Pope Francis admits fragility as Pontiff enters fifth week of hospital stay

Pope Francis has acknowledged that he is “fragile”, in a message issued through the Vatican today.

Today marked the fifth Sunday in a row that the Pope had not delivered his traditional Sunday Angelus prayer in person, but instead via a message published by the Vatican.

It’s as the 88-year-old Pontiff continues to battle lung issues, despite some positive improvements being noted in recent days.

“I am sharing these thoughts with you while I am facing a period of trial, and I join with so many brothers and sisters who are sick: fragile, at this time, like me,” Pope Francis wrote as part of his personal message this Sunday.

“Our bodies are weak but, even like this, nothing can prevent us from loving, praying, giving ourselves, being for each other, in faith, shining signs of hope,” the Pontiff said.

The Pope also issued his thanks to all of the hospital staff that have aided in his care, and the many well wishes he has received during his prolonged hospital stay.

He is expected to remain in hospital for a period, with the Vatican issuing an update yesterday stating that the aging pontiff requires “… hospital medical therapy, motor and respiratory physiotherapy,” which have resulted in his condition “showing further, gradual improvements.”

A group of phenomenal Donegal climbers have punched well above their weight on a charity climb to the Base Camp of Mount Everest – including professional boxer Jason Quigley.

Plans for the Errigal to Everest charity hike began a year ago, with the aim of raising vital funds for the Bluestack Special Needs Foundation.

Eight days and dozens of kilometers later, the thirteen Donegal men and women have reached their goal at the Base Camp of Mount Everest, raising €40,200 in the process.

At an altitude of 5,364 metres, Everest’s Base Camp sits 4,613 metres above Mount Errigal – bringing at least some of this group well out of their element!

One of the group included professional boxer Jason Quigley, with the Ballybofey man far from his comforts in the Twin Towns and the boxing ring.

He posted his reaction on social media after the group reached their target this afternoon.

“After 8 days of trekking, we finally reached Everest Base Camp!,” Quigley said.

“The journey has been tough, relentless, and absolutely unforgettable – but standing here, surrounded by the giants of the Himalayas, makes it all worth it. No words can describe the feeling!”

“Most importantly, this challenge was all for an incredible cause – The Bluestack Foundation.”

The Errigal to Everest fundraisers after reaching Everest Base Camp earlier today, in aid of the Bluestack Foundation.

“To celebrate this moment, let’s keep the support going! If you haven’t already, please consider donating – every bit helps make a difference.”

“A massive thanks to everyone who has supported so far—it’s been felt with every step. Time to soak it all in!”

The group was led by experienced Everest trekker Jono Griffin, from Wild and Free Adventure in Donegal Town.

This journey marked the eighth time that Jono has led a fundraising journey to Everest Base Camp.

The group of amazing trekkers also included Ciaran McHugh, Kris Alison, Matthew Alison, Shauna Chambers, Anna Good, Paul Good, Karen Walden, Mark Hartigan, Jason Connor, Andrea Dillon and Linda Adams.

The Errigal to Everest fundraising page is still accepting donations – you can donate to it here.

Donegal defeated by Tyrone in National League derby clash

Donegal 0-19 v 0-25 Tyrone

Tyrone, for now at least, gave their survival hopes a real boost with a derby win over Donegal.

In front of 8,410 in Letterkenny, Malachy O’Rourke’s side had too much in the tank for a much-changed Donegal on a day when the visitors’ need was greater.

With Michael Murphy back in from the start for the first time since 2022, Donegal – despite being shorn several of their regular performers – stayed in striking distance for long spells here, but Tyrone had six to spare at the conclusion.

Eleven minutes from the end, Murphy, having taken receipt of Domhnall Mac Giolla Bhríde’s probing ball forward, provided an assist for sub Eoin McHugh, but the Kilcar man rattled the crossbar.

With their own goal frame shaking, Tyrone stirred and Darren McCurry bent over a point that eased any nerves – and keeps their chances of staying in Division 1 alive into the final day next weekend when Dublin go to Omagh.

The full-house signs went up for the 2,500-seater Dr James McDaid stand around 90 minutes before the throw-in in Letterkenny.

Tyrone, desperately in need of a win to hold off the cold fingers of relegation, began well with Darragh Canavan and goalkeeper Niall Morgan – who was named as the Man of the Match – popping over points inside of four minutes.

