Main pic: Mickey McMahon (L) and JC Bonar in rehearsal for new Butt Drama Circle production, ‘A Matter of Rights.’

An original new play on a very topical and contentious issue is set to thrill drama lovers at the Balor Theatre next week.

Rehearsals are at an advanced stage for the award-winning Butt Drama Circle’s (BDC) production, ‘A Matter of Rights’.

The play features two award-winning BDC actors, JC Bonar and Mickey McMahon, both of whom enjoyed enormous success on the All-Ireland Drama Festival Circuit in recent years.

In this intense thriller, Bonar plays ‘Da’, who doesn’t like immigrants’. He has just served three months in prison for causing a breach of the peace while protesting outside a hostel earmarked for Asylum Seekers. McMahon plays his son, who doesn’t agree with his father’s views.

Now that ‘Da’ is back home, he is determined to have it out with his father, once and for all. This intense and powerful two-hander plays out against the backdrop of a fractured family and the fractured society that is modern Ireland.

‘A Matter of Rights’ was penned by Conor Malone.

The talented Malone was also the author of BDC’s ‘The Root of all Evil’, which reached the final last year of the prestigious All Ireland One Act Drama Festival.

The 2024 drama festival entry, ‘A Matter of Rights’, will be directed by Shaun Laverty, who also steered last year’s production to huge acclaim.

‘A Matter of Rights’ debuts on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th of October as part of a double bill at the Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey. It will feature alongside the Balor DCA’s production of  ‘TheWife, Her Cat and All The Other Stuff’, directed by Kieran Quinn and starring Andy McGranaghan.

This is set to be a very special evening of theatre indeed – curtains open for the first show at 8pm.

Tickets are available now from the Balor Box Office on 074 -9131840.

Harps good value for draw with Bray but play-off hopes fade further

Despite taking the lead twice Harps were held to a 2-2 draw by play-off rivals Bray Wanderers, a result that along with wins for Athlone Town and Wexford Youths more or less ends their play-off hopes.

They now need to win their last two games , both at home, Wexford Youths on Monday and Treaty Utd next Friday and hope Bray Wanderers lose in Cobh.

Bray Wanderers…2 Finn Harps …2

But even that may not be enough as the Seasiders have a much superior goal difference, +11 at the moment.

Finn Harps went into this meeting with Bray Wanderers knowing that defeat would probably end their play-off chances but with two home games to come next week to finish their season, a victory would keep those hopes alive.

Bray Wanderers had the better of the earlier stages and Harps keeper Oisín Cooney had to be alert, making several good saves to deny the home team an early lead.

That pattern continued as the home side dominated , Cooney did his job of keeping them out and Harps were finding it difficult to threaten in attack.

Then in the 36th minute and totally against the run of play Harps took the lead , Sean Patton sliding a super pass to match Tony McNamee’s perfectly timed run and the Harps captain gave keeper Corcoran no chance with an excellent finish, 0-1 to Harps.

Both ‘keepers made good saves in the minutes before half-time and Harps led at the break.

Unfortunately that didn’t last too long as Bray equalised two minutes into the second-half, Cristian Magerusan setting up Guillermo Penalver who scored, despite a great effort again by Cooney.

The home team pushed on looking for a lead goal and Cooney denied Magerusan on the hour with another fine save.

Harps survived a few anxious moments and regained the lead in the 73rd minute, Success Edogun was fouled by Zach Nolan and the Harps man blasted the resulting penalty into the net, 1-2 to Harps and an important final quarter to come.

But once again the lead didn’t last long , two minutes later former Killian Cantwell burst forward and found Shane Griffin who hammered a super drive past Cooney into the roof of the net, 2-2 and that’s how it ended.

Finn Harps ; Oisín Cooney, Jamie Watson, Matty Makins, Noe Baba , Patrick Ferry , Max Hutchinson, Tony McNamee , Ryan Rainey (Gavin McAteer 78mins), Sean Patton , Success Edogun ( Max Johnston 88mins), Luke O Brien.

