‘I STILL CAN’T WATCH OUR DEFEAT BY DONEGAL’– DUBS STARS BROGAN

Dublin star Bernard Brogan has admitted he still hasn’t been able to watch his side’s demolition by Donegal in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final.

Bernard Brogan

Bernard Brogan

The forward told Ryan Tubridy on last night’s Late Late Show that he was still hurt by the manner in which they were beaten.

Brogan said he felt his team had left the game on the pitch.

But he admitted that Jim McGuinness and his team came to Croke Park with a plan and executed it well.

He suggested that a couple of mistakes by his team was the only difference between winning and being dumped out of the championship.

However he admitted that he had still not watched a repeat of the game.

He laughed and said he would have to have the 30 players from the entire Dubin set-up with him to relive the moment.

Perhaps he can watch a replay this summer with Rory Gallagher as the new director of the Donegal dreamteam!

THE SOUTH AFRICAN TWINS WHO FOUND A CALLING FOR SCIENCE IN LETTERKENNY

Even during their years at Errigal College in Letterkenny it was clear that twins Nala and Naledi Shologu were no ordinary students.

Naledi and Nala Shologu (left to right) at a recent NUI-Galway graduation ceremony during which they were awarded their Master’s degrees in Biomedical Science. Both young women are currently PhD candidates at the school.

The girls, who moved to Ireland from South Africa as 9-year-olds, had enrolled in the school after enjoying a visit to it with other members of their primary school class at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál.

By Julie Costello

While at Errigal College both Nala and Naledi developed a love of science and an interest in studying the subject at university. Learning that to do this they’d need to sit their Leaving Cert in two science subjects – but that the school offered only one, Biology – they were undaunted.

“We told the school what we wanted to do,” explained Naledi, “and they brought in Chemistry especially for us and provided a teacher to teach it to us. There were only five of us in the class that year.”

“After that Chemistry was kept on, so a lot of students have taken it,” Nala seamlessly continued. “At the time there were only two of us asking for the course but the school added it anyway, which I think pushed us forward to loving science. At any other school they’d say, ‘There’s only two of you’, and they wouldn’t care. But at Errigal College they do care.”

This Autumn Errigal College’s support for Nala and Naledi came to fruition at NUI-Galway, where both received their Master’s degrees in Biomedical Science and are currently working on cutting-edge medical research projects for their PhDs.

The twins, who are now 23, completed their undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Science at Sligo IT in 2012.

They spoke about their academic accomplishments during a recent visit from Galway to the family home in Old Town, where they sat side by side on a sitting room sofa, similar in their confidence and poise yet distinctive in their interests and perspectives.

Nala’s research for her PhD in Medicine involves investigating ways in which human stem cells can be used for the treatment of acute lung injuries and diseases. “From secondary school I always loved science and thought I’d want to do medicine,” she said. “I never really wanted to work with patients, though, so this is perfect for me because I’m quite happy in the lab. I wasn’t quite sure what being a medical scientist would involve, but becoming one I realise it was actually the best choice.”

Naledi’s research for her PhD in Biomedical Engineering is focussed on creating a three-dimensional model of a cancer cell which can be used in the testing of anti-cancer drugs. “It was either science or art for me,” she said. “I really liked my art classes, and for the CAO I chose art or science. Art is still a hobby; I love both of them. Science is actually similar to art…you have the freedom of doing anything, designing something from very little or nothing and modifying it as you go along. Creativity applies in both.”

The twins’ life in Ireland began in 2001 when they arrived here with their widowed mum, Nolunga, and two sisters. The family spent eight months in a Kerry accommodation centre before being granted asylum and moving to Letterkenny.

“Only God did this, I won’t take any credit!” Nolunga said of the twins’ accomplishments, which their younger sister, Ziyanda, a fourth-year student in Biomedical Science at Sligo IT who also attended Errigal College, appears to be on track to duplicate. “I was always praying for them to do the right things and very much encouraging and supporting them in everything.”

