On March 14, 2025, the Tirconnaill Commemoration Committee commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the execution of four republicans in Drumboe Woods by Free State forces.

As part of their ongoing series of successful events marking the 100th anniversary, the committee launched a book chronicling the annual commemorations held for the Drumboe Martyrs from 1923 to 2023.

The book launch took place in the Drumboe Suite at Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey, and was officiated by Martin Ferris, former Sinn Féin TD and Political Prisoner.

The book is a compilation of commemorations throughout the years, featuring photographs, short historical essays, details on the construction of the Drumboe monuments, and excerpts from notable speeches.

Mr. Ferris brought a unique perspective to the launch as a Kerry republican, given that three of the Drumboe martyrs were also from Kerry.

He spoke of his connection to the families of the executed men, particularly Charlie Daly’s sister Mai, and her lifelong activism and republicanism. Mr. Ferris also shared his own experiences as a political prisoner and his activism throughout the years.

The launch was well-attended by local councillors, TDs, and members of the community. Cllr Dakota Nic Mheanman expertly chaired the event, extending thanks to the organising committee and Martin Ferris for their contributions.

There are currently six stations across Donegal without an assigned garda.

That figure is the third highest in the country, after Cork and Tipperary, according to a report in today’s Irish Independent.

Official figures from the Department of Justice show 129 of the 567 stations nationally recorded a reduction in the number of Gardaí assigned to them last year.

Cavan town saw the largest decrease with 31 less Gardai, and Ballyshannon was fourth with a drop of 23.

Almost a quarter of the country’s Garda stations had fewer gardaí at the end of 2024 than at the start of the year.

The report has found one in ten stations don’t have a designated Garda on hand.

Minister Charlie McConalogue reflects on successful visit to Colombia

Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue, has said he would welcome a high-level visit from Colombia to Ireland before the end of the Government’s term.

He was speaking at the end of his five-day trip to Colombia, where he represented the state for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

The Minister for State with responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy said: “The key aim of the visit to Bogotá and Medellín was to further deepen our excellent bilateral relations, our support for the peace process and explore how we can strengthen our economic and cultural relations. From that perspective, it was extremely successful.”

“It’s important that we work together, bilaterally, regionally and at multilateral level to address common challenges such as climate change and migration. Like Colombia, Ireland has been broadening our engagement overseas in recent years under our ‘Global Ireland’ strategy. This includes opening new embassies, including in Colombia.”

Commenting on his meeting with organisations searching for disappeared persons supported by the UN Multi-Party Trust Fund, the Minister of State said: “Over 124,000 persons have been disappeared during the conflict in Colombia.

Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue, presenting the gift of a Donegal Pen to Colombia’s Minister for Sports, Patricia Duque. They discussed sports policy in both countries and ideas for increased exchanges in this area between Ireland and Colombia.

“This was an opportunity to express Ireland’s solidarity and support for the peace process and the search for the disappeared. The meeting included representatives from four organisations that are searching tirelessly for people who forcibly disappeared during the armed conflict.”

“For Ireland, our annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are an opportunity to celebrate our international connections and relations, which enrich both Ireland and our partners overseas. It is also a time to connect with the 70 million people around the world of Irish descent.

“In Ireland, we are privileged to have a strong cultural heritage. And in the face of a long history of political, economic and social challenges, Irish people have for centuries turned outwards.

“In so doing, they have carried our traditions of song, story, poetry and dance across the world. Long may those traditions continue. I extend my sincere thanks to the Ambassador of Ireland to Colombia, Fiona Nic Donnacha, and excellent her team their help and support during the visit.”

At the St Patrick’s Day reception at the Ambassador’s Residence in Bogotá, Minister McConalogue announced funding of over €1.5 million for peacebuilding projects in Colombia.

Lack of assigned Gardai in six Donegal stations is “unacceptable”– Doherty

Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty has called a new report which found that six Garda Stations in Donegal are without an assigned Garda as “totally unacceptable”.

The report comes after Deputy Doherty invited the Minister for Justice to come to Donegal to see how under-resourced the Gardaí in Donegal are.

Speaking today, Deputy Doherty said “The findings in this report make stark reading for government. It’s clear that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have turned their backs on rank and file Gardaí.

“They particularly don’t seem to care about policing rural areas such as Donegal.

“There are no less than six stations in Donegal without an assigned Garda.

“That’s totally unacceptable and is in line with what I’ve been hearing from constituents, who have complained about not being able to access Garda when needed, and rank and file Gardaí, who have complained about understaffing and under-resourcing.

“That Ballyshannon Garda Station, one of the county’s major stations, has seen a reduction of 23 Gardaí since the start of 2024 is another worrying statistic.

“The report also shows that Stations with the biggest increases in Garda staffing levels were concentrated in Dublin. I understand there are significant challenges to policing in Dublin, but rural areas like Donegal can’t just be abandoned.

“That is what seems to be happening according to these figures.

