Buncrana residents to hold public meeting on defective block crisis

Residents of a Buncrana estate dealing with the defective block crisis are to hold a public meeting next week.

The meeting will be held on Monday, March 10, at Elm Park.

Residents there also face a flooding threat, leading potentially to homelessness and emotional distress, according to Deputy Charles Ward.

Deputy Ward said the situation at Elm Park has reached a ‘critical point’, significantly affecting residents and public finances.

“Current government strategies risk worsening financial and emotional strains while residents seek to rebuild their lives,” he said.

“To avoid placing an undue burden on taxpayers, the Office of Public Works (OPW), the Department of Finance, and the Housing Authority must send representatives to meet with residents on the 10th March to devise a sustainable solution. A coordinated approach will help restore confidence among Elm Park residents and the broader community.”

Deputy Ward said residents also lack flood insurance. He said the delay in flood protection, with homeowners waiting 6-7 years, exacerbates their plight.

“Relocation offers a sensible and cost effective alternative, avoiding the estimated €4.3 million cost of demolishing and rebuilding homes in a flood prone area,” he added.

“This solution provides residents with a fresh start and prevents future crises.”

Deputy ward called on the Department of Housing, OPW, and Donegal County Council to collaborate for a fair resolution.

“We elected representatives must advocate for swift action to prevent further devastation for these families,” he said.

“The government has a chance to act responsibly. We call on officials to prioritise people over bureaucracy. Immediate action is essential; waiting years for flood defenses is not an option when a viable solution exists to protect lives and save public funds. Timely action can safeguard our communities and the public purse.”

Gallery: Red carpet rolls out for Magh Ene TY Young Filmmaker Awards

Los Angeles may have just staged the Oscars but for locals, the real glamourous film event was in Bundoran last week.

Eclipse Cinemas Bundoran were delighted to host the inaugural Magh Ene TY Young Filmmaker Awards on Thursday 27th of February.

The initiative was the brainchild of TY Coordinator Mr John Reilly and Collie Mac Pháidín from Eclipse Cinemas.

Mr Reily tasked his young students with making their own short films based on their SPHE syllabus.

The talented young pupils wrote, acted, directed and edited the films themselves, all under the stewardship of Mr Reilly of course, who also had a starring role in more than one of the films.

Mr Reilly and his co-presenter Zara

The films covered themes such as bullying, peer pressure, body positivity and the importance of friendship – and they showed how cine-literate they were with films in a number of genres including silent movies, thrillers, an improvised unscripted drama and even a Tarintino-esque gangster caper featuring a cameo from the Ballyshannon Gardaí.

The students threw themselves into the project showing a passion and dedication that would put Spielberg to shame, even if like their illustrious Hollywood counterparts there were a few reshoots and missed deadlines.

Once completed, they were sent off to Eclipse Cinemas to convert them for the silver screen in time for the big premiere.

Eclipse Directors Daniel Barrett, John O Connell and Martin Barrett were delighted to be able to give back something to the local community that has supported them through thick and thin and donated their biggest screen and cinema facilities free of charge so the students could bring their families to see their films on the big screen.

Cinema Owners Daniel & Martin Barrett

The cinema staff and students decorated the cinema for the occasion laying out the red carpet and providing drinks and snacks for all the guests and Aideen from Marketsquare Balloons donated a ballon arch to make the lobby even more spectacular.

But it wasn’t just the cinema that was glammed up. The dress code was “fabulous”, and both boys and girls were dressed up to the nines.

Daryna Shevchecko, one of the cinema staff was on hand to take photos of all the glamourous stars and their families to have a momento of their big night.

The effort was well worth it as over 200 students and their families showed up to fill screen 1. There was a real sense of occasion in the air with excited students and parents both bursting with pride and nervous anticipation.

They were so proud of the work that the young people had put in, but they hadn’t seen any of the movies. But what if they were rubbish?

Fortunately, there was no need to worry there.

In fact, such was the quality that the judges all had different films in their top 3.

The panel was headed by award winning writer, actor and filmmaker Caroline Harvey Caroline, whose films have played film festivals all over Europe was astounded by the depth of talent on show. “I wish I had an opportunity to take part in an event like this when I was a student,” said Caroline “They already have a grasp on storytelling and editing that shows a real flair for film making.”

