FROM ERRIGAL AFTER 50 METRE FALL

The rescue helicopter takes the injured man fro Errigal. Pic by Patrick McClafferty for Donegal Daily.

This is the dramatic moment a rescue helicopter lifted a young trainee teacher off Errigal after he tumbled 50 metres down the side of the mountain.

The student from St Patrick’s Teacher Training College in Dublin fell and tumbled down a steep shale slope last evening.

The 19 year old from Co Monaghan was with another trainee teacher on a week-long break to improve their language skills at a local Irish College.

The young men began climbing the 2,464 ft mountain at 5pm but disaster struck at 7pm when one of the men took a serious fall.

Patrick McClafferty caught this stunning picture of the rescue.

The injured man tumbled and as well as receiving severe cuts and bruises to his legs and body, he also suffered a dislocated shoulder.

The teenager’s companion called the emergency services who responded immediately.

The emergency rescue helicopter was dispatched from its base in Sligo.

However upon arrival the casualty could not be airlifted from the dangerous area where the young man had fallen.

Members of the Donegal Mountain Rescue team were then called into action and had to move the man to a safer area where he could be extracted from the mountain.

Joseph Brennan of the Donegal Mountain Rescue said it was a very tricky rescue.

“Because of the area where the young man had fallen is covered in scree, he could not be winched out of there.

“There was a fear that the blades of the helicopter may have struck the rocks and we just couldn’t take that chance.

“It was just one of those very awkward operations. While it was a lovely evening, it was blowing a gale at the summit of the mountain.

“We eventually got to him and brought him to another location where he was then airlifted to safety,” he revealed.

The man is currently recovering at Sligo General Hospital where he was transferred from Letterkenny General Hospital while his companion was checked but did not receive any injuries.

Mr Brennan said the lads did nothing wrong but the incident showed how quickly a situation can change in the “blink of an eye.”

“The lads left to climb the mountain at 5pm which isn’t too late and it was a lovely evening.

“But unfortunately one of them took a tumble and it just shows how everything can change in the blink of an eye.

“He tumbled up to 50 metres but thankfully he managed to protect his head before he came to a stop.

“His friend then managed to scramble to him and comforted him until the emergency services arrived.

“What should have been a nice climb up and down in a few hours ended up with one of them being taken from the mountain at 11pm and then being hospitalised.

“However the good news is that the lads will recover and all the rescue services came together for what was a prolonged but successful rescue,” he said.

He also advised people to prepare when climbing a mountain by wearing the proper clothing, footwear and to bring a bar of chocolate and always a mobile phone.

DONEGAL GARDA TRAFFIC BOSS ‘HAPPIER’ AFTER EASTER CRACK DOWN ON DRINK DRIVERS

Inspector Harrison

THE HEAD of the Garda Traffic Corps in County Donegal says he is ‘happier’ with safer driving on our roads, but warned: “Our operations are continuing.”

Inspector Michael Harrison was speaking as he revealed that all 368 people breath-tested at mandatory checkpoints in Donegal over the weekend passed the tests.

However four other motorists were separately caught drinking and driving by other Gardaí on patrol in the county.

The number of people caught drinking and driving in the three months until the end of March in Donegal was up 6.4% on the same three months of 2013.

Inspector Harrison said he was ‘happier’ with the safer driving over the Easter weekend with no fatal or serious injury road collisions.

Gardaí attended the scene of just three traffic accidents. No-one was seriously hurt in any of them.

A number of people were caught driving whilst using mobile phones.

“We didn’t have any loss of life or serious injury over the bank holiday weekend and I am always happy when this is the case, especially with the good weather and the increased traffic volumes,” Insp Harrison said today.

“We are hoping that the message on drinking and driving is getting through, with everyone stopped during the special operation in Donegal Town giving clear results from breath tests.

“I am mindful that the number of people detected drinking and driving is up on last year and four motorists were arrested since last Friday for suspected drink-driving.

“Our operations involving both traffic corps gardaí and regular gardaí are continuing across Donegal this week.

“I want to thank all those who have been driving safely and urge them to continue to do so during the rest of Easter and on into the future. I’m happier with what we have seen this weekend but we will continue our work to make Donegal’s roads safer for everyone who uses them.”

The otter was spotted in the middle of Bundoran trying to get into a children’s Play-centre!

They are notoriously shy creatures who are rarely spotted in the wild – nevermind off a town’s busy Main Street.

But Ollie the Otter didn’t mind the fuss today as he made an appearance in Bundoran.

Ollie was spotted trying to get into Dizzy’s Den children’s playcentre just after 10am.

