After a hugely popular event earlier this year, The Health Store Turkey is returning to Letterkenny this Saturday, May 31st, for a second free consultation day — offering support and expert advice to anyone considering weight loss surgery, dental treatments, or a wide range of medical procedures in Turkey.

The event will run from 10am to 1pm at the Station House Hotel and is open to anyone curious about high-quality, affordable private healthcare abroad.

Local woman Tanya Rasher (pictured), who lost over 17 stone following a gastric sleeve procedure in Turkey, will once again be on hand to share her journey. Tanya’s first-hand experience has already helped many Donegal residents take the next step towards improved health and wellbeing.

Tanya will also appear on Highland Radio today (Wednesday) at 11am as part of the Wellness Wednesday segment with Greg Hughes, where she’ll speak candidly about her transformation and answer questions from listeners.

“We were blown away by the interest and trust shown during our last visit,” said Nihal Terzi, CEO of The Health Store Turkey. “It’s not just about weight loss — we’re seeing huge demand for dental, cosmetic, and orthopaedic treatments too. This event is a chance to speak with our team, ask questions, and meet past patients who’ve been there and come back.”

Services discussed on the day include:

  • Gastric sleeve and bypass surgery
  • Dental implants and smile makeovers
  • Cosmetic procedures and orthopaedic treatments
  • Full travel coordination and aftercare

Booking is free but essential.

Fire engine numbers at Letterkenny station to be determined by business case

The Director of Emergency Services in Donegal has said that the county’s fire service remains fit for purpose while a review takes place at Letterkenny fire station.

The proposed relocation of a recently delivered second water tanker, currently based in Letterkenny, has been deferred until a business case on the operating model of Letterkenny Fire Station is completed.

The business case will assess whether the station should operate as a one or two pump station.

County Councillors have been told that the business case is expected to be concluded by mid-July.

This week, Councillor Gerry McMonagle, Mayor of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, called for meaningful discussions between management and firefighters in the county service during the process of implementing the national WRC agreement.

As part of the changes, strong concerns emerged that Letterkenny could be downgraded to a one-pump station, which was strongly opposed by firefighters.

Letterkenny firefighters have since been offered the option to revert to their pre-Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) crewing model.

Cllr McMonagle said that this would be a backwards step.

“The strike action was about the work life balance and getting away from the pre-WRC crewing model,” said Cllr McMonagle told the council at a plenary meeting this week.

“Effectively what we have done now, for a town the size of letterkenny and the hinterland, there is a feeling that we are undersaffed, and the ‘6 on, 6 off’ model needs to be updated, there needs to be further recruitment done to ensure that there is enough fire personnel when a shout goes out.”

Cllr McMonagle called on the council to listen to and work with the experienced personnel.

“We had a meeting recently with firefighters in Letterkenny and, in some instances, there were only two firefighters on the second pump going out,” he said.

“They are very concerned that if there was a major fire in Letterkenny on a daytime shift when only six arrive and the cover has to come from Milford or Stranorlar, that there will be insufficient numbers there to deal with it initially.”

Cllr McMonagle called on the council to look at recruitment now, taking into account the growing population of Letterkenny and its hinterland.

“It’s incumbent on management to be looking at future recruitment, even if we were to recruit an extra 10 firefighters tomorrow, between recruitment and training, it would take 16 months before they are on the job,” he said.

Cllr McMonagle added: “It’s good that nothing is going to happen at Letterkenny fire station until the business case is completed and presented, and I hope that it is July, but if the outcome of that is that more personnel is needed, what are the steps that are going to be taken then?”

Donegal County Council’s director of emergency services Garry Martin said: “The fire service in the county is fit for purpose and is capable of meeting service demand. It’s well-resourced and well-financed, it has never been subject to restriction in funding.”

Mr Martin said that the current issues have come about as a result of the national WRC agreement, which he said the council is “working through” by recruiting in all stations throughout the county.