She even said she had taken a few notes on who she might approach for her next movie so watch this space.

Collie Mac Pháidín & Caroline Harvey with the winning film makers for High Stakes at the Magh Ene Oscars

I hope they remember us when they get to Hollywood.

However there had to be some winners and after some heated debate among the judges, the winners were revealed.

Best Dressed: Michalina Florek, Riley Loughlin.

Best Score: Kaya Kerins for the film Automobile

Best Editing: Annie Warnock and Wiktoria Kowaleczko for the film Rewind

Best Script: Michalina Florek, Aoibhe Halpin, Anastasiia Starodobets for the film Stalker

Best Actors: Kelvin Duffy in the film A Stolen Life, Zara McLaughlin for the films Stalker and Rewind

Best Picture: Owen Dowdican, Bruno Versilo, Samir Mohammed, Oskar Wochnik, Rory Rooney and Wiktor Szulmanski for the film High Stakes.

Eclipse Cinemas’ Collie Mac Pháidín said “It’s been a great couple of months for cinemas with the success of Wicked, Moana and Bridget Jones but nothing has given us more pleasure than being able to do this for our local community” And  he added with a wink “ hearing them say , ‘wow it looks so different on the big screen instead of my phone’ is very pleasing to all of us who love cinema.”

Collie and Mr Reilly plan on making this an annual event and would like to open it up to other local schools too. The technology on your average phone has creative possibilities that the movie makers of the past could only have dreamt of.

“We may be the forgotten county when it comes to infrastructure,” said Collie “but with regards to talent and creativity, the northwest is bursting with potential. The young people, like the rest of us, just need a little bit of support to unlock it.”

Donegal dance director Breandán De Gallaí has created a new documentary on the conflict of life after losing a loved one.

Breandán, a native of Gweedore, lost his partner of 16 years in 2021.

Declan English of Ranelagh, and formerly of Westmeath, was the love of Breandán’s life.

Losing Declan, and the grieving process that followed, has inspired Breandán to create the documentary Misneach – Cumha which will air on TG4 on Wednesday 12th March at 9.30pm.

Breandán and his late partner Declan English.Photo: TG4

Beginning and ending with Breandán’s personal story and experience, this documentary explores both the unique and shared reality for people who have lost their partners or loved ones as Breandán travels all over the country to meet others who have stories to share.

In the Grief Café in Galway, Breandán finds a space where people come to openly grieve together. Thomas Kiely shares the grief journey as he talks to Breandán about the loss of his wife Angela to cancer.

In Dún Chaoin, author Éilís Ní Dhuibhne discusses how the loss of her husband Bo has impacted her work. Breandán meets Dingle Druid, Júli Ní Mhaoileoin, to learn about the work she does with those who are grieving.

Bill Foley welcomes Breandán into the home he shared with his husband Christopher as they discuss their experiences of grieving a same-sex partner.

And in Limerick, artist Katie Verling tells Breandán why she believes we must speak about death more.

Filmed over a protracted period of time, these incredibly vulnerable and honest conversations shed light on possibly the most challenging human experience of all.

Breandán is a former lead dancer with Riverdance and founder of the Ériu contemporary Irish dance company.

A happy ‘tail’ as lost cat Daisy reunited with owner after months apart

A local woman has had a heart-warming reunion with her missing cat after months of searching.

Daisy the curious cat had been missing since November last year but thanks to local charities and her microchip, she is now home safe and sound with her owner Lisa.

ISPCA Donegal Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) was recently contacted by a member of the public in relation to a cat they were concerned about, as they were leaving the area.

The cat was admitted at the ISPCA and checked for injuries. Although the cat appeared to be in reasonably good health, she was very friendly, so likely was someone’s missing pet.

The cat was then scanned for a microchip by ISPCA staff, and it was discovered that her name was Daisy, and it later transpired that she had been missing since November 2024.

ISPCA Head of Animal Welfare, Denise McCausland said: “Thanks to the microchip that was registered correctly, we were able to get in touch with the cat’s owner Lisa, to let her know that we had Daisy, and it was really heart-warming we were able to reunite them.”

Daisy was spayed and microchipped, when she was adopted from our good friends at Animals in Need, but shortly after arriving in her new home, Daisy spotted a small opening in a door and made a break for it. Her owner Lisa was frantic with concern and had almost given up on finding her, after months of searching.

