Deputy-Thomas-PringleIndependent TD Thomas Pringle and his council colleague Cllr Michael Cholm MacGiollaEaspuig have today slammed the Letterkenny General Hospital closure of the antenatal clinic in Dungloe Community Hospital.

‘This is a huge blow to west Donegal that heaps added pressure on mothers and their partners forcing them to travel to Letterkenny for clinics that up to now have been provided locally,” said Pringle.

“Expectant parents will have added cost of travel and could have to rely on patchy public transport to access these vital clinics. It is totally unacceptable that the hospital should close this clinic’ said MacGiollaEaspuig.

“For Letterkenny General Hospital to withdraw this clinic is a disgrace and they should immediately reinstate it now’ said Pringle. ‘This decision calls into question the future of antenatal clinics around the county and Letterkenny General Hospital need to clarify now what their intentions are’ concluded Pringle.

Ms Sheerin appeared at Letterkenny District Court were she faced six different charges brought by the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton’s office.

Ms Sheerin, of Aishling Court, Ballybofey, was accused of illegally claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance between June 2009 and August 2012, causing a total loss of €23,235 to the department.

A department inspector told Sheerin first applied for the means tested payment on June 18, 2009.

During the application process the defendant was asked whether she had any savings or money in the bank, to which she replied “No”, and was awarded the benefits.

The inspector said the Revenue later revealed that Sheerin had an bank account with €200,000 lodged prior to the application.

Judge Paul Kelly heard Sheerin was interviewed by inspectors on November 21, 2012, where she admitted to having the money as a result of a marriage settlement and that she realised she should have submitted this information.

The inspector added that she repaid repaid the full amount to the department and therefore there was no loss.

The cream of Ulster schools football gathered in Kelly’s Inn on Friday evening for the presentation of the Ulster 2015 Post Primary All Star awards.

Players representing schools from seven counties received their awards along with their playing gear and hoodies as the 25 selected now go forward to take part in the All Ireland Inter Provincial Schools tournament in two weeks time.

Marie O’Reilly and Aine McGettigan from Loreto Letterkenny and Lauren McElwaine from Loreto Milford were Donegal’s All Star winners and will now go on to represent Ulster.

Chairman of the Ulster Schools Committee Louis O Donnell welcomed everyone and delivered his usual witty and interesting address. As well as acknowledging the role of parents and teachers Louis sincerely thanked KUKRI for their sponsorship, welcomed Mary Keegan back to her role as Ulster Administrator and paid tribute to Gerry Doherty for doing “a hell of a great job” when Mary was off.

After a beautiful four course dinner Mary Keegan took to the podium. The Ulster Administrator thanked her Ulster Executive members who had traveled from seven of the nine counties before going on to outline the history of the schools All Star awards. Mary also delivered some interesting stats – telling the girls that they were the ELITE 25 out of over 3000 who are currently playing schools football. She also a special word for the teachers who she described as “Unsung Heroes”. Lastly Mary thanked the girls and wished them all the best in their upcoming trip to Mullingar. Mary then made a small presentation to Louis O Donnell who is stepping down as Chairman of the schools committee.

The final speaker off the evening was Ulster Ladies President Joe Lagan . Joe also thanked a number of people including Kelly’s Inn for the wonderful food, the team selectors and event organisers.

The Ulster Ladies development Officer Owen Mooney then took over and introduced each of the players in turn. As their pictures appeared on the big screen each of them received their awards and gear as Owen read their biographies.

Without naming individuals its fair to say the group is a wonderful collection of young women which includes a boxer, world champion handballers, International soccer players, an All Ireland line dancer, a swimming instructor and an Ulster seanos dancer.

AN INISHOWEN student took silver in the BT Young Scientist of the Year awards in Dublin.

Jack McDermott, a 4th year student at Moville Community College took second spot in the Biological and Ecological category with his investigation to see if the shape of an egg affects the hatch rate in chickens.

The 17-year-old was the only Inishowen student in the finals, held in the RDS.

Jack has an incubator at home in Moville and used his own chickens for the project, in order to track genetics.

He wanted to know if there were differences between hatches and set about dividing the eggs into two groups – ‘regular-shaped’ eggs with no defects and irregular-shaped eggs with defects.

Jack said he hoped his findings – that regular-shaped eggs hatch better – would improve the hatch rate in chickens.

He was ‘over the moon’ with his award, he said.

“Jack’s project is very interesting and he came up with the idea himself. Looking at the bigger picture, his research findings could aid charities such as Bothar (who supply families with chickens) in ensuring they have a more successful hatch,” said teacher Rachel McGuinness.

JUDGE ORDERS BAKER TO PAY OUT €160 OVER ‘MEASLES’ WEDDING CAKE

Judge Paul Kelly

Judge Paul Kelly

A JUDGE has ordered a baker to hand back €160 to a couple over a wedding cake.

