Main pic: Charlie ‘Postie’ O’Donnell who had a strong run in the St Patrick’s Day 3k in Letterkenny.

Over the weekend there were a number of Rosses AC athletes who took part in different road race events.

Firstly, on St Patrick’s Day there was a 3km in Letterkenny with some top athletes taking part.

Two Rosses men took to the road with Charlie ‘Postie’ O’Donnell recording a top ten finish in a great time of 09:21. Graeme Edwards also made his debut in the club colours and had an absolute flyer running 10:32.

The women’s race saw Bernie Boyle run a swift 11:07 and Claire O Donnell powered round in a strong time of 11:41.

Over in Vancouver, Declan Ferry got his season kicked off in a very strong field running the St Patrick’s day 5k running 15:48.

On Saturday a number of athletes took part in the Dungloe parkrun with visitors from Essex, Belfast and Enniskillen joining regular runners. Come join the Park Run any Saturday at 9.30am  – runners, joggers and walkers all welcome in Dungloe opposite Lidl.

The club would like to express a big thanks to Hughie O’Donnell. As with all facilities maintenance is required. Over the past few months with all the weather we had the track surface at Carrickfinn had tightened in and a slippery surface had formed in some places. At the weekend, Hughie O’Donnell Ltd Groundworks & Landscaping gave up his time to take down equipment. Then, bit by bit, he worked the entire track to refresh the surface and do additional maintenance.

The track at Carrickfinn is a key resource for our community for walkers, joggers, etc to use and also used by a number of local clubs.  For Rosses Athletic Club the track is central to our track and field training for all ages and it is hugely appreciated by all at Rosses AC the time and effort put in by Hughie to ensure we have the facility required with many upcoming competitions. Big thanks from all the club.

Moville man’s Boston pub rocks with surprise Ed Sheeran gig!

The Dubliner pub in Boston was the hottest Irish bar in the city on St Patrick’s Day when superstar Ed Sheeran popped in for a surprise set!

The Dubliner is owned by Oran McGonagle from Moville, who has lived in New England since 2009. At the helm of the kitchen is Donegal Town Chef Patron Aidan McGee.

The popular pub was packed to capacity on Monday when Ed Sheeran entered the building for an intimate gig.

The Grammy winner joined Antrim folk band Beoga and Dubliner Aaron Rowe on the stage as they performed a melody of his hits, including Galway Girl, Shape of You, and Nancy Mulligan.

Sheeran was in such good spirits that he finished the gig by announcing a free drink for everyone in the bar!

The gig sent local fans into a frenzy and they rushed to the area as soon as word got out.

“Boston for Paddy’s day with @beogamusic, what a gaff,” Sheeran wrote on social media. Watch here:

A post shared by Ed Sheeran (@teddysphotos)

Oran McGonagle tells Donegal Daily that the idea for the gig all started when Sheeran’s staff visited The Dubliner last year. They were treated to such stellar hospitality that they wanted to pay it back with a pop-up.

Sworn to secrecy, a select team at the bar had a week to organise the sound and security for Sheeran’s Paddy’s Day visit.

“We kept it a secret, with only two or three people knowing,” McGonagle said.

When Ed Sheeran announced his location on a community app on the day, McGonagle said “that’s when things got crazy.”

“We opened the windows and let him play out into the street, where around 500 people had gathered.

“After the set, he hung around for ten minutes, and we got to say hello. I had a friend make him a pair of custom Air Jordans, which we gave him. He then took an epic selfie with me.”

McGonagle is the director of the East Coast Tavern Group, which comprises several bars and restaurants across the Boston area. Earlier this year he opened McGonagle’s Pub in Dorchester as a sister pub to the successful Dubliner in Downtown Boston.

The Dubliner team weren’t the only Donegal folk to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Sheeran!

Greencastle businesswoman Laura Bonner, the founder of the Muff Liquor Company, was also there for the show.

Sheeran is one of the celebrity investors to back Bonner’s spirits company, which held an epic St Patrick’s celebration in New York this week.