Denise added: “Like all cats they will wander, and this story reiterates the importance of microchipping your pet(s).  It’s important to keep any new cat completely indoors for a minimum of four weeks to give them time to get familiar with their new home, the daily routine, to get to know your voice when you call them. Kittens should be kept indoors until they have fully recovered after their spay or neuter, and until they’re a little older, so they have the sense to keep away from dangers and predators.  We regularly see animals with no microchips or information on their collars and we owe it to them, to keep them safe and free from distress should they manage to escape”.

The ISPCA encourages cat owners to microchip their pet(s) and keep the contact details up to date on the microchipping database to facilitate reuniting lost pets.

Thinking of getting a new cat?  The ISPCA has some beautiful cats that have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, as they are now wait for a safe and secure place to call home. For more information, please visit our website here: https://ispca.ie/adoptions/?animal=cat or email rehoming@ispca.ie.

Some elective procedures are being postponed at Letterkenny University Hospital today due to capacity issues.

The Emergency Department is described as “extremely busy” with high numbers of people attending in recent days.

Yesterday saw 124 people attending the ED and the hospital is seeing a similar number today. There are currently 74 patients in the Emergency Department with 10 patients waiting to be admitted.

“Due to the pressures on the site and the lack of bed capacity, the hospital is postponing some elective procedures. Urgent, time sensitive cases are being prioritised. Patients are being contacted directly if their procedure is being postponed,” a spokesperson said.

The hospital is advising that patients who attend ED for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times.

“All available beds in the hospital are in use. Patients are facing long waiting times to be admitted from the Emergency Department to a bed on a ward. Every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity,” the statement said.

“As always, people who do require emergency care are encouraged to attend EDs where they will be prioritised.

“The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

“The hospital is committed to treating everyone who presents at the Emergency Department; people who are seriously injured or ill are assessed and treated as a priority and those who do not require urgent care may be waiting longer.

“We continue to request that people only attend the Emergency Department at the hospital if it is an emergency situation. We ask that people attend their GP or out of hours service in the first instance if at all possible.”

All visitors to the hospital will be required to practice good hand hygiene and use hand gel regularly, face masks are available for use throughout the hospital.

People should check the HSE website for useful advice on common illnesses such as colds, coughs, flu, earache and sore throats and keeping well.

Highland Radio CEO and Breast Cancer Survivor, Fionnuala Rabbitt is calling on the Donegal community to go all in against cancer for the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day, which takes place on Friday, 28 March.

Fionnuala was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 52 in 2023 following a routine BreastCheck appointment. The long-time CEO of Highland Radio, originally from Galway, now living in Letterkenny is urging the local Donegal community to turn the county yellow for Daffodil Day 2025.

Reflecting on her cancer experience, Fionnuala said: “I was very fortunate to have caught my breast cancer when I did. I was in total shock and nothing ever prepares you to be told ‘you have cancer’. I had the brilliant support of my family and friends to help me through but the Irish Cancer Society website was there when I needed to get trusted and reliable information on what to expect going through my treatment.

“Every euro raised on Daffodil Day is crucial and makes a real lasting difference to patients and families like mine, fuelling life changing cancer research and vital support services. I would encourage everyone across Donegal to please get out there on Daffodil Day, March 28th, and show your support for those affected by cancer in your local community.”

The Irish Cancer Society is there to ensure that every person affected by cancer has a place to turn to, the support they need and the hope that there will come a day when no one in Ireland dies from cancer.

Thanks to the amazing generosity of the Irish public the Irish Cancer Society invests in ground-breaking cancer research and delivers crucial free support services for people affected by cancer, throughout Donegal. In 2024, your generous support provided:

  • 700 free lifts to bring Donegal-based cancer patients to their treatment
  • Over 110 free counselling sessions to people living in Donegal
  • Over 100 nights of free Night Nursing care to allow cancer patients in Donegal to die at home surrounded by loved ones
  • Our Cancer Nurses had over 1,200 conversations with people from Donegal on our Support Line and in our Daffodil Centres

Irish Cancer Society CEO Averil Power said: “One in two of us will hear the words ‘You’ve got cancer’ in our lifetimes. There isn’t a family in Ireland that hasn’t felt the impact of a cancer diagnosis. We have to raise over €25 million every year to fund all of our essential, free services and life changing cancer research. And we cannot do this without you. Demand for some of our key services is increasing each year, so we need this year’s Daffodil Day to be the biggest yet to ensure we can continue to be there for those who need us most.

