New film follows composer Neil Martin’s journey to Letterkenny stage

A new feature film will be released next week following Belfast born composer Neil Martin as he prepares for a concert in Letterkenny.

Neil Martin – Bóthar an Cheoil on TG4 celebrates Martin’s 25 years with the West Ocean String Quartet while experiencing grief, celebration and new ambitions along the way.

The anniversary concert was held in An Grianán Theatre Letterkenny in July of last tear.

West Ocean String Quartet’s experimental style, which blends traditional and classical music, has earned them much acclaim, and they were joined on stage in Letterkenny by Oscar nominated actor Stephen Rea, trad legend Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill and folk star Jack Warnock.

Neil describes himself as an ‘undisciplined musician’. Although he is no stranger to the spotlight, this project was something different and more personal for him – “I’m both honoured and humbled to be the subject of this film, and deeply grateful to all the creators and contributors. It reasserts to me just how fortunate I have been and continue to be – to collaborate with so many great artists along the way. Their encouragement and support, alongside that of my family, is key to it all.”

Director Damian McCann said: “It was an honour to follow one of Ireland’s most prolific musicians across a year’s worth of work. Neil Martin is an artist I’ve long admired and to be able to witness his artistic process at close quarters has been a career highlight. I hope audiences learn as much from Neil’s creative journey as I have.”

With contributions from his wife Siobhan, four children, bandmates and close friends, this revealing film follows Neil reflecting on the significant moments that have shaped his life, as he embarks on a new chapter in his musical career.

Neil Martin: Bóthar an Cheoil is a Below the Radar TV production for TG4 and BBC Northern Ireland, with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Donegal TikTokker Eric Roberts and his nephew Oisín Roberts Browne joined US actor and comedian Rosie O’Donnell at the weekend for a hugely successful autism inclusion fundraiser.

The AsIAm Same Chance Walk attracted over 1,000 people to Malahide Castle on Saturday to celebrate Autism inclusion and raising vital funds for services across Ireland.

Downings native Eric Roberts, the official ambassador for this year’s Same Chance Walk, has used his platform to raise awareness and share his lived experience, both as a former Special Needs Assistant and a passionate Autism advocate inspired by his family. His 18-year-old nephew Oisín from Carrigart has autism and cerebral palsy and is a popular guest in many of Eric’s videos.

Rosie O’Donnell was joined by her 12-year-old daughter Clay for the walk and said: “It was an honour for Clay and I to join AsIAm today. Inclusion, kindness, and understanding should be a given – and it’s powerful to see people in Ireland come together to support that.”

Eric Roberts, reflecting on the day, said: “Today’s walk wasn’t just about raising awareness – it was about showing up and saying that Autistic people deserve the same chance in every part of life. It was amazing to see so many families, friends and supporters come together to walk for real change.”

Eric Roberts with Adam Harris, CEO of AsIAm and Rosie O’Donnell at Malahide Castle

The walk took place against the backdrop of AsIAm’s newly launched Same Chance Report 2025, which highlights the significant barriers still faced by Autistic people and their families across Irish society – in education, healthcare, employment, and community life. The report, which captures the lived experience of over 1,400 Autistic people and their families, revealed that 86% of respondents feel they do not have the same chance as non-Autistic people in Ireland. Public attitudes, long waiting lists, inadequate support, and financial pressures were among the major challenges cited.

The Same Chance Walk for Autism is supported by PTSB, who continue to champion inclusion as part of their community engagement efforts. Funds raised will support AsIAm’s vital work, helping to deliver services and advocacy for the more than 1 in 27 people in Ireland who are Autistic.

The historic Malin Hall country house has gone up for sale again, with a €825,000 asking price.

The seven-bed period home dates back to 1758, when it was originally constructed for George Harvey, the High Sherriff of County Donegal.

The Harvey family were significant landowners in Donegal, retaining ownership of the property until George Miller Harvey (born 1908) sold it in 1973.

The entire Malin Hall estate was bought by Kathleen and Michael Connolly, who had a vision to turn 100 acres into a retirement village. This dream was realised after the untimely passing of Kathleen in 1999 and now the Connolly Foundation offers independent living for the over 60s in Malin. Malin Hall is accessed via a 400 metre split laneway through the Connolly Foundation Development.

Franklins Estate Agents, who are managing the sale of Malin Hall, describe Malin Hall as a classic protected period property.

This property boasts three reception rooms, a conservatory, seven bedrooms (including two en-suites), a full basement, garages, and a disused swimming pool.