Anna Marie Murray, the owner of the centre which is located at Bundoran Retail Park, said she was shocked to see the creature outside her premises.

“He was outside and it looked like he was trying to get in. It was one of the strangest things I have ever seen.

“Unfortunately we have a strict no animals policy,” she laughed.

Anna Marie said Ollie just wandered off after a while and she hopes he made his way into fields behind their centre and back to a nearby river.

Aodh Ruadh GAA Notes

Monthly club meeting

The monthly club meeting will take place on Thursday, 24th April in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh at 9pm.  Aodh Ruadh

All members of the club executive are asked to attend.

Football

Aodh Ruadh maintained their 100 percent home record with this win on a sun-soaked Good Friday evening, but not before Milford gave them a thorough test of their mettle.

The final score on Jimmy White’s long whistle read Aodh Ruadh 3-13 Milford 0-10. Ballyshannon were value for that win on their second half performance, but they rode their luck at times.

Once again Aodh Ruadh’s cutting edge shone with David McGurrin and Jamie McDonald working well off each other and running up 2-8 between them.

The last line of Peter Boyle, Michael Ward, Ciron Whoriskey and Damien Cleary deserve credit for keeping the Ernesiders in the game when Milford were in the ascendancy for long stretches.

There is a full match report and gallery from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh took control of the reserve clash with Milford early on and the half time scores stood at 2-9 to 0-7 in favour of the homesters, David Finnerty and Anthony Coughlan raising the green flags.

By the end of the third quarter Aodh Ruadh had pushed it out to 4-13 to 0-7 with Milford simply unable to get their hand to leather.

Dermot Slevin slotting a penalty rapidly followed by James O’Donnell with the fourth goal.

Milford got a bit more joy in the closing stages, but further goals from Michael ‘Sticky’ Ward and Val Murray meant there was never any prospect of a comeback.

It was one of those games again where Aodh Ruadh looked like a well oiled machine.

In defence Ronan Matthews, Ryan Patton and Calum ‘Cookie’ O’Halloran were well on top.

Around the middle David Finnerty, Michael McNeely, Chris McCabe and James O’Donnell got through a mountain of ball while up front Anthony Coughlan, Sticky Ward, Dermot Slevin and Sylvester Maguire were among the scores.

We have a full and authoritative match report plus pictures up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh were due to host Naomh Colmcille this Saturday, but that fixture will not be going ahead due to Donegal’s participation the NFL division two final and Newtowncunningham’s Thomas McKinley being part of the panel.

Best of luck to Niall Harley and Colm Kelly this Saturday when the Donegal minors take on Tyrone in the final of the Ulster minor football league in Brewster Park this Saturday. Throw in is at 12 noon.

The under 16s enjoyed a robust challenge against Glencar Manorhamilton on Monday evening in the park.

Quite a bit of good attacking football on show from two committed sides, Aodh Ruadh’s sharper forwards just seeing them take the spoils.

We should have some pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org later in the week.

Under age football at its best was the way one Glen supporter summed up the meeting of the Aodh Ruadh and Naomh Columba under 14s on Saturday.

Aodh Ruadh was first off the mark with a goal in the first minute from Evan McTernan in what was a very tight first half between two very evenly matched sides.

With some great football on display it was neck and neck with the half time score reading Aodh Ruadh 2-2 Naomh Columba 1-6.

Glen started strongest in the second half with a goal coming straight from the throw in. This took the wind out of the sails of the Ernesiders and the heads went down very quick, a problem that this team needs to overcome.

The home side knocked over score after score and left Aodh Ruadh trailing by 12 points at one stage but thanks to man of the match Pauric Keenaghan who turned the game around, the Ballyshannon men found their feet again.

This mighty team not only closed the gap, but took a five point lead with just two minutes left on the clock.

The last kick of the game was a converted Glen penalty, which gave the Aodh Ruadh lads a two point victory.

Once again they proved to themselves that there is nothing beyond them when they put their minds to it.

Best performances on the day came from Pauric Keenaghan, Adam Rami and Owen Doherty with Jack McCaffrey, Joe Danagher, Ciaran Hodgins and Ryan McDonald all doing very well when introduced. The next game for the lads is away to Ardara on Wednesday evening with a 7pm throw in.

Under 12 training takes place on Saturday morning from 10.45am to 12 noon and Wednesday evening from 6.15pm to 7.30pm.

May we also remind parents that children should be collected promptly after training.

Many thanks to the parents who helped out with our under skills test last Saturday, our second of the season.

We were pleased to see that many lads have markedly improved their score from the first test and have clearly been working on their skills.

Each participant will get their results slip at Wednesday night training, when we will also be presenting medals. We also hope to have a game for this Saturday, further details at Wednesday training.

