As Swifties descend on Dublin, independent festivals are ‘on their knees’– Donegal TD

A Donegal TD has called on the government to intervene with extra support to give local independent music festivals a chance against major international acts.

Pearse Doherty TD says at least nine established independent music festivals have been postponed or cancelled this year.

In a letter to Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Arts, Catherine Martin, he called for an urgent meeting to discuss the vital need for local festivals.

Deputy Doherty added that such festivals are the lifeblood of many Irish music acts, in particular young artists and groups looking to make a breakthrough, as well as being vital to local economies during the summer period.

“As Ireland this weekend is engulfed by Swift mania, with Swifties from all over the country and beyond descending on Dublin, you would be forgiven for thinking that the music festival scene in Ireland is booming. Nothing could be further from the truth,” Deputy Doherty said.

“In the past year, at least nine established independent music festivals have been postponed or cancelled entirely. Many more are on their knees.”

Deputy Doherty is the director and chairperson of Sultfeile in Gweedore, which will be held in two weeks’ time.

He said: “I have seen at first hand how important the festival circuit is for Irish acts, who could only dream of the support of the likes of a Taylor Swift or a Pink.

“Put simply, these festivals are the lifeblood of many Irish music acts, in particular young artists and groups looking to make a breakthrough.

“It’s not just the acts either. The success of these festivals are vital to local economies, and provide employment to a whole range of people; from food vendors to sound engineers.

“Today I have written to Minister Catherine Martin to convey that she must urgently meet with, and provide support to, the independent music festival sector.

“Without intervention and support from the minister, it is inevitable that more music festivals will be forced to close next year.”

Jim McGuinness took time out from his busy schedule this week to raise the seventh Green Flag at Scoil Mhuire Creeslough.

The Glenties man, who now lives nearby, was happy to take a break from preparations for Sunday’s All-Ireland Quarter Final clash with Louth for the local schoolchildren.

He spoke at length to the adoring pupils and emphasised to them the importance of training. Needless to say, the children were delighted to meet their special guest and Jim brought with him the Anglo-Celt Cup which also brought great excitement to the teachers and staff.

“All were delighted to see Jim and we thank him for taking the time to call to us,” local Parish Priest, Fr John Joe Duffy, said.

It was also an emotional day for the 6 th Class pupils who have now completed their primary education. They attended their farewell Mass of thanksgiving on Friday last, pictured with their class teacher Ms Claire Gallagher.

They also recently visited Aras an Uchtaran, Dail Eireann and Croke Park.

Midfielder Jason McGee makes a welcome return to the Donegal panel for Sunday’s All-Ireland Quarter Final against Louth in Croke Park.

The Cloughaneely clubman picked up an injury in last month’s defeat to Cork and did not feature either in the hammering of Clare two weeks ago. He is named at number 22 and takes his place on the bench while Dáire Ó Baoill is back in the starting lineup.

Again, McGee is replaced in the middle of the park by Ciaran Moore who had a fine outing against the Banner County in McHale Park, Castlebar.

It remains to be seen, however, if McGuinness will stick to the named starting 15 before Donegal take to the field on Sunday.

The full panel is as follows:

Uisce Eireann has been urged to carry out major pipe upgrades to solve persistent water woes in West and North West Donegal.

Residents in the Derryconner area are dealing with another outage today (Friday).

A separate outage was reported in the Glasserchoo, Meenaclady and surrounding areas yesterday.

Cllr Michael McClafferty says the issues are “extremely unfair”.

“Surely Irish Water can see that major pipe upgrades are necessary,” Cllr McClafferty said.

“We have experienced water disruptions in these areas every day this week.

“I am urgently requesting that Irish Water thoroughly examine the water service they are currently providing to the residents of Gortahork and Gweedore.

“I have requested a meeting with Irish Water to determine what actions they plan to take and when.”

Claims and counterclaims of bullying at fiery Lifford-Stranorlar AGM

There were no surprises as this morning’s Annual General Meeting of the new Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District got off to a fiery start.

From the outset, Cllr Frank McBrearty strongly objected to the fact that the meeting was held online, and not in the council chamber.

Outgoing Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr Patrick McGowan, opened the AGM as the outgoing Cathaoirleach, Liam Doherty, had retired.

Cllr McBrearty said it was ‘not lawful’ to hold the meeting online, adding that he wanted a ‘full, legal explanation’ before a new Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach could be proposed.

“This is not legal and I want an explanation that will stand up to law. I need an answer before a Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach are proposed. I’m not going to stand for bully boy tactics.”

While noting the Raphoe councillor’s concerns, Cllr McGowan proceeded to mute all participants, asking them to raise their hands to nominate representatives for both roles.