Mr Martin has reiterated that there were never any plans or intentions to remove the second Class B appliance from Letterkenny, which continues to be actively used in incident responses.  The Incident Command Unit will remain in-situ.

Mr Martin said that meetings are taking place between Fire Service Management and SIPTU regarding the 2023 WRC Agreement’s implementation. There are also regular communications between the Letterkenny Fire Brigade’s senior officer and the Station Officer.

Woman faces charges over four Rolex watches worth €132,950

A Donegal woman charged with using fake documents to apply for an Irish passport has been further charged over the possession of Rolex watches and a stash of sterling cash.

Gardai believe that the items seized from Bridget McDonagh, including four luxury watches, are the proceeds of criminal conduct.

The case of McDonagh, with an address at Coil an Airgid, Donegal Road, Ballybofey, was before Letterkenny District Court.

Detective Garda Paul Kane gave evidence of further charging McDonagh at 11.50am on May 25, 2025.

The 44-year-old was charged that on November 20, 2025 she was in possession of the proceeds of criminal conduct, to wit, £9,300 in sterling cash, and four Rolex watches, valued at a total of €132,950.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that directions were received and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented for McDonagh to be prosecuted on indictment at the Circuit Court.

The DPP further consented to the accused to be sent forward on a signed guilty plea.

McDonagh was brought before a previous court sitting having been charged in relation to an incident at the Irish Passport Office, Balbriggan, Dublin, on August 23, 2023.

She was charged that she did, in connection with an application for the issue of a passport, provide false information or documents which were false or misleading.

McDonagh was represented by solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham adjourned the matter until July 1 for the service of a book of evidence.

McDonagh was remanded on continuing bail. Previously, she was released on bail on condition that she surrender her passport, not apply for a new or duplicate passport, not leave the island of Ireland and provide a phone number to Gardai on which she must be contactable 24/7.

Redress Party offers to fund live streaming of defective blocks meetings

The 100% Redress Party has offered to pay to cover the costs of live-streaming meetings of the Defective Concrete Block Committee as a matter of public interest.

Councillor Tomás Seán Devine said that it’s “only fair and right” that the public can watch how they are being represented by the councillors who elected them.

Cllr Devine raised a motion on the matter with the council this week, stating that councillors have come under criticism when their discussions are held off-camera.

Speaking at Monday’s plenary meeting, which was streamed live, Cllr Devine said: “Surely it’s nothing to do with financial reasons because we have cameras here. We want these meetings streamed online. Our party’s even offered to pay if it is for financial reasons.

“There are thousands and thousands of defective block homeowners that want information from this council and I think it’s very simple – that these meetings are streamed. We are doing it today, why can it not be used for a DCB committee?”

While workshops are always held in committee, there were calls for further discussion on the implications of live streaming non-plenary meetings such as the DCB committee.

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle said: “We need to discuss this. Once something is streamed live, we are not in control of what anybody says. I think we need further discussion on it and the terms of reference and how much it will cost the council.”

“If we did go live, there would be more workshops than meetings,” added Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul Cannning.

Cllr Devine was told that the executive will look into the options and prepare a paper on the pros and cons of the live streaming, which will be brought before the corporate policy group.

Meanwhile, members of the public can continue to attend meetings in person.

I am happy for a discussion, but something needs to be done urgently,” said Cllr Devine.

Chris Burgess hailed as Donegal’s new voice in UX-driven product innovation

Donegal’s vibrant tech landscape has just gained a powerful advocate for customer and user-driven innovation.

Chris Burgess, a fractional product leader providing part-time product strategy and delivery, has over a decade of experience working with global tech pioneers. He has recently relocated to the region and is planting deep roots with a clear mission: to make Donegal a leader in technology innovation.

“My experience working with extended reality has provided me with a snapshot into a wider problem within product development – the prioritisation of advancing technology capabilities over addressing customer needs. As a fractional product leader, my approach centres on delivering data-driven value, helping companies move beyond assumptions.”

