COMMUNITY ALERT: GARDA WARNING AFTER RAID ON SHOP

Gardaí in the County have issued a warning to rural business owners to be vigilant and advised them to carry out an audit of security following an overnight burglary of a shop and filling station in Letirmacaward.Burglars

Business owners are requested to check on the physical security of their premises including doors, windows and roofs to ensure they are capable of withstanding robust attack.

Checks should also be carried out on the operation of intruder alarms and cctv. Intruder alarms should have back up signalling facilities in commercial premises.

This is a basic requirement. CCTV systems should be checked to ensure lenses are clean, focused and tamperproof. Ensure the hard drives for camera systems are secured and not easily accessible. The use of lighting linked to the alarm system will assist cctv to capture quality images in the event of an attack.

Gardaí who are urging people in the community to be vigilant and keep a sharp eye for movement of vehicles late at night or early in the morning in an effort to thwart the movements & activities of organised criminals by contacting the 24/7 Gardaí Station for your area.

Divisional Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Paul Wallace who is based at Letterkenny, said “It is a known and established fact that criminals will target business premises in isolated rural areas at this time of year, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

“The winter weather, darker nights, less movement of traffic on rural roads as people retreat indoors are all elements which contribute to the growth industry at this time of year – crime.”

He added: “Owners of businesses in all areas should also review security in and around their homes. Advice and guidance is available at www.garda.ie / crime prevention. People should not hesitate to make contact with me on 074-91-67161 (direct line- answering service) should they require clarification, advice or information on any aspect of security and this service is free of charge.”

BIG-HEARTED Daniel O’ Donnell will put on his dancing shoes to help a young boy walk for the first time.DanielDancePoster_MIW2W-page-001

The singer will perform at a dance for the first time in 23 years to raise funds for five year old Paul Doherty who has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

It is just over 8 weeks since the launch of the Donegal fundraiser Mammy, I Want to Walk. The fund wants to raise much need money to send 5 year old boy Paul Doherty to America for life changing surgery.

In this short space of time, a staggering amount of money has been raised to support the wish of the young Donegal boy.

Since the fundraiser started, Anne Marie has been sharing the story about her sons wish to walk and how this could be achieved. Donegal got behind her and her son. The Donegal Senior Football GAA Team got behind her and her son.

Now Daniel O’ Donnell is lending his support. Daniel is well known for getting involved in charitable causes both locally and further a field.

Anne Marie Doherty and her son Paul

Anne Marie Doherty and her son Paul

Little Paul’s mother Anne Marie knew it would be a great coup if she could get Daniel O’ Donnell to help her out. With a heavy dousing of Knock holy water & plenty of prayers too, Anne Marie posted a hand written note to Daniel O’ Donnell in Kincasslagh.

She explained that she was arranging a dance in December and hoped that Daniel might be at home to sing a few songs on the night. Daniel O’ Donnell is well known to have a big heart when it comes to supporting those in need.

In the days since that initial contact Daniel O’ Donnell & Anne Marie have been busy organising a very special night to raise funds for young Paul.

Daniel has taken Paul’s story to his heart and promised to be lead act in a fundraising dance at the Villa Rose Hotel, Ballybofey on Sunday 28th December. Daniel explained to Anne Marie that he hasn’t done a dance in over 23 years!

Anne Marie has promised Daniel there will be plenty of room for dancing on the night. Daniel fans will relish this intimate gig with their hero. This will be one of the few opportunities left to see Daniel before he takes an 18-month break from the music business to spend more time with his wife, Majella, who has battled breast cancer.

Anne Marie explains, the goodwill & generosity shown to her and her son have been staggering.

“We have almost €50,000.00 raised to date. I never thought it possible.”

Daniel will be accompanied by Daniel Craig & Grainne Gavigan. Dancing from 10 till late. Tickets available exclusively from Villa Rose Hotel on 074 9132266

Brett McGinty was defeated in controversial circumstances in his Junior European Championship bout against Croatian Mladen Sobjeslavski .

Brett McGinty was left ‘gutted’ following a controversial decision that resulted in his exit at the Junior European Championships.

McGinty was competing against Mladen Sobjeslavski and looked like he was in control of the bout early on.