“As a committee, we are always delighted to see such positivity amongst the community and talking to people about what Relay actually is. For new Teams and those interested in taking part, we are always available to chat and explain the event, but one of the best ways to find out more is to meet with those who have journeyed with us before and hear first-hand about their experiences. We’d be delighted to see a large crowd on Thursday evening.”

Priest urged to abandon plans to raze historic parochial house

Planners and parishioners have asked a south Donegal Parish Priest not to demolish a historic parochial house.

Fr James Sweeney lodged a planning application to Donegal County Council seeking to raze the derelict dwelling and sheds at Drimarone, Letterbarrow, near Frosses.

The stone two-storey house was built more than a century ago, but has been vacant for around 15 years.

According to planning documents from the priest’s architects, the building is in an ‘extremely poor state’ internally and several areas are ‘in a state of collapse’.

However planners, and some parishioners, strongly disagree and say the house should be refurbished.

The council last month sent Fr Sweeney a Further Information (FI) request, seeking evidence that the building was beyond repair.

Drimarone Church and Parochial House (extreme left) taken between 1922 and 1925 by the then Rev TR Griffith.

Planners asked him to submit further documentary evidence from a specialist contractor clearly detailing the possibility of refurbishment of the subject building as opposed to demolition.

“Applicant is advised that the Planning Authority encourages refurbishment of historic building stock, unless it can be definitively shown that refurbishment is not possible,” the FI requested added.

Seven locals have also lodged objections to the proposed demolition.

One described the proposal as ‘a disgrace’, adding that it was built with the help of local volunteers and with money raised locally.

They also stated the house was not maintained in recent years and refurbishment grants of up to €70,000 are currently available.

“This house would be one of the best stone buildings in the Drimarone area,” they added.

“It should be retained, sold or renovated for local housing need(s).”

Other objectors described the structure as ‘perfectly sound’ and claimed there was no consultation with parishioners.

Letterkenny mourns as road tragedy victim Anthony to be laid to rest today

Mourners are expected to gather in large numbers today for the funeral of local man Anthony Gallagher.

Mr Gallagher tragically lost his life on St Patrick’s Day when he and his brother were struck by a car at Lower Main Street in the early hours of the morning.

Anthony’s brother Martin, who survived the collision with serious injuries, will be unable to attend the funeral as he continues to receive treatment at Galway University Hospital.

Anthony’s Funeral Mass will take place in St. Eunan’s Cathedral this Thursday morning 20th of March at 11am followed by interment in Conwal Cemetery.

Late of 28 Daly Terrace, Anthony was a well-known figure in the town where he was employed as a ‘lollipop man’, helping schoolchildren to cross the road – less than 50 yards from where he was fatally injured.

A teenage boy suspected of driving the vehicle involved in the incident was arrested at the scene and questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station. He was released without charge on Tuesday morning. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

Mr Gallagher is predeceased by his mother Brigid and aunt Rosaleen.

He is survived by his brother Martin, cousin Kevin and his wife Dolores.

He also leaves behind his extended family, neighbours and many friends.

Housing Report fails to recognise those impacted by DCB – Ward

The Housing Commission Report has failed to recognise homeowners impacted by the Defective Concrete Blocks (DCB) crisis, according to Deputy Charles Ward.

The 100% Redress Party TD said the review should have been an opportunity to address this country’s ‘building failures and its weak building regulations’.

“Instead it is yet another Dublin-focused housing report that attempts to sweep the defective blocks crisis under the carpet, and ignore the thousands of impacted homeowners in the west of the country who are struggling to live in their crumbling houses,” Deputy Ward said.

The Housing Commission Report, which was published in May 2024, is over 250 pages long and addresses issues with the housing system in Ireland.

“I was shocked to find there wasn’t a single mention of the defective blocks crisis,” Deputy Ward added.

“Whether this was an oversight or an intentional omission, it is equally concerning. There is no way that we will be able to tackle the housing crisis in Ireland, without also tackling the defective blocks crisis. The government needs to take proactive steps to address the ongoing crisis and prevent it from ever happening again.”

DPP to decide on case after two girls injured in serious Falcarragh road collision

A Donegal Judge has refused jurisdiction in the case of a Castlefin woman charged in relation to a serious road traffic collision.

