It was a busy Bike Week at Finn Wheelers Cycling Club with three events starting with the Community Evening Cycle on Tuesday evening (14th May), Ladies Cycle on Wednesday evening (15th May) and ending with a Breakfast Cycle on Sunday morning, 19th May.

Each cycle explored the beautiful landscape and scenery of the Finn Valley and East Donegal.

The club said it was great to be joined by people new to cycling or who haven’t been out on a bike for a while in perfect weather for cycling. The club was also joined by members of the neighbouring Club Rothaíochta Chú Uladh.

There was plenty of chat and banter at all events with refreshments and plenty of spot prize winners afterwards.

The final Bike Week event was the Breakfast Cycle on Sunday morning. Over 30 cyclists set off at 9am to complete the 30km and 40km routes working up an appetite for a hearty cooked breakfast in the restaurant at Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Clubhouse with beautiful views over the golf course.

Club chairperson Brian Mc Elhinney thanked everyone for coming out to participate in the cycle events and invited participants to join the weekly club cycles which are every Sunday morning at 9am and every Tuesday & Thursday evening at 7pm. All cycles depart from Glenside Business Park.

The club is encouraging the formation of a women’s group for a weekly club cycles starting on Friday 24th May, departing Glenside at 7pm. More information on weekly activities is available on the Finn Wheelers social media pages.

National Bike Week is an annual celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling with events around the country for all levels weather a seasoned cyclist or a newcomer.

The incentive was a success for the Finn Wheelers club with new and returning members and people trying group cycling for the first time which was great to see.

For anyone looking to join the club and the weekly cycles you can contact the club at 086 8059456, by emailing finnwheelers@gmail.com or messaging through the Finn Wheelers Facebook page.

The club would like to acknowledge the support from Donegal Sports Partnership, Donegal County Council, National Transport Authority and Cycling Ireland for the Bike Week events.

With thanks to Gerard McHugh for the photos.

Children’s Ombudsman received 27 complaints from Donegal

$

Twenty-seven complaints were made to the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) in 2023 on behalf of children in Donegal, a new report shows.

There was a 3% increase in the number of complaints from county Donegal, while a total of 1,790 complaints were made nationally.

Education was once again the biggest concern, with complaints about access to school
places, bullying, school transport, the State Exams Commission and access to complaint procedures in schools.

Uncertain Times, the OCO’s Annual Report for 2023, shows that complaints are becoming more complex, with one in five relating to more than one State agency.

After education (40%), health and Tusla were the most complained about topics (both 23%), along with housing (7%). While not in the OCO’s remit, a notable 4% of complaints related to Early Childhood Education and Care, for which there is no robust oversight of the complaints.

The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon from Donegal, said:  “Children’s issues are fighting for Government’s attention at a time when there is a housing crisis, a cost-of-living crisis, an international protection crisis, and when our public services are under increasing pressure.

“These issues are all having an unquantifiable impact on children too, yet they are not necessarily seen as children’s issues, thus protecting the State from having to properly fulfil its obligation to them.”

Dr Muldoon said this is seen particularly when it comes to children’s health and mental health services.

“Children are still waiting far too long for vital, life-changing spinal surgeries and our Children’s Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are not uniformly of a high standard across the board. In some parts of the country, as the Mental Health Commission Review showed last year, these services are completely unfit for purpose.

“There are some parents of children with complex disabilities who are being forced to leave their children at hospitals and special schools in the hope of triggering the right supports and services they need to care for them at home. While we are also still concerned about the safety and welfare of children in Direct Provision.

“Homelessness and family homelessness in particular is at an all-time high, with the number of children without a home surpassing the 4,000 mark at the start of the year. And yet Ireland is one of the richest countries in the world. For many children thankfully, Ireland is indeed a great place to grow up in and they are living happy and fulfilled lives. But this is not the case for all.”

Fund expansion to propel Donegal’s film and audio-visual industries

$

Donegal’s rugged and atmospheric beauty has made it an ideal location for film and TV production over the decades, but a new expansion of the WRAP investment fund will show the county has more than just scenery to offer.

WRAP (Western Region Audio-Visual Producer’s Fund) is expanding from funding individual productions to investment of up to €200,000 in film, TV, games, and animation companies based in the West of Ireland.

It will also empower producers and companies in the region through more direct support via the newly established WRAP Screen Commission. This aims to ensure the WRAP Region – Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Clare, and Donegal – can compete with the east coast in terms of the kind of production which can be attracted here.