Cllr Gary Doherty (SF) was subsequently elected as Cathaoirleach with Fine Gael’s Cllr Martin Harley as Leas Cathaoirleach.

Cllr McBrearty again raised the issue of the meeting being held online.

On taking the chair, Cllr Doherty told Cllr McBrearty that he would receive a response to his question from the council director after the meeting.

The Independent responded: “This is a dictatorship. You (Cllr Doherty) can run to the guards and make accusations against me.”

As Cllr McBrearty continued to protest, Cllr Doherty quoted from Standing Orders that he could be asked to leave the meeting for ‘disorderly conduct.’

After further protestations, and warnings from Cllr Doherty, Cllr McBrearty said he would leave the meeting as he felt it was not ‘democratic.’

“This is an illegal meeting and I’m objecting to what is going on here,” Cllr McBrearty said.

Referring to ongoing matters before the courts, he added: “We will see what you (Cllr Doherty) are made of in the criminal courts. I’ll withdraw from the meeting because this is not a democratic process.”

Addressing the media, the new Cathaoirleach said he hoped ‘what went on’ this morning was not reported as ‘general disorder.’

“The disorderly conduct is coming from one member. This is absolutely ridiculous that we have to put up with this for the next five years – absolutely ridiculous,” Cllr Doherty said

He went on to accuse Cllr McBrearty of ‘gaslighting’ by claiming he was being bullied by other councillors.

The incoming Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr Harley, concurred with Cllr Doherty.

“I’ll second that and it’s sickening that we’ve five years of this ahead of us and the people of the MD will not be properly represented. Meetings are held online because of one person.”

He concluded by saying: “We want to work as cohesively as we can. I don’t want what we had earlier and don’t want to be sick to the stomach to think that I have to go to meetings and deal with this.”

Cllr Doherty said it was a ‘great honour’ to have been elected as Leas Cathaoirleach and that he was looking forward to working with all the elected members of the next five years.

Almost €30,000 has been allocated to innovative projects in Donegal supporting adults with unmet literacy needs.

Some of the projects receiving funding from SOLAS through the Collaboration and Innovation Fund include:
  • Boosting literacy skills through DIY
  • Mobile hubs for digital literacy
  • A project to drive inclusion for those with unmet literacy needs

The announcement was by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Patrick O’Donovan TD today, who said: “The innovation and diversity shown by these projects is fantastic to see and highlights the importance of having fun through learning, whether that is through music, arts, or comedy.

“This creative approach will help to reach communities such as older adults, members of the Traveller community, or persons experiencing addiction.”

Yvonne McKenna, Director of Adult Literacy for Life in SOLAS said: “Literacy needs are greater than many people realise, in Ireland, one in six adults has unmet literacy needs which can affect their everyday lives – this includes being unable to fill in a form, understand health information, help kids with homework or use the internet.

“These projects are helping adults across Ireland to build their confidence with literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy skills.

“The initiatives also demonstrate the importance of cross-community collaboration at local level. This funding will help a range of learners including older adults, Travellers, migrants, lone parents, and early school leavers gain access to key supports to benefit their needs to participate more fully in society.”

Six newly sworn members of An Garda Síochána are to be allocated to the north west region.

The members were among 157 (65% male, 35% female) who were attested today.

The northwestern region includes the entire west and north west, from Galway up as far as Donegal and including Louth.

The passing out ceremony of intake 234 was held at Templemore this morning.

The newly attested Gardaí bring to 710 the number of Probationer Gardaí attested since recruitment recommenced in 2022 following Covid-19 restrictions paused recruitment in 2020.

The new Gardaí commenced their Garda training in October 2023, and have undertaken a blend of on-line learning, on-site learning in the Garda College, and experiential learning in training Garda stations.

During their training the new Probationer Gardaí were involved in community based policing, observed and assisted in serious crime investigations, policed across the country during St Patricks Day events, and assisted at community events, Garda Youth Awards ceremonies amongst other events.

Speaking at today’s attestation, Commissioner Drew Harris welcoming the new Garda probationers said; “In applying to become a Garda you took the first steps towards a rewarding and varied career. And now as you prepare to embark on the road ahead, it is important to remember the journey to where you are today. It has taken strength. It has taken dedication. It has taken a drive to succeed, and a desire to be of service.”

Commissioner Harris reminded the new Garda probationers that: “As Gardaí you have a responsibility to serve the people of Ireland. To keep them safe. To put them first. To act ethically. Professionally. And with integrity to protect the human rights of everyone you come into contact with. As Gardaí it is your duty to maintain the highest standards. It is what the public expect and deserve, and what I expect too. Being a Garda is a privilege and an honour.”