Chris has a long history working in the XR, or ‘eXtended Reality’, industry — a broad term covering technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). For years, Chris worked at the forefront of this technology in the UK, starting at the AR startup Aurasma in London (later acquired by HP) and then leading product strategy at the innovative interaction company Ultraleap in Bristol.

Now based in Donegal, Chris is leveraging his experience with innovative tech to help businesses innovate thoughtfully, ensuring they prioritise their customers and users while preparing for the future.

“I’ve seen first-hand how fast innovation can outpace human needs. As a fractional product leader, I now help businesses navigate the challenge of aggregating and analysing fragmented customer insights to truly understand their users. And if I can encourage businesses to adopt XR in a way that’s meaningful, sustainable, and aligned with their long-term vision along the way, that’s even better!”

Bridging the Digital and Physical Divide

While Chris started out with a mission to help close the gap between emerging technology and its practical application, he quickly noticed that connecting tech to real-world problems is a much wider challenge. Drawing from experience in product development, strategic collaboration, and human-computer interaction, Chris provides fractional product strategy and UX expertise to help companies unlock their potential. The focus is on helping companies evolve the technologies they are promoting to serve the people they are selling to — by always keeping UX in mind.

“New tech is exciting, innovative, and a rewarding space to work in, but simply expecting people to want to use technology because it’s new isn’t enough,” Chris explained. “It needs to support KPIs, enhance existing workflows, and engage users meaningfully. That’s where I come in — helping businesses avoid common pitfalls and focus on lasting value.”

Donegal: A Strategic and Surprising Base for Tech

While Donegal might not be the first location that comes to mind when talking about cutting-edge tech, Chris sees that as part of its advantage.

“Moving here has brought a better work-life balance, clarity of focus, and a deeper appreciation for meaningful work,” he said. “The community support, mentoring, and events I’ve discovered through Local Enterprise Office, Donegal 2040’s Alpha Innovation, and the ii have been outstanding. There’s a quiet but powerful network here, and it’s growing.”

Chris recently took part in the Donegal 2040 Alpha Innovation Bootcamp in Letterkenny, joining 12 other aspiring entrepreneurs. There, he explored how companies struggle to align new products and features with customer and user needs — and began developing a new product idea that could help solve this challenge at scale.

A Vision for Donegal and Beyond

XR remains a personal passion for Chris. During this year’s Enterprise Week, he highlighted the global shift toward a new era of computing — from AI-powered smart glasses to immersive headsets replacing computer screens — and emphasised the enormous opportunity this presents.

“XR can make geographical barriers disappear. Imagine meeting your team virtually, each of you wearing a headset, with natural body and facial movements mirrored by your avatars. Intelligent audio even makes it easier to hear teammates nearby compared to those across the room. That’s the reality of XR technology today — and it’s only going to get better with companies like Apple and Google taking it seriously.”

Chris believes Donegal, with the right strategy and investment in promoting this technology, could attract more people to live and work in the region. His vision is expansive: to support businesses in deploying real-world XR solutions, grow thought leadership in the space, help shape a vibrant regional tech economy, and advocate for smarter, more inclusive adoption of XR across Ireland and Europe.

If your business is ready to transform fragmented customer feedback into clear product direction, Chris invites direct inquiries. Discover how his fractional product strategy and UX consulting can deliver impactful results.

For anyone intrigued by the potential of XR and curious about how emerging interfaces might impact their industry, Chris is eager to connect for an informal discussion.

At a recent schools promotional event the 2024 Teacher Award winners John McFeely (Primary) and Paddy Carr (Secondary) both emphasised the importance of getting nominations in now as the school year draws to a close before the summer break. Awards Chairperson Grace Boyle also stressed that it is not just about the achievements as a significant weighting is also given to the level of participation in sport generally in schools. “We would ask Principals and those involved in sports in schools to look at what has happened from September 2024 and get the details jotted down now to submit to us when it is fresh in their minds. Please send your nominations to  info@donegalsportsstarawards.ie. We are also asking that they attach any relevant images and video footage” Ms Boyle said.