The St Johnston based boxer looked classy and composed in the opening two rounds and seemed to have won both comfortably.

That sparked a reaction from his opponent Mladen Sobjeslavski and he upped the tempo in the final round.

Sobjeslavski might have shaded the last round as he had to chase it, as it looked as if he’d lost the first two rounds.

There was then shock and surprise when the referee raised the arm of the Croatian fighter Mladen Sobjeslavski.

McGinty looked visibly stunned as did the rest of his back-room team, there was further surprise when the judges scored the contest 3-0 in favour of Sobjeslavski.

MOVILLE U13 GIRLS REACH COUNTY FINAL

The Moville u13 girls are through to the County Final after beating a very good Glenties team in O’Donnell Park on Thursday last. The Moville girls conceded an early goal but they didn’t panic and where soon level when Claire Brown got on the edge of a well measured pass from Niamh McDonald, a second goal from Kate McClenaghan & a couple of great points from Aiobh Faulkner & Breena Diver soon after put Moville in Control.

Niamh McDonald & Danielle McDermott added two more points before Amy Carr slotted home a great individual goal for Glenties to close the gap before half time & but for a couple of great saves from Milly Banks Glenties could have been level at the break.

Two more quick goals for Glenties after the break meant moville had to dig really deep and Kerri Browne got on the end of Niamh Skellys long ball to slot home to ease the pressure.

Clodagh Skelly & Breena Diver where solid at the back & with Erin Coyle & Fiona Mc Laughlin where making it difficult to get near the Moville goal.

Faulkner & McClenaghan slotted over a couple of long range points and Moville where now in total control. Emer Gillen scored a fine point towards the end to seal the victory.

Best for Moville where Breena Diver, Clodagh Skelly, Claire Browne & Niamh Mc Donald Moville now play St. Eunans in the final on Saturday 15th of November good luck girls.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Aoibh Faulkner, Clodagh Skelly, Breena Diver & Niamh Skelly who played for Donegal on Saturday in the Ulster u13 development blitz in Garvaghey.

armed gardaGARDAÍ have arrested two men after a Text Alert scheme in Glenties was triggered following several overnight raids in the town.

More than €2,000 was stolen from the Paper Shop.

A pensioner living on Main Street was also targeted by the thieves, while there were attempted robberies at several other premises.

However Gardaí and local community leaders issued a text alert to the public and two men were later arrested.

It’s understood both suspects are from the North.

A blue Astra car was also seized in the extensive follow-up operation by Gardaí.

Forensic experts are now combing several premises for clues.

“This was a horrible experience for the pensioner and for the owners of business premises but the text alert scheme worked and two men are in custody,” said one local businessman.

“It shows that the community text alert scheme works.”

ST EUNAN’S RECEIVE TIMELY BOOST AHEAD OF ULSTER SFC CLASH WITH ROSLEA

O'Donnell Park in Letterkenny.

O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny will host the Ulster SFC clash between St Eunan’s and Roslea.

St Eunan’s have received a timely boost ahead of their Ulster SFC clash with Fermanagh champions Roslea this Sunday.

The game had been originally been scheduled to be played at Mac Cumhaill Park.

However, St Eunan’s home venue O’Donnell Park meets the criteria for hosting such games so St Eunan’s were able to move the tie to their home pitch.

St Eunan’s defeated local rivals Glenswilly in a low scoring Donegal SFC final on Sunday.

Maxi Curran will be hoping his side can make an impact in the Ulster championship.

St Eunan’s have failed to make an impact in Ulster despite their dominance in Donegal over the last decade.

Glenswilly reached the Ulster decider last year before narrowly losing to Ballinderry.

St Eunan’s will be fancied to overcome Roslea on Sunday, but it will be a very difficult game.

The game gets underway at 2.30pm at O’Donnell Park this Sunday.

DONEGAL PERMITTED TO RESUME COLLECTIVE TRAINING NEXT MONTH

New Donegal manager Rory Gallagher is permitted from gathering his squad together for collective training until December 29th.

New Donegal manager Rory Gallagher is permitted from gathering his squad together for collective training until December 29th.

Donegal will be permitted from resuming collective training until December 29th, after the GAA announced its staggered roster system for inter-county teams.