Jim McGuinness, who said a fortnight ago that he would “do what’s right for our players” in terms of his selection, made 11 changes with Michael Murphy – after two influential showings off the bench against Armagh and Derry – handed a first start in some 33 months.

With their own Division 1 position for 2026 already safe, Donegal made wholesale switches with only Mark Curran, Hugh McFadden, Jamie Brennan, and Niall O’Donnell remaining in the XV from the side that began their win over Derry a fortnight earlier.

The teams were level four times in the opening 25 minutes, but Tyrone outscored Donegal by five points to one in the last 10 minutes of the first half.

Murphy and Brennan each clipped three points in part one. Indeed, Brennan might have had a goal in the 14th minute but the Bundoran man, after slaloming into position following a determined solo run, riffled just over Morgan’s crossbar.

When Ciaran Daly and Mark Bradley – coaxed back to the Tyrone squad over the winter by O’Rourke – scored two in a minute Tyrone were 0-9 to 0-6 in front with eight minutes until the break.

While Brennan narrowed the margins a little, Tyrone finished the half strongly. Bradley converted a free and Kieran McGeary drilled over a fine score two put them in front by four, 0-11 to 0-7.

After Charles McGuinness – among those in the home side in for their first starts of the year – was denied by Morgan, who beat away the Naomh Conaill man’s effort, the ball stayed alive. The hooter had sounded, but there was still time for Daly to find his range again for a 0-12 to 0-7 advantage at the short whistle. McGuinness had been fed by the involved Mac Giolla Bhríde, but Morgan saved and Tyrone recycled to add the final score of the first half.

The Red Hands were denied at the death last time out against Galway when Shane Walsh landed a last-gasp two-point free to rescue a point for the Tribesmen.

Memories will have been fresh, too, of Donegal roaring back to chew up an eight-point deficit on their way to beating Derry in Ballyshannon.

Morgan boomed over a delightful two-pointer from a 50-metre free in the 40th minute to put Tyrone ahead by double scores, 0-16 to 0-8, in the 40th minute.

With Peter Harte, Michael McKernan and Brian Kennedy on target, Tyrone were going through the gears nicely.

Their dominance was punctured by a beautiful Donegal score. Niall O’Donnell, the St Eunan’s man on familiar turf, spread the ball across field for Caolan McColgan to slot over a two-pointer.

Donegal might have been minus some regulars, but they stormed right back into it.

Naomh Conaill trio Kevin McGettigan, Finnbarr Roarty and an Odhrán Doherty two-pointer reduced the arrears to four points with 20 minutes to go.

Another two-point free by Morgan, expertly executed from the left-hand side, put a little more distance between them again

Two-time All-Star goalkeeper Morgan showed his worth out the field with a majestic catch in the 58th minute that helped tee up Seanie O’Donnell for a score that put Tyrone seven up, 0-24 to 0-17.

Ciaran Moore and McHugh got on the scoresheet while Jonny Carlin and Keelan McGroddy came off the bench in the closing stages for their Donegal senior debuts.

Scorers for Donegal: Michael Murphy 0-4 (0-2f), Jamie Brennan 0-4, Odhran Doherty (1 2pt), Caolan McColgan (1 2pt), Ciaran Moore 0-2 each Hugh McFadden, Kevin McGettigan, Finnbarr Roarty, Mark Curran, Eoin McHugh 0-1 each

Old Orchard Saturday Division Two
Drumoghill F.C. Reserves 2 v 9 Letterkenny Rovers Reserves
(No Report Submitted)

