Shock after “disgraceful” dumping incident at Inishowen beauty spot

An Inishowen Councillor has labelled a dumping incident at a popular beauty spot in the region as “disgraceful”.

Councillor Terry Crossan highlighted the large dumping incident via social media after receiving a number of reports about the matter from members of the public yesterday.

The incident occurred at Grania’s Gap Loop, which is well-frequented by visitors and locals alike – especially now with such good weather and a Bank Holiday weekend approaching.

A large amount of discarded building materials were dumped at the entrance to the gate of the Grania’s Gap Loop.

Some of the materials left dumped included masonry and bricks, as well as large pieces of plastic and shards of wood.

While Donegal County Council crews will clear the site, Cllr Crossan has hit out at the deliberate act.

“It is absolutely a disgrace that this type of behaviour is happening on a daily basis,” Cllr Crossan said.

“I would urge anybod who sees anything happening like what we’re experiencing here to give any information to the Gardaí or myself.”

“This is absolutely a disgrace and it can’t go on.”

SOS after Biddys O’Barnes beloved toucan is stolen from famous bar

One of Donegal’s best-known pubs, Biddys O’Barnes, has put out an SOS after its beloved toucan bird was stolen.

The beloved Guinness toucan, which is usually found in the shed in Biddys, has disappeared.

The bad news (for the thief) is that the robbery has been caught on camera.

But the good news is that the people in Biddys are so nice they simply want their bird returned to its rightful place.

A spokesperson for the bar said they are willing to forgive and forget if the toucan is retuned!

“Someone’s decided to borrow our beloved Guinness toucan — usually found in the shed at Biddys. He’s been a part of the pub for many years and we’d really love to see him back where he belongs.

“Yes, we have cameras — but we’d much rather he was just returned, no questions asked. He was happy here, minding his own business. Let’s get him home.”

So if it was you who pinched the toucan, you know what to do.

Man admits stabbing during robbery at Ballybofey house

A man has admitted his part in a stabbing that left a man in Ballybofey with possible life-changing injuries.

Tristan McAteer has tendered a signed plea of guilty over the incident on October 16, 2024 in Ballybofey.

The 26-year-old, of no fixed abode, has been charged with assault causing harm and with theft.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to McAteer being sent forward on a signed plea to the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian advised the court that McAteer was taking the option of a signed plea. McAteer confirmed his signature to Judge Éiteáin Cunningham when he was brought from prison to Letterkenny District Court.

Judge Cunningham made an order returning McAteer to the Circuit Court on a signed guilty plea.

The alibi warning was given to McAteer.

Mr Dorrian told the court that bail has been voluntarily revoked by his client.

Legal aid was granted to Mr Dorrian and one legal counsel was assigned in the matter.

A previous sitting of the court heard that a man has “very possibly” been left with life-changing injuries following the incident at a property on Navenny Street at around 9pm on October 16.

McAteer was charged that he assaulted one Stephen Doherty causing him harm. The charge is Contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

The accused was also charged that on the same date and at the same location he did steal property – a 50 inch television, a Playstation 4 console and controller and a portable speaker – which was the property of Stephen Doherty.

The charge is Contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001.

A co-accused in the case, Nadia Blake, a 25-year-old of Booragh, Ramelton, was granted bail in October when she was brought before a special sitting of the court charged with the same offences in relation to the same incident.

Blake was granted bail on condition that she reside at her home address, that she stay out of Ballybofey and Stranorlar, sign on three times a week at Letterkenny Garda Station and have no contact with Mr Doherty.

Solicitor for Blake, Mr Rory O’Brien, told Letterkenny District Court this week that his client is currently in hospital and her case was adjourned to May 12 for the service of a book of evidence.

Donegal man to take on charity Inishowen 100 challenge – from darkness into light!

A Donegal man is set to take on the gruelling Inishowen 100 course – during Pieta’s Darkness into Light.

