The band were in town to play at the Letterkenny Sessions.

But before they took to the stage they popped into see Mark Doherty and staff and chat to fans.

Cinema owner Mark Doherty thanked the lads and said their self-titled film is doing really well at his complex.

He said  “The lads were sound and it was very decent of them to pop along to see us before they played their gig.

“I’ve watched the film and although I don’t have great Irish, it’s a brilliant film and hopefully it will stay here until the end of the month.”

A fallen sailor from Donegal is being remembered after the lost wreck of WW1 warship was discovered off the Aberdeenshire coast.

The wreck, believed to be the HMS Hawke, was discovered by a team of divers about 70 miles east of Fraserburgh earlier this week in “remarkable” condition after 110 years. It was found on Monday by the Lost in Waters Deep group, 360ft (110m) below the surface.

The Royal Navy warship was torpedoed by a German U-boat on 15th October 1914, just three months after war was declared. The ship caught fire and exploded, causing it to sink in just eight minutes.

More than 500 crew members perished, with only 70 sailors surviving.

Among those onboard was Hugh McGinley from Inch in Inishowen, aged 27.

The Donegal County Museum reports that McGinley was a Stoker 1st Class, SS /105931.

He was the son of John and Mary Ann McGinley (nee Gallagher), Castlequarter, Inch Island. Royal Navy, H.M.S. “Hawke” He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent.

The Royal Navy is expected to formally identify the wreckage in the coming weeks.

Council ‘has no objections’ to charity sales on The Diamond

Donegal County Council is standing firm on a new parking ban on the Diamond in Donegal Town ahead of a protest tomorrow.

The protest, spearheaded by charity fundraiser Billy Bustard, seeks to overturn a new parking ban on the renovated Diamond public space. Mr Bustard was fined last Saturday for parking his van in the pedestrianised area as he promoted his latest fundraiser for the Donegal-Galway Cancer Bus.

In a statement today, the council clarified that it is not against charity sales. The council also reiterated its call on the public to continue to observe the new pedestrianisation.

“There has in recent days been some commentary on various media that the Council are preventing the use of the Diamond, Donegal Town for activities such as charity sales,” a spokesperson said.

“The Council wish to clarify that it has no such objections to these types of activities taking place here.

“The Council wishes to reiterate that its concern revolves around the periodic use of the Diamond as a parking area for any form of vehicle including their use associated with other activities taking place there, including charity activities.  We would again ask that, for all of the reasons already provided by the Council, that everyone respect this request to ensure that the area can be enjoyed and accessed by all.”

Donegal County Council has asked for cooperation from all users of the Diamond in relation to ensuring the space is designated for pedestrian users and is free from vehicles, so as to ensure the following:

  • The Diamond is a safe and welcoming space where community events can be held all year round.
  • Avoid cracks to paving due to vehicles parking on the Diamond.
  • Avoid the potential of pedestrians tripping and falling on the cracked paving.
  • Avoid public money being spent on trip and fall claims that could easily be avoided if the paving was not damaged.
  • Negate the Health & Safety issues associated with vehicles interacting with pedestrians in a designated public realm space, e.g.
    • Vehicles moving around in a designated pedestrian area.
    • Potential for kids touching hot exhausts.
    • Potential for kids climbing on bikes and bikes falling over.
  • To encourage a free flow of pedestrian users especially those with mobility impairments.
  • To ensure everyone can enjoy the Diamond, avoid other users feeling uncomfortable or intimidated when they see motorbikes on the Diamond.
  • Avoid oil from vehicles staining the new paving.
  • Avoid tyre tracks on the new paving.
  • Avoid damage to kerbs due to vehicles mounting them.
  • Avoid street furniture being hit and damaged by vehicles.
  • Ensuring that access through the public realm space is not being impeded by vehicles.

Ambitious Donegal entrepreneurs receive awards at ALPHA Startup Bootcamp Showcase Day

Twenty-one courageous business founders from across Donegal have completed the ALPHA Innovation Startup Bootcamp, pitching their propositions to an intimate audience of ecosystem stakeholders: industry representatives, peers, and support organisations.

The programme, now in its second year, welcomes applications from budding entrepreneurs from right across the county, who are passionate about solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Throughout May, June & July, the class of 2024 worked on fourteen propositions during seven workshops.