Brian Mc Cormick Sports Premier Division
Fanad United 2 v 1 Swilly Rovers
Fanad United welcomed old rivals Swilly Rovers to Traigh-a-Loch on Friday night and recorded a 2-1 victory. If it wasn’t for an inspired performance from Swilly keeper Barry Gallagher they could have won by a greater margin. Played in ideal conditions it was Fanad who opened the scoring after 5 minutes. A through ball from Oisin Langan found Eddie O’Reilly in the box and he rounded the keeper to score. The lead lasted 10 minutes as Swilly got an equaliser. A ball down the middle found Ian Ward who showed good composure to go past the Fanad defence and score. Two minutes later a Liam Mc Grenaghan free kick was flicked on to Eddie O’Reilly who’s shot looked goal bound only for Swilly keeper Barry Gallagher to produce a superb save. On the half hour mark, Liam Mc Grenaghan let fly from distance but his shot was deflected just over the bar. Fanad continued to push and in the 35th minute a Keelin Mc Elwaine cross found Eddie O’Reilly 6 yards out but his header produced another fine save from Barry Gallagher. A few minutes later Eoin Logue was unlucky to see his shot from the edge of the box skim the top of the bar. With 5 minutes gone in the second half, Fanad scored what turned out to be the winning goal. A Liam Mc Grenaghan cross to the back post was headed back by Paddy Carr to Eddie O’Reilly who fired home from 6 yards. The Fanad pressure continued and in the 65th minute a Daibhid Lynch cross found Eddie O’Reilly who was denied by a superb point blank save from Barry Gallagher. Swilly kept going and created a few half chances but none of them worried Fanad keeper Darran Nash. The last chance of the game fell to Paddy Carr but his well hit shot from 12 yards was palmed away yet again by Barry Gallagher. Referee: Alister Gourley

Saturday 15th March 2025
Glencar Inn Saturday Division One
Keadue Rovers Reserves 2 v 0 St. Catherines Reserves
Keadue’s development team had their first win in several months with this hard-fought win over St. Catherine’s in ideal conditions at Central Park. Keadue made the brighter start with a cross in the fourth minute being met by Martin Ferry, whose header hit off the post. Keadue had another chance on eight minutes when Chris Greene’s header went wide. On ten minutes St. Catherine’s Josh Cunningham had an effort easily saved by the Keadue keeper. The same player had another effort for the visitors on fourteen minutes but blazed over. Chris Greene was showing well for Keadue up front in the opening minutes and should’ve given Keadue the lead on twenty minutes when through but struck it straight at the keeper. St. Catherine’s came more into the game by the half hour mark. The second half started at a good pace, both sides eager to get the win. The visitor’s first opening was called offside, while for Keadue, Michael Greene was proving a good outlet on the left wing. Greene shot over on sixty minutes and for all the Keadue possession, St. Catherine’s were defending well and hitting with pace on the break through Josh Cunningham. They had the first really-good chance of the second half when, from a corner, the ball struck the post. As the half went on it looked like a goalless outcome but one goal was likely to decide it and as the game went into its final fifteen minutes it was Keadue who got the opener. From an Odhran Gallagher free kick, which was well placed at the far post, Martin Ferry stole in to head in. St. Catherine’s were still proving dangerous up front and the Keadue rearguard had to be alert to nip out any attacking forays. Keadue did break away well for the 2nd goal near the end to settle the tie. David Mac Shane made a fine run up the right-hand side and delivered a ball to Oran Fallon who took on the defender and rattled it home to the roof of the net three minutes from the end to give Keadue some much needed points in their battle for survival. Overall, the game was even enough and looked like a point apiece before Keadue’s late strikes gave them the 3 points. Best for St. Catherine’s were Josh Cunningham, Jack Elliott and Niall Boyle while best for Keadue were Martin Ferry, Odhran Boyle and Michael Greene. Referee: George Clinton.

Oldtown Celtic 3 v 0 Arranmore United
(No Report, Match Postponed)

Old Orchard Saturday Division Two

Gweedore Celtic Reserves 2 v 1 Kilmacrennan Celtic Reserves
Gweedore Celtic snatched all the points in this closely fought encounter with a goal in the eighty fifth minute. Very little separated the teams even though Na Ceiltigh hit the front as early as the tenth minute when Caolan Laux’s corner was headed to the net by Alan Doherty. Kilmacrennan did have their own chances to level matters before half time. Fegan and Mc Daid had good efforts saved by Joe Mc Gee whilst Darragh Mc Gee had a chance to extend the home team’s lead but Kilmacrennan goalkeeper Mallon saved to keep his team in the game. The second half saw Gweedore having two chances for Darragh Mc Gee and Joey Gillespie but they both failed to score. Kilmacrennan equalised from a Terence Shiels free kick and with twenty minutes remaining it was anyone’s game. With a draw looking imminent, Darragh Mc Gee struck for the winner, scoring from close range after good work from substitute Noa Freel. Browne and Shiels were best for Kilmacrennan, brothers Darragh and Micheal Mc Gee for Na Ceiltigh. Referee: Seimi Ferry

Finn Travel Saturday Division Three
Bonagee United Reserves 3 v 2 Ballybofey United Reserves
(No Report Submitted)