Paul Doherty will tackle the unique challenge to raise money for the suicide awareness charity in his own way.

On the same night that thousands around the country will do the Darkness into Light walk for Pieta, Paul will set off on his 100 mile endurance challenge.

The idea has been on the table for some time, with Paul being based in the UK and the logistical and safety requirements of taking on the challenge solo causing some delays.

But now ultramarathon enthusiast Paul has had his plans confirmed just in time for Darkness into Light 2025.

“For years, I’ve had a deep passion for ultramarathons, pushing my limits in endurance events across different places,” Paul said.

“But after three years of planning and preparing—along with incredible support from local Garda and Pieta House management—I’ve decided it’s time to bring this challenge home.”

“On May 9th, 2025, I’ll take on the Inishowen 100 route non-stop, from the Diamond, Carndonagh at 6pm running through the night into May 10th commencing on an anticlockwise route.”

The Inishowen 100 route that Paul is taking on for Darkness into Light and Pieta.

“This is more than just a personal test of endurance—it’s a way to shine a light on the lifesaving work Pieta House does. The more conversations I’ve had with Pieta, the more I’ve realized just how much they need our support now more than ever.”

“Through discussions with Pieta representatives and the Garda, we decided this was the right time to make it happen. Their guidance has been invaluable in ensuring both safety and impact.”

“If you can, please donate—every bit goes directly to Pieta House, helping them continue their essential work. Let’s make a difference together.”

Donegal could get the “group of death” in All-Ireland group phase as draw made

Win or lose in the Ulster Championship Final against Armagh in two weeks’ time – Donegal are set for a tough draw in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship group phase.

Should they repeat last year’s Ulster title success, Donegal would be placed in Group 1 alongside the runner up in Connacht between Galway and Mayo – and two of their fiercest provincial rivals in fellow Ulster sides Tyrone and Cavan.

However, defeat in the Ulster Final won’t give Jim McGuinness’ side any easier of a draw – in fact a loss to Armagh would see Donegal placed in the dreaded “group of death” in the draw, Group 4.

It sees the losing side in Ulster play the winners between Galway and Mayo in Connacht, as well as Donegal and Derry.

The full group phase draw is below:

Group 1: Ulster winners (Armagh/Donegal), Connacht runner-up (Galway/Mayo), Tyrone, Cavan

Group 2: Munster winners (Kerry/Clare), Leinster runner-up (Meath/Louth), Roscommon, Cork

Group 3: Leinster winners (Meath/Louth), Munster runner-up (Kerry/Clare), Monaghan, Down

Group 4: Connacht winners (Galway/Mayo), Ulster runner-up (Armagh/Donegal), Dublin, Derry

Donegal hits 23 degrees but unlikely to break April temperature record

Donegal is basking in April sunshine with the county having already reached a sweltering 23 degrees.

However, it is unlikely that any warm weather records will be broken locally today.

Donegal does hold the record for the warmest temperature ever recorded in April.

That was back in 1984 when the highest weather recorded in April hit a stunning 25.8 degrees.

The bad news however, is that more settled weather is on the way and it may not be filled with sunshine.

Aoife Keeley of Met Eireann said the May bank holiday weekend is going to remain good, but just not as warm as we are having it now.

“Generally, a lot of dry weather on the cards, right through the bank holiday. The only thing is things are going to feel a little bit cooler.”

She continued: “By Friday, all that warmer air will have gone, so temperatures will fall back to about the mid-to-high teens for Friday and the bank holiday weekend, it’s still actually probably going to be warmer than normal for many parts of the country, and with the benefit of of the sunshine, it’s going to feel quite warm, still, just not as warm as it will feel today.”

Tory Islanders still awaiting new ferry – SEVEN years after it was promised

$

A new ferry to service the people of Tory Island is still not in place – seven years after it was proposed.

In 2018, the people of Tory Island in Donegal voted to accept proposals presented by independent mediator Pól Ó Gallachóir on behalf of the Department of the Gaeltacht.