In the years since arriving in Letterkenny Nolunga has herself had a number of outstanding accomplishments, including earning an Honours degree in Community Development at Letterkenny Institute of Technology and serving as Intercultural Community Development Officer at Letterkenny Community Development Project.

“I love Letterkenny because it’s a really nice town that I feel very comfortable in,” she said.

While she is not scientifically-inclined herself, Nolunga said, her husband, Richard, who died in 1994 when the twins were just three years old, “was very brilliant in mathematics. I’m always telling them their father’s spirit is watching them and he is very proud of them.”

Also very proud of Nala and Naledi is Charlie Cannon, Acting Principal of Errigal College. The school, which operates under the patronage of Donegal ETB, is currently celebrating its one hundredth anniversary and plans to include the twins’ story in a commemorative book marking the occasion.

“I’d like to congratulate them on their achievement and their continued studies,” Mr. Cannon said. “They’re one of our success stories. We knew from the word go that these students were committed and dedicated, which shows clearly in their progress. They faced challenges…it wasn’t easy for them due to the fact that they were moving to a new culture.

“Anything they’ve achieved they’ve worked very hard for, but no challenge has been too big. And the support their mum has given them has been tremendous.”

POSTMAN MICKEY CLAIMS COLD SNAP WILL LAST UNTIL END OF FEBRUARY

Ireland’s most famous amateur weatherman has said the country’s current cold snap could last until the end of February.

Postman Michael Gallagher

Postman Michael Gallagher

Co Donegal postman Michael Gallagher warned in December that the country would be covered in snow for the start of the New Year.

And although his prediction of a white Christmas never came to pass, he is convinced the sleet and snow is here to stay.

Mr Gallagher, who uses the behaviour of plants and animals in the Bluestack Mountains to make his predictions, said all the indications are that we’re set to shiver for another six weeks.

“I was a little out with the Christmas prediction but I knew it was only a matter of time before snow arrived early in the New Year.

“All the classic signs were there that the temperatures were going to dip.

“The trees were laden with berries for the birds and foxes were spotted coming into outhouses to shelter.

“The plants and animals react to nature. Previous generations used all these signs so it’s nothing new,” he said.

People across the North-West awoke today to another heavy fall of sleet and snow.

Met Eireann are predicting the cold snap will last until next Wednesday but say they cannot forecast beyond that accurately.

However, postman Michael added “That’s certainly not the end of the snow.

“In fact, we’ll have more this weekend and next week. It may clear up a little but we’re going to have a series of cold snaps with plenty of snow right up until the end of February.”

Luckily they had what looks like two very warm hooded wetsuits.

But we can’t help thinking a nice armchair before a roaring fire would have been warmer!

Pair tried to take man to cash machine to withdraw money.

The man contacted Donegal Daily saying he felt intimidated by the two men whom he said were acting in a hostile and aggressive manner.

The man, who lives in the Dungloe area, said the pair were traveling in a red van when they called to his home and did not have local accents.

He revealed “They were selling a various selection of tools.

“These men were of medium to large build. (One was larger than the other.) Approximately 5 foot 10 inches in height.

“They did not have a local accent. I believed it to be a southern type of accent.

“They were aggressive, bully-like, forceful and “In Your Face” in nature.

“They went on and on in an attempt to make a sale of the selection of tools they were carrying. I continued to reject their offers. I didn’t want to buy anything.

“After I refused the sale and said I had no money and would not like to buy anything, they continued to interject asking “You must have money somewhere?” I said, “No”, I didn’t.

The man said the pair then offered to take him to his bank to use his bankcard.

“I said, “No”. They then continued to ask for every type of payment, including cheque and loose cash. I said “No, I don’t want to buy anything”.

“They became aggressive and rather forceful. The more and more I had to decline their offer of tools, the more and more I felt threatened.

“They were very dominant. Finally, they got the message to leave my property and while leaving said to me, “We’ll not f***ing come back here again”.

The man said he believed the pair were a danger to the community and urged people not to have anything to do with them and to contact Gardai immediately.