Drumkeen United Reserves 3 v 3 Gweedore United Reserves
Gweedore United were the visitors to St Patrick’s Park on Saturday afternoon for the latest game in the Saturday League Finn Travel Division Three. Drumkeen dominated the early stages of the game but found themselves a goal behind as Oran Ferry put the visitors ahead just before the half hour mark. There were to be no more goals in the first half. Drumkeen went to the dressing rooms a goal behind at the break but they had a few goal chances and felt they should have been ahead. Drumkeen started the second half well and got back on level terms on the hour mark as Eoghan Kennedy set up Sean Collum for the equaliser. Gweedore however had not gone away and James Morahan had them back in front about 5 minutes later. The game was getting lively now as Emmet O’Boyle’s cross from the left wing was well finished by Sean Collum to get Drumkeen back on level terms. Drumkeen then got in front for the first time as Ryan James set up Lee Guthrie for his weekly goal. With about twenty minutes still to go Drumkeen now seemed to be in control of the game but Gweedore kept battling away and with ten minutes left got back on level terms. The visitors were awarded a penalty which was well dispatched by Francis Gallagher to leave things all-square again. That was the way it stayed for the remaining 13 minutes and both teams had to be content with a shared of the spoils. This was and entertaining enough game played in a good sporting manner at a cold but dry St Patrick’s. Referee: Rory O’Gorman.

Milford United Reserves 1 v 2 Lagan Harps Reserves
Lagan went away from Milford victorious with a 2-1 win. Lagan took the lead in the 17th minute, a through ball from Jack Duncan fed Drew Dodds. They made it 2-0 just before half time. Lagan could have had a few more goals in the first half only to be denied on multiple occasions by the woodwork. Milford had no answer for Lagan in the first half but found another gear in the second half. Declan Jordan saved Milford on a few occasions with excellent saves. Shay Gibbons finished well to get a consolation goal late in the second half. Best for Milford on the day were Shay Gibbons and Declan Jordan.

Donegal Physiotherapy and Performance Centre Division Two
Raphoe Town 3 v 4 Deele Harps
Scoring started early when Deele broke through the Raphoe defence after just 3 minutes to take an early lead with Conor Catterson making it 0-1. Raphoe settled after that and grew into the game and got rewarded when a Joel Cullen pass down the wing sent Oran Kelly through on goal but selfishly he squared the ball to Bobby O’Loughlin for a tap in, 1-1.
Deele responded quickly when Jordan Duffy beat the defence to slot past the advancing goalkeeper Stephen Conaghan, 1-2. With Duffy causing the defence lots of problems he squared the ball for Shane Mc Croary to finish from close range, 1-3 after 30 minutes. Raphoe steadied the ship again and just before half-time a quick one-two between Oisin Kelly and Bobby O’Loughlin allowed Kelly to shoot past the keeper to make it 2-3 at the break. Raphoe came out all guns blazing in the second half and when Max Mc Bride’s long clearance found Oisin Kelly he rounded the keeper and scored his second of the day it was game on at 3-3. The game was on a knife edge and the momentum was with Raphoe, creating chance after chance, but Deele’s experience weathered the storm and 10 minutes from the end Declan Lafferty’s shot from inside the box made it 3-4. Raphoe’s young guns kept it going right to end and could not get the equaliser they deserved but it was a good performance to finish off the season.

Sunday 9th March 2025
Brian Mc Cormick Sports Premier Division
Kilmacrennan Celtic 1 v 6 Letterkenny Rovers
Letterkenny ran out comfortable winners at community centre against under strength Kilmacrennan side. They took lead on 40 minutes when Nathan Plumb rose highest to head home from a BJ Banda cross. Lee Mc Monagle found top corner on 60 minutes from inside the box after a defensive error. Caolan Curran got Kilmacrennan’s goal on 62 minutes when he calmly finished after Matty Mc Laughlin’s shot was parried out by the Letterkenny keeper. On 70 minutes Banda got on the scoresheet when he calmly rounded the keeper and slotted home. Lee Mc Monagle missed a penalty on 75 minutes as the Kilmacrennan keeper saved well. Banda got his 2nd on 78 minutes and Nathan Plumb finished well on 85 minutes when he was left unmarked inside 6-yard box. Banda completed his hat-trick on 88 minutes. Best for Rovers were BJ Banda and Chris Malseed. Caolan Curran was Kilmacrennan’s best player. Referee: Michael Connolly

Temple Domestic Appliances Division One
Castlefin Celtic 4 v 0 Cranford United
Castlefin cruised to a comfortable victory over Cranford. The home side took the lead through Jude Patton after a Daithi Gordon cross. The second half continued in the same fashion. Patton completed his hat-trick and Dean Kelly finished off the scoring.