Under 8 and under 6 training continues in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Ladies

There was a great turnout for our Annual Duck Race last Saturday with many commenting on the long number of years this novel event is on the go.

The ducks competed well and will be well looked after for the next year by their reliable gamekeeper.

Many thanks to everyone for supporting this event. Congrats to Shane McLoone, Áine Hill and Patsy McGuckian who won a few euro for themselves.

We’ll have shots from the day’s craic up later in the week.

Our under 14s commenced their campaign with a journey to Four Masters of Donegal town last Tuesday 15th April.

Both teams started off well and were neck in neck throughout the first half. There were many battles fought on the pitch proving Donegal town to be tough opponents.

In the second half the Aodh Ruadh side kicked it up a gear. With some sharp shooting up front, ruthless defending and hard work around the middle of the field, the Ernesiders eventually pulled away as winners with a score of 5-4 to 3-5 in what was all-round an excellent team performance.

Their next game sees them take on our neighbours in Bundoran in what is sure to be an exciting affair.

The game is set for Tuesday 22nd April at 6.30pm in Bundoran. All support is welcome and would be greatly appreciated.

Best of luck to our senior ladies who have their first league match at home against Gaoth Dobhair this Thursday 22nd at 7pm.

There will be training on Tuesday at 7pm as normal for the ladies.

Hurling

Good luck to our representatives on the Donegal panel as they take on Roscommon, again, this Saturday.

They will be contesting the preliminary round in the Nicky Rackard cup in Athleague at 2.30pm

Aodh Ruadh came up short against Saint Eunan’s in their Ulster league division three clash in O’Donnell park on Monday evening.

Once again goals proved their undoing as the Letterkenny men ran out 4-16 to 1-15 winners.

Ballyshannon battled well to make it a two point game at half time, but a sharp start to the second half by the homesters, who shot a goal and series of points, made it an uphill struggle from there in.

Nevertheless the Ernesiders did pull the deficit back to four points before Saint Eunan’s finished the game out strongly.

Paul Sheridan worked hard about the middle while Ciaran Rami and Cian Dolan both delivered creditable displays in the half back line.

Up front Mickey Bowering got the Ballyshannon goal and was a good outlet, while Chris Kilgannon was faultless from placed ball.

Aodh Ruadh are back in Garvaghey this weekend when they take Armagh side Derrynoose.

The under 14s made the trip to Ballybofey on Thursday last to play MacCumhaill’s in the league, the lads were up against it from the start against a physically stronger home team.

Too much work is being left to too few on this team which resulted in MacCumhaill’s winning convincingly 4-11 to 1-5.

Many thanks to the parents who drove the lads to the game your support is much appreciated.

The under 14s have another difficult game this Thursday as they play the reigning champions, Buncrana, in Convoy.

Hopefully all the team will give their all in this game.

The minors continued their unbeaten run in the league as they overcame Carndonagh in Father Tierney Park also on Thursday.

They were slow getting into the game against a very determined Carn team but gradually they got on top of the Inishowen men and ran out easy winners 3-18 to 1-4.

Their hard work at training is paying off as they are joint leaders of the league with Buncrana, both teams currently unbeaten.

They face a trip to Letterkenny this Thursday to play Saint Eunan’s another side who are going well in the league. We should have a some shots from the game up on aodhruadh.org later in the week.

Next Sunday the first of the all county blitzes takes place in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy with the action starting at 11am, our under 8s and under 10s will be taking part in this blitz.

It promises to be a great day of hurling. Both these panels have been working very hard since the beginning of March and we look forward to seeing them in action on Sunday, many of them representing their club for the first time.

Brendan Rodgers, the man responsible for Liverpool’s sensational footballing renaissance this season, has revealed Donegal man Packie Bonner was one of his childhood heroes.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he grew up admiring Packie Bonner.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he grew up admiring Packie Bonner.

Rodgers from Carnlough, Antrim has worked miracles with his Liverpool squad this season.

Their rise up the table coupled with Manchester United’s demise has Liverpool fans in dreamland.

Liverpool haven’t won the English Championship in 24 years, but Liverpool are five points clear with just three games to go and are now within touching distance of ending that drought.

In a candid interview with the Daily Express, Rodgers revealed his passion for football as a youngster and how he loved watching Celtic play.

Rodgers said, “I grew up watching Celtic play, I loved Danny McGrain, Paul McStay, Roy Aitken and of course Packie Bonner being the Irishman in the team.

“He was a fantastic goalkeeper and who’ll ever forget that penalty save for Ireland in the 1990 World Cup.

“I worked with him when he was at Reading and he was a great character and someone who had a great passion for football.