Around 30 employees of Carelon in Donegal have been hit with devastating job losses after the company announced its departure from Ireland.

The international health technology company today confirmed plans to close operations at its base in Limerick, resulting in 300 job losses.

Up to 30 of the 300 jobs are based out of Carelon’s north west hub in Letterkenny, with many of the employees working remotely.

A statement from the company said: “After carefully considering alternatives and conducting a consultation process with employee representatives, we have made the difficult decision that we will cease our operations of Carelon Global Solutions Ireland Limited.

“The process to close operations will occur over the course of the next several months, and we expect it to be completed by the end of 2025.

“We greatly appreciate the work and dedication from associates in Ireland over the past few years and are committed to supporting them during this time.”

For months, staff had feared job losses after Carelon’s parent company, Elevance Health, started a review into their business in Ireland.

IDA Ireland hailed Carelon setting up its Limerick HQ in 2021 as a boost to the local economy, and a sign that Ireland has become a destination for “top talent and investment in the healthcare sector”.

In 2023, the company, which was formerly known as Legato, won the overall award for best firm at the Limerick Chamber Regional Business awards, it was also named as the best employer.

A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to drug-dealing in Letterkenny.

Victor Adejuyibe admitted drug-related offences when he appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

The accused pleaded guilty to four counts, which Ms Fiona Crawford BL, barrister for the State, said were on a “without prejudice basis”.

Adejuyibe pleaded guilty to engaging in the possession of proceeds of criminal conduct on August 16, 2022 at Meadowbank, Long Lane, Letterkenny namely an amount of €6,020 in cash, while knowing that or believing that or being reckless as to whether or not the money was the proceeds of criminal conduct. RTE documentary series to explore fascinating history of Glebe House

The iconic Glebe House and Gallery in Gartan will be explored in the final episode of the ‘Legacy’ series on RTE One this Sunday.

Legacy is a four-part series featuring fifteen of Ireland’s national historic properties.

The final episode is themed on the art of the portrait and takes viewers to the Glebe House to celebrate the work of Derek Hill.

Built in 1828, the Glebe House was bought by British landscape artist and portrait painter Derek Hill in 1954, and became his home and studio.

Hill was a talented and sought after artist who painted prominent figures such as the Prince of Wales and Noël Coward and also the local Donegal people he befriended.

The Glebe House also became home to Hill’s eclectic collection of art, furniture and artefacts from his world travels, including works by Picasso and Jack B. Yeats. Keen that future generations would be able to enjoy his collection, Hill donated his house and its contents to the nation in 1987, and it became a museum and art gallery.

Derek Hill was made an honorary Irish citizen in 1999, the year before he died.

Richard Noble, photographer and friend of Derek Hill will be contributing to the segment.

Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin Castle and Kilkenny Castle will also be featured in this Sunday’s episode.

The National Historic Properties portfolio is one of the most interesting property portfolios in Ireland.

Owned by the State, and managed by the Office of Public Works, it’s a fascinating and diverse collection of castles, country houses, memorial sites and gardens, consisting of thirty two historic properties that are open to the public.

Many of these properties were given to the State as gifts, some were bought by the State, and others, including Áras an Uachtaráin and Dublin Castle, came into the State’s possession when Ireland gained independence in 1922.

LEGACY is produced and directed by David Hare for InProductionTV and made with the support of the Office of Public Works.

More than 200 travel on Raphoe Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes

A group of 211 people travelled from the Raphoe Diocese to Lourdes last week to experience the shrine of Our Lady.

Fr Stephen Gorman, pilgrimage director, in the early hours of Monday morning, 19th May, led 34 young people from 8 different secondary schools of our diocese on pilgrimage to the shrine at Lourdes where our lady appeared to little Bernadette Soubirous. They were accompanied by 10 youth leaders. In total 211 people travelled from the Raphoe diocese which included 18 assisted pilgrims, 34 youth, 63 pilgrimage staff, 9 priests, and 87 pilgrims.