Lifford Celtic 1 v 3 Gweedore United
Lifford took on Gweedore United at the Greenbrae. Gweedore opened the scoring 3 minutes in with Lifford pulling back an equaliser 18 minutes later through Aaron Porter. Half time seen the sides remain level. Both teams battled hard in the 2nd half but Gweedore took their opportunity in the 77th minute to go 2-1 up and increased their lead in the 85th minute.

Donegal Physiotherapy and Performance Centre Division Two
Drumkeen United 0 v 1 Drumoghill F.C.
Drumoghill were the visitors to St Patrick’s Park on Sunday afternoon for this Donegal Physiotherapy Division Two match. The home team’s season has fizzled out in recent weeks but Drumoghill still had something to play for as they arrived in Drumkeen looking for a win to keep alive their hopes of securing third place in the Division and the play-off spot.
The first half was uneventful with neither Goalkeeper unduly troubled. Freddie did have a chance for Drumkeen while at the other end Drumoghill may feel that they should have been awarded a penalty. Drumoghill started the second half on the attack and soon got themselves a corner. Richie Moore’s corner was headed home at the far post by Karol Mc Ginley to give Drumoghill the lead. No doubt Richie will be claiming an assist for that one against his old Club. Apart from the goal there was very little between these teams throughout the game with very little created by either side in terms of clear cut chances. Drumkeen were defending well with Mickey Black and the rest of the defence keeping Drumoghill at bay but they couldn’t seem to get their attacking game going and never really created any good chances for Freddie up front. In the last 20 minutes Drumkeen did go a bit more direct as Goalkeeper Luke Russell tried a few long balls which did put Drumoghill under a bit of pressure. The long ball pressure did result in a few corners and a few goal mouth situations but sadly for the home team they couldn’t manage an equaliser. Drumoghill hung on for the win and the 3 points they needed. Both teams tried hard throughout and the game was played on a Good Competitive sporting manner. Referee: Seamus Ferry.

“We’re not trying to lose games”– McGuinness defends Donegal team selection

$
0
0

There are a few things Donegal manager Jim McGuinness can abide, but anyone suggesting that his Donegal team would take the field without trying to win a game is not among them.

Donegal, already assured of their Division 1 status, fell to a 0-25 to 0-19 defeat in Letterkenny on Sunday after making 11 changes to the team that had beaten Derry two weeks ago.

And with Tyrone battling for survival, the visitors had the greater urgency, but McGuinness dismissed any notion that his side treated the game lightly.

“I never want to be in a spot where I’m standing on the sideline in my own county with the mind of not trying to win a game,” McGuinness said in the wake of Donegal’s six-point defeat to Tyrone in Letterkenny. “I never want to be in that spot.”

So, in case there was any ambiguity, McGuinness was making sure to draw a line under it. Donegal did not set out to lose this game. They did not roll over and let Tyrone waltz through them, and did not treat it like a glorified challenge match or an exercise in load management. If you thought otherwise, McGuinness had some choice words.

“I don’t tend to get involved in that stuff anymore, but I did see a few comments that we were going out there trying not to win. I don’t know how someone can put pen to paper and write that. They must know my thoughts if they can write that. They have to know what I’m thinking, but that’s not what I was ever thinking.”

What he was thinking, it seems, was that Donegal’s objective was broader than the specifics of 70 minutes against Tyrone. With their Division 1 status already safe, McGuinness rang the changes. Michael Murphy, back in from the start for the first time since 2022, led a team featuring a blend of youth, experience, and players looking to edge their way into the summer picture.

“We’re happy with our performance considering we had a lot of changes,” McGuinness said. “There are fellas around the camp trying to put their hand up and get an opportunity, so I suppose the games up to this point gave us the opportunity to do that.

“So, on the whole, we’re very proud of them, they kept working and kept going. Our objective was trying to get as many people as possible to the level before the Derry game, so I thought we produced a lot of big performances.”