“They were aggressive and forceful. They are not to be trusted. I urge you all not to have any dealings with them and not to entertain them in any way.

“If you’ve had the same experience, I urge you all to report them immediately,” said the man.

The bones were found buried beneath a huge Beech tree on the grounds of the former TV boss’s estate in Raphoe.

Some of the bones which were found.

Gardai sealed off the area and began an examination of the remains.

It has not ben established yet if the bones are human or from an animal.

A spokesman for Oakfield Park said “On inspection of the tree we noticed some large bones under where the roots were. Given the location of the bones under an ancient tree the bones have been there a very long time.

“We couldn’t distinguish if the bones were human or animal so we had to follow procedures and informed An Garda Síochána who promptly carried out a detailed investigation.”

A Garda spokesman confirmed a full investigation has been carried out into the discovery.

He added that the bones have now been sent off for analysis.

Oakfield House was by Sir Gerry Robinson and his wife lady Heather Robinson in 1996.

Since then the couple have spent a fortunate renovating the 18th century Georgian house which sits on 100 acres of lush woodlands.

Sir Gerry, the former Granada TV boss from the village of Dunfanaghy, is popular with locals and opens up his pile in the summer to visitors.

The colourful businessman has even installed an old steam-train which travels through the grounds of the estate.

DONEGAL SURVIVE LATE SCARE TO OVERCOME FERMANAGH IN McKENNA CUP

Donegal survived a late scare to beat Fermanagh by a single point in Ballyshannon this afternoon on a scoreline of Donegal 0-12 Fermanagh 2-5.

Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher’s side looked to be in cruise control in this McKenna Cup game and led by seven points at half-time on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-3.

Points for the likes of Daniel McLaughlin, Eoin McHugh, Ciaran McGinley, Neil Gallagher and Frank McGlynn put Donegal in the driving seat.

For the likes of Paul Durcan, Glenswilly man Gallagher and Eamon McGee, it was their first run out for Donegal this year.

But second half goals by Marty O’Brien and Sean Quigley left Donegal hanging on to claim full points.

Michael Murphy was a late introduction when Hugh McFadden was black-carded.

In the end it didn’t matter as, despite the victory, Donegal failed to qualify for the semi-final with not enough points racked up.

Rory Gallagher will be pleased by his first three games in charge having blooded a number of new players.

FB_20150118_22_21_18_Saved_PictureIn their first competitive outing of the season Kevin McHugh’s U13 Donegal Schoolboys side got their campaign off to a flyer with an emphatic win over Sligo/Leitrim.

McHugh’s outfit won the U12 Foyle Cup in the summer and his side sent a real message of intent to their rivals with an outstanding display this afternoon.

In a quiet first-half both teams looked very nervy and failed to settle into the game.

Sligo then took the lead after a goalmouth scramble right at start of second-half half.

Donegal equalised through Frankie Campbell when he lobbed the keeper.

McHugh’s side took the lead straight away through Conor Black who finished with a flick to the top corner.

Sligo hit back though and scored again then when a header wasn’t properly cleared, their striker expertly dispatched the effort to the top corner.

Donegal scored again with ten minutes to go with the best goal of game through Finian O’Donnell when he smashed one to the roof of the net from twenty yards.

Donegal wrapped up the scoring with a header from Ronan McKinley.

Good team performance from both sides.

Assistant manager Mel O’Donnell was delighted with the result but admitted they’ve plenty to work on.

“Delighted with the result, the lads showed great character and responded well to going behind, our performance could’ve been better though.

“It’s something for us to work on, and it’s only our first competitive match, we’ll get better, the lads applied themselves superbly and we look forward to the next match now.

Next up for O’Donnell and McHugh is an away trip to Monaghan /Cavan in February.

DONEGAL PRIEST INVOLVED IN ‘FRIENDLY’ ROW ON FACEBOOK WITH UNHAPPY PARISHIONER

10565269_811681558894794_1508199376542698098_nA Donegal priest has been put under extra pressure when delivering his sermons following an on-going Facebook campaign which rates the popular priest’s masses every week.