They learned tools and techniques such as Problem Framing, Customer Development Interviewing Skills, Market Sizing, Pricing Models …and much more.

The workshops took place every Saturday morning in the CoLab facility, where the founders tackled challenges which ranged from improving patient outcomes in epilepsy monitoring units where data is frequently lost costing specialist units vast sums; helping physiotherapists better deal with clients suffering from persistent neck pain who do not always follow their exercises.

The solution in this case is based on a novel use of virtual reality technology; and helping health-conscious people to meet their nutrition goals through real food, high-quality protein options.

Since launching in 2022, ALPHA Innovation has been offering advice, support and practical know-how. Entrepreneurs, whether seasoned or first-time, often first engage by booking into their weekly Coaching Clinics or attending one of their know-how workshops.

Keith Carron & Aws Al-Adhami pitching their proposition, Plend at the Startup Bootcamp Showcase

Spearheading ALPHA is the Head of Innovation, Kevin Sexton. Speaking on the conclusion of Startup Bootcamp, he said “I am delighted to see how far our pre-founders have progressed over the past 8 weeks. During that time, many of our teams have pivoted to target larger market opportunities. They completed the programme having collectively spoken to over 100 potential customers and gained skills that will stand to them on their journey to securing pilot customers over the coming weeks and months.”

Aws Al-Adhami, who travelled from Dublin each week to attend Bootcamp recalled what he enjoyed most about the programme:

“It was well worth the trip from Dublin”, he said. “The whole group was really invested in one another’s ideas and it was great to learn from other founders who are at a similar stage of the startup journey as I was. The icing on the cake for me was being paired up with a co-founder who I had never met before. We were well-matched by ALPHA. It meant our team had a compelling skillset across startups, fintech, and social enterprises which helped me rapidly develop the value proposition further.“

ALPHA Innovation is supported through a Donegal County Council-led economic development initiative and delivered through Donegal 2040 DAC, a company set up specifically to deal with various economic development challenges in the County.

These include town centre regeneration, driven by specific capital investments in buildings, marketing and management of such facilities to support employment creation across a range of towns, and through ALPHA Innovation, which is on a mission to drive innovation in established organisations, and accelerate startups from the region to position themselves as global players.

Eilish Kennedy receiving feedback following her presentation from Bootcamp mentor and facilitator Graham Merriman

Leas-Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Jimmy Kavanagh, represented the Council at Tuesday’s showcase. Speaking on the success of this year’s programme, Jimmy said “The Council recognises the importance of driving innovation capability across Donegal and ALPHA’s initiatives are doing just that. It was wonderful to see how far the pre-founders have come in such a short space of time, I was really impressed!“

Chair of the Board for Donegal 2040, Mícheál Ó hÉanaigh said: “The completion of the very successful Bootcamp has further underlined the key role of Alpha as a resource for the North West region. Alpha and its activities are a core element of the Donegal 2040 initiative.

“The just completed Bootcamp has further developed the Alpha ‘community’, with successful participants joining the ALPHAalumni: a mutual support platform based on principles of learning, entrepreneurship, innovation, inclusion and diversity. Alpha aspires to these principles which align with the value behind the saying ‘ní neart go cur le chéile’ (many hands make light work).“

Kevin Sexton concluded, “Last year our goal was to have a good gender balance, and we achieved 73% female participation. This year we deliberately set out to represent modern society as it really is: a multicultural mix, of young and more mature, and keep a good balance of genders. We welcomed 22 individuals from 9 nationalities; we had a participant who retired and is going again; PdD and Masters students who have been in industry previously and are upskilling or diving deep into an area of specialisation ..so we certainly achieved our goals.

“The group worked brilliantly with one another and are all committed to meeting again regularly to continue sharing knowledge, support, and tech skills. We have over twenty individuals now who will champion this way of starting businesses. We also doubled our intake to Bootcamp and fair play to the team for being up for the challenge which was quite demanding at times.”

ALPHA Innovation will now turn their attention to their second edition of Disrupt By The Sea, a Dragon’s Den-style event, where US investors hear pitches from 6 Irish scaleups in front of a live audience, with $100,000 cash investment on the table assuming the winner can agree on equity terms.

Scaleups from across Ireland are encouraged to apply – at www.ALPHAInnovation.eu/disrupt – before applications close on Sunday 25 August.