Fr Gorman, pilgrimage director, said that it was a great honour and privilege for him to return this year, as Raphoe diocesan pilgrimage director, taking assisted pilgrims, who are the “royalty” of Lourdes. His prayer for all the pilgrims was that “they would open their hearts and souls to our lady Mary and bring to Mary all that is going on in their lives.”

Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, diocesan administrator, was spiritual director of the pilgrimage. He was joined by Bishop Emeritus Philip Boyce along with the priests of the diocese: Archdeacon Willie Mc Menamin, Canon Dinny Mc Gettigan, Fr Michael Mc Keever, Fr Johnny Moore, Fr Brendan Ward, and Fr Anthony Hartnett.

The 18 assisted pilgrims were cared for by Professor Ken Mulpeter, Dr Godfrey Aleong, and Dr Kathy Gallagher, and were assisted by a wonderful team of medical staff.
Dominic Carr led 10 youth leaders with the 34 youth from all over the county. They all had a wonderful time, established new friendships, and they were overwhelmed by their unique experience of the beautiful shrine to our lady. They supported the care of the assisted pilgrims with whom they established a great bond.

Everyone takes something home from Lourdes and this is not confined to Lourdes water, candles, or blessed religious objects. Every pilgrim brings a unique life experience to Lourdes and every pilgrim consequently has a unique experience of Lourdes that cannot be put into words. The experience of the eucharistic procession, the torch light procession, mass at the grotto, the water gesture, or just spending some quiet time alone with our lady in front of the shrine in the quietness of night, makes Lourdes a special place to find healing and strength to deal with all the many challenges we face in life.

After closing mass on Thursday, Fr Gorman commended all the youth while they were on pilgrimage, and how they showed great care and compassion to the assisted pilgrims. They were a fantastic group of young men and women and it’s hoped, with the will of God, they will have taken many graces and blessings from their experience. Fr Gorman also gave a heartfelt thanks to all the staff who contributed so much to making it possible to care for the assisted pilgrims and youth members and for making their time on the pilgrimage a very heartwarming experience.

The assisted pilgrims enjoyed a party and a sing song in the Accueil Notre Dame along with the staff on their final night in Lourdes. Monsignor Kevin Gillespie thanked Fr Gorman after the closing mass for all his hard work and dedication to the pilgrimage and for all the time and effort that he put into making it such a wonderful experience for all involved.

Father-of-four John Parke, 42, appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court where he was charged with a Section 3 assault on Gary Gibson.

Parke admitted the attack and previously offered his victim a token of his remorse of €1,000 which Judge John Aylmer said “borders on an insult.”

The accused man returned to court where he increased his offer of remorse to his victim to €8,000.

The court had heard Mr Gibson and Parke had been drinking at the Diamond Bar in Raphoe at approximately 11.30pm on August 24th, 2019 when the incident occurred.

Prosecutor Ms Fiona Crawford said Mr Gibson had been in the bar when Parke arrived and said to Mr Gibson “get the fuck out of the bar.”

Mr Gibson then turned to Parke and told him he was finishing his half pint of alcohol when Parke suddenly struck his victim with a closed fist to the face.

Mr Gibson was cleaned up and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital before being transferred to Sligo Hospital and then on to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry for treatment.

The court heard that Mr Gibson’s right eye socket was displaced by 5 millimetres, that he was off work for three weeks, had headaches for six weeks after the incident and that he still has a a”constant drooping” in his eye.

He said he was thankful to the doctors at Sligo Hospital who managed to save the sight in his right eye.

Garda William Powell, the investigating member, said there had been no CCTV in the bar and nobody present was willing to make a statement.

A victim impact statement on behalf of the victim said he was still afraid when he went out socially and was nervous in case he met Parke and that he always had his wife ‘on standby’ to collect him as he is afraid to walk home.

Parke made a voluntary cautioned memo of interview to Gardai on October 2nd, 2019 in which he admitted to meeting Gary Gibson in the bar and saying to him “what’s wrong with you?”

