Whopping €40K raised in memory of brave baby Rosie

A whopping €40,000 has been raised in just a few weeks for children’s charities in memory of a brave baby girl who passed away earlier this year.

Little Rosie Cummings from Strabane was born with a heart defect on September 21, 2023. She was the daughter of Richard and Donna Cummings (nee Cunningham from Carndonagh).

Speaking to Donegal Daily this week, heartbroken Donna said an issue with Rosie’s heart was discovered shortly after she was born. She was first transferred to hospital in Belfast, before being sent to the Children’s Heart Centre (CHC) at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin. There, she underwent surgery at just four-days-old. Two days later she had a stent inserted before undergoing open heart surgery when she was only eight-days-of-age.

“She got through all of that, but she had to go back into hospital again before Christmas time – first in Derry, then Belfast and back to Dublin,” Donna explained.

“After Christmas, she had to return to the hospital as she picked up a few viruses. After a week in hospital, she took very ill and unfortunately she could not make it as her wee heart was just not strong enough.”

Rosie passed away peacefully in Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry, on January 8, surrounded by her loving mum, dad and sisters Chelsee and Lucy and brother David.

Richard and Donna with their daughters, Chelsee and Lucy, at the fundraising dance. Missing from pic is Rosie’s big brother, David (3).

However, Donna and Richard were determined that little Rosie’s memory would live on and they wanted to do something to help other sick children.

So, they set about organising a dance in the Waterfoot Hotel, Derry, as well as a massive raffle and auction with scores of super prizes. Needless to say, the dance and raffle were a huge success as well as receiving donations through a special ‘Our Heart Warrier’ PayPal account. As a result, they have raised a whopping £34,185 (€39,795) to date for both the CHC ward at Crumlin Hospital and the Children’s Heartbeat Trust in the North.

“The generosity of the people who donated prizes and bought tickets was just unbelievable,” Donna added.

“We never expected that kind of outcome, and the crowd at the dance was just massive. The amount we raised was unbelievable and will be divided equally between both charities.”

Well done to Donna, Richard and to anyone else who contributed in any way in memory of baby Rosie.

You can still make a donation to the fund through the PayPal account which is ourheartwarrior2024@gmail.com or via any family member.

Donegal hills inspire new novel by highly regarded English writer

Donegal-based author T. S. J. Smith has just released his highly anticipated second novel.

The 39-year-old father of three, has followed up his critically acclaimed debut spy thriller, The Soviet Comeback, with Where Giants Walk.

The latest book is a fantasy which follows the incredible journey of a boy called Barry Birchwood. Where Giants Walk is inspired by the hills of Donegal – Birmingham-native Smith now lives in Mountcharles with his wife, Anne O’Driscoll, who hails from the area.

Author T. S. J. Smith.

His latest offering tells the story of Barry, a teenager with no friends, no father and no interest in having an adventure, much as he enjoys reading about them. When he stumbles on the entrance to another world where nothing is what it seems, Barry finds himself in an ancient empire that has fallen into darkness and chaos. With a ruthless overlord claiming power and giants running rampant, the resistance movement looks to Barry for help. Can he find his courage in this strange and dangerous world?

In order to survive, he must overcome much more than just his own demons.

“So much of the land that Barry’s journey takes across is inspired by the magic that seeps out of the very ground in Donegal and the mysticism that’s alive in the hills, crags, rocks and beaches of this county I’m proud to call home,” Smith said.

“My road to Donegal was something of an adventure but I don’t think I can quite compare it to what Barry has to endure!

“Much of this book was written in the wee hours of the night after being kept awake by the first of his small children.

“Once she was back to sleep it was the only time there was a period of quiet and no distractions – albeit the days did feel rather long after starting at 4am,” he adds.

“Stories full of magic and wonder such as this, that aren’t weighed down by lots of violence and things like that, that can be enjoyed by adults as much if not more than teenagers feel rare, and too often we lose that escape that our imagination can give us. Where Giants Walk was so much fun to write and really gave my imagination a workout.”

The book, which has been hailed as fantastic, page turning adventure for teenagers and adults alike, is available now to pre order via the publisher, Pegasus, and on Amazon (via the links below), or from your local bookshop:

Support scheme for inshore fishing is good news for Donegal fleet – McConalogue

$

The new scheme to support and enable the economic development of inshore fishing is good news for the Donegal fleet, according to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue.

An inshore census was conducted by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) in 2023, the analysis of which will be available shortly.

This new scheme will build on this knowledge base by capturing additional detailed information in relation to the current market knowledge and routes to market being used by inshore fishers as well as their ability to identify and access new markets.