HSE criticised after Letterkenny respite services cancelled due to staff shortage

Letterkenny councillors have called for an urgent meeting with the HSE to address recent staffing issues at the respite house in Ballymacool, Letterkenny.

It comes as two families had bookings cancelled last month because there was not a safe staffing level to care for their loved ones.

The Ballymacool Respite House is currently facing a shortage of nursing and healthcare assistant staff following three resignations and one staff member taking a career break.

The HSE has apologised following the cancellations on the 20th and 21st of September and announced that, as of Wednesday 9th October, three vacant nursing positions have been accepted by candidates.

The disruption was raised at a meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District on Tuesday.

Independent Councillor Michael McBride moved an emergency motion on the matter, and called on the office of the Mayor, Cllr Gerry McMonagle, to seek a meeting with the HSE.

Cllr McBride said the HSE should have been prepared for the recent retirement of two staff members. A nurse also decided to emigrate after being unable to secure a full-time contract with the HSE, the council heard.

Cllr McBride said: “It was brought to my attention there were families with bookings. They got a call to say ‘sorry we don’t have any staff and the centre is closed’.”

Cllr McBride pointed out the vital need for respite for families who are caring for loved ones with complex disabilities.

These families need a few days every three or four months to recharge their batteries,” he said.

Cllr McBride added that the lifting of the recruitment embargo in the HSE is “pure lip service” as the Ballymacool House situation shows that issues remain on the ground.

“It’s probably an unusual request to ask the Mayor to speak to the HSE, but this is not acceptable, we need to put as much pressure on the HSE as much as we can,” Cllr McBride said.

Cllr McMonagle agreed that engagement with the HSE was a priority.

The motion was signed by all councillors of the Letterkenny and Milford MD.

The HSE has confirmed to Donegal Daily that the three candidates for the nursing positions are currently going through the required clearances such as Garda vetting, reference checks, Occupational Health assessments before appointment.

“The vacant Health Care Assistant position awaits Human Resources approval to recruit,” a spokesperson said.

On the reduction of staff complement, they said: “Disability Services have tried to ensure service continuity at Ballymacool House through the use of contingency measures – agency staff being utilised and overtime being offered to existing staff. However, respite services at Ballymacool Respite House were cancelled on one occasion this year – Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of September. The reason for the cancellation of respite on these dates was due to the inability to provide a safe level of staffing. Disability Services were unable to secure sufficient replacement staff from agencies or via uptake of overtime.

“Two individuals from two different families were booked for respite in Ballymacool Respite House on the relevant dates of 20th and 21st September. These individuals and their families were notified of the decision to cancel respite on these dates two weeks earlier. A peer group of three people had been identified by the service for the other three places on the relevant dates but their respite places had not been confirmed prior to the cancellation decision as the service was aware that it would have difficulty achieving a safe staffing level on the dates.

“The HSE regrets very much the need to curtail services at any time and apologies to those individuals and their families who were impacted by the cancellation of respite services at Ballymacool House on the 20th and 21st September.”

Ballymacool Respite House is registered with the Health Information and Quality Authority to deliver respite for up to five people with disabilities on any given night. Respite services delivered at Ballymacool Respite House are delivered on alternate weeks to adults and children.

Drunk driver attempted to climb into GAA grounds while fleeing gardaí

A young Carrigart man tried to climb a fence into a GAA ground in an attempt to flee gardai has been handed a three-year driving ban.

Matthew Shields was put off the road following his appearance at Letterkenny District Court.

Shields, a 23-year-old of Main Street, Carrigart, was more than four times the legal limit when he provided a sample after being arrested and taken to Milford Garda Station.

Shields drew the attention of gardai when he failed to turn off his headlight beams as he approached a garda car coming in the opposite direction. Gardai, who flashed the lights to Shields in a signal to dim his headlights, were forced to nearly slow to a halt.