For long spells, they were there or thereabouts. With Murphy and Jamie Brennan kicking three points apiece in the first half, Donegal stayed in touch until Tyrone pulled five clear before the break.

McGuinness’s side had their moments in the second half too, with Niall O’Donnell’s sublime diagonal ball setting up a fine two-pointer for Caolan McColgan. There was even the hint of something bigger when Eoin McHugh rattled the Tyrone crossbar in the closing stages. But the visitors had more on the line, and it showed.

“Tyrone asked questions of us, they came here, and they had a lot to play for, but we were very happy with the application,” McGuinness said. “Physically it was a big ask of our boys, but on the football side we did really well.”

In the end, Donegal’s challenge ran out of road, with Niall Morgan’s free-taking and Darren McCurry’s late score making sure of Tyrone’s victory. Still, this wasn’t a game lost on effort. The kickouts, McGuinness noted, were a problem early on, though there was an improvement as the game wore on.

“We struggled to get our kickouts away in the first half, that improved in the second half when we pushed up and that allowed us to ask more questions of Tyrone,” he said. “We competed really well in the air, but overall, there were a lot of fellas there today who will get a lot out of that game and that’s what we want. We want to get as many fellas as possible into the picture.”

There were positives dotted around the field. McGuinness was keen to highlight the contributions of Odhran McFadden-Ferry, Hugh McFadden, and Jamie Brennan, while Eoin McHugh and Ciaran Moore made their presence felt off the bench. Jonny Carlin and Keelan McGroddy earned their senior debuts in the closing stages too.

“We have a plan for every player and where we want to get them to,” McGuinness said. “We are trying to build everybody and today was a good opportunity for Michael (Michael) in a home game to move up his minutes following the Armagh and Derry game.”

But the main event is still to come. With Donegal already safe, next weekend’s clash is another chance to refine, to tweak, to bring more players up to the required level.

“We have to now look at the players who played a lot up to this point and not forget about them either,” McGuinness said. “We need to keep them ticking over but we need to now go back and look at what we have for next weekend.

“We’re not trying to lose games. We went out today to win that match and we’ll be doing the same next week, and we’ll look at every player and see how we can get them in the best spot for Derry, that’s the objective.”

It wasn’t to be for Danny O’Carroll as Rhys McClenaghan was crowned the winner of the 2025 edition of Dancing With The Stars.

The Dubliner, who lives in Donegal, poured his heart out in a jam-packed Final.

Danny and his partner, professional dancer Salome Chachua, scored 37 in their show dance with an energetic performance.

We also got a look behind the scenes as Danny once again had the support of his family behind him all the way.

During rehearsals, while struggling with back pain, Danny got a boost from a surprise visit from his eldest son Jamie.

It was yet another emotional family moment for Danny after his dad Brendan jetted home from Florida to surprise him for the semi-final last week.

However in the end it was Olympic Gold medallist Rhys McClenaghan and dance partner Laura Nolan who lifted the glitterball trophy, receiving a perfect score of 40 on his final showdance and receiving a standing ovation from the audience and judges after his performance.

Patrick McBrearty in race against time to return for Ulster Championship opener

Patrick McBrearty is in a race against the clock to be fit for Donegal’s Ulster SFC clash with Derry.

The Kilcar man sat out Sunday’s 0-25 to 0-19 defeat by Tyrone in Letterkenny – and Jim McGuinness admits that time isn’t on his side with Derry due in Ballybofey on April 6.

McBrearty has missed Donegal’s last three games having suffered a dead leg and what has been described by his manager as a “soft tissue injury”.

The 31-year-old forward will have the injury reassessed by medics in Dublin this week.

“We’ll see how that goes,” McGuinness said, admitting that the player is “probably in a race for the Derry game”.

He said: “We will try to get him ready, but if there is a risk we won’t. We have to be careful and get that part of it right.”

McGuinness has reported that Michael Langan is “very, very close” while Brendan McCole is also recovering from an injury.

There was also a positive bulletin, too, on Cloughaneely midfielder Jason McGee, who has yet to play for the county this year.

“The positive with Jason is that he is pain free for the first time in three years,” McGuinness said.

“He had fairly major surgery in the summer and he’s coming out of the back of the surgery and into the return-to-play phase.

“We just hope now that he progresses and that he stays pain free. He did brilliant things for us the whole way through Ulster. It hasn’t been straightforward for him.