“Your generosity on March 28th means patients and their families have free supports like Counselling, Transport to treatment and Night Nursing services.   Every year, communities across Donegal show up and paint the town yellow in support of cancer patients and their families. We’re urging you to stand with cancer patients once again, by going all in against cancer and getting involved on Daffodil Day 28 March. Your generous support means everyone affected by cancer in Donegal will have access to the support they need, when they need it most.”

Where the donations go:

  • €30 can help provide transport for a patient to and from their chemotherapy treatment using the Irish Cancer Society’s Transport Service.
  • €50 can help provide vital clinical equipment for an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse.
  • €55 will help pay for the cost of one hour of Night Nursing, providing end of life care to a patient in their own home.
  • €60 will cover the cost of a counselling session to help a person cope with a cancer diagnosis in their life.

Donegal Women’s League makes history as two teams reach national finals

The Donegal Women’s League made history this week with both their U14 and U16 girls’ teams qualifying for the National SFAI Finals.

The highly anticipated Finals Festival will take place in Limerick on Saturday, March 8. Donegal U16s kick-off at 3:30 PM against North Tipperary, followed by the U14 squad (main pic) facing Carlow at 5:00 PM.

The U16s successfully navigated the group stages before securing an impressive semi-final victory over Galway. Despite missing seven key players who have advanced to National League level, the squad has called upon the rising talents of the 2010 team to bolster their ranks.

While the absence of sharpshooter Cliodhna Kelly—who netted five goals in the campaign—will be felt, Donegal will look to last year’s final hero, Michaella Hannifin, to make an impact. Dependable goalkeeper Mary B McGeever remains a pillar of strength, while experienced players Bronagh Gallen, Eva Diver, and Kaycie Gallagher are relishing the challenge.

North Tipperary faces a similar situation, with several players also progressing to the National League. This makes for an evenly matched contest, setting the stage for an exciting battle.

The Donegal U16s girls squad.

Donegal U16 Squad:

Mary B McGeever (Mulroy Academy), Naoise Gillespie (St. Catherine’s FC), Shaelagh Brannigan (Drumbar Utd), Eva Diver (Gweedore Utd), Michaella Hannafin (Drumbar Utd), Bronagh Gallen (Finn Valley Ladies FC), Elianne McFadden (Gweedore Utd), Kaycie Gallagher (Mulroy Academy), Caoimhe Gallagher (Keadue Rovers), Bronagh Hegarty (St. Catherine’s), Aoibhinn Callaghan (Mulroy Academy), Ashling Duffy (Mulroy Academy), Emma McNulty (Drumbar Utd), Aoife McGee (Gweedore Celtic), Sinead McLoughlin (Lagan Harps), Aoise Lenihan (Illistrin FC), Grace McBride (Bonagee Utd), Shauna Doohan (Glenea Utd), Cate Cameron (Kilmacrennan Celtic), Amy McAteer (Mulroy Academy).

Donegal U14: First National Final Appearance

Donegal U14s came heartbreakingly close to topping their group, narrowly missing out on penalties after a 2-2 draw with South Belfast, where Mollie Elliott netted twice.

They showed their class in earlier matches, defeating Inishowen 3-1 (Ava Greer (2), Savanna Keys) and Cavan Monaghan 3-1 (Ava Greer, Tara McDaid, Eadaoin Kennedy).

Their semi-final against a formidable Limerick Desmond side was a tense affair, with Mollie Elliott scoring a late winner to secure a place in the final.

Now preparing to face Carlow, the team has been training relentlessly. While many of the squad have played together for the past three years, this marks their first-ever National Final—a momentous occasion for the players and management alike.