Donegal, Kerry, Kilkenny and Tipperary are all restricted from resuming collective training until the 29th of December as the four teams reached their respective All-Ireland finals.

The Donegal U21 side is permitted from resuming training until January the 1st, while the Minor team will have to wait until February the 1st.

Inter-county managers have criticized the staggered roster system in the past, and the fact it’s almost impossible to police has drawn severe criticism from some quarters.

Many inter-county teams don’t adhere to the system and carry on with their schedules regardless, although there is heavy fines imposed on any county found guilty of breaking the rules.

Rory Gallagher was appointed as the new Donegal manager on Friday night, and it’s likely his first job will be to discover how many players intend to retire from inter-county football.

There are strong rumours that both Colm McFadden and Rory Kavanagh are set to retire from inter-county football.

Gallagher will be boosted by the news that double All-Star Neil Gallagher is ready to play on for another year at least.

The staggered roster for counties is as follows:

November 15 (teams knocked out in June) – London, Fermanagh, Derry, Offaly, Louth, Westmeath, Waterford, Leitrim (football); Antrim, Laois (hurling)

December 1 (teams knocked out in July) – Antrim, Longford, Wicklow, Wexford, Cavan, Down, Carlow, Tyrone, Limerick, Laois, Roscommon, Clare, Sligo, Tipperary (football); Clare, Offaly, Waterford, Wexford, Dublin (hurling).

December 8 (teams knocked out in August) – Meath, Kildare, Galway, Cork, Armagh, Monaghan, Mayo, Dublin (football); Cork, Limerick (hurling).

December 29 – Donegal, Kerry (football); Kilkenny, Tipperary (hurling

The Donegal Association Dublin have held their AGM in the Regency Hotel, Drumcondra and are seeking nominations for this year’s ‘Donegal Person of the Year’.

Sorcha Ní Dhomhnaill, Chairperson, welcomed everyone to the meeting and reviewed the Association highlights.

It was a special year for the Association when Liam Ó Cuinneagáin was inaugurated as Donegal Person of the Year.

There was great excitement from the announcement of the Person of the Year in the Mansion house in January to the Gala Dance at the Regency Hotel in March.

Hundreds turned out to witness this special event in the Donegal Association’s annual calendar.

Liam was considered a ‘special man’, a hero within his local community who has done extraordinary things to develop our Irish language, culture, tourism and local traditions.

He is a truly great ambassador for the Donegal Association!

Sorcha Ni Dhomhnaill and Martin McGettigan

Sorcha Ni Dhomhnaill and Martin McGettigan

As we look forward to the year ahead – take note of our upcoming events!

The Donegal Association will hold their Annual Mass of Remembrance in the Regency Hotel, Drumcondra, on Sunday 16th November 2014 at 6.30pm.

The Father McDyer lecture this year will be given by Br. Kevin Crowley who founded the Capuchin Day Centre in Church Street in 1974.

At present, the Capuchin Day Centre distributes 1,800 food parcels every week and provides nearly 700 meals, six days a week.

The centre also provides a medical service, chiropody clinics, an optical service and advice as well as information clinics for the homeless in Dublin.

Br. Kevin is the champion of the homeless and he has worked tirelessly to help those in need without asking any questions or judging anyone.

In recent times the centre has received minimum government funding, however, Br Kevin has been pivotal in leading fundraising campaigns, and every cent raised goes towards helping the homeless.

And finally, don’t forget the search is on for the next Donegal Person of the Year.

The closing date for receipt of nominations is 30th November 2014 so you only have a few weeks left to get your nomination to the association.

Anyone or any group may nominate a person – the main criteria being that the person nominated should have made a significant contribution to the promotion of the county at local, national, or international level.

Nominations should set out the reasons for the nomination and include supporting documentation and endorsements from individuals and groups.

Nomination forms may be downloaded from the Association’s website www.donegalassociation.ie or by request from The Secretary, Donegal Association, c/o Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square, Dublin 1.