Some of the objectives in the proposals were fulfilled, such as new cranes and shelters on Tory Island’s pier and at Machaire Rabhartaigh’s pier on the mainland.

However, two significant objectives that were promised in the proposals that have never been fulfilled yet.

They include a new ferry boat for the island and a feasibility study carried out on the pier at Machaire Rabhartaigh.

The Department of Rural and Community Development provided funding of almost €102,000 to Donegal County Council in 2022 to carry out a feasibility study on the pier in Machaire Rabhartaigh.

The Department have confirmed that they are waiting for the results and recommendations of that study from the County Council, before any further action is taken about the new ferry boat that was promised to the people of Tory Island in 2018.

In a statement, the Department confirmed that they approved “funding of €101,844 to Donegal County Council in 2022 to do a study on the question of the pier to solve the issue concerning the sea bed. The Department is waiting on the results and recommendations of that study from the County Council before any further action is taken about the new boat.”

However, according to information that TG4’s 7LÁ has received from Donegal County Council, the feasibility study has not been commenced, there is no deadline disclosed to finish it, and the funding that had been approved in 2022 has not been drawn down.

In a statement, the Council confirmed that they received funding of €101,844 in 2022 to do a feasibility study at Machaire Rabhartaigh pier.

This work has not been completed yet and “no draw down or progress has been made about the preparation of the feasibility report. An appraisal is needed with regards to a financial process of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

“A draft was prepared to discuss it but no progress has been made due to workload. Therefore, the feasibility study has not commenced, there is no deadline disclosed and the funding that had been approved has not been drawn down.”

In Pól Ó Gallachóir’s proposals, it was stated that a committee, ‘Coiste Bhád Úr Thoraí’, would be established with representatives from the Department of the Gaeltacht and the Islands, from Donegal County Council and Comharchumann Thoraí on it.

The committee would provide proposals to the Department after six months about the new ferry boat for the island and the Department would then have 18 months to provide the new boat.

However, according to information received by 7LÁ under the Freedom of Information Act, there is no record of minutes from this committee, and 7LÁ understands that the committee was never established.

In a statement, Comharchumann forbartha Thoraí confirmed that they “are aware that Donegal County Council does not currently have enough staff, and despite that we always have open communication with them. We are waiting for news from the Department of Rural and Community Development about the progress of the new ferry boat for Tory Island and the upgrade of the piers at Machaire Rabhartaigh and in Tory.”

Speaking on the 7LÁ programme, Pearse Doherty TD, Sinn Féin said “What that government did, we found out within a few months that there was no money set aside for this, that it was an announcement without money and then maybe two years later they put a condition in saying that the work in Machaire Rabhartaigh had to be done first before the ferry boat was built and seven years have passed… I said at the time in 2018 that it was a facade from the Government and that is what is happening in my opinion”.

Man to stand trial for trying to strangle partner with curtain in Donegal home

A man will stand trial for allegedly strangling a woman while covering her mouth and nose with a curtain in her County Donegal home.

The man, who is in his 30s, cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case.

A book of evidence was served on the man, who was brought before Letterkenny District Court.

The man is in custody and was brought to court by prison officers.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented to the accused man being sent forward to the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham made an order returning the man for trial and administered the alibi warning. A section 56 order relating to videos of interviews was also made.

Legal aid was granted to the man’s solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, and two legal counsel were assigned in the case.

The alleged offences were committed shortly after the man was released on bail from court.

The man has been charged with a sexual assault and with an assault causing harm. He has also been charged with the false imprisonment of a woman and with the non-fatal strangulation of the same woman.

He is also charged with an assault and another charge of assault causing harm.

The court heard that, on a date in October, Gardai responded to a report of a dispute at a property in Donegal and found the injured party with a mark on her face.

The accused man was highly intoxicated and not forthcoming with any details.