Donegal U14 Squad:

Aisling McGinley (Letterkenny Rovers), Alex Crawford (Drumbar Utd), Amy Lateef (Lagan Harps), Aoife Kilpatrick (Milford Utd), Ava Greer (Milford Utd), Brooke Johnston (Raphoe Town), Caoimhe Sleigh (Finn Valley Ladies FC), Eadaoin Kennedy (Ballyraine FC), Ella Brennan (Illistrin FC), Emily Doogan (Keadue Rovers), Kate McMenamin (Finn Valley Ladies FC), Kaytlin Fay (Kilmacrennan Celtic), Leah Ward (Keadue Rovers), Megan McGinley (Milford Utd), Mollie Elliott (St. Catherine’s FC), Nease Diver (Gweedore Utd), Nuala Doherty (Gweedore Utd), Reah Robinson (Bonagee Utd), Saoirse Deasley (Raphoe Town), Tara McDaid (Bonagee Utd), Teaghan Doherty (Lagan Harps), Ruby Sheridan (Bonagee Utd).

Best of Luck to the Teams!

Huge credit goes to the management teams, with Sinead Kelly and Syria McGeever leading the U16s, and Olivia Sleigh, Brid McGinty, and John Francis Doogan guiding the U14s.

The entire Donegal football community is behind both squads as they aim to bring home national glory. Best of luck to the players and coaches – let’s make history!

Donegal’s Carol Wilson releases heartfelt track on motherhood ahead of International Women’s Day

Donegal singer-songwriter Carol Wilson is this week unveiling a deeply personal song for her daughter Lily.

‘Lily’ is a love letter, full of soulful, honest and raw emotion.

Out on Tuesday 4th March, ‘Lily’ was written as a letter-song by Carol to her daughter when she was 9 years old – around the age where she would slowly be leaving childhood.

Carol said: “I was looking at her playing one day and it dawned on me that she wouldn’t be a child for much longer. She’d soon be entering into the ‘preenage’ world and then teenager. And there was a bit of sadness and worry that came in. I wondered how her life would go. Teenage years are so formative and decisions made that time can last a lifetime. I saw that she was so like me, yet herself, and I started thinking of the mistakes I’d made myself. I prayed that I’d instilled enough self worth in her that she wouldn’t make the same mistakes as me.”

Carol commented “And that’s when I wrote the song – as a wish from my heart to hers. I’ve found that when I play it live people connect strongly to the song, so I’m excited to finally be releasing it now.”

Lily goes live on all streaming platforms at midnight on March 4th and the accompanying music video will be released on March 8th (International Women’s Day).

The track, written and produced by Carol Wilson and recorded at Hedgehog Studios in Donegal, features Laura McFadden on cello, with mixing by Nigel Hegarty and mastering by Ciarán Byrne of CBSounds Dublin (known for his work with U2, Steve Martin, and Elvis Costello).

Carol Wilson from Meenaleck, now living in Rathmullan, has played in venues across the north-west including The Balor, Sandinos, The Guildhall and has opened for Brianna Corrigan of The Beautiful South in Saint Augustines in Derry.

She has released an album (Trouble Me, 2021), a live EP (Live at Balor 2023), nine singles and an Irish language single ‘Grá’.

Wilson placed top three in Music Capital’s First International Singer-Songwriter Competition in Sandinos, Derry in 2023. This led to being invited to compose a song for The People’s Kitchen homeless charity in Belfast.

Wilson now features on their album ‘Kindness on The Streets’ along with artists such as Ralph McTell, Moya Brennan, Mary Black, Frances Black, Damian Dempsey and more.

Donegal woman swaps her desk job for flexibility and fulfilment in healthcare

Ahead of Donegal Education and Training Board’s Further Education and Training (FET) Fair on 4 and 5 March in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny, we’re showcasing the learning and progression experiences of current and former FET students.

A Donegal woman who swapped her desk job to be a community carer says there are massive rewards in helping others.

Katherine McIntyre from Mountcharles, now in her 60s, once worked in offices but now enjoys great flexibility working as a healthcare assistant.

Katherine splits her time between community calls with the Irish Wheelchair Association and day services at a local hub for people with intellectual disabilities.

This career change was sparked by a Health Service Skills course which Katherine completed in 2022 with Donegal Education and Training Board’s (ETB’s) Further Education and Training (FET) Service.

After 26 years at Hospira (which closed in Donegal in 2006), followed by other office roles, Katherine felt a pull towards something more meaningful.

