A small ‘common’ dolphin was washed up on Carrickfin beach yesterday.

Carrickfin Beach.

Carrickfin Beach.

The dead dolphin was discovered by people walking on the beach and the stranding has been reported to the IWDG.

This is the second stranding in the area in a few days – with a similar sized one washed up at Port Arthur beach on Sunday.

It is not known how either dolphin died or if their deaths could be connected.

DRIVE IN OLD, DRIVE OUT NEW WITH THE NISSAN SCRAPPAGE DEAL AT INISHOWEN MOTORS

08There was a rush to the forecourts this week to register new models, with the industry predicting the best New Year sales figures in quite a while.

As we enter another new year and resolutions are being made, how about this for a resolution – in with the old and out with the new!

Inishowen Motors and Nissan are pleased to announce their latest cost saving promotion.

Trade in your old car now and you’ll get a guaranteed minimum of €4,000 towards a brand new Nissan Pulsar, Note, Juke or Micra.

Hurry though, this is only until January 31st.

It has never been a better time to buy a new car, with wage increases expected this year and fuel prices expected to fall even further.

But buyers are still very budget conscious and economy and emission levels, which are directly related to road tax charges, are still big topics on the forecourt.

Nissan have been at work on these issues, with new engines and car designs across the entire range, the new aerodynamic bodystyle on the Pulsar will cut through the wind the same way it’ll cut through your fuel costs.

Tax for the year is just €180 on the diesel model which is the lowest you can get.

The 110 BHP engine has plenty of power.

Inishowen Motors is the place to go with your old car where you will get a guaranteed €4000 for it, all it needs is a valid NCT cert.

These popular and stylish models have never been more affordable and according to the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry), 2015 is the year to buy new.

Alan Nolan Director General SIMI commenting on these figures; “As 2014 has drawn to a close we are pleased to end the year with new car sales 30% ahead of the previous year. ‘The feedback received from our members for January has been very positive, indicating continued growth in sales in January and the rest of 2015’

Don’t make this year one of failed resolutions and make sure you avail of this great offer with Inishowen Motors and Nissan. This scrappage offer is only available until January 31st 2015 so act quickly and make sure this resolution drives you into 2016!

Cars are crawling in Barnsemore Gap.

Cars are crawling in Barnsemore Gap.

A HEAVY fall of snow – with snow continuing – has hit Co Donegal this morning.

Motorists are being urged to drive with care.

Most main routes have been gritted – but secondary roads are treacherous.

Barnesmore Gap is described as treacherous but has not been closed. Several cars have been left stranded but a snow plough has now arrived at the scene.

McGrory’s Brae outside Ballybofey towards Donegal Town in also blocked.

The Inch Road at Burt is described as very bad with heavy snow where motorists are asked to slow down and take care.

Rosses Community School will remain closed as will several playschools but the vast majority of schools have opened.

The main Glenties to Ardara Road is passable but several cars are stuck.

And with more snow and freezing conditions forecast throughout the day, people are asked to take care.

Temperatures will only reach between 1 to 4 degrees throughout the day.

SENIORS

Cappry Rovers 1-0 Drumoghill

This game was played in poor conditions in Cappry. Drumoghill had a strong wind behind them in the first half and pressed hard to go in front but the home team defended well. Cappry were dangerous on the break in the first half with Alan Patton going close on a couple of occasions but both his efforts went wide. Benny Bonner’s 25 yard free kick just cleared the crossbar. Cappry held out to keep the game scoreless at half time. The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Benny Bonner’s corner found the bottom corner. In the 57th minute Benny Bonner chipped the Drumoghill keeper from 40 yards but saw his effort come back off the post. Drumoghill pressed hard to get level but the Cappry defence dealt well with the pressure. The closest Drumoghill came was when Liam O’Donnell got free in the box but his effort was cleared of the line by Gary Dunnion. Drumoghill kept pressing but couldn’t get through the Cappry defence. Team Performances from Cappry and Drumoghill. Ref: Kevin Logue

PEARSE DOHERTY –“AIB OUTSOURCING PLANS PART OF A WIDER WORRYING TREND”

$
0
0

Pearse Doherty DailSinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the AIB move to outsource its IT workforce is part of a wider worrying trend among Irish banks, including the Central Bank, to outsource essential IT systems.

Speaking today Deputy Doherty said, “I have been aware for some time that this move has been on the cards.

“What we are seeing is a now profitable State bank outsourcing, putting jobs and customer supports at risk. Sinn Féin is opposed to such outsourcing. It is not a solution to the serious issues facing our banking system.

“In this case it seems AIB have decided to proceed to outsource hundreds of IT jobs. The bank should make sure that no jobs are lost and that the rights and conditions including Trade Union recognition must be respected by any companies taking on a contract.

“Any changes should only be made after agreement with the Trade Unions representing the staff concerned. It is important that any such agreement is long term in nature so that these jobs are not off-shored once the dust has settled.

“The Minister for Finance owns 99% of AIB and has a responsibility to make sure workers at what is a State company are treated fairly.

“Workers at AIB should not be thrown to the wolves to make AIB look leaner for potential suitors. AIB has recently returned to profit so there is no justification for now cutting jobs.

“This outsourcing is part of a more worrying trend across the banking sector including the Central Bank where essential IT services are sold to third parties.

“The computer failure at Ulster Bank in Summer 2012 has been put down to a failure caused by an over reliance on outsourcing.

“The recent fine levied on it for this failure was tiny. The security, competition and privacy issues raised are enormous and any bank, especially a State owned one, should not pretend outsourcing is a solution to the serious issues still haunting our banking system.

Forecasters are warning that Donegal is set for even more snow in the next 24 hours.

Up to three inches of snow is set to fall overnight and tomorrow morning.