After he was brought to Sligo District Court, the man was released on bail and returned to the same area later that day.

It was alleged that an argument ensued, during which the man put his hand down the woman’s top and touched her breast.

It was claimed that the man threw her onto a bed and, having fallen onto the floor, the woman grabbed the curtain on the way down.

The court was told that the man put his hands around the woman’s neck and covered her mouth and nose with the curtain before punching her repeatedly in the face. After the woman got up, he was alleged to have punched her repeatedly on the stomach.

Photos of the injuries sustained by the woman were previously handed into the court.

The man has been in custody since late October and, while granted bail by the High Court following a decision in the District Court to refuse bail, he has been unable to comply with conditions laid down.

“We can’t take up the High Court bail until we get an address and we can’t get an address until we get out,” Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for the accused, told an earlier court hearing. “It’s a chicken and egg situation.”

The Cara House Family Resource Centre in Letterkenny is to host its second Senior Services Awareness Event.

After the overwhelming success of its inaugural Senior Services Awareness event in February, the centre has announced a second gathering of local support services on Monday the 19th May, from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

This community-centred event aims to continue raising awareness about the vital services available to seniors and other community members right on their doorstep.

“Our goal is not only to inform people of the support available, but also to foster a spirit of collaboration among service providers to ensure no one falls through the cracks.”

Attendees can expect to meet a wide range of organizations offering services in areas such as health, social care, mental well-being, senior engagement, and community development. The event is free and open to all.

Donegal celebrates 30 years of Bealtaine with month-long festival of art, music, and community

Donegal County Council officially launched the 2025 Donegal Bealtaine Festival on Tuesday 29th April at Buncrana Library, marking the 30th anniversary of Ireland’s national celebration of arts and creativity as we age.

Donegal has proudly been part of Bealtaine for 28 of those years, and this milestone year features the festival’s most ambitious and wide-reaching programme to date.

Speaking at the launch, the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr Niamh Kennedy celebrated the festival’s growth and importance in the cultural life of the county.

She said “Bealtaine is about creativity, connection, and community. It’s about lifting up our older people, showcasing their talents, and ensuring culture and creativity are accessible to all, wherever they live.”

This year’s programme puts a special spotlight on local talent, with artists such as Bernie Wilson (painting workshops), Grainne McCool (creative writing), and Paddy Donoghue (poetry writing) leading creative sessions.

Meanwhile, music fans can look forward to performances from legends like Philomena Begley, Ray Lynam, Ralph McTell, Genticorum, and local favourite Patsy Cavanagh.

The festival also offers a rich variety of talks and experiences – from sound bath workshops and intergenerational storytimes, to a biodiversity talk on Donegal’s sea life, and events that explore sustainability and memory.

A special exhibition, Mná na nGall – Donegal Women 1922–1980, at the Donegal County Museum shines a light on the powerful stories and achievements of women across six transformative decades.

Those attending the launch were captivated by a performance from Maura Logue, who brought her acclaimed one-woman show ‘Nora Gallagher’ to Buncrana Library. The performance offered a nostalgic and lively glimpse into a key part of Donegal’s social and cultural history, blending story, humour and music in a way that perfectly reflects the spirit of Bealtaine.

“Bealtaine doesn’t live in a gallery or a concert hall alone – it’s all around us,” said Sinead Noonan, Donegal Bealtaine coordinator.

“It means you don’t have to go far to feel connected – to hear a poem, to see an exhibition, to tap your feet to a live tune, or even to try your own hand at something creative. That’s what makes celebrating Bealtaine in Donegal so special – culture doesn’t sit on a pedestal here, it lives in the community.”

You can view the full programme of events planned by picking up a Donegal Bealtaine brochure in your local library or cultural venue.

The programme and booking details are also available on our website www.donegalculture.ie or by phoning (074) 917 5384.