“I just felt I wanted to do something different, something that was more meaningful, something that was on the move rather than sitting at a desk typing all day,” she said.

“I saw the Health Service Skills course and thought, ‘That’s something I want to get into because I feel in helping people, in giving, you receive.’”

The two-year part-time programme, which Katherine did in Donegal Town, combines classroom studying with work experience to give students a QQI Level 5 certificate in modules such as Care of the Older Person, Anatomy and Physiology, Nursing Theory and Practice, Care Skills and Care Support.

The demand for carers is high, as Katherine and her classmates quickly discovered.

“They are crying out for people,” she says. “You are never going to be out of work in this job. I could work seven days a week if I wanted to.”

During their first year, the class received visits from the HSE, the Irish Wheelchair Association, and agencies like Home Instead, all eager to recruit.

Katherine joined the Irish Wheelchair Association part-time while still in her second year of studies. “I thought to myself, ‘Now that I have the practical experience, I want to keep my skills up. I didn’t want to wait another year to begin working.’”

Katherine was already equipped with a good level of work experience before entering employment. The Health Service Skills course requires 60 hours of practical work, which Katherine completed at Harbour Lights Nursing Home in Killybegs.

“I learned an awful lot there,” she recalls. “The management, staff nurses, and HCAs were all very good. It was great to learn the theory and then put it into practice. It totally makes sense why you do what you do.”

Skills such as hand hygiene and infection prevention and supporting the staff nurses all come into the daily shifts while caring for the older person.

Katherine says she was keen to learn as much as possible.

I always said to the staff nurse, ‘If you are doing anything different, let me know. I’d love to learn from it.’ I like to learn, and you never know when something might come up and you need it,” she says.

On completion of the Health Service Skills course, Katherine was delighted to achieve distinctions in all modules but one.

She praises her tutors, Elspeth Vaughan and Edel Kehoe Campbell, for their support.

“It had been a few years since I was studying and writing up assignments, but they always gave good direction, so you are improving every time,” she says.

“There was great support through the guidance, and if you had any issues, you could have counselling. There was language support for those who did not have English as their first language.”

Since completing the course in May 2024, Katherine has found great variety and flexibility in her community care role.

“I have about 10 clients in the community that I visit in the mornings and evenings,” she explains. “One day you could be going from 7 am to 9 pm, but I find the day flies in. I love the flexibility; I can suit my schedule to myself and just give notice if I am not available one day.”

Katherine still meets up with her classmates who have gone on to work in other settings or have opted to continue training.

“Of course, some people realised the programme wasn’t for them and that’s part of it. With any course, sometimes you do the theory, and then you have to put it into practice before you see it’s not something you want to do. Like nursing, it’s not for everyone.”

For those who are interested in healthcare, Katherine recommends the programme as an ideal starting point.

“It was a really interesting course,” she says. “If you like caring for and helping people, you’d really enjoy it. The work is interesting and varied, with built-in flexibility.

“This sector works for people in all walks of life. Quite a few of my colleagues have young children, and they can work around their schedules.

“And if you find the healthcare assistant role is not your thing, there are other streams to go into like special needs assistant or nursing.

“If I weren’t my age, I might have gone into nursing. The options are there, but I figured by the time I finished nursing school, I’d be ready to retire!”

Katherine’s course is just one of the many full and part-time courses offered by Donegal ETB’s FET Service – you’ll find their full range of courses across the county on their website, where you can also apply online at any time: www.donegaletb.ie/fetcoursefinder

Come along to Donegal ETB’s 2025 FET Fair on 04 and 05 March in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny to find out more:

A panel discussion on FET options (PLCs, traineeships and tertiary degrees), apprenticeships and employee training supports begins at 7.00pm.

  • Wednesday 05 March, 10.00am-2.00pm: Those who would like information on the wide range of full and part-time education and training opportunities provided by the ETB’s FET Service are invited to come along to speak to staff to find out more. Déanann Conallach mná a post deisce a mhalartú ar mhaithe le solúbthacht agus sásamh sa chúram sláinte

Roimh Aonach Breisoideachais agus Oiliúna (FET) Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Dhún na nGall an 4 agus an 5 Márta in Óstán an Radisson Blu i Leitir Ceanainn, tá aird á tarraingt againn ar thaithí foghlama agus dul chun cinn na mac léinn reatha agus na n-iar-mhac léinn de chuid FET.

