Gardaí roll out bodyworn cameras from today

The use of body worn cameras begins today for frontline gardaí in parts of Dublin.

The modern policing move launched with 100 gardaí at Store Street, Pearse Street and Kevin Street stations, with two other stations in Limerick and Waterford cities to follow in the coming months.

The cameras allow gardaí to securely acquire and process digital evidence of the accurate recording of incidents in the line of duty. The cameras expedite analysis, enhance situational awareness, and sometimes protect police from harm.

It is anticipated that by the end of June, 350-400 frontline Gardaí in Dublin will be fully trained and have the cameras in use.

An Garda Síochána is undertaking three phased introductions as part of its proof of concepts stage. Each phase involves the use of a range of Body Worn Cameras by frontline Gardaí in specific locations nationwide. The three Proof of Concept phases will test the technical aspects of each camera, how they will be used operationally in addition to the training, Code of Practice and governance of their use.

‘We will hold insurance industry to account’– Doherty

Deputy Pearse Doherty has welcomed his Bill to hold the insurance industry to account moving to the next stage of becoming law.

Yesterday, the Judicial Council (Amendment) Bill moved to Committee Stage, a further stage in the bill becoming law.

The Judicial Council (Amendment) Bill would hold the insurance industry to account and put pressure on insurance companies to reduce their prices.

Insurance companies will be forced to show how they have or have not passed on reduced claims costs to their customers, and by how much, euro for euro.

Speaking today, the Donegal TD said “My legislation, the Judicial Council (Amendment) Bill, will hold the industry to account and put pressure on companies to reduce insurance premiums.

“The Bill will now come before the Committee in the coming weeks, the next stage in the legislation becoming the law.

“The insurance industry continues to rip off motorists and small businesses with high prices.

“Since 2020 the insurance industry has recorded sky-high profits while paying out dividends to their shareholders.

“Despite the cost and number of claims falling since the pandemic, car insurance prices have risen since 2022.

“At the same time, small businesses and voluntary groups are struggling to find affordable insurance as they continue to be hit with rip-off prices.

“For years the insurance industry called for reforms to reduce the cost of claims.

“That is what they got with the introduction of the Personal Injury Guidelines more than three years ago, which slashed the cost of claims for insurance companies.

“It is clear that the insurance industry has pocketed these savings to boost their profits instead of passing these savings onto customers.

“My legislation, the Judicial Council (Amendment) Bill would force the insurance industry to report to the Central Bank detailing how it has or hasn’t passed on these savings to customers – euro for euro.

“This would hold the industry to account and apply downward pressure on prices.

“There are no more excuses for the insurance industry.

“In the coming weeks, my legislation will come before the Finance Committee – the next stage in the bill becoming law.

“Time is up for the insurance industry and I am determined to make this legislation law.”

GAA: Cork boss Cleary says his side is ready for a huge Donegal challenge

Cork senior GAA manager John Cleary said he is hoping Donegal’s encounter last weekend will have taken plenty out of Jim McGuinness’ men.

The sides square up tomorrow at Páirc Uí Rinn with throw-in at 2.30pm in the All-Ireland SFC Group 3 Round 2 clash.

Cleary is aware that Donegal are the only team in the country that can boast an unbeaten run this year.

He is hoping that they can also reverse the league fixture which saw his side go down by 11 points to the Ulster kingpins.

“We have seen from far out really that Donegal are a very formidable team.

“We played them in the first match in the league and that day they beat us by 11 points, so we got the first pasting from them really.

“Even since then, they went to Derry and won, beat Tyrone after extra-time, beat Armagh after extra-time, and the last day they were playing at home, and they put in that performance against Tyrone. It was probably the best performance of any team this year. We will be hoping that game took a bit out of them.

“We are well warned but we are ready for it, and we have prepared accordingly. We knew from the last few weeks that it was the Ulster champions that we would have in Páirc Uí Rinn. So, as I said, we have been preparing for this, and we intend putting our best foot forward on Saturday.”

“The transformation under Donegal has been remarkable this season under Jim McGuinness in what is his first campaign back at the helm. Their ability to mix things up has been particularly eye-catching, so efficient with and without the ball.

“Donegal can play in two or three different ways.”

But Cleary says he has to concentrate on what his side can offer.

“We will have our game plan and we will do the things we think we are good at. That’s all we can do. We can’t worry an awful lot about what they will do. The first thing is we will have to do the things that we are good at and then when we haven’t the ball, obviously we will have to try and limit their effectiveness.

“It won’t be easy, but we have a plan as well and hopefully that will be effective on Saturday.”