Donegal man who stalked and threatened ex-girlfriend to be deported from Australia

A Donegal man who stalked and threatened his ex-girlfriend is to be deported from Australia after serving two years in jail.

Gavin Porter from Buncrana had been dating mum-of-three Tash Kramer last year but started to show signs of threatening behaviour three months into the relationship when he became jealous and possessive.

She said he would then “beg for forgiveness” and the cycle would repeat itself.

Porter would drive past Kramer’s house in Benalla, north-east of Melbourne, and persistently call her.

He also sent her messages threatening to “cut your throat” and “make your life hell”.

“He would get drunk and just start calling me names – Calling me fat, calling me ugly, telling me to kill myself and then have no recollection the next day,” Kramer told Ally Langdon on Australian news programme A Current Affair this week.

Kramer said Porter’s controlling behaviour eventually turned violent, detailing how he punched her in the hip and choked her on the ground after she grabbed her phone on one occasion.

“I would always do what he asked me to do, go where he wanted me to go, just to keep the peace,” she said.

“I tried many times to end the relationship, but he wouldn’t have it, I was a possession to him”.

Porter also threatened Kramer over an intimate video he recorded without her consent, which she said he then posted on his Snapchat story.

He told her: “I really am going to forward that video if you don’t talk to me. I advise you strongly to contact me in the next 10 minutes, before your father and everyone sees (the) videos”.

The Donegal man was later arrested and interrogated by Detective Senior Constable Kim Sneddon in a recorded police interview.

“When I compiled the brief of evidence and had a look there were over 3,000 text messages alone,” Sneddon said.

Police put an interim family violence intervention order in place seven months after they began their relationship.

The temporary restraining order protects applicants from violence, threats or abuse from a family member (or former family member).

Kramer said Porter feared the court order would result in him losing his visa and, after trying to end their relationship, she received a birthday card from him reading: “Can’t wait until we are back together again… PS – How’s your windpipe?”.

“We were in the back of the car and choked me with his fingers… It was a bit of a running joke with him.

“He said something along the lines of if he can’t have me, nobody else will”.

Kramer agreed to have the family violence intervention order put in place for a year.

“Within a minute of me agreeing to the order, my phone started ringing and Gavin was making threats to come to my work,” she explained.

“I just felt like I couldn’t protect my kids anymore and thought I’d be better if I wasn’t around, so I drove to the train tracks.”

Senior Constable Zach Clark said he spent “probably an hour” looking for Kramer until police found her in bushes beside the train line.

“We took her back to the police station and tried to calm her down and get a story from her”.

But Porter did not leave Kramer alone and instead arrived at her house, waking her up by tapping on her window as her children slept.

Kramer said she grabbed a knife from her kitchen and locked the children inside the house before running outside to keep him away from her kids.

“Thankfully, I live pretty close to the police station and they got there pretty quickly, but unfortunately couldn’t catch him,” she told A Current Affair.

Porter was arrested at a hotel in Melbourne’s central business district last November after flying from Western Australia back to Victoria.

He was sentenced to two years in prison and will be deported after serving his sentence.

A magistrate described the case as one of the worst family violence cases they’ve ever heard in a courtroom.

Meanwhile, Kramer has moved out of Benalla and is urging people who find themselves in similar situations to go to the police.

“I resisted for such a long time and made things much harder for myself, they’re there to help,” she said.

Drumbar Utd are U16 Girls league champs

Drumbar United clinched their second U16 league in a row with a hard fought victory in Milford.

Drumbar took an early lead when an excellent delivery from a corner wasn’t cleared and Sarah Colhoun was quickest to react to tap home.

Despite the early setback Milford grew into the match but found it hard to get past Nicola Happi in the Drumbar goal.

Milford attacked from the off in the second half and Ria Hardiman equalised with a well taken goal from 20 yards.

Chloe Blaney put Milford in front with a speculative free kick on sixty minutes but Drumbar came back strongly and equalised through Michaela Hannafin on seventy minutes. Drumbar were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Sarah Colhoun stepped up and scored a piledriver with four minutes left on the clock.

Milford threw everything they had to try and equalise but couldn’t find a way with only minutes left. An absolute cracker of a game and congratulations to Drumbar on winning the league.