Parke said there was not a lot said between the pair but there was some “pushing and shoving” but that he left and met his wife before going home.

When the allegation that he punched Mr Gibson was put to him by Gardai, Parke replied “Bullshit, that’s a load of crap, I did not hit him.”

The accused also claimed he could not have punched Mr Gibson as he had cut his hand with a blade a short time earlier and could not make a fist.

However, he later entered a guilty plea to assaulting Mr Gibson.

The court was told that Parke had two historic previous convictions for criminal damage going back to 2004 but none for assault of any nature.

Barrister for Parke, Mr Ciaran Elders, BL, said his client was an active member of the local community and had been involved in training underage sports teams, in various charity events and he knew that he should have walked away on the night in question rather than becoming involved.

He said a probation report into Parke said there had been a slight conflict and that a drink may have spilled onto his trousers and there had been a verbal spat with Mr Gibson but said he had no recollection of punching him.

The probation service also said he was at a low risk of reoffending and that he was suitable for community service and is also very remorseful for what had happened.

Mr Elders added that Parke was a man with a virtually unblemished record and that this incident was totally out of character for him and that there had been no further conflict between the accused and the victim.

He said he had the sum of €1,000 in court by ways of compensation to his victim.

Judge John Aylmer said that this was clearly a very serious assault given the circumstances adding Mr Gibson suffered a very nasty fracture to his cheekbone as he reflected on the victim’s injuries.

He said he placed the incident “very much in the mid range” and one which merited a prison sentence of three years before mitigation.

He added that he entered a plea at the last moment but this did not entitle him to one third off his sentence but credit has to be given for it.

Judge Aylmer said he recognised the fact that Parke was of limited means but that the offer of €1,000 “is bordering on an insult to Mr Gibson.”

Barrister Mr Elders suggested if he had more time but the Judge replied that he “has had an awful lot of time” but said he was still in denial at giving Mr Gibson such a firm blow that he would cause such injuries.

“He has a long way to go to avoid a prison sentence,” added the Judge.

Mr Elders asked if the court had any idea of a figure which it would be satisfied with, to which Judge Aylmer replied “No. He will have to arrive at it himself. It’s not a cattle mart.”

A revised offer of €8,000 was made in court which the accused man’s barrister said was “a huge amount of money for him to raise.”

Mr Elders added that he did not think there was a huge benefit to society by incarcerating Parke saying he was a functioning member of his community and broader society as a whole.

Passing final sentence, Judge John Aylmer said Parke caused a very serious injury to his victim and he placed the assault at the mid range of such incidents meriting a sentence of three years before mitigation.

Judge Aylmer referred to the probation service report which said Parke was deemed a low risk of reoffending, the lack of any major previous convictions as well as a letter from Parke’s partner.

He said it was clear that incarceration would place an extreme burden on the accused man’s family and especially his child with special needs for whom Parke cares for.

The Judge added that the increase from €1,000 to €8,000 for Mr Gibson was a more genuine token of remorse and having regard to his otherwise good character, he proposed to deal with the sentence by way of a non-custodial sentence.

He ordered Parke to do 240 hours community service in lieu of two years in prison on the basis that the money is paid over to Mr Gibson, not as compensation as he may have a future claim for compensation, but as a token of his remorse.

Mr Doherty was a beloved English teacher at the Stranorlar Vocational School and a well-known figure in the Twin Towns.

In a tribute to his passion for stories and prose, Finn Valley College handed out the inaugural Aidan Doherty Poetry Award this week to student Valentyna Yavniuk.

The judges were blown away by the standard of the poetry presented and had to shortlist 7 poems. Shortlisted poets David Franczak, Arven Alli, Caoimhe McCloskey, Alina Kolesnyk, Ava Doherty and Heidi McGonagle Laverty would all have been worthy winners but this year’s winner, for her powerful poem ‘Kills to Forget‘, was Valentyna Yavniuk.

