Tributes have been paid to the late father of Liverpool star Conor Bradley.

Joe Bradley passed away earlier today following a short illness.

His sad passing comes just days after County Tyrone native Conor brilliantly broke into the first-team setup at Anfield, the Aghyaran man putting in a star performance against Chelsea that grabbed back-page headlines across the Irish Sea.

The former teenage Finn Valley AC athlete has been a star of Liverpool’s academy system for several years, having stepped into the first-team fold as Trent Alexander-Arnold has battled injury.

It’s understood that it is Conor’s decision as to whether he will take part in tomorrow’s Premier League game at Arsenal following the passing of his father.

In a statement, Liverpool said:

“Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the death of Conor Bradley’s father, Joe, today. The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Conor and all of the Bradley family at this very difficult and sad time.”

“On behalf of Conor, LFC strongly urges that the family’s privacy is fully respected at this time.”

Axe man fined after trying to attack housemate

A man has appeared in court trying to hit another man with an axe in Letterkenny.

Paul Van Leemput was before Letterkenny District Court over the incident on November 24, 2022 at Cnoc Ard, Letterkenny.

Gardai were requested by paramedics to attend the address after they heard arguing from inside the house.

Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that gardai entered the sitting room and observed Van Leemput brandishing the implement.

Officers further observed him swinging the hatchet axe, attempting to strike another male and narrowly missing. Van Leemput was subsequently restrained and the hatchet axe recovered.

The 63-year-old Van Leemput, of Cnoc Ard, Mountain Top, Letterkenny, was charged that he did, while appearing to be about to commit an offence to wit, assault, in the course of a dispute, produce in a manner likely unlawfully to intimidate another person an article capable of inflicting serious injury, to wit, a hatchet axe. The charge is contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.

Solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher told the court that Van Leemput had the hatchet axe for cutting sticks for the fire. He said his client has undergone a significant medical procedure and had consumed alcohol on the day in question.

“The situation with the alcohol combined with the prescriptive medication took over,” Mr Gallagher said, adding that Van Leemput has severe mobility issues.

“It was an unfortunate incident and the other party involved has no axe to grind, shall we say,” Mr Gallagher said. “This was one of the small hatchets used for firewood. The risk of reoffending is on the lower scale.”

Van Leemput has one previous conviction, which goes back 20 years.

Judge Ciaran Liddy said he would treat the matter as if Van Leemput is a man without any previous. Van Leemput was fined €200 and given six months to pay.

Donegal company Kelsius to create 30 new jobs at its Falcarragh base

Donegal company Kelsius is to create 30 new jobs at its Falcarragh base.

The company, which currently employs 92 people, is to expand thanks to a €5M investment.

The company was founded in 2002 and has developed wireless temperature monitoring and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, which are exported to 47 countries from its base in Falcarragh.

The investment will facilitate Kelsius’ product roadmap which includes new sensor products coming to market in early 2025 and other planned software product developments.

The company has already applied to Donegal County Council for planning permission to build the expanded facility and has targeted to complete construction on the project by early 2026.

Chairman of the company, Eamon Quinn, said the €5 million investment is a “pivotal moment” for the business.

Karl Simmons, chief executive of Kelsius, told the Business Post that the expanded facility is required to allow the company to respond to a significant increase in demand for its products.

“I’m delighted that this expansion will allow us to build on this demand as we continue to provide our excellent service to existing customers, and to welcome new clients in Ireland and globally,” he said.

The expansion is expected to create 30 new jobs over the next four years at the company, including manufacturing, research and development, engineer, customer support and sales roles.

Last year, Kelsius announced that it has signed a contract with Tesco Ireland to provide wireless temperature monitoring systems across 112 of the company’s stores.

Man who kicked Garda during arrest avoids prison

A Stranorlar welder who kicked out at a Garda while resisting arrest has avoided a prison sentence.

Paul Ward was convicted and fined €500 when he appeared before Letterkenny District Court on Thursday.

Ward was charged with assaulting Garda Harrington at Letterkenny Garda Station on August 16, 2020.

The 28-year-old, with an address at Hilltop Crescent, Stranorlar, became ‘verbally abusive and increasingly agitated’ when gardai approached the scene of an incident on the night in question.

Gardai had to use pepper spray on Ward, who resisted arrest. Inspector Paul McHugh told the court that when conveyed to Letterkenny Garda Station, Ward continued to be aggressive and threatened Garda Harrington before kicking out and striking the garda on the left leg.

The court heard that Garda Harrington suffered pain and stiffness, but was not abstinent from duty after the incident.

Solicitor Mr Kieran O’Gorman, representing Ward, said his client and his brother were at a party and there was ‘a bit of an altercation’. He said the parties involved were very intoxicated at the time.

Ward has since started his own business and has not taken a drink in the time since the incident.