Geraldine Havlin appeared before Falcarragh District Court in connection with the two-car collision, which occurred at Fanmore, Falcarragh on July 13, 2023.

The Court heard that a 10-year-old girl sustained serious injuries in the incident and, after hearing the nature of the injuries, Judge Éiteáin Cunningham refused jurisdiction.

The case of Havlin, a 58-year-old, of Dungorman, Castlefin, will now go to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for directions.

Havlin was charged that she did drive a vehicle without due care and attention thereby causing serious bodily harm to another person. The charge is contrary to section 52 (1) and 52 (2) (a) of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 as substituted by section 4 of the Road Traffic (No 2) Act 2011.

Havlin is also charged with dangerous driving contrary to section 53 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

Garda Liam O’Riordan told the court that the driver of the other car sustained a broken collar bone, while the child, a passenger in the second vehicle, initially suffered a broken wrist and internal bleeding.

The girl was released that night but two days later was readmitted to hospital having felt unwell. She was diagnosed with a hematoma, caused by the seatbelt of the vehicle arising from the collision.

The court heard that the girl underwent skin graft and had in excess of 30 operations.

“She has put in a tough year,” Garda O’Riordan said.

Medical reports from two hospitals were shown to Judge Cunningham.

“I am sorry, the matter is too serious to be dealt with by this court,” Judge Cunningham said in refusing jurisdiction.

The matter was adjourned until May 21, 2025 for directions from the DPP.

The defendant was represented by solicitor Ms Catherine Boner. Ms Bonner said her client was also badly injured in the incident. The court was informed that the accused woman suffered a broken sternum in the incident.

Judge Cunningham said: “I am not determining liability. Given what was opened to me and the facts outlined, I do not consider it a minor offence and I am obliged to refuse jurisdiction.”

Rallying: Border Navigation Trial Final comes to Cranford

The Border Navigation Trial Championship, sponsored by the Squealing Pig Bar & Restaurant Monaghan comprises of 5 rounds held in counties Monaghan, Cavan, Longford, with Donegal motor club hosting the final round on March 22nd 2025 in the Cranford Community centre.

Navigation trials take place under the cover of darkness & involve plotting time points on an ordinance survey map using a 6 figure grid reference. Each time point is manned by volunteers and will have a specific approach & departure direction.

Competing crews will be penalised for wrong approach / departure or for arriving early / late. Timed to an average speed of 30mph, competitors are allowed 2 min for every one mile travelled and the use of “Road Goes” plots – mucky lanes through farms, bogs or fields, help the organisers slow the competitors down with the aim of crews accruing penalties. At the end of the event it is the crew which accrues the least penalties who wins.

Donegal Motorclub have historically ran extremely successful navigation trials over the years, and have recently began to revive the discipline within the county.

COC for the March event, Milford man Aidan Friel has laid out a tricky 75 mile route. The addition of the border navigation championship will see competitors from all over Ireland compete to claim points to help their championship goals.

Currently Longford/Monaghan pairing Packie Duffy/Evin Hughes lead the championship overall. Letterkenny men Shane Laverty/Ciaran Coyle are joint 3rd in the Semi-Expert class and are hoping local knowledge will earn them a spot on the podium. Aidan Mcdevitt/Aidan Sweeney from glenswilly are 4th and 5th in class respectively. Once again hoping a solid finish will net some points towards the championship.

Leaving Cranford Community Centre at 8:46 the first car will start the event after the maps are plotted and drivers briefing has taken place. Donegal Motorclub members have been out preparing for the event by calling into residents on the route to make them aware of the event and asking permission for various lanes and roads to use.

COC Aidan Friel would like to thank everyone for their assistance, while he is currently putting the final touches to the event, and in particular the wider Cranford Community for welcoming the event back to the area where the very first Donegal Motorclub event was headquartered almost 55 years ago. The group of founding members ran a night event called “The Hills of Donegal” out of Logues of Cranford on 24th July 1970. H.P Johnston was Clerk of the Course and the inaugural winners were Mervyn Johnston/ C.B Curley in a Mini Cooper ‘s’.