Jim McGuinness is hoping as many fans as possible make the trip down south as he has already spoken about the support and their sixteenth player.

The game is not being broadcast live or streamed.

Both say this “ambitious plan” will develop adult acute inpatient beds over the course of the next seven years.

An announcement made earlier this week revealed the new beds will be provided between 2029 and 2031.

“We welcome the commitment to enhancing infrastructure and capacity that we know we badly need in our region. This investment will help address the Urgent and Emergency Care pressures and support a regional balance of capacity provision,” said Ann Cosgrove, Interim CEO of the Saolta University Health Care Group.

Sean Murphy, LUH hospital manager also welcomed the announcement adding: “These new beds will greatly benefit our local communities and we look forward to progressing these plans as quickly as possible.”

Buncrana Music Festival are delighted to announce the arrival of a fantastic new stage and rig for Buncrana Music Festival (BMF) 2024.

A state-of-the-art big top will set the scene for the seventh Buncrana Music Festival held on the front shoreline of Buncrana town.

The new big top marquee will ensure all festival fans will get to see the amazing line up of top Irish acts in the comfort of a sheltered setting. The big top, due to its unique and innovative height and design, still allows for festival goers to look out and enjoy the views over the Swilly with its fully retractable sides.

The festival organisers this year have secured the best of Irish line for the BMF due to take place over the bank holiday weekend 1st & 2nd June.

Headlining on Saturday 1st June is Dan McCabe a huge homegrown Irish favourite with over 60k followers on Instagram. Dan had risen to fame during lockdown posting videos to help escape the gloom and bring a bit of joy to the country, little did he know these recordings would be viewed over 12 million times far beyond Ireland, bringing him to the attention of RTE producers. This led to his performing The Parting Glass after the Presidential New Years Speech in 2020. Dan has continued to grow his audience, enjoying his mix of Irish Folk music, and with the release of his post-COVID debut album ‘Dan McCabe – Songs for Ireland’ his popularity has continued to soar!  BMF are delighted to bring Dan to Donegal.

On Sunday 2nd June the line-up includes the Irish star headliner Darren Kiely from County Cork, who will be coming to BMF following a number of sell out shows across Europe, the UK and Ireland in the weeks before he brings his unique sound to BMF. Darren’s music comes from his inherited love of traditional music intertwined with modern influences. Darren’s songs have hit Ireland’s Viral Charts and include “How Could You Love Me”, “Ella” and “Time to Leave”. He has had over 6.5 million total global streams under his belt, with 3.2 million likes and 283k followers on Tik Tok – BMF are delighted to be bringing him to Donegal’s if not Ireland’s premier music festival!

Also on the same Sunday bill is another major Irish act, Chasing Abbey, a ‘Trad House’ act not afraid to mix up Irish traditional music with their fusion of dance pop sound. They combine all of their talents as multi-instrumentalist, vocalists and producers to create a unique sound that is Chasing Abbey. Their hit song ‘Oh My Johnny’ will be blasting out over the Swilly, definitely not one to miss!

Also, on the Sunday BMF line-up is viral sensation Allie Sherlock, Allie will be known to audiences as the young Irish woman who took the world by storm in an appearance on The Ellen Show in June 2018. Before this Allie was famous for her stunning performances on the streets of Dublin including her singing Ed Sheeran’s ‘Supermarket Flowers’ which went viral, since then Ellie has had numerous viral videos as well as reaching over 5.7 million subscribers and counting!

Some tickets for the Bank Holiday weekend festival are still available visit the Buncrana Music Festival Facebook page or www.buncranamusicfestival.com

And BMF have brought even more to their programme for this year with the new Family Friendly festival attraction during the festival which sold out quickly, but the nearby Buncrana playpark makes sure there is still something for the little ones to do along with the fantastic coastal walk around the area.

BMF would like to thank their loyal supporters and business partners for continuing to support this unique music festival set in one of the most glorious places in Ireland, they look forward to welcoming old friends and new this year!

Donegal Hotel Federation boss pleads with election candidates to support 8,000 local jobs

$

0

The Chair of the Donegal branch of the Irish Hotels Federation has written an open letter to election candidates seeking support for pro-tourism policies in advance of the upcoming local elections.

Aisling Arnold, of Arnolds Hotel in Dunfanaghy, said a flourishing tourism and hospitality industry is vital for Ireland’s prosperity and economic well-being, both nationally and at a local level.

Speaking on behalf of hotels and guesthouses across Donegal, Ms Arnold said her industry plays an essential role in delivering balanced regional growth and makes a major economic contribution locally.