Déanann Dún na nGall 30 Bliain de Bhealtaine a cheiliúradh le Féile Mhíosa na hEalaíne, an Cheoil agus an Phobail
Sheol Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall Féile Bealtaine Dhún na nGall 2025 go hoifigiúil Dé Máirt, an 29 Aibreán i Leabharlann Bhun Cranncha, mar chomóradh 30 bliain ar cheiliúradh náisiúnta na hÉireann ar na healaíona agus ar an chruthaitheacht agus muid ag dul in aois. Is cúis bhróid do Dhún na nGall a bheith mar chuid de Bhealtaine le 28 bliain anuas, agus tá an clár is uaillmhianaí agus is forleithne go dtí seo le feiceáil sa bhliain chinniúnach seo.
Agus í ag labhairt ag an seoladh, rinne Cathaoirleach Chomhairle Contae Dhún na nGall, an Comhairleoir Niamh Kennedy, ceiliúradh ar fhás agus ar thábhacht na féile i saol cultúrtha an chontae: “Baineann Bealtaine le cruthaitheacht, le nasc agus leis an phobal. Baineann sé lenár ndaoine scothaosta a ardú, a mbuanna a chur ar taispeáint, agus a chinntiú go bhfuil rochtain ag achan duine ar an chultúr agus ar an chruthaitheacht, cibé áit a bhfuil cónaí orthu.”
I gclár na bliana seo, dírítear aird ar leith ar thallann áitiúil, le healaíontóirí amhail Bernie Wilson (ceardlanna péintéireachta), Grainne McCool (scríbhneoireacht chruthaitheach), agus Paddy Donoghue (scríbhneoireacht filíochta) i gceannas ar sheisiúin chruthaitheacha. Idir an dá linn, is féidir le lucht leanúna an cheoil a bheith ag súil le léirithe ó laochra ceoil mar Philomena Begley, Ray Lynam, Ralph McTell, Genticorum, agus rogha áitiúil na coitiantachta Patsy Cavanagh.
Chomh maith leis sin, cuireann an fhéile réimse leathan cainteanna agus taithí ar fáil — ó cheardlanna folctha fuaime agus scéalaíocht idirghlúine, go caint bhithéagsúlachta ar shaol farraige Dhún na nGall, agus imeachtaí a fhiosraíonn inbhuanaitheacht agus cuimhne. I dtaispeántas speisialta, Mná na nGall — Mná Dhún na nGall 1922-1980, ag Músaem Chontae Dhún na nGall, tugtar léargas ar scéalta cumhachtacha agus ar éachtaí na mban le sé scór bliain anuas.
Bhí na daoine a bhí ag freastal ar an seoladh faoi dhraíocht ag léiriú ó Maura Logue, a thug a seó cáiliúil bean aonair ‘Nora Gallagher’ go Leabharlann Bhun Cranncha. Thug an léiriú spléachadh cumhach bríomhar ar chuid lárnach de stair shóisialta agus chultúrtha Dhún na nGall, ag meascadh scéalta, greann agus ceoil ar bhealach a léiríonn spiorad na Bealtaine go foirfe.
“Níl Bealtaine ina cónaí i ngailearaí ná i halla ceolchoirme amháin — tá sí timpeall orainn ar fad,” a dúirt Sinéad Noonan, comhordaitheoir Bealtaine Dhún na nGall. ” Ciallaíonn sé nach gá duit dul i bhfad chun go mbraithfeá go bhfuil tú nasctha — chun dán a chloisteáil, chun taispeántas a fheiceáil, chun do chosa a chur i dtiúin bheo, nó fiú chun triail a bhaint as rud éigin cruthaitheach. Sin an rud a fhágann go bhfuil ceiliúradh na Bealtaine i nDún na nGall chomh speisialta sin — ní shuíonn an cultúr ar choisbheart anseo, tá cónaí ar an chultúr sa phobal.”
Is féidir leat amharc ar chlár iomlán na n-imeachtaí atá beartaithe trí bhróisiúr Bealtaine Dhún na nGall a phiocadh suas i do leabharlann áitiúil nó i d’ionad cultúrtha. Tá an clár ar fáil freisin ar ár suíomh gréasáin www.donegalculture.ie nó trí ghlaoch ar (074) 917 5384.