*Intermediate Championship Play Off Semi Final*

CLG BnaG 0-8 Naomh Colmcille 0-12

The Seniors were left feeling disappointed and frustrated after Saturdays defeat to Naomh Colmcille in Killygordon. The Gallowglasses would have rathered get the win and ensure Intermediate Championship football next year but as it stands they will have to play near neighbours Downings in a playoff final on a date to be determined. The lads got off to a poor start to the game, going 0-4 to 0-1 down after ten minutes, although the wet and windy conditions in Killygordon made life difficult. There were no administrative errors from the referee as Ian Molloy correctly gave Newtowns Ryan McKinley a red card after he was black carded for a Peter Stringer-esque heel tap on Christopher Barrett, having already being booked early in the game. This came after 27 minutes but Newtown still led at half time 0-5 to 0-2. With the extra man, and the wind at their backs for the second half, the lads performance improved, but unfortunately they were guilty of being very wasteful of possession at times and also unlucky with their chances. They had numerous decent goal chances and on another day with a bit more luck could have won this game comfortably if one or two of these chances had of came off. With 15 minutes there was only one point between the sides but Newtown were always a danger on the counter and got vital scores at key times as Na Galloglaigh kept battling to get back into the game. A second Newtown defender was black carded with ten minutes remaining before Conor McNulty got his marching orders for a second yellow to leave the teams at 14 men a piece, despite the game itself not being all that particularly rough. Naomh Colmcille got 2 more points late on to leave 4 between the sides at the final whistle to set up an all or nothing derby with Downings. Team: Sean Gallagher, Gary Merritt, Sean Black, Gavin Grier, Conor McNulty (0-2), Jonny Logue, Tj Evesson (0-1), Luc O Bairead, Joey Cullen, Pauric Curley, Christopher Barrett (0-1), James Doyle, Paddy Peoples, Cathal Mc Gettigan (0-4), David Curley. Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig talks to Irish Water workers.

Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig talks to Irish Water workers.

A county councillor is encouraging the Donegal public to stand on or drive their cars over manholes to stop Irish water installing meters.

Independent councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig made the call after seeing off an Irish water team in West Donegal today.

The workers from the GMC Sierra company, who are contracted to Irish Water, called to a number of villages including Meenaleck, Annagry, Crolly and Loughanure in a bid to fit water meters.

But Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig stood over the meters and refused to move.

The workers called their supervisors who told them to continue working but Councillor MacGiolla Easbuig refused to move.

He told the workers he did not want confrontation but was refusing to move.

The workers again called their supervisor and he informed the men to move out of the area.

The Independent councillor told Donegal Daily he has nothing against the workers but his gripe is with the Government and Irish Water.

“I have nothing against these men personally and I appreciate they are only trying to make a living but we are opposed to what they are doing.

“I would not condone confrontation and I certainly would not condone violence but I believe people can protest peacefully.

“If that means standing on manholes or driving our cars over them to stop this work, then so be it,” he said.

Cllr MacGiolla Easbuig said he was encouraging other councillors to take a similar hardline stand against the installation of water meters.

“We need to stand together on this issue and the likes of Fianna Fail need to come out and stand by the people and let them know where they stand on this issue.

“If we can stop Irish Waters from installing water meters then we can stop them trying to push this charge through on us,” he said.

JUDGE WANTS HSE TO REVIEW CASE OF TEENAGER WHO WENT ON CRIME SPREE

A young man went on a nine month rampage of deception and theft, robbing an old lady, seven petrol stations and even stealing a car from a man visiting his dying brother in hospital.

Dean Wells faces a litany of charges.

Dean Wells faces a litany of charges.

Dean Wells, 19, began carrying out the crimes just after celebrating his 18th birthday.

During that time he robbed seven petrol stations after driving off without paying for fuel.

The petrol stations included Tobins Filling Station, Glencar Filling Station, Kelly’s Centra, Mountain Top, Maxol station on Main Street, Muff, Dry Arch Service Station, Kernan’s Centra, Moorfield, Ramelton and Kernan’s Newtowncunningham.

On another occasion he called to the home of an 86 year old pensioner at Ballymacool, Letterkenny and claimed to be from the ESB.

He deceived her into handing over her bank cards and her social security card.

He tried to use the cards in a number of different outlets in Letterkenny before withdrawing €600 using the woman’s AIB banklink card at a local cash machine.

He later revealed he came up with the plan after seeing a similar plotline on a television soap opera the night before.