As the country’s largest indigenous employer, tourism enterprises support over 270,000 livelihoods in every town and county, including some 8,000 in Donegal.

Ms Arnold said “While we have seen a welcome recovery in recent years, tourism and hospitality businesses are now facing a significant number of pressing challenges with implications for the longer-term sustainable development of our industry. These include the exceptionally high cost of doing business, pressures on consumer finances, skills shortages and an uncertain outlook for key tourism markets.

“Local Authorities have an essential role to play in supporting our local tourism economy by helping to ensure the right conditions are in place to sustain further recovery. It is therefore of the utmost importance that elected Councillors do everything in their power to make sure that tourism is at the top of the agenda while working closely with local tourism stakeholders to support growth and sustain local employment.”

Ms Arnold said she was encouraging all candidates to support local tourism policy priorities which are outlined below:

  • Greater collaboration with the tourism sector

It is vital that local authorities support greater development of tourism at a local level, working closely and collaboratively with state agencies and industry bodies in delivering regional tourism initiatives and helping tourism enterprises to diversify and attract visitors all year round.

  • Support for community-based tourism

Significant untapped potential exists to support tourism initiatives driven by local community groups, including events that will deepen links with the diaspora. Local authorities have an important role to play by working more closely with community organisations to help create compelling reasons to visit, including during the off-peak tourism season.

  • Renewed focus on local government efficiencies

There must be a greater focus on efficiencies and cost savings in the delivery of local government services, and this must be reflected in reduced local authority rates. This is of critical importance given the serious competitiveness issues businesses are facing with spiralling costs of doing business.

  • Availability of accommodation

A greater focus is required to address the shortage of housing accommodation which is having a serious impact on the ability of businesses and tourism enterprises to attract employees.

Reduction in tourism VAT – Given the importance of tourism to our local economy here in Donegal, I would also ask for your support of tourism-friendly policies at a national level, including in relation to the cost of doing business. This is having enormous implications for tourism and hospitality businesses at a time when they are grappling with the effects of last September’s VAT increase, which has eroded competitiveness. I would therefore urge your support for a review of this decision by Government and, at a minimum, a reduction in the rate of VAT to 9% for food-related services, where margins are under tremendous pressure.

“I would also urge you to encourage debate on the importance of putting tourism at the top of our local economic development agenda and raise this as an issue for discussion in the elections,” she said.

Man arrested for stealing on day he got out of prison

A man who stole an ice cream from a Letterkenny shop was also found in possession of a stolen electronic tablet – just hours after being released from prison.

Seamus Donaghey was before Buncrana District Court arising out of matters on August 17, 2023.

Gardai received a call at 8.55pm on the day in question. The defendant had stolen an ice cream from Clarke’s Newsagents at Lower Main Street.

When gardai arrived, Donaghey, now aged 31 and of no fixed abode, was unsteady on his feet and using profanities.

Donaghey was arrested under the Public Order Act and conveyed to Letterkenny Garda Station. He was searched on arrival at the garda station and an electronic tablet worth €150 was located. This was identified as belonging to an adjacent takeaway.

The tablet was subsequently returned to the takeaway.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for Donaghey, said his client is currently serving a sentence in Maghaberry Prison in Northern Ireland. He said Donaghey had issues with alcohol and apologised for the incident.

Donaghey was fined €100 and given six months to pay with legal aid granted to Mr Gallagher.

On August 17 last, Donaghey was released from prison having spent two months in custody after being caught in Donegal in a car that was hijacked in Derry.

Donaghey and a co-accused – Bridget Mongan, 33, of Foyle Road in Derry – were arrested on the N13 road at Raymoghey, Manorcunningham on June 16 at a checkpoint set up as part of a large policing operation around the Donegal International Rally.

Donaghey was charged with unlawfully using a vehicle without the consent of the owner.

The PSNI received a report of the unlawful taking of a vehicle, a black Ford Focus, from Abercorn Road on June 16.

At 11.09pm on the same date, the vehicle was observed at Raymoghey. Gardai arrested both Donaghey and Mongan.

It was alleged that a call was made to a takeaway delivery person in Derry. When the person came to the appointed address to deliver the food, they arrived at a derelict address and the vehicle was forcibly seized.

Donegal’s techno star Modeā ready to light up Electric Arcade

Donegal music producer Modeā is ready to shine at Strabane’s first ever dance festival – Electric Arcade.

Modeā, aka 22-year-old Cristian McDaid from Newtowncunningham, has been blazing a trail in the dance scene in the last two years.