Donegal U20s suffer heartache after extra-time defeat to Tyrone in Ulster Final

Donegal U20s suffered heartache at Owenbeg this evening when they were finally edged out after extra-time by All-Ireland Champions Tyrone.

But for a brilliant save by Tyrone goalkeeper Conan McGarvey from a Conor McCahill effort, it could have been all so different.

Paul Devlin’s side eventually pipped Donegal by two points on a scoreline on 1-19 to 2-14 in favour of the Red Hand men.

But it was 80 minutes of high drama which could have seen either team take the Ulster title.

The teams finished level at 1-9 a piece after 60 minutes.

But it was Tyrone who came out the brighter and notched up an impressive seven points including three two-pointers.

However, Seanan Carr gave Donegal some hope when he raised the green flag.

Tyrone always seemed to keep that bit of distance between themselves and their rivals, however.

Ineed there were four points between the sides in the second period of extra time and Tyrone looked like they had it wrapped up.

Donegal dug in with a Shane Callaghan two pointer and also a free.

There was some serious head-scratching when Donegal were penalised for the three up rule leaving McCullagh to point for Tyrone and leave them two points clear.

Donegal threw the kitchen sink at it and but for McGarvey’s close-range save, Donegal may well have been the new Ulster champions.

A man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman 35 times in Co Donegal.

The accused, who is now aged in his 50s, appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with the litany of alleged sexual offences.

He is charged that on dates in the 1980s, at various locations in Co Donegal, he raped the woman.

The accused cannot be named at this stage to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

The charges are all Contrary to Section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act, 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act, 1981.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented for the accused to go forward for trial at the next sitting of the Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham was told that Gardai had no objection to bail.

However, a range of bail conditions were imposed on the accused man including that he stay at a named address, have no contact whatsoever with the alleged injured party and be of good behaviour.

He was also ordered not to leave the jurisdiction before informing Detective Garda Eimear Hassett.

The case was adjourned to June 16th for the service of a book of evidence.

Planning application lodged for NEW shop for Creeslough

A planning application has been lodged for a brand new shop consisting of a convenience store, deli and off-license in the village of Creeslough.

The village currently only has one general store which was erected in the wake of the tragedy which hit the village in October, 2022 which killed ten people and injured many more.

The village’s original shop was the Applegreen Service Station which was completely destroyed in a huge blast.

Controversy erupted recently after planning was granted by Donegal County Council to Vivo Shell Ltd for a redeveloped service station on the same site on which the huge blast occurred.

A number of families of those who were killed or injured in the tragedy have now appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanala.

They claim the redeveloped site is disrespectful to their deceased loved ones.

They say they are also challenging the granting of planning on grounds of trauma and because a criminal case into the cause of the huge explosion is still ongoing.

The families claim the construction of a new building on the same site as the one on which they perished is an insult to their memories.

The proposed new plan includes the erection of ten steel pillars to remember those who died.

But the families claim that this is “incredibly insensitive, cruel, callous and cold” as many of the dead were killed by steel and concrete.

Now a new application has been lodged by a local businessman to construct a new shop on a new site at the opposite end of the village.

The proposed shop, on the village’s Main Street, is opposite the temporary, prefabricated building which was erected in the wake of the October 7th, 2022 blast.

The proposed new shop is also close to the local church, school and HSE Centre.

The new two-storey building will consist of a convenience store, a deli and kitchen, an off-licence, staff area, external toilets, fuel storage area and car parking.

The applicant is local resident and businessman Conrad Gibbons.

Mr Gibbons told Donegal Daily it has always been his intention to develop this site, given its prime location in the centre of Creeslough village.