“He is very focused and he is doing all the right things and we are happy with how he is progressing.”

Late Arrival: Jonny Carlin makes Donegal debut at 29!

Main pic: Jonny Carlin makes his way off the O’Donnell Park pitch after his debut against Tyrone. Pic: Evan Logan.

It was a classic case of ‘better late than never’ for Jonny Carlin as he finally made his Donegal debut today, aged 29!

A remarkable feat given the Red Hughs clubman has never played at underage level for the county, nor has he been part of any senior panel.

Introduced for the legendary Michael Murphy in the 63rd minute against Tyrone in O’Donnell Park, the Cross man didn’t put a foot wrong and even made a timely dispossession shortly after entering the fray.

He put in a man-of-the-match performance to win a Wicklow Intermediate Football Championship final for his adopted Barndarrig in October 2023 and joined Oisín McConville’s county setup last season before transferring back to his home club. Carlin also made headlines in 2018 when his wonder goal helped win an Ulster Junior Championship final for Red Hughs.

His journey is made all the more remarkable for that fact that, in October 2022, he underwent surgery for an ACL and didn’t play football for 12 months until the Wicklow IFC decider.

In the preceding years, Carlin had been plying his trade in the League of Ireland with Cabinteely and Athlone Town and, more recently, in the Northern Ireland Championship with Armagh City.

Of course, he comes from good sporting stock. His mother Shauna was an elite athlete with Finn Valley AC and competed for Ireland while father, Declan, was a key member of the famous Red Hughs side of the early 1990s and made a handful of league appearances for the county. His uncle, Marty, also starred for Donegal in the 80s and early 90s.

But, it has been somewhat of a return to his GAA roots after catching the eye of Donegal manager, Jim McGuinness.

An inspirational journey, Carlin is living proof that it really is never too late to realise your dream.

Lough Derg is one of three esteemed traditional pilgrimage locations to be designated by the Irish Bishops’ Conference as national places of pilgrimage in the Jubilee Year.

Saint Patrick’s Purgatory in Co. Donegal, alongside Knock Shrine and Croagh Patrick in Mayo have been selected as national pilgrimage sites for 2025.

Members of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference gathered this week for their Spring 2025 General Meeting in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

During the meeting, the bishops commended Monsignor Laurence (La) Flynn (Prior of Lough Derg), Father John Kenny, Administrator of Westport Parish (Croagh Patrick) and Father Richard Gibbons (Parish Priest and Rector of the International Eucharistic and Marian Shrine at Knock) for creating the concept of the ‘Pilgrim’s Passport’.

The Pilgrim’s Passport encourages people to set themselves the spiritual goal of visiting the three national sites during this Jubilee year.

Bishop Fintan Monahan of Killaloe, the Jubilee 2025 designate of the Bishops’ Conference, will participate in the online launch for the Pilgrim’s Passport which will take place at 3.00pm on 26 March on www.pilgrimspassport.ie

Bishops say that this Jubilee 2025 not only represents a time of grace and spiritual renewal for the entire Church, but also offers the opportunity to the faithful to experience reconciliation, mercy, and renewed communion with God and with our brothers and sisters.

Gallery: Inside Rathmullan man’s stunning seaside house revival

Courtyard or no courtyard, Donegal man Eoghan O’Riain created an incredible ode to Rathmullan’s history and heritage in his new home which featured on RTÉ’s ‘The Great House Revival’ last night.

Episode six of the show last night headed to the Swilly village to follow the renovation of a three-story merchant home.

Asset Manager Eoghan O’Riain had travelled all over the world, but his dream was to settle in his mother’s home place in Rathmullan.

He had bought a terrace house to transform, with ambitions to be completed by Christmas 2023.

Architect Hugh Wallace was clearly delighted with the project and Eoghan’s passion for perfection, and the jovial discussions they had provided great entertainment.

The programme saw Eoghan place a careful focus on bringing Donegal colours and local history into the design, and he even met with local historian Angela Byrne to learn about Rathmullan’s international connections that go back centuries, including the Flight of the Earls.

Eoghan soon carved his legacy within the property through a stunning bespoke stained glass window at his door, facing directly onto the glistening Swilly shore.

Overcoming debates with Hugh over a courtyard and the soft Donegal climate, Eoghan proved himself to be a dynamic project manager, with a great team of tradesmen and women, delivering a cosy and stylish retreat.