Drumbar United’s second title in a row continues the soccer tradition in the area and is a testament to the hard work done by the coaches and other volunteers at the club.

There will be a medal ceremony on Wednesday after their match against Ballyraine at Orchard Grove, Letterkenny which has a 6.30pm kick off.

Heartwarming moment as Twin Towns defibrilators installed

Four new community defibrilators have been installed in the Twin Towns.

It’s after the fundraising efforts of local paramedic Aiden Thompson, who set up a fundraising campaign in recent months to purchase the lifesaving equipment to be installed across Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

After smashing his initial goal of €6,000, the local community ended up raising over twice that figure, with the final number standing at over €13,300.

That means the defib machines can now be placed widely across the twin towns and their surrounding areas, with the first four being installed this week.

Aiden was there to oversee their installation at Kelly’s bottling store, Drumboe, the B&S Credit Union, the Roadhouse Bar, Cappry and at the Supervalu/NK Pharmacy.

Donegal children waiting over a year for mental health support “unacceptable”– Doherty

Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty has described the long waiting list times for children to access mental health supports in Donegal as “totally unacceptable”.

The Sinn Fein TD made those remarks in the Dail yesterday, as his party launched a new mental health action plan.

Deputy Doherty says his party’s plan would help transform the system, and help people get access to crucial mental health supports such as counselling quicker.

“Mental health care is a major issue in Donegal. My office has been contacted this year by parents who have told me that their children are waiting over a year on the CAMHS waiting list. Over a year to see a councillor. This is totally unacceptable,” Deputy Doherty said.

“Sinn Féin’s Mental Health Action Plan would transform how we deliver mental health services in Donegal and across the state. It sets out our absolute commitment to delivering widespread and significant change and a fresh start in mental health care.”

“We have engaged in comprehensive engagements with mental health stakeholders from right across the HSE, community and voluntary sector, international experts and with people with lived experience to produce this policy.”

“Sinn Féin will deliver a fully linked up 24-hour service and new investments in key services. We will deliver mental health care at a local level with universal counselling access, statewide access to Jigsaw, and key links to local GPs.”

“CAMHS will be replaced with a new Child and Youth Mental Health Service. The upper age for access to these services will increase from 18 to 25, ending the cliff-edge faced by many young adults when they reach the age of 18.”

“We would plan for and fully fund 20 additional eating disorder beds and community services, implement joint care plans between addiction and mental health services to support people who have a dual diagnosis and re-open Keltoi, the residential dual diagnosis facility closed since 2020.”

“Sinn Féin would ensure there were fully staffed emergency mental health services and regional crisis response teams. This would be achieved by multi-annual funding, strategic workforce planning, linking and integrating mental health care provision and a new Mental Health Care Act rooted in patient safety and care.”

“I know the importance of people getting the right mental health care, in the right place and at the right time. Where you live and ability to pay should not be a barrier to accessing mental health services.”

“Sinn Féin’s plan is based on fairness, access to high quality local services, early intervention, prevention, and suicide reduction. We would ensure that mental health is seen as an all-of-government priority.”

“The big difference between our plan and the approach of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is that we will move away from decades of crisis management and underinvestment to community-based, proactive care. This would be backed up by multi-annual funding, long-term planning, and workforce planning.”

“Investment in mental health and wellbeing is a no-brainer. The social and economic benefits of a healthy and happy society are numerous. The impact on young people’s development, and our own growth as we age, cannot be overstated. It is crucial that we get this right.”

The historic cottage after which the well-known McGrory’s Brae is named has gone up for sale.

The beautiful traditional cottage is the home of the McGrory family, and is located outside of Ballybofey.

McGrory’s Brae, on the Ballybofey to Donegal Town main road, is located just to the north of the property’s 16.8 acres of farmland that are also up for sale with the cottage.

The cottage features three bedrooms, with oil-fired central heating. There are also a number of traditional farm outbuildings on the property for use, including a livestock handling yard and cattle crush.

Meanwhile the 16.8 acres of land consists of open meadows, and there is a roadway that runs centrally through the farm to allow good access to the fields.

The guide price for the property is currently set at €210,000.

The property is being sold by Henry Kee and Son, who in the listing are recommending early inspection of the property for anyone interested, as “early news of this unique property coming to the market is already generating lots of interest.”