Gardai turned and followed Shields’ white Kia Ceed. The court heard that Shields, who was not insured, took off at speed, executing the 80km/h limit as he drove into the village of Downings.

Garda evidence said that Shields pulled into the back of a hotel before exiting the car and running around the building. There, he attempted to climb a wire fence into the adjacent Downings GAA pitch, but was unable to do so.

Shields was apprehended and officers found a key which he had dropped beside him during his attempt to evade capture. Shields’ eyes were glazed, his speech was slurred and gardai detected a smell of intoxicating liquor when they caught up with the defendant.

Shields, who has no previous convictions, was handcuffed at 2.16am and taken to Milford Garda Station. After he was unable to provide a breath sample, he subsequently gave a specimen of urine which showed a concentration of 284 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine.

Gardai agreed with Mr Frank Dorrian, solicitor for Shields, that the accused man was “very compliant” following his arrest.

Mr Dorrian highlighted mistakes on dates of the certificate of postage and the cert relating to the urine test.

“We are clearly looking at different events – that disclosed was for a different date,” Mr Dorrian said.

“One way or another these are self-proving statutory documents, the documents are real evidence and real evidence is used as a grounding for prosecution and a basis for prosecution. Is this an acceptable standard for the prosecution of a criminal matter where dates are wrong in two fundamental ways and how is one to know what the sample refers to?”

In response, Inspector Tony Byrne said this amounted to a typographical error.

Judge Ciaran Liddy said he was satisfied that it was a typo and there was no prejudice flowing from this based on the totality of the evidence he had heard.

Shields had, therefore, a case to answer, said Judge Lindy.

Mr Dorrian said his client works for a solar panel company and his employment involves the necessity to drive. As a result, he sought a postponement of any disqualification the court might impose.

Judge Liddy disqualified Shields from driving for a period of three years from February 1, 2025. Shields was fined €250 and given three months to pay. He was also fined €150 for driving without insurance.

“Irish people overseas continue to make vital contributions to their communities and on the international stage. I am always very honoured when I get to see first-hand the impact they make locally and globally,” Mr Martin said.

Letterkenny Councillor Tómas Seán Devine has called for a meeting with the manager of Letterkenny University Hospital following his own ‘shocking’ experience.

Cllr Devine is recovering from a recent health battle which saw him lose power in his legs.

The 100% Redress Party representative spent eight weeks in Letterkenny University Hospital this summer.

While he credits the staff as amazing, he said that something must be done to support the recruitment crisis.

“What I saw first-hand in there was shocking,” Cllr Devine told a meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

“The staff in that hospital are amazing, from the porters right through to the doctors, the problem is that we haven’t got enough of them.

“Enough is enough, we need to do something.”

Cllr Devine told the council that the hospital is “in turmoil” with pensioners being left to wait on trolleys and wheelchairs for up to 48 hours.

His motion, which was passed, called for a meeting with Hospital Manager Seán Murphy.

Seconding the motion, Independent Councillor Declan Meehan said that the staffing shortage is not just a patient safety concern, but an issue that must be addressed to protect the wellbeing of the ‘excellent’ existing staff.

“We need to understand the issues and try and map a way forward,” Cllr Meehan said.

Derry driver Callum Devine has claimed victory at the 2024 Donegal Harvest Stages Rally.

It marks a Donegal double for Devine, as he followed up his victory at the Donegal International Rally earlier in the year with another superb performance today.

Devine and co-driver Noel O’Sullivan took their Skoda Rally 2 car to the win by a total of 12.4 seconds, over the second-placed crew of Josh Moffett and Kieth Moriarty and their Hyundai i20 R5.

The final spot on the podium was shared as after over 49 minutes of racing, both Michael Boyle and Desi Henry finished with the exact same time to the tenth of a second – both completing the day’s stages in 49:54.9.

Elsewhere, Kevin Gallagher stormed to victory in the Modified section of the rally, driving a Darrian.