Now, he’s excited to bring his electrifying beats to Strabane’s Electric Arcade on 15th June, headlining alongside Dense and Pika.

“The North West really has been missing an electronic event like this for a long time, so I’m delighted to be playing a part in something new and fresh for the first time in Strabane,” he says.

Modeā promises a special treat for the home crowd, with a selection of unreleased tracks from his upcoming second-half-of-2024 releases.

Starting his musical odyssey early, at just seven years old, Modeā has honed a sound like no other packed with mind-altering techno, trance and euphoric melody.

Modeā

2022 saw the release of Modeā’s ‘Shine’ on Alan Fitzpatrick’s We AreThe Brave, being tipped as one of the most anticipated releases of the year and received a mass of support from Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Adam Beyer and Joseph Capriati to name a few. ‘Shine’ also received multiple airplays across Radio 1 by none other than Pete Tong and Sarah Story.

The past year has given Modeā incredible travel and collaboration opportunities. He rounded 2023 off with a release on Dutch label Spinnin’ Records with the single ‘Language’ which received a lot of DJ support and airplay across BBC Radio 1. Before that he worked with Brazilian artist Victor Ruiz on a two track EP which came out on Adam Beyer’s label Drumcode. It reached the Number One spot on Beatport’s overall releases.

More recently, he’s been having fun with his style.

“In the studio I’ve been experimenting a lot, trying to be as different as possible,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve learned more about myself as an artist in the last year than I have in the past 10 years. One thing I’m very conscious of is to not box myself in to any one ‘style’ and it’s been a breath of fresh air not having that added weight and being able to create freely. That being said, I have a tonne of new music that I’m ready to share going in to the second half of 2024 and I’m very excited to road test the tracks I’ve been working on to the Strabane crowd!

“Playing to a home crowd is always an amazing experience. Out of every crowd I’ve played to in different countries, the energy that the Irish crowds are able to bring is something special. Growing up I was raised listening to Electronic Music, I think a lot of Irish people can relate to that and I think that plays a huge role in setting the Irish crowd apart from the rest, it’s engraved in us to love this kind of music.”

Electric Arcade takes place at Canal Basin ( Score Site ) in Strabane on Saturday 15th June.

ATU Donegal’s BA Fashion Design with Promotion students made a sustainable statement this Wednesday, transforming the university canteen into a runway for their end-of-year collections.

The showcase, themed around the green agenda, was a kaleidoscope of colours and innovative styles that breathed new life into pre-loved and discarded materials.

Pre-loved curtains, surplus fabric, and leftover materials were reimagined into everything from workwear to luxurious womenswear and striking contemporary pieces.

This year, 4th year students received a special boost from local Donegal textile houses like Hanna Hats, Magee of Donegal, and McNutt. These sponsorships challenged students to create fresh looks that incorporated traditional Donegal textiles.

In 2022 Johnny McGuinness was honoured to be co-opted to Donegal County Council, filling the seat left vacant following the sad passing of his late father, Bernard.

Cllr McGuinness has been immensely proud to carry on Bernard’s legacy of serving the people of Inishowen.

He said: “As a father, businessman and suckler farmer I have a wide understanding and knowledge of the issues affecting our community.

“Defective Concrete Blocks: As an affected homeowner, I have pledged my full support to the People’s Document. I have attended protests and delegations, sponsored transport and spoken as a representative of MAG and 100% Redress in front of members of the Oireachtas. I am currently lobbying for a Taoiseach-led response to what can only be described as a humanitarian emergency.

“Community Healthcare: Inadequacies in our healthcare services must be addressed, including additional-needs facilities and extra care for the elderly.

“Farming & Fishing: Fair prices, less bureaucracy and the preservation of fishing grounds and livelihoods are vital to the knowledge transfer and traditions of rural Ireland. Planning and

“Housing: I am a strong advocate for the delivery of rural housing which is vital to the survival of every village and town in our community.

“Business & Tourism: Inishowen must get its fair share of investment and support to ensure the survival of our local businesses.

“I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider me for your first preference vote. As always, if there is an issue of particular concern for you, please don’t hesitate to contact me.”

Finn Harps 1 – 0 Wexford FC

Sean O’Donnell was the match winner on Friday night as Finn Harps saw off Wexford FC in the first game of their weekend double header.

In the right place to convert his second of the season, O’Donnell netted the only goal of the game with a little under twenty minutes gone as Harps became just the second side this season to stop Wexford FC from finding the net, as Benjamin Lynch missed an absolute sitter on the half hour. Harps now sit in fourth with 30 points on the board after the second phase of matches.