Met Eireann have warned that conditions are to get even worse across Donegal tonight.

However the snowfall is to be replaced tomorrow evening by wind and rain.

Most of the county awoke to a blanket of snow this morning with treacherous road conditions from Killybegs to Buncrana.

Throughout the day further heavy falls have added to those trying conditions.

In Gaoth Dobhair, road conditions are described as “lethal” after heavy falls of hail froze and were then covered in fresh falls of snow.

Some schools in the west of the county including Rosses Community School, Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobair as well as Scoil an Luinnigh Gaoth Dobhair and Dooish National School in Ballybofey have closed.

The main road from Drumkeen to Ballybofey is almost impassable with long tailbacks.

Donegal County Council has dispatched its full compliment of winter machinery including snowploughs and gritters onto the county’s roads.

Gardai are asking people to slow down and not to take any chances.

Motorists are also asked to use common sense and to clear vehicles of snow before driving them.

Gardai are also asking people to call in on elderly neighbours who may be in fear of going out in public because of the snowfalls.

The statement says “The Emergency Department at Letterkenny General Hospital is extremely busy today with above average numbers of very ill patients requiring admission to the hospital. There are currently 31 patients requiring admission to beds.”

Members of the public are asked to avoid attending the Emergency Department if possible and to contact their GP or GP Out of Hours services in the first instance.

And the statement warned “Non-emergency cases attending the Emergency Department will experience lengthy delays.”

The hospital said it regrets any inconvenience to patients and their families and is taking all steps to deal with the situation including curtailing non-emergency surgery and strengthening discharge planning.

With snow showers and heavy rain expected over the next two days Donegal County Council is urging all members of the public to exercise caution, to take extra care on the roads and to allow extra time for journeys.

This driver has a lucky escape when they hit a pole in Loughanure this morning.

This driver has a lucky escape when they hit a pole in Loughanure this morning.

All of the council’s 25 road gritting crews have been out since 5am this morning gritting all the main routes in the county with a view to keeping the roads passable and we will continue this work throughout the day and into the evening.

We expect that crews will be out tomorrow morning again and we are appealing to all motorists to take extra care and even if a road is treated it does not guarantee that the road is ice free so extreme care should be taken.

The public can keep up to date with road conditions by following us on Twitter @roadsdcc or @donegalcouncil or by checking out the Councils dedicated Winter Weather website at www.donegalcocowinterweather.ie.

This site includes links to an interactive map which provides motorists and road users with up to date information on road conditions and road gritting plans on a given night.

It also shows the locations of public sand and grit collection points and includes an hourly weather forecast feed for most areas in the county so that you can check local forecast for the next 12-24 hours.

There are also links to weather cameras to view live conditions in three locations in the county.

This site has been developed with the road user and the motorist in mind so that they can access as much relevant information as they need to make safe driving decisions during the winter months.

You can access this site at www.donegalcocowinterweather.ie and you can keep up to date through the Council’s Twitter accounts @roadsdcc or @donegalcouncil and our Face book page.

Davitt Walsh in action for Nelson Suburbs during his time in New Zealand. Walsh has signed for Irish League outfit Institute.

Former Finn Harps star Davitt Walsh has re-signed for Institute following a short stint in New Zealand.

Walsh is a decorated striker and has played for a whole host of clubs in both the League of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Premiership.

Walsh previously played for Institute as well as Ballymena United and Lisburn Distillery in the Northern Ireland Premiership.

While in the League of Ireland Walsh has played for Finn Harps, Derry City, Shelbourne and Bohemians.

Paul Kee has snapped up the experienced striker after he cut short his spell with the Nelson Suburbs in New Zealand.

Walsh scored 7 goals in nine appearances for the Nelson Suburbs and his impressive form led to him being touted by several clubs in New Zealand’s Premier League.

However, Walsh failed to settle and opted to return to home despite his successful spell at the club.

Kee will be hoping he can get best from Walsh who has the undoubted quality and class for this level of football.

With Institute struggling to find the net since the departure of Stephen O’Flynn, Kee will be hoping he can solve their goal scoring issues.

Walsh is not expected to feature in Institute’s crucial match with fellow strugglers Dungannon Swifts on Friday.

It’s expected Walsh will not feature for a few weeks until he gets his paperwork from New Zealand sorted with the IFA.

SNOW CLOUDTHIS was the colour of the sky over Lough Foyle earlier.

It’s called a ‘thunder snow cloud’ according to BBCNI weatherman Barra Best.

And it settled in the sky – straddling counties Donegal and Derry – not long after a blue lightning storm erupted.

The picture was taken well after dusk – so that blue you see is a the electric-charged lightning, not blue sky.

Seamus Coleman scored for Everton during their penalty shoot-out defeat to West Ham in the FA cup.

There was heartbreak for Seamus Coleman tonight as his Everton side bowed out of the FA Cup on penalties in their 3rd round replay with West Ham United.

In a thrilling shoot-out it was West Ham who finally prevailed 9-8 in a shoot-out that had twenty penalties taken.

Coleman dispatched his own penalty expertly in the shoot-out but it wasn’t enough for Roberto Martinez’s side.

It was a typical fast and furious cup tie which thrilled from start to finish.

Valencia put the hammers ahead early in the second-half but that goal was cancelled out by Mirallas with just seven minutes remaining.

The game was then brought into extra-time with both teams going for jugular despite the fact Everton were down to ten men following the dismissal of Aiden McGeady.

Everton looked to have booked there place in the fourth round when Lukaku put them ahead but Carlton Cole prodded home to sent the game to penalties.

Everton goalkeeper Robles missed his spot-kick and that allowed West Ham’s goalkeeper Adrian to step up and fire West Ham through.