“When he realised what had happened, he went and contacted Garda Harrington to apologise for his behaviour and the whole incident,” Mr O’Gorman said, “When he was being put to the ground, he kicked out with his foot. It wasn’t an attack. He is very remorseful.”

Inspector McHugh confirmed that Ward called to speak with the garda and had ‘no recollection’ of what had happened. It was accepted that contact was made while Ward was being put on the ground by the garda who was attempting to restrain him.

Ward has eight previous convictions, all of which are under the Road Traffic Act.

Judge Ciaran Liddy took some time to mull over the case.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable,” Judge Liddy said. “To assault any member of the emergency services is not acceptable.”

Judge Liddy said that as contact was made as Ward was being put on the ground, Garda Harrington chose not to submit a victim impact statement and in the absence of similar previous convictions he would not impose a custodial sentence.

He said the seriousness of the incident must be marked and he convicted Ward, fining him €500 and allowing six months to pay.

Gardaí issue Bank Holiday weekend socialising advice

Gardaí in Donegal have issued advice for those who are out socialising this Bank Holiday weekend.

With Bank Holidays traditionally being incredibly busy weekends, Gardaí have issued the advice to help keep everyone safe while out and about enjoying the extra day off.

They’re asking the public to be “streetwise” when out, and to have their full evening planned out including arranging transport to and from events beforehand, as well as telling someone your plans and when you expect to be back.

Gardaí are also asking the public to avoid confrontation and reasoning with drunk or aggressive people, and instead to walk away and seek help if required, saying “if you choose to use your fists you could not only wreck the life of your victim but you could also ruin your own future. You could lose your job, your ability to travel and even your freedom, not to mention the distress you would cause your family. Just remember that one punch can have a fatal outcome.”

They are also advising to not walk alone in dark places, and to be wary of your surroundings and your own personal property.

Gardaí have also appealed in particular to men who may be involved in incidents while socialising this weekend to come forward:

“It has been found that some victims of assaults, particularly men, are embarrassed to say they have been assaulted. We encourage anybody, and in particular younger men, to report all assaults to An Garda Síochána. Anyone who has been assaulted will be treated with sensitivity by An Garda Síochána and it will be fully investigated.”

Women who altered tags in Dunnes Stores appear in court

Two women have been given a chance to get the benefit of the Probation Act after appearing in court charged with deception.

The duo were before Letterkenny District Court having altered tags on items at Dunnes Stores in Letterkenny.

Daniela Covaciu, a 23-year-old of Fortwell House, Letterkenny and Sarah Carpaci, a 25-year-old of Fortwell Apartments, Leterkenny, were charged with making gain or causing loss by deception. The charge is contrary to section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001.

Both women pleaded guilty.

Sergeant Maurice Doyle said the pair had entered Dunnes Stores at Forte Shopping Centre on February 4, 2023. They were observed altering tags on cream throws. While they paid money for the items, the shop was at a loss of €60.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor representing both Covaciu and Carpaci, said his clients have ‘moved away from influences that were there’. He said both women are married with young children.

“A more senior lady in all of this has been dealt with,” said Mr Gallagher, adding that the pair have been in Letterkenny for most of their lives and have not come to adverse attention since.

Judge Ciaran Liddy accepted jurisdiction. He said if they each paid €200 to Little Blue Heroes he would apply the Probation Act. A default order of a €200 fine was imposed and the case was adjourned until March 25.

Wicklow 0-13 v 2-23 Donegal

It was a strong start to the League season for Donegal’s hurlers this afternoon.

Despite the long trip down the road for a 12:30 throw-in in Wicklow, Donegal were well up for the challenge in this Division 2B clash.

Donegal were quick out of the gates building a 0-08 to 0-02 lead, before a sensational strike from a free saw Luke White’s effort from the 65 meter line make its way into the Wicklow goal to make the score 1-08 to 0-02.

A red card for Wicklow’s Michael Og O’Neill shortly after Donegal’s first goal meant the result was never in doubt, with Luke White also scoring his second goal of the game from a penalty late on to seal the result for Donegal, 2-23 to 0-13.

Donegal’s hurlers will now take on North West rivals Derry next week in Letterkenny.

McConalogue welcomes return of power sharing in North

The Agriculture Minister says he welcomes the return of a functional Assembly in the North.

It’s after the DUP struck a deal with the UK Government over revised Irish Sea trading rules this week.

In a statement, Minister Charlie McConalogue said that: “Watching proceedings unfold at Stormont on Saturday afternoon, I was heartened by the positive language of those who were elected to the main positions. I congratulate Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill and DUP’s Emma Little-Pengelly on their election as First Minister and Deputy First Minister, and Edwin Poots on his election as the new Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly.”