Darren Murphy implemented three changes to his lineup and welcomed the newlywed Tony McNamee back into the starting eleven. David Cawley and Matthew Makinson also returned to the team as Finn Harps wore their special edition kit, designed in conjunction with the Bluestack Foundation, which reflected the sensory room at their headquarters.

In the sunshine, Finn Harps got off to a fast start, and Tony McNamee had an early volley blocked, while an effort from Max Johnston lacked the power to test Owen Mason. After a quarter of an hour, Harps elevated their threat to another level, and it helped them find the lead. Sean O’Donnell had flashed an effort towards goal, but it was calmly taken away from goal by Sean McHale and out for a throw-in on the right side. Tony McNamee floated the ball in, and it fell invitingly for O’Donnell at the back post as the Cardonagh man netted his second of the campaign.

Wexford FC, who had former Harps captain Ethan Boyle in their ranks, came into this fixture level on points with Harps and were unbeaten in their last seven fixtures away from Ferrycarrig Park. With just under half an hour gone, Aaron Dobbs flicked a header onto the tip of the crossbar, and what followed a few minutes later left everyone in a state of disbelief, none more so than Benjamin Lynch. With Harps on the retreat, Reece Webb played a low ball across the six-yard box, and from point-blank range, Lynch somehow sliced his effort wide of the mark.

Harps ended the half on the front foot as McNamee and O’Donnell attempted to repeat their earlier exploits; this opportunity, though, was deflected wide. Success Edogun had the last chance of the half, but his goalbound shot was thwarted by Cian O’Malley.

Into the second half, Harps almost doubled their lead with ten minutes gone, but Jamie Watson’s header directed towards the bottom corner was expertly caught by Mason. At the other end, Dobbs and Thomas Oluwa went close, with the latter’s shot saved by Conor Walsh after the hour. The opening created for Dobbs was headed off target from close range. James Keddy’s side have only failed to score in one game this season, but on the other side of the coin, they’ve only kept one clean sheet.

Wexford pushed late on to keep their record intact, but only an effort from Dobbs held any momentum and it was caught well by Walsh.

Finn Harps: Conor Walsh; Jamie Watson, Matthew Makinson, Noe Baba, Luke O’Brien; Stephen Doherty, David Cawley, Tony McNamee; Success Edogun(Patrick Ferry 90), Max Johnston, Sean O’Donnell.

Wexford FC: Owen Mason; Carl Lennox(Mark Hanratty ht), Sean McHale, Cian O’Malley, Benjamin Lynch, Ethan Boyle; Brandon McCann(Kaylem Hartnett ht), Reece Webb(Darragh Levingston 73), Aaron Dobbs; Mikie Rowe(Cian Curtis 82),  Thomas Oluwa.

Woman charged with claiming €4,000 in illegal PUP payments

A solicitor representing a woman who claimed over €4,000 in pandemic unemployment payments she was not entitled to has been told that his client should appear in court.

Catherine Anderson was not present when her case was heard at Buncrana District Court.

The court was told that Anderson, whose address was given as Elaghmore Park in Derry, used her parents’ address in Donegal to claim the payments.

Proceedings against Anderson were taken on behalf of the Minister for Social Protection.

Mr Morgan Mooney, a special investigator with the Department of Social Protection, said this matter arose as a review into payments of the pandemic unemployment payment.

Ms Anderson applied for the payment which, Mr Mooney said, she had no entitlement to do.

“She said she lost her job, but she was working with a company in Northern Ireland,” Mr Mooney said.

The payments relate to dates between March-July 2020. The court was told that the total amount paid was €4,053.

Mr Mooney agreed with Anderson’s solicitor, Mr Frank Dorrian that she cooperated fully with the investigation and added that the monies being repaid by her represents a “very significant commitment on her behalf”.

Mr Dorrian said his client is paying €400 per month now and it could be next year when she begins the pandemic unemployment payment repayments.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham noted that the accused’s address was in Derry and asked if she has since moved residence.

Mr Mooney said that Anderson has always lived in Derry, but she uses her parents’ address.

“It was necessity rather than opportunity,” Mr Dorrian said. “She has been struggling and her own emotional state was closing in. She made full and candid disclosure when spoke to.”

Mr Dorrian said his client, who has no previous convictions, is “fully motivated to discharge the monies”.

Judge Cunningham says the nature of the case provided a difficulty for the court.

“She took the step of using her parents’ address during a very difficult time,” Judge Cunningham said.

The case was adjourned to July 16 for further consideration.

“She should attend,” Judge Cunningham said.