Announcing this scheme, the Donegal minister said: “It will provide for the completion of a further survey by applicants, to inform and enable a detailed and comprehensive assessment of these aspects of the sector. This in turn will allow the Department and BIM to develop and target effective supports that will assist inshore fishers to respond to the market challenges they face.”

“I have met with representatives of the inshore fleet on a number of occasions in the past year to discuss the challenges facing this fleet, in particular those affecting their ability to access markets. I had indicated previously at the Joint Oireachtas Committee meeting in June that I would be progressing a scheme specifically in response to these challenges.

“One of the challenges that we have faced when designing supports for the inshore fleet has been the gaps in the data and knowledge available to us. Once we have this additional data, we will then be able to target supports more effectively and support the continued economic viability of the inshore fleet in coming years,” Minister McConalogue added.

In order to encourage participation in the survey, and in recognition of the significant administrative work involved for those who do participate, the scheme will make provision for applicants to receive a payment, and the survey will be carried out in two stages.

Payments will be based on vessel length, and will be paid in two instalments, one on completion of each stage of the survey. Under the scheme, a total of €3,500 will be available to vessels under 8m in length, and a total of €5,000 to vessels between 8 and 17.99m in length.

The initial instalment will be €2,000 for eligible vessels on the completion of Stage 1 of the survey with the remaining balance on completion of Stage 2. The Minister has asked BIM to develop and implement this scheme, which will be funded under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. It is expected to open for applications in September 2024.

“I was pleased to announce the opening of the Inshore Fisheries Scheme recently, which provides vital funding support to the inshore fleet for both on-board and on-shore investment, and the opening of the V-notching Scheme, which is an important conservation scheme for inshore lobster fisheries. This new scheme will complement these schemes, providing the support needed to assist the fleet in developing and accessing markets, and getting a fair price for their catch,” the Donegal minister commented.

From Hard Hat to Helping Hand: Caregiving is more than a job for former construction worker

A Carndonagh man who has had a complete career change from construction to caring declares that no day feels like work when he’s making a difference in people’s lives.

Two years ago, John Paul Curley decided to leave his plastering trade and pursue Health Service Skills training through Donegal Education and Training Board’s Further Education and Training (FET) Service.

The inspiration for this change came from his personal experience of caring for his mother and witnessing the valuable work of professional carers.

Now working for the Irish Wheelchair Association, John Paul gets immense satisfaction in his daily interactions assisting individuals in their homes

“That’s the thing about the course; it gives you a job for life,” he says. “I wouldn’t even see it as a job. After all the years working at building sites, I never wake up any morning thinking of it as going to work.

“You are doing something worthwhile.”

John Paul’s journey has inspired others around him to take the leap. His partner Patricia Kelly recently completed her year of training on the same course, and he has two other friends beginning the course in September.

The part-time course, which runs from September to May for two days a week, offered John Paul the flexibility to continue working while studying.

“We were in class on a Tuesday, and sometimes I would drive to Dublin that night, be plastering all week, and then sit in the van on the laptop on Thursdays for my class. I was determined to do it,” he recalls.

John Paul attributes much of his success to the support from Donegal Education and Training Board (ETB).

“The ETB was very supportive of someone like me going back to education. I’d never done anything like this in my life before, but everything was straightforward. It’s years and years since I did a module and I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, but when you deal with the ETB, the way they teach and present the course it helps you big time.

“I’d like to thank my tutor Anne Tinney for all her help,” he adds.

John Paul Curley

The programme consists of eight modules, including care skills, care support, and work practice.

“They were all straightforward. Once you did the first module, you were able to do the rest. Palliative care was the one I got the most out of,” John Paul says.

John Paul did his work experience in St. Columbcille Village in Clonmany. As well as putting his skills into practice, he learned a valuable lesson – that he would prefer community outreach work.

“The Irish Wheelchair Association suited me better, and I learned about it when the ETB held recruitment days in Letterkenny. As soon as I finished the course, I was contacted by the Irish Wheelchair Association and got a job that week.”

John Paul also availed of career guidance support through Donegal ETB, which gave him valuable pointers for the interview.

John Paul said he grew in confidence in his work over a few short weeks.

“You learn everything you need to know with the ETB and after a couple of weeks on the job you are flying,” he said.

“There is a high demand for men through all the companies throughout the whole sector,” he notes.

“As a home help, you are also like a friend to people. I take the craic I had in the building sites and take that into the houses and we all get on great.

“There is the social side too, because at the end of the day, you are coming into someone’s house.

“Being in a class with other people, meeting and chatting, builds your confidence up for the job as well.”