Packie Bonner worked with Rodgers at Reading, and says the influence of working under Tommy Burns is reflected in the style of play adopted by Liverpool.

Packie Bonner worked with Rodgers at Reading, and says the influence of working under Tommy Burns is reflected in the style of play adopted by Liverpool.

Rodgers was at Reading, when he was forced to retire from the game at the age of 20 and took up a coaching position with the club’s academy.

The Reading manager at the time was Tommy Burns and his assistant was Packie Bonner.

The pair got to know each other quite well during that time and Bonner believes Tommy Burns’ football philosophy rubbed off on Rodgers.

Bonner said, “I see  a lot of Tommy Burns’ in the way Brendan Rodgers has got Liverpool playing and previous to that at Swansea.

“There’s no doubt Tommy influenced him, as he did all the coaches who were starting off at that time in our academy.

“Tommy was an excellent coach and Brendan would have been watching him closely.

“When you look at the way Brendan wants to play the game it mirrors Tommy’s philosophy.

The blaze in Glenties today

SOME of the worst gorse fires seen in Donegal in years raged into the early hours of this morning as fire crews battled the inferno.

It proved to be a very busy night for fire crews from both Glenties and Donegal Town

At approximately 9.30 two units from Glenties and Donegal Town responded to a large hill and gorse fire in the Frosses / Mountcharles area which wasn’t got under control to around 1 am.

Half an hour later – at 1.30am – Glenties crews were called out once again, this time to a large forest fire on the main Glenties to Killybegs Road where they remained til 6 am this morning Saturday.

While at the scene of this fire the Glenties Fire Crew were called to a road traffic accident also to which the Dungloe Brigade had to respond to and casualties were transferred to Hospital in Letterkenny.

Dungloe, Gweedore and Falcarragh have had a busy Friday also with Gorse Fires

“It has been an extremely busy 12 hours,” said a Fire Service spokesman.

“We have dealt with fires right across the west of the county overnight.”

The machine which was stolen

COMMUNITY ALERT: A DONEGAL business owner today issued an urgent appeal for help after her premises were raided.

Jennifer McLaughlin, who runs the Beauty House salon in Bridgend, says €6,000 worth of equipment was taken in the raid.

She wants to warn people that the thieves may try to sell this equipment online.

And she wants to warn other business owners that a criminal gang is once again operating in the area.

“I have had my micro pigmentation machine and equipment required to do these treatments stolen,” said Jennifer.

“I have worked very hard to buy this machine and it is essential to my business. This machine is usless to most but to me it is my career.

“I can not carry out treatments without it. Can everyone please share this Donegal Daily story and keep an eye out on any buy and sell sites.

“Or if anyone has approached you trying to sell it please let me know. I am completely devastated and disgusted that someone can just take the tools I require to do my job and make a living. Please please share and keep an eye out. There are very few machines of this brand around.”

SADNESS AS DONEGAL GAA GREAT JOHN HANNIGAN IS LAID TO REST

The late John Hannigan

The late John Hannigan

THERE was enormous sadness today as Donegal gaelic football legend John Hannigan was laid to rest.

John, who played 114 consecutive games for Donegal through 17 championships in the 60s and 70s, was a much-loved member of his community in Letterkenny.

Fr Neil Carlin told mourners at a packed St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny this morning that John was one of life’s true gentlemen, humble, faithful and honest; a real family man who was dedicated to them.

A former psychiatric nurse, John, he said, had given so much to his community through his work and social life, especially to St Eunan’s GAA club of which he was a life long member and one of the team’s greatest ever players.

John’s coffin was draped in the black and amber flag of his club as it arrived at the cathedral for Requiem Mass, members of his club forming a guard of honour.

Many former Donegal and St Eunan’s players were in the congregation; his Donegal jersey and a family picture among the offertory gifts.

And after Mass John’s former colleagues at St Conal’s Hospital where he worked formed a guard of honour outside.

As the cortege made its way out of town to Conwal cemetery, it stopped outside O’Donnell Park where St Eunan’s club members lined up once again in his honour and presented the black and amber flag to John’s family.

Our county has lost one of its greats.

cross1A MAN who fell to his death off rocks in Bundoran yesterday had been suffering dizzy spells recently and may have fallen accidentally, Gardaí believe.

Jim Kelly, who was from Irvinestown in Co Fermanagh but who had a holiday home in the Donegal seaside town, was found near Nun’s Walk.

Relatives say Jim, who was a popular figure in the local community, had been treated in hospital in March after taking ill at Mass, complaining of feeling dizzy.

They believe the 73-year-old retired farmer may have suffered another episode of this recent illness when he fell.