On April 1st last, Wells, with an address at 1 Cill A Oire, Killylastin, Letterkenny, was a patient at Sligo General Hospital.

Wells managed to confuse a motorist who had arrived to see his dying brother who died just a few minutes later.

He got the keys to the man’s green BMW and drove towards Letterkenny but was spotted by Gardai at Ballintra outside Donegal Town.

A pursuit took place and Gardai in Ballybofey eventually managed to stop Wells using a stinger device in Ballybofey.

A dog belonging to the owner of the stolen car was found in the passenger seat.

When apprehended by Gardai, Wells suffered an epileptic fit.

Barrister for Wells, Mr Damien Crawford, said many people had been working tirelessly to help the accused.

He said his client suffered from a number of conditions including Aspergers Syndrome and has a child’s view of the world.

He says he can take no responsibility for his actions and that his mother had done trojan work in trying to help him.

He gave an example of one occasion when he used a stolen cheque to buy four lambs at a mart.

“His grandfather was at the mart and he was mortified. What nineteen year old goes and buys four lambs at a mart?’ asked Mr Crawford.

He said his client got the idea of robbing the pensioner posing as an ESB official from watching a soap opera the night before.

He said his client, who is on remand in prison, cries when he has to go back after court appearances.

He also revealed that on one occasion he had an eyebrow shaved off in his sleep while in prison.

Mr Crawford said that with the help of his solicitor, Mr Gordon Curley, a place had been found in a live-in facility in Stranorlar.

However, the HSE had dropped out of the plan at the last minute saying Wells was not entitled to it.

Mr Crawford suggested that a representative from the HSE could come into court to explain the reasons why Wells had been precluded from the plan.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned the case until Thursday to see if a representative from the HSE could come to court to progress the matter.

“I would be very open to dealing with it in a creative way if we can find a place which would be appropriate. I share your view but it appears to be a bureaucratic issue,” said Judge Kelly.

GOLF LOGODunfanaghy Golf Club Notes:

It was Halloween week and there were plenty of people visiting Dunfanaghy over the festive week. There was also good numbers on the course despite the windy conditions. We are coming to the end of the GOY competitions. The last competition is the Christmas Hamper on the 23rd of November.

That will be your last chance to qualify for the Grand Final. You can also have a chance of qualifying if you win the monthly medal in November or December. Well done to all the winners over the last week in the club. Well done to Mary on winning the last man standing and to Fergus who came a credible second. Paul is in the process of putting arrangements in place to start the next last man standing. We will keep you posted.

Next Monday the 10th November we are running an open Senior Ladies & Gents single stableford Competition (55 plus). We plan to run this competition on a monthly basis for the winter. The cost to members will be €5.00 and €10.00 to non-members. G.U.I vouchers will be given out as prizes. Please make every effort to take part and spread the word to all your golfing non-member friends.

I can confirm that there is a sheet regarding anyone interested in the Gaeltacht league is now on the notice board. Please make sure to put your name and contact details on the sheet if you are interested in playing the league this winter. Sorry about the delay. The first match has been changed until the 15th of November 2013 where we are at home to Clochaneely Golf club.

We are started sociable evenings on the Friday evenings in the clubhouse again. The clubhouse will open from 4pm from this Friday onwards. There will be free bites for anyone who comes to the clubhouse on the Friday evenings. What better way to start the weekend.

The Winter Open 4BBB competition has just started on the 1st of October. This competition is great because you can play any day of the week, with whoever you want and as many times as you want until you qualify. There are four monthly winners each month who go forward to the Grand Final on the 21st of June 2015. The first three pairs qualify automatically and then the fourth pair will be the best recorded score by a 4BBB made up of club members each month. The 4BBB can be any combination and it would be great to see mixed pairs taking part as a follow on from the great competition ran by John and Cheryl Chambers this summer. All details of the competition can be seen on posters displayed in the clubhouse.

If anyone interested in joining the golf club, we have special offers in place at the moment. All details can be viewed on our website or contacting the clubhouse and speaking to Mary or Ruth. Anyone joining now will get the rest of 2014 free of charge.

In the cadet section a much improved display of putting from Ben King ultimately led to victory with Rory Kelly getting the shot of the day title with a great shot into the 16th green.