“We have unique challenges to policing in Donegal as well and this cannot be forgotten about or dismissed.

“We need an urgent reassessment as to what Garda resources are provided to Donegal.

“These figures also highlight how important it is that Donegal is afforded 3 Garda Community Policing areas, not the two that is currently understood to be coming down the line.”

A popular Letterkenny man who was knocked down and killed near his home yesterday morning will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Anthony and Martin Gallagher, who were both in their 60s, were walking home from a night out in Letterkenny when they were struck by a taxi driven by a teenager.

The incident occurred at the town’s Lower Main Street just before 3am, less than 100 metres from their home.

Anthony Gallagher was a well-known figure in the town where he was employed as a ‘lollipop man’, helping schoolchildren to cross the road – less than 50 yards from where he was fatally injured.

His brother Martin has been transferred to Galway University Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries sustained in the incident.

Both men lived together at the family home at Charlie Daly Terrace.

A young man suspected of driving the vehicle involved in the incident was arrested at the scene and questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station. He was released without charge this morning and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

A decision was later made to cancel the local St Patrick’s Day parade in the town as a mark of respect.

His death brings to five the number of deaths on Donegal roads so far this year.

Huge sadness at sudden passing of Inishowen businessman Charlie ‘Mick’ McLaughlin

There is an air of sadness across Inishowen and Donegal following the sudden and unexpected death of local businessman Charlie ‘Mick’ McLaughlin.

Late of Rockstown, Tooban, Charlie will be remembered as a friendly but astute man who lived for his family and friends.

He was the driving force behind McLaughlin Car Breakers and Dismantlers which became the go-to service for many car owners across the region.

Charlie was just 64 when he passed away on his birthday yesterday, St Patrick’s Day.

He boasted to many that he was the only person born on the day of Ireland’s patron saint who wasn’t called Patrick or Paddy!

Having spent a lifetime developing his business, Charlie was beginning to take things a little slower and was happy to pass the business on to the next generation.

When not working, he spent his later days with his family in and around the family home in Tooban.

But he liked taking to the road too.

Be that in a camper van, on the water in a boat or on one of his four or five electric bikes, Charlie always had time for a chat and a cuppa.

Be it to Downings or to the Ploughing Championships, people found Charlie easy company, a man who took life in his own stride and never judged others.

Charlie is survived his loving wife Kathleen and his children Charles, Aoife, Debra, Odhran and was predeceased by his son PJ.

He is the dear son of Vera and the late Jimmy McLaughlin.

Mr McLaughlin will also be forever missed by his brothers, sisters, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, extended family, friends and neighbours.

Charlie’s remains will be reposing at his home tomorrow Wednesday, 19th March from 12 noon where you are all welcome to pay your respects.

Removal from there on Friday morning, 21st March at 10.15am to St. Mura’s Church, Fahan for Requiem Mass at 11.00am followed by interment in the adjoining graveyard.

Requiem Mass can be viewed on www.churchservices.tv/Fahan.

May you rest in peace, Charlie.

Watch: Donegal band performs in New York’s Central Station!

Main pic: The Cloughaneely Senior Band following their performance in Central Station, New York.

A Donegal marching band marked the loss of three loved ones in tragic circumstances in a poignant ceremony on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge at the weekend.

For the second successive year, Cloughaneely Band received an invitation from The Donegal Association to participate in the city’s prestigious St. Patrick’s Day Parade yesterday.

But little did they know that so much tragedy was to beset their members in a few short weeks.

The band was rocked in February when Enya McMurrough, aged just 13, and daughter of band member Fionnuala, passed away suddenly.

The tightly-knit group were to be shaken again following the recent tragic car crash in Gortahork which claimed the lives of Jamie Diver and Shaun Martin McClafferty.

The young men’s mothers Roise and Sharon are both proud members of the band also.

As part of their trip, the band took a special moment to remember Enya, Jamie, and Shaun Martin, three cherished children whose loss has left an unimaginable void with their loss deeply felt by all.

At sunrise on Sunday morning, they gathered on Brooklyn Bridge to honour the memories of these three beautiful children. In silence, and in love, they stood together as one, ensuring that Enya, Jamie, and Shaun are forever part of their journey.

Following mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral in The Big Apple yesterday morning, they received a special blessing from the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He was accompanied by Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, Eamon Martin.

They then proceeded to march down Fifth Avenue with immense pride—not just for their parish, community, county, and country, but for the children they carried in their hearts.

The band also thrilled commuters when they played a few tunes in the famous Central Station (below).

A group of 32 band members, accompanied by supporters and family, departed from Dublin Airport on Saturday to take part in the historic event.

This incredible opportunity saw the band proudly represent the parish of Cloich Cheann Fhaola on an international stage, performing for an estimated two million spectators along Fifth Avenue, with a further 30 million watching the broadcast.

The money raised through their various fundraising efforts was used solely for equipment, uniforms, travel, and transfers with each band member covering their own flights and accommodation costs for the trip.