Deir Conallach mná a rinne a post mar chúramóir pobail a mhalartú le bheith ina cúramóir pobail go bhfuil luach saothair ollmhór ag baint le cuidiú le daoine eile.

D’oibrigh Katherine McIntyre ó Thamhnach an tSalainn, atá anois ina cuid 60í, in oifigí tráth dá raibh, ach tá solúbthacht iontach aici anois ag obair mar chúntóir cúram sláinte.

Roinn Katherine a cuid ama idir glaonna pobail le Cumann Cathaoireacha Rothaí na hÉireann agus seirbhísí lae ag mol áitiúil do dhaoine faoi mhíchumas intleachta.

Ba é cúrsa Scileanna Seirbhíse Sláinte a chuir Katherine i gcrích in 2022 le Seirbhís Breisoideachais agus Oiliúna (FET) Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Dhún na nGall (ETB) a spreag an t-athrú gairme seo.

I ndiaidh 26 bliain ag Hospira (a druideadh i nDún na nGall in 2006), agus róil oifige eile ina dhiaidh sin, mhothaigh Katherine rud inteacht níos fiúntaí ag tarraingt uirthi.

“Mhotaigh mé go raibh mé ag iarraidh rud inteacht difriúil a dhéanamh, rud a bhí ní b’fhiúntaí, rud a raibh gluaiseacht ag baint leis seachas a bheith i mo shuí ag deasc i mbun clóscríofa an lá ar fad,” a deir sí.

“Chonaic mé an cúrsa Scileanna Seirbhíse Sláinte agus shíl mé, ‘Is rud é sin ar mhaith liom dul isteach ann siocair go mothaím go bhfaigheann tú luach do shaothair as cuidiú a thabhairt do dhaoine.’”

Leis an chlár páirtaimseartha dhá bhliain, a rinne Katherine i mBaile Dhún na nGall, comhcheanglaítear staidéar sa seomra ranga agus taithí oibre chun teastas QQI Leibhéal 5 a thabhairt do mhic léinn i modúil ar nós Cúram do Dhaoine Scothaosta, Anatamaíocht agus Fiseolaíocht, Teoiric agus Cleachtas Altranais, Scileanna Cúraim agus Tacaíocht Chúraim.

Tá an t-éileamh ar chúramóirí ard, mar a thuig Katherine agus a comhghleacaithe gan mhoill.

“Tá géarghá acu le daoine,” a deir sí. “Ní bheidh tú as obair go deo sa phost seo. D’fhéadfainn a bheith ag obair seacht lá na seachtaine dá mba mhian liom.”

Le linn a gcéad bhliana, fuair an rang cuairteanna ó FSS, ó Chumann Cathaoireacha Rothaí na hÉireann, agus ó ghníomhaireachtaí cosúil le Home Instead, agus fonn orthu uilig daoine a earcú.

Chuaigh Katherine isteach i gCumann Cathaoireacha Rothaí na hÉireann go páirtaimseartha agus í fós ina dara bliain staidéir. “Shíl mé liom féin, ‘Anois agus an taithí phraiticiúil agam, ba mhaith liom coinneáil orm ag úsáid mo chuid scileanna. Ní raibh mé ag iarraidh fanacht bliain eile chun toiseacht ag obair.”

Bhí taithí mhaith oibre ag Katherine cheana féin sula ndeachaigh sí ag obair. Éilíonn an cúrsa Scileanna Seirbhíse Sláinte 60 uair an chloig d’obair phraiticiúil, a chuir Katherine i gcrích ag Teach Altranais Harbour Lights sna Cealla Beaga.

“D’fhoghlaim mé an t-uafás ann,” a mheabhraíonn sí. “Bhí an bhainistíocht, na haltraí foirne agus na HCAnna uilig ar dóigh. B’iontach an teoiric a fhoghlaim agus ansin í a chur i bhfeidhm. Bíonn ciall iomlán leis an fháth go ndéanann tú an rud a dhéanann tú.”

Bíonn scileanna cosúil le sláinteachas láimhe agus cosc ionfhabhtaithe agus tacaíocht a thabhairt do na haltraí foirne go léir i gceist sna sealanna laethúla agus aire á tabhairt agat don duine scothaosta.