To the outside, the property comes with 5.1 acres and enjoys the most spectacular views over Trawbregga Bay.

Man who bombarded his ex with 375 calls in ONE day appears in court

A man who bombarded his ex-partner with 375 calls and texts in ONE day has been remanded in custody.

The man, who is in his 30s, appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

The accused man, who cannot be named for legal reasons to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case, was brought to court by prison officers as he is currently in custody.

Bail was revoked on older charges and in respect of a new charge of breaching a barring order, bail was refused for the man.

The court heard that the man contacted the woman a total of 375 times, via phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp messages, voice notes and voice mails, in the space of one day.

Mr Michael Shiel, solicitor for the accused, said his client was contacted “on a number of occasions” by the woman herself. “She contacted him on umpteen occasions and the fact is that she is contacting him,” Mr Shiel said.

The court heard that the man’s phone has been seized, but Gardai have to seek a warrant before the court before the device is analysed.

The man was put in the witness box and said he was aware that he was not to contact the woman as part of his bail conditions.

“I have initiated contact on numerous occasions but she has too,” he said.

The man said he found the situation “very difficulty”. Under oath and asked if he would agree not to contact the woman under any circumstances, regardless of the situation, he said: “100 per cent”.

He said the woman contacted a friend of his shortly after his previous court appearance as she was concerned for the accused’s welfare.

He said he felt “under so much pressure to prove to her family that I was worthy of her”.

The man told Judge Éiteáin Cunningham that he has been seeing a child he has with the woman “behind your back, behind Social Services back”.

“How can I win?” the man said. “I am damned if I do and I am damned if I don’t”.

Judge Cunningham said there had been a “flagrant breach” of the court order and reminded the man that one of the conditions was that he was to have no contact whatsoever with the alleged injured party.

“When the court sets bail, it considers the position very carefully and this court does afford the opportunity to take up bail on condition that they are strictly adhered to,” Judge Cunningham said. “I understand that you have reasons, but I have to deal with the application and the conditions set were breached. It is as simple as this: I am satisfied that conditions were breached and, under those circumstances, I have no alternative but to revoke bail”.

Mr Shiel said he was making an application for bail in respect of the new charge against his client.

A Garda witness said that the woman had provided a statement of complaint to gardai. He said that there were concerns that if he were granted bail that he would continue to contact the woman and not abide by the barring order that is in existence.

The woman, speaking via a video link from another room in the courthouse, said she “would like to think that he might have learned something from this”.

Asked if she would be comfortable if the man were granted bail, she said: “If he had no phone, yeah”.

She said that the man has said things that have caused her “hurt and pain”.

“He turns then to call me names,” she said. “I don’t deserve it”.

Mr Shiel asked Judge Cunningham to give his client “one further chance”.

“He has given a sworn undertaking that he will not have any contact,” he said. “He doesn’t have a phone and even if he got a phone he has given a sworn undertaking not to contact her in any way.”

He added that the contact was a “two-way” situation.

Sergeant Jim Collins said that there were no conditions that would allay the fears of gardai.

Judge Cunningham remanded the man in custody to appear again via video link on April 14.

The man is also facing a Circuit Court appearance for assault causing harm to the same woman.

An Indian man who was handed life sentences for the murder of Buncrana woman Danielle McLaughlin has appealed his sentence.

A hearing is set for this week for Vikat Bhagat, 31, who was found guilty of the rape and murder of Danielle on the 14th of March 2017 in Goa, India, when she was 28 years old.

Bhagat was handed two life sentences in February this year after a seven year murder trial.

Local media in Goa reports that crucial evidence secured the conviction of Bhagat in the mammoth trial.

Evidence connecting Bhagat to the crime included a broken pair of spectacles, with one piece at the scene and another in a bag recovered from Bhagat, as well as torn clothes and pieces of glass stained with blood.

Bhagat was sentenced to undergo ‘rigorous’ imprisonment for life and to pay fines of 60,000 rupees.

Danielle’s mother, Andrea Brannigan, Danielle’s sister Joleen McLaughlin Brannigan and Danielle’s best friend Louise McMenamin were in the court in India when the trial came to a close.

On her eighth anniversary last month, her family said that Danielle’s tragic death has had a monumental influence on the community of Goa and the legal system.

“Danielle changed Goa just like she changed every person she ever met’s life. In Goa, she was the first foreigner to have her murderer arrested the first day and have him convicted,” they said.