He added that locals have encouraged him to develop the site for almost 20 years now.

Work on a greenfield site on which the proposed new store would be built has already commenced with a number of trees cleared in recent weeks.

A decision on the appeal by the Creeslough families to An Bord Pleanala over the Applegreen Service Station site is expected to be delivered within 18 weeks of the appeal being lodged which was on March 10th last.

Ten people lost their lives in the Creeslough explosion on the afternoon of October 7th, 2022 including Robert Garwe and his five-year-old daughter Shauna Flanagan-Garwe; Catherine O’Donnell and her 13-year-old son James Monaghan; Jessica Gallagher; Martin McGill; James O’Flaherty; Martina Martin; Hugh Kelly; and 14-year-old Leona Harper.

Ireland has provisionally recorded its highest-ever temperature for the month of April, with a toasty 25.9°C observed in Galway yesterday afternoon.

The reading, taken at the Athenry weather station on Wednesday, April 30th, sets a new national record for the month.

The new figure narrowly overtakes the record set in Donegal over four decades ago.

The previous national highest temperature for April was 25.8°C, recorded on 26th April, 1984, at the weather station in Glenties.

Today will remain warm – but not as sweltering as Wednesday. We’ll see highs of 13 to 17 degrees and a sharp dip overnight with temperatures dropping to 3 to 8 degrees.

The outlook for the Bank Holiday weekend is dry, mild and good spells of sunshine.

More power sought for councillors after 100% Redress Party walk-out

Donegal Deputy Charles Ward has said that county councillors should have more power at local level.

On Monday, four members of the 100% Redress Party staged a walk-out from the council’s housing meeting in protest over the lack of government action on defective concrete blocks. Councillors expressed frustration over the lack of any confirmation that the Housing Minister will be visiting Donegal.

The walk-out was raised in Dáil Éireann yesterday by Deputy Charles Ward who said that there is a lack of engagement on housing at council level.

The Donegal Deputy said: “The lack of action by the Council and by the Minister for Housing on housing issues in Donegal, particularly on the defective concrete crisis, is extremely frustrating.”

He stated: “There is a complete disconnect between the Department of Housing in Dublin and Donegal. It is clear to me that the government is too far removed from this issue.”

The 100% Redress Party TD has called on the government to expand the remit of local authorities and give more power to county councillors.

Deputy Ward said: “Decisions being made at local level, regarding regional issues, such as defective concrete, should be made by elected representatives in the area, and not by government appointed staff. County councillors should serve as decision makers, not be forced to act as opposition in their own councils.”

Donegal has received a tourism boost after Rossnowlagh beach was named among the best in the world!

Rossnowlagh stands as the only Irish entry on the prestigious global ranking by Corona.

Corona celebrated the 100-year anniversary of its beer and association with the beach by announcing its definitive list of the top 100 beaches in the world to visit.

The guide reveals the world’s most iconic beaches where people have travelled for centuries to disconnect from the real world and reconnect with nature.

Rossnowlagh, a surfer’s paradise on the Wild Atlantic Way, is one of the lesser-known spots on the elite list that features just 23 beaches in Europe.

The list was curated by a panel of beach experts, comprised of oceanographers, surfers, free divers, and other nature enthusiasts, who said: “Rossnowlagh is the heart of Ireland’s surf soul. Long, wide, and windswept, this Donegal beach offers gentle breaks and big skies. It’s the kind of place where wetsuits drip dry on fences and time is measured in tide shifts. It’s a local favorite with a loyal following, welcoming beginners and seasoned longboarders alike. You’ll find hot tea after a cold session, sea mist over rolling dunes, and that quiet, unspoken magic you only get in places shaped by weather and held together by community.”

Rossnowlagh was home to Ireland’s first surf club, started in the 1960s decades before ‘cold water surf’ became cool. Now you can ride a wave, rinse off in the rain and warm up with chips by the rise.