Judge Paul Kelly made the ruling at the small claims court in Letterkenny after the mother of the groom said the cake she ordered was completely different from the one she received.

The judge commented that it was “hugely unfortunate” that the parties in the dispute hadn’t settled it before coming to court.

The court heard that the dispute arose over a wedding in Dublin last July.

The mother of the groom had given a picture of the cake she wanted to the baker.

It was collected in Donegal and taken to Dublin by another relative two days before the big day.

But the mother of the groom said she was horrified when she saw the cake; edible gold petals she had asked for were a palish yellow.

“It (the cake) looked like a bowler hat with measles,” she told Judge Kelly.

Due to the error, the woman said she missed a tour of the Guinness Brewery and the wedding rehearsal with relatives of her new daughter-in-law who had arrived in the capital from north America.

Examining photographs of the cake which was ordered and pictures of the actual cake, Judge Kelly noted there was “a very substantial difference”.

The baker however handed in the dyes she used for the cake; saying the directions on colours were unclear.

“That’s what I see as gold,” she said.

The mother of the bride said the cake wasn’t used at the wedding as a result of its appearance.

Judge Kelly agreed it wasn’t the cake she had asked for and ordered the baker to reimburse the woman for €160.

ATHLETICS: LETTERKENNY AC’s MOONEY DOES WELL IN GREAT EDINBURGH XC RUN

Letterkenny Athletic Club’s Danny Mooney and Maria McCambridge, who was a LAC member for many years, lined up in the same team in the highly prestigious Great Edinburgh XC Run on Saturday.LETTERKENNY AC

They comprised the Irish team in the newly added International Mixed 2 x 1KM Relay. The pair finished in a very creditable 8th place, in 7m.00s, in the event in Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park, the scene of the 2008 World Cross Country Championship.

In the fairly recent past, finding road races in Donegal between the start of the year and St Patrick’s Day was a diffficult proposition. However, starting with the ‘Black and Amber’ 5 miler’ on Sunday January 4th, there are 13 races officially listed in the County until the middle of March.

One of these, the St Johnston 5K, took place today, the East Donegal village being the setting for the 1st of the 3 race Lifford AC 5K series. The race was run in wet, windy conditions, with Omagh Harriers’ Paul Barbour emerging as the winner in a time of 16.28. He was 30 seconds ahead of 2nd placed Martin Cox, in a race which underlined the strength of running in Donegal by attracting more than 300 participants on a morning of adverse weather conditions.

LAC’s top performer was Garvin Walker, in 19.10, with his club mate, Mark Diver, a mere 2 seconds behind him. Barry Mackey ran an excellent time of 20.49, gaining him 2nd place in the 50-54 Category. As the prizes are based on the overall results of the 3 races, Barry is well placed in his age group. Likewise, big Kerryman, Richard Raymond, who ran 22.19, will be hopeful of a good overall finish in the 60+ Category when the prizes are distributed after the third and final event.

The woman’s race was won by the host club’s Claire McGuigan, in 19.04, with LAC’s Ruth McCrudden and Jackie Ireland (2nd Female 50-54) having good runs. The 2nd race in the Lifford series will be the Raphoe 5K on Sunday January 25th.

Cross country action returns on Sunday, with the Northern Ireland and Ulster Intermediate and Masters’ XC Championship. The venue is Coleraine and LAC hopes to field strong teams in all the events.

JOE BROLLY CLASHES WITH DCU MANAGER NIALL MOYNA OVER MICHAEL MURPHY

Controversial GAA pundit and former Derry star Joe Brolly became embroiled in a war of words with DCU manager Niall Moyna on RTE Radio One this morning.

Joe Brolly clashed with DCU's Niall Moyna over player welfare in the GAA.

Joe Brolly clashed with DCU’s Niall Moyna over player welfare in the GAA.

Moyna called in to the show in relation to Brolly’s comments made earlier in the week about modern players being indentured slaves.

Brolly said many of the top GAA players in Ulster had no profession because of the demands of the game.

Brolly said that the GAA had adopted professional practices into an amateur community-based game and that it was no longer sustainable for players.

He said the professional practices adopted and the extensive training levels required were affecting players welfare, in his opinion.

However, Moyna hit back and said Brolly deals in anecdotal evidence, but that he’s a scientist and that he deals in facts.

Donegal captain Michael Murphy was dragged into the row when Brolly spoke about the training methods undertaken by Murphy when he was a student at DCU.

Murphy disclosed details of his schedule earlier this week, in which he revealed he trained three times a day when he was at DCU.

Brolly then recalled a Glenswilly GAA presentation dance he attended in 2013 when Murphy and his other Glenswilly teammates involved with Donegal were sipping water at the function because they had strength and conditioning training the next morning.

Brolly said, “I read Michael Murphy’s DCU diary that he wrote while he was in DCU during the week, he was training three times a day and he went straight from DCU into a regime where he was twice a day.

“I was at the Glenswilly medal presentation when they won their first Donegal championship in January (last year).