Announcing the inaugural award, a spokesperson from Finn Valley College said: “Aidan is fondly remembered by colleagues and students for being fun loving and mischievous, but also for being a pioneer in the early days of learning support. Aidan was a great support for those from other countries learning English for the first time, students and indeed their families, something which he continued on a voluntary basis, long after his retirement.

“Aidan was instrumental in setting up the first school library in Stranorlar Vocational School, and always encouraged students to enjoy reading and to be brave with creative writing.

“Aidan is also remembered as a great lover and promoter of Gaelic games, it was Aidan who set up and ran the long running Sandy Harper memorial tournament.”

The school community issued thanks to English teacher Mr Freddie Godliman for his support with the inaugural Aidan Doherty Poetry Award.

Cliftonville FC from Belfast had an important away fixture in Donegal at the weekend – to support Presbyterian cleric the Rev Dario Leal as he takes up a new role as minister of Carrigart and Dunfanaghy congregations.

Mr Leal (55) had served as chaplain to Cliftonville and the club’s hierarchy travelled up for the installation service at Carrigart which took place on May 25.

As club patron Jim Boyce, the former senior vice-president of FIFA said, Donegal’s gain is Cliftonville’s loss. He brought greetings to Mr Leal from the north Belfast club’s manager and captain.

Speaking at the service in Carrigart, Mr Boyce (80) said: “In all my football career the most important thing to me was community relations.

“At Cliftonville we have a very mixed team and those lads worship Dario, because his spiritual knowledge is so great but his human knowledge is also great because he brings them all together – it doesn’t matter about religion. Those players all have the greatest respect for Dario.”

Mr Boyce told worshippers he regarded Donegal as “God’s own country” and could claim Donegal antecedents in that his father’s family hailed from Ardara and his mother’s relations were from the Rosses Point.

Some 200 people attended the service which was held to officially install Mr Leal – a native of Chile – into the post. He said he was greatly looking forward to serving the congregations and the wider community in Donegal.

Mr Leal, who will conduct his first services in Dunfanaghy and Carrigart on Sunday June 1, said he, his wife Denise and his four children were excited by the prospect of coming to Co Donegal.

Fifty per cent of Mr Leal’s time is to be devoted to outreach and missional duties, but he told those at the service that he had no fixed plan. He said: “I just want to get on with what the Father is doing in this place and I believe he is doing something. I want people to be bold in their faith.”

Mr Leal, who is moving from First Ballynahinch, first came to Ireland with his wife in 1994 and he subsequently studied and then worked in Belfast, including a church-planting project in north Belfast where he became chaplain to Cliftonville Football Club.

Among clerical guests who attended were Fr Charlie Byrne PP from St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mevagh, Fr Martin Doohan PP from Dunfanaghy, Fr John Joe Duffy CC from Creeslough, Canon David Skuce from Holy Trinity, Dunfanaghy and Rev Chris Moffett from Holy Trinity, Carrigart.

Fr Byrne said he was very happy to be with Mr Leal on this special occasion. He said: “You are coming, Dario, to a most wonderful community and you will be among great people. The three churches here do get on well and through our commitment and witness to Christ we do our best to do a good job. You will have a great ministry here, shepherding your flock and I wish you so well.”

Mr Moffett said the parishes of Mevagh and Fanad were delighted to welcome Mr Leal to the area and looked forward to working with him. He said that in his time in Donegal he had experienced good relationships across all the Christian traditions.

The other speakers wishing Mr Leal well were Tom Morrow from First Ballynahinch, Joy Buchanan representing the congregations of Dunfanaghy and Carrigart, Azman Khairuddin from Journey Community Church in Antrim, a long-time friend of Mr Leal’s, and Rick Hill, secretary of the Presbyterian Church’s Council for Mission in Ireland.

The service was conducted by the Rev Stephen Hibbert, minister of Glendermott Presbyterian Church in Derry, and the current Moderator of Derry & Donegal Presbytery. He said he looked forward to seeing great things being done in the area in the name of God.