John Paul said that he and his class colleagues benefitted from mutual respect from their tutor during their training.

“They treat you like an adult. We’ve all children and families and different things going on everything is there to accommodate that as well,” he said.

When asked if he would recommend the Health Service Skills programme, John Paul says he already has numerous times!

“I tell people to 100% go for it. My own partner has done her first year and is going into home help work. I’ve encouraged a man and his wife to start the course in September. A lot of people couldn’t believe I would do it, but I stuck it out and did it. Now, when people ask me how to do it, I say, ‘Go to the ETB; they’ll take it from there.’”

John Paul’s course is now open for applications in Buncrana and Letterkenny, along with a range of other full-time courses in this area – apply through the links below.

Poignant start remembers all those who loved the Letterkenny Reunion

A list of those deceased members involved in the Letterkenny Reunion over the years read out by Fr. Stephen Gorman at the mass in St. Eunan’s Cathedral on Sunday evening added a touching poignancy to the opening event.

It was also a tribute to all those who have participated in the Reunion since it came into existence in 1991.

By Paddy Walsh

In his introductory remarks at the outset of the Mass, Fr. Gorman, himself a native of Letterkenny, who described it as an honour to have been asked to celebrate it, said they were gathering as friends to reminisce about the past and think about all the decent people from the town who had gone to their rest.

“I think especially of Dessie Kelly who was a fundamental part of Letterkenny and of this Reunion. We pray for all the dead and ask the Lord to grant them a place of light, happiness and peace.”

In his homily, Fr Gorman revealed that when the Reunion started in 1991 he was only five years of age. “So I don’t recall too many memories from the early days. God rest my own father, Seamus Gorman, he would just love to be here at an event like this evening.”

The celebrant went on to list the names of all who had made an impact on the community and town including Dessie Kelly, James McMonagle, Johnny Gallagher, Patsy James, Patsy Shiels, Nelius Doherty, Rebecca McFeely McLaughlin, Goretti Donnelly Peoples, Jim Lynch, Barry Lynch and Noel McGroarty and those other men and women who had contributed to the Reunion.

Fr. Gorman said they would always look back at the many memories that had been made over the past 33 years including the re-enactment of the Fair Day, the mystery bus tour, dancing in the Devlin Hall and the various football matches that had taken place.

“The traditional variety of events will be staged to keep the patrons entertained but plenty of the entertainment will be provided by the townies themselves as stories and anecdotes abound over the four days and nights – some of them perhaps even true!.”

He went on: “Let us pray that many memories of joy will be made. The importance of these days is coming together to reconnect with our heritage of this town, to share stories, to socialise together, to reminisce, to be grateful for the blessings that we have.

“I know this is the last Reunion but I am sure in twenty years time, this tradition might start anew,” predicted Fr Gorman.

The music for the opening mass was provided by Patrick Doherty and the Cathedral Folk Choir.

And later in the night, more music courtesy of Martin Orr and the Honky Tonk Heroes at the opening dance in the Station House Hotel where the Reunionites gathered to get re-acquainted with one another and in some cases meet up for the first time in decades at this the last ever Letterkenny Reunion.

A large collection of books are to go on sale to fund repair works of a Co Donegal Church.

More than 2,000 books from the personal collection of Wallace and Bruce Clark (pictured above) will be on offer at the sale in the Wee Hall in Culdaff this Saturday, August 10th.

The books are both modern and ancient – and cover a broad range of genres including: history, fiction, travel, biography, religion, and folklore.

Bruce Clark is an award-winning author, who has also worked as a journalist with The Economist specialising in Religion and Defence.

His father Wallace was an author, businessman and adventurer.

Their private collection is being generously donated to support essential maintenance work on St Buadan’s Church in Culdaff.

According to local historian Sean Beattie: “This collection is likely to contain many treasures on a variety of topics. Both men were passionate about books and their taste was both wide-ranging and erudite.”

Wallace Clark was a cousin of the Young family of Culdaff House.

The book sale starts at 3pm on Saturday in the Wee Hall, Culdaff.

Finn Valley’s Mark English has run an amazing race to qualify for the semi-finals of the Olympic Games 800 metres in Paris.

The Letterkenny man came in second in his heat to the highly rated Gabriel Tual in a time of 1:45.15.

Tual, the fifth fastest 800m runner of all time, was just ahead of English in a time of 1:45.13.

Dublin-based doctor English went out strong form the start and stayed in third place for most of the race before a late surge in the last 100 metres saw him take second place in the race.

The semi-final will be a step up once again for English but his heat showing has already impressed many at Paris.