Dúirt Katherine go raibh fonn uirthi an oiread agus is féidir a fhoghlaim.

Bhí mé ag rá leis an altra foirne i dtólamh, ‘Má tá aon rud difriúil á dhéanamh agat, cuir ar an eolas mé faoi. Ba bhreá liom foghlaim uaidh.’ Is maith liom an fhoghlaim, agus ní bhíonn a fhios agat riamh cá huair a bhféadfadh rud inteacht teacht chun cinn agus é a bheith de dhíth ort,” a deir sí.

Tar éis di an cúrsa Scileanna Seirbhíse Sláinte a chuir i gcrích, bhí lúcháir ar Katherine gradaim a bhaint amach in achan modúl seachas ceann amháin.

Molann sí a teagascóirí, Elspeth Vaughan agus Edel Kehoe Campbell, as a dtacaíocht.

“Bhí cúpla bliain ann ó bhí mé ag staidéar agus ag scríobh tascanna, ach thug siad treoir mhaith i dtólamh, mar sin bíonn tú ag feabhsú i rith an ama,” a deir sí.

“Bhí tacaíocht mhór ann tríd an treoir, agus dá mbeadh aon fhadhb agat, d’fhéadfá comhairleoireacht a fháil. Bhí tacaíocht teanga ann dóibh siúd nach raibh an Béarla mar chéad teanga acu.”

Ó chuir sí an cúrsa i gcrích i mí na Bealtaine 2024, tá éagsúlacht agus solúbthacht mhór faighte ag Katherine ina ról cúraim pobail.

“Tá thart ar 10 gcliant agam sa phobal a dtugaim cuairt orthu ar maidin agus um thráthnóna,” a mhíníonn sí. “Lá amháin d’fhéadfá a bheith ag dul ó 7 am go 9 pm, ach téann an lá isteach go gasta domh. Is breá liom an tsolúbthacht; Is féidir liom mo sceideal a chur in oiriúint domh féin agus gan ach fógra a thabhairt mura bhfuil mé ar fáil lá amháin.”

Bíonn Katherine fós ag bualadh lena comhghleacaithe ranga a chuaigh ar aghaidh ag obair i suíomhanna eile nó a roghnaigh leanstan ar aghaidh leis an oiliúint.

“Ar ndóigh, thuig roinnt daoine nár oir an clár dóibh agus baineann sé le hachan rud. I gcás cúrsa ar bith, ó am go chéile déanann tú an teoiric, agus ansin caithfidh tú í a chur i bhfeidhm sula bhfeiceann tú nach bhfuil tú ag iarraidh tabhairt faoi. Cosúil leis an altranas, ní d’achan duine é.”

Dóibh siúd a bhfuil suim acu i gcúram sláinte, molann Katherine an clár mar thúsphointe den scoth.

“Cúrsa iontach suimiúil a bhí ann,” a deir sí. “Más maith leat aire a thabhairt do dhaoine agus cuidiú leo, bhainfeá taitneamh millteanach as. Tá an obair suimiúil agus éagsúil, le solúbthacht ionsuite.

“Oireann an earnáil seo do dhaoine in achan ghné den saol. Tá leanaí óga ag roinnt mhaith de mo chomhghleacaithe, agus is féidir leo oibriú timpeall ar a sceidil.

“Agus má aimsíonn tú nach n-oireann an ról mar chúntóir cúraim sláinte duit, tá sruthanna eile ann ar féidir dul isteach iontu amhail cúntóir riachtanas speisialta nó altranas.

“Mura mbeadh an aois seo agam, seans go dtéinn leis an altranas. Tá na roghanna ann, ach shíl mé go mbeinn réidh le dul ar scor faoin am go mbeadh an scoil altranais curtha i gcrích agam!”

Níl i gcúrsa Katherine ach ceann amháin den iliomad cúrsaí tacaíochta cúraim sláinte lánaimseartha agus páirtaimseartha a thairgtear trí Sheirbhís FET ETB Dhún na nGall – gheobhaidh tú an raon cúrsaí iomlán atá acu ar fud an chontae ar a suíomh gréasáin, áit ar féidir leat iarratas a dhéanamh ar líne am ar bith: www.donegaletb.ie/fetcoursefinder