“The restoration of the Assembly after a two-year suspension is good news for the people of Northern Ireland, Donegal, the North West and the island of Ireland. Thousands of Donegal people travel to Northern Ireland every day to work, so the return of the devolved government is something they, too, will welcome. Northern Ireland has suffered because of a non-functioning government, and this has had real and lasting impacts on the everyday lives of people,” he said.

“I sincerely hope that we have seen the last ever suspension of the Assembly, so the ultimate challenge of all the MLAs is to make sure they do whatever it takes to ensure that it stays in place. The focus must now switch to what the Assembly can do over the remaining three years of its five-year mandate. For people’s economic and social well-being, a new Northern Ireland with a new direction is needed,” Minister McConalogue added.

“I am confident that the new executive will waste little time in getting down to work. The restoration of the Assembly will give a timely boost to North-South relations and will help realise the full potential of the all-Ireland economy. I also believe there is a genuine willingness in the new Assembly to work together, help each other, and carry out their duties for the greater good. The interests of the people of Northern Ireland are only properly served by a functioning executive and assembly. The Irish government will support the new Northern Ireland government in any way it can as get down to the business of addressing the most immediate priorities.”

“I extend my best wishes to all involved with the new Northern Ireland Executive, particularly to the new Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Andrew Muir, who I look forward to working with,” Minister McConalogue said.

Donegal hold on for victory against Cavan in National League

Cavan 0-12 v 0-13 Donegal

Donegal’s first away game in the National League took them to Kingspan Breffni Park to take on Cavan, who like themselves had started their campaign last week with an impressive away victory over Kildare.

Jim McGuinness rung the changes as Shaun Patton returned from suspension, Oisín Gallen from injury, Eoghan Ban Gallagher started following his return off the bench last week and Stephen McMenamin and Milford’s Rory O Donnell were both included in the starting line-up.

The floodlights were on for the throw-in and a strong breeze blew mostly across the pitch but thankfully the rain had cleared. The other three games in Division Two had been completed before this one began with wins for Armagh, Fermanagh and Louth which meant that the winners of this one would join Armagh at the top of the table on four points going into next week’s free weekend.

The teams shared six points in the opening ten minutes, Patrick McBrearty with two and Oisín Gallen for Donegal, Padraig Faulkner, Paddy Lynch and James Smith for Cavan, 0-03 apiece. Donegal’s Caolan McGonagle was black carded, reported by linesman Barry Cassidy from Derry for an incident involving Cavan’s Dara McVeety but responded well with a super point from Oisín Gallen and they led by one.

After a scoreless period, Ciaran Thompson from play and Oisín Gallen from a long range free added points and the lead was three. Paddy Lynch converted a free but Gallen responded again with another super point and they led by three again, 0-07 to 0-04

Donegal lost Eoghan Ban Gallagher with an injury, Mark Curran came in and Paddy McBrearty added his third point as Donegal led 0-08 to 0-04 at half-time.

After Jamie Brennan had missed a good chance, Cavan kicked two points from Dara McVeety and Paddy Lynch and then CIaran Brady fisted a third to leave just one in it, 0-07 to 0-08.

Back came Donegal with two excellent points from play by Oisín Gallen and Jeaic McKelvey followed by a Patrick McBreaty free put Donegal four ahead again, 0-11 to 0-07. Sub Caoimhin O Reilly kicked two quick points, Jamie Brennan replied but points from Paddy Lynch and James Smith in quick succession left just one between them, 0-12 to 0-11 and set up a grandstand finish.

Oisín Gallen kicked a super free to make it a two point game again, Paddy Lynch replied in the fifth minute of injury time but the final whistle ended a cracker of a game and a important victory for Donegal.

Cavan: Gary O Rourke, Oisin Kiernan, Killian Brady, Jason McLaughlin, James Smith (0-01), Niall Carolan, Padraig Faulkner (0-01), Killian Clarke, Ryan Donohoe, Ciaran Brady, Dara McVeety (0-01), Gerard Smith, Paddy Lynch (0-05), Ryan O Neill, Tiernan Madden. Subs: James Galligan for Donohue (h/t), Ryan Brady and Caoimhin O Reilly (0-02), for O Neill and Madden (52mins), Cormac O Reilly (0-01), for Galligan (65 mins), Cian Madden for Kiernan (70mins).

Donegal: Shaun Patton, Eoghan Ban Gallagher, Brendan McCole, Domhnall McGiolla Bhride, Ryan McHugh, Caolan McGonagle, Stephen McMenamin, Ciaran Thompson (0-01), Daire O Baoill, Rory O Donnell, Odhran Doherty, Shane O Donnell, Patrick McBrearty (0-04), Oisin Gallen (0-06), Jamie Brennan (0-01). Subs: Mark Curran for Gallagher (34mins), Oisín Caulfield and Micheal Langan for Shane O Donnell and Rory O Donnell (h/t), Jeaic McKelvey (0-01) for Mc Giolla Bhride (41mins), Luke McGlynn for Brennan (70mins).