Donegal’s potential has been underlined by the WRAP-funded TV series Obituary, which was shot in Bundoran and Ballyshannon. Starring Siobhán Cullen and Michael Smiley, it was described by The Irish Times as “ghoulishly good fun”.

Since WRAP’s inception in 2018, it has supported 32 projects, including Obituary, which was IFTA nominated and has recently been picked up by several global broadcasters, including Netflix, as well as to services across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

WRAP has already had a significant impact on the AV industry in the West, supporting award- winning TV series Smother, and Ireland’s Wild Islands, as well as the films Calm With Horses, Wild Mountain Thyme, My Sailor, My Love, and Death of a Ladies’ Man.

Together, these projects have received 98 award nominations and 13 wins. The fund has seen upwards of €33 million (€40.2 million including non-regional cast) spend in the region.

Allan Mulrooney, CEO, Western Development Commission has welcomed the creation of the WRAP Screen Commission, saying, “This scaling of funding to support the whole AV ecosystem in the Western Region is very much complementary to WDC’s ongoing strategy of fostering the emerging CreaTech sector in the region. Through this clustering of investment, the Western Region is strengthening its competitive advantage of offering stunning and unique film locations complete with the necessary infrastructure that enables us to attract international interest.”

The screen industry in the West of Ireland is also undergoing a period of expansion in the number of production studios and facilities based in, and building their businesses, here. WRAP’s focus on longer-term support and development of the film, TV, games and animation industries in the WRAP Region will help create a sustainable, self-propagating AV sector in the West.

A case of alleged assault against a Donegal County Councillor has been adjourned until next week.

Frank McBrearty is facing a charge of assaulting a Donegal County Council official at the County House in Lifford.

McBrearty, a 54-year-old of Tullyvinney, Raphoe, is charged that on May 3, 2023 at County House, Lifford, he assaulted Mr Patsy Lafferty.

The charge is contrary to Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

When the matter was mentioned out of turn at Letterkenny District Court, McBrearty’s solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, queried why the matter was being called at that point.

McBrearty, an independent County Councillor, was not present for the short mention of the matter.

Mr Michael Staines, a Dublin-based solicitor representing Donegal County Council in the case, told the court that he was ‘here on a watching brief’ and thanked the court for calling the matter prior to the lunch break.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham adjourned the matter to Buncrana District Court on May 29, 2024.

Kerr impresses in MotoAmerica Superstock debut

Donegal motorcyclist Richard Kerr finished in an impressive fourth place at the MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 Championship race at the weekend.

The Kilmacrennan man, and his AMD Motorsport/RK Racing team, were making their debut at the event, one of the series taking place at the picturesque Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.

Competing at the venue for the very first time, the 2.38-mile circuit saw Kerr run in sixth place in his qualifying group with a best time of 1’26.568, a more than encouraging 1.657s adrift of pole position man and reigning champion Hayden Gillim. On the overall qualifying times though, he had to settle for 12th place and a fourth-row start.

With two races on the schedule, he had plenty of opportunities to improve and did so immediately with a solid eighth place in the opening 14-lap race. However, lapping a full second than he’d managed in qualifying, the second encounter saw him move up the order to take an excellent fourth place at the chequered flag.

That made him the second Honda rider to finish with the excellent results already placing him third overall in the early championship table behind fellow Honda rider Gillim, who won both races at Barber Park, and Bryce Prince.

In addition to the two Stock 1000 races, Kerr also contested the three MotoAmerica Superbike races which featured multiple champions Cameron Beaubier and Jake Gagne as well as World Superbike Championship podium finishers Loris Baz and Xavi Fores. Again, the Kilmacrennan man acquitted himself well and with 15th in Saturday’s race, he improved to 11th and 12th on Sunday to pick up ten hard-earned points.

“Overall it was a good weekend, what with a new track for me to learn, first time racing against the American riders and my first time on Dunlop tyres so there was a lot to take in during the weekend,” he said.

“We had a lot on our plate so to come away third in the Superstock standings is very pleasing. I was also pleased with my rides in the Superbike races where I ended being the second best placed Superstock rider across the three races. The heat wasn’t too bad as I’ve been training hard and that paid dividends as with five races, it was a busy weekend. I picked up some nice prize money too so overall, it was a really enjoyable experience.”

Kerr said he is now looking forward to the next round at Brainerd in June.