National: Talks due on Monday as Aer Lingus cancels 122 flights next week

Both sides in the pay dispute between Aer Lingus pilots and management have accepted an invitation from the Labour Court to attend a meeting on Monday.

RTE News is reporting the invitation was issued this afternoon to the parties asking them to come to the court’s offices.

Aer Lingus has welcomed the development and confirmed its representatives will be attending.

Forsa, the parent of IALPA, said it had also accepted the invitation, saying that the “outcome of any Labour Court process will be crucial”.

“The union takes the view that we are at a critical point in this dispute,” it said.

“Should it fail, we are looking at a situation much worse than it is at present and a greater likelihood of escalating industrial action.”

It comes as another 122 flight cancellations were announced for next week as a result of the ongoing industrial action at the airline.

The latest tranche of cancelled flights are from Wednesday 3 July to Sunday 7 July and follow 270 cancelled flights from last Wednesday up to Tuesday 2 July arising from the work to rule by pilots and their planned eight-hour work stoppage tomorrow.

Aer Lingus said it was taking the step in order to continue to protect as many services as possible.

“These cancellations will be implemented today, and details will be communicated to impacted customers,” it said in a statement.

The airline added that those passengers impacted could either change their flights for free or claim a refund or voucher.

“These options will be communicated directly to impacted customers as well as travel agents, while the Aer Lingus ‘Travel Advisory’ page will also have up to the minute information on all the options,” it said.

“Aer Lingus fully understands the anxiety being experienced by customers given the uncertainty caused by IALPA’s industrial action and is giving impacted customers as many options as possible,” it added.

All Aer Lingus Regional flights, which are operated by Emerald Airlines, as well as Aer Lingus UK transatlantic flights to and from Manchester will operate as scheduled.

A full list of the impacted flights can be found on the Aer Lingus website.

Costly missed chances as Harps held by lowly Longford

Missed chances meant Finn Harps could only muster a draw away to Longford Town tonight.

Longford Town 1

Finn Harps 1

Harps began the season with an exciting comeback victory at Bishopsgate, winning 2-3 after falling 2-0 behind in the early stages at a venue that has proved productive for them in recent seasons.

Longford have been struggling this season, currently laying at the bottom of the table , so perhaps an opportunity for Darren Murphy’s team to keep that good run at this venue intact.

Patrick Ferry (main pic) returned to the starting line-up and got Harps off to the perfect start, slotting home from the left side of the attack in the 5th minute. The home side responded well and Jordan Adeyemo reacted well to a Kyle O’Connor cross but heading straight at Tim Hiemer in the 13th minute.                                                                                                                    Harps continued to look dangerous going forward and Ferry almost increased their lead in the 20th minute but his shot came back off the post with keeper Brady beaten.

Longford hit back and went close twice in quick succession, Victor Serdeniuk heading just wide in the 26th minute and a minute later Dean O Shea’s header hitting the post. Tony McNamee was next to go close with a header, glancing his effort just wide in the 36th minute. Matt Makinson could have done better with another header opportunity, missed chances that could prove costly for Harps, but at half-time they led 0-1 through Patrick Ferry’s early strike.

Success Edogun had an early chance in the second-half but he shot straight at keeper Brady in the 52nd minute. Then, Ferry fired a dangerous ball across the goalmouth and those missed chances were punished when Jordan Tallon equalised six minutes later with a good finish.

The home side, boosted by getting level, took control and had Harps under pressure and struggling to get quality possession. After a long period of no clear-cut chances, both teams went close within a minute. Mohammed Boudiaf for Longford and then home keeper Jack Brady twice denied Harps with good saves as Harps substitute Gavin McAteer impacted the game.

However it ended in a share of the points, Harps missed chances indeed proving costly.                                                                     Still, it’s a point gained and with UCD and Bray Wanderers also dropping points, it means Harps remain in a play-off position. They next host Kerry FC at Finn Park  on Thursday night, 4th July, with a 7-45pm kick-off.

Longford Town: Jack Brady    Kyle O’Connor,  Ross Fay ( Emmanuel James 86mins),  Dean O’Shea,  Viktor Serdeniuk, Karl Chambers  ( Adam Wixted 80mins), Jordan Tallon  , Mohammed Boudiaf  , Bastien  Hery  , Francis Campbell, Jordan Adeyemo.

Finn Harps: Tim Hiemer  , Jamie Watson, Noe Baba, Matthew Makinson,  Stephen Doherty , David Cawley  , Max  Johnston ,  Ryan Rainey, Tony McNamee ( Gavin McAteer 79 mins), Patrick Ferry , Success Edogun .