Fr. Pat Ward has had to defend his sermons and the length of his mass after he received criticism via Facebook from local parishioner Paul Ferry.

Fr. Ward is the parish priest for both the Acres and Kincasslagh parishes and is helped in carrying out his daily duties by Fr. Matt McInerney.

However, Mr Ferry has criticized Fr. Pat several times for missing mass in Acres and questioned his commitment.

Ferry once accused Fr. Ward of skipping mass to attend a Beyoncé concert.

Fr. Ward didn’t deny the accusation and responded by saying, “Baby when I see your halo.”

The weekly exchanges between the pair are done in jest, much to the delight and amusement of the local community who race home from mass every Sunday to see how Ferry has rated Fr. Ward’s performance at mass.

Prior to Christmas Mr Ferry posted the following message to Fr. Ward.

“Well well well….there’s a new game out for xmas called “Where’s Fr.Pat “???? It’s a spin off on Where’s Wally only it’s based on the Rosses area on a Sunday morning and you have a specific time to find Pat before mass starts!!!!

“You’ve let the side down today again, rumour has it your away to the cinema to get a quiet viewing of Paddington bear.

“Rumours are rife that you were seen getting the early ferry into Arranmore dressed as Santa with a keg under your arm!!!

“Bishop Brennan, I mean Boyce will be contacted if this behaviour continues, poor Matt’s an old man you know!!!!

Fr. Ward jokingly responded by saying, “I need to get my money’s worth out of him.

Fr. Ward then moved quickly to ensure everybody knew the exchange was just a laugh.

Fr. Ward said, “Just to reassure people that all the above between Paul and myself is ‘banter’, to be taken with a pinch of salt and enjoyed.

“No priests or parishioners were harmed during this interaction.

On Saturday evening last Mr Ferry was at it again, “Well Pat hows she hanging ? Obviously I’m waiting hard on mass tomorrow morning, the suspense of hearing your sermon is nearly too much!!!

I hear through the grapevine that you have gained two new sheep to your flock in the form of Niamh Rodgers and Denis O Donnell!!

This is both great news for yourself as Denis is a tunnel tiger and estimated to be making a colossal amount of cash that will only help the dwindling basket in Acres.

Niamh is also a tremendous singer and a great addition for the choir, maybe it’s time to oust Maureen Forker finally!!!!

Great work Pat in the transfer window…..With every marriage comes great responsibility!!!!!

Fr. Ward responded this afternoon with the following remark, “Slept in did you Paul??

The on-going banter between the pair is likely to continue, but it’s not just Fr. Ward that comes under attack from the affable Mr Ferry.

The choir and other parishioners especially those who arrive late are also exposed by Ferry.

So when you’re at mass in Acres make sure you’re on your best behaviour or you might just be reading about yourself on Facebook! :)

EMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: HOW TO STICK TO YOUR RESOLUTIONS

$
0
0

unnamedBY EMMET RUSHE: We are in week 3 of 2015.

By now, the New Year’s resolutions are in full swing.

Gyms will be buzzing with people who are fully committed to making this year the year they absolutely achieve their goals.

It is also around the 3rd week of the year that the shine starts to come off of the good intentions that some people had for their goals.

You will naturally have a bit of a fall off around this time and it increases every week until only the most dedicated are left.

So why is it that only 8% of people who make resolutions are able to stick to them?

We have to look at the way people are setting out goals for themselves.

When you are setting out and making your goals, you can’t just concentrate on what you want.

If you only concentrate on what you want, you might never actually get started.

Your goal could seem too big.

You could find reasons as to why you wouldn’t be able to achieve them and if you managed to achieve them, you might not be able to keep them, so it’s probably best not to even start.

Sound familiar?

So what can we do?

What is it that we have to change in order to keep on track with our goals?

We have to change the way we plan out our goals.

We have to stop always looking at what we want and start setting out steps to help us actually get what we want.

It is easy to say ‘I want to lose 10lbs’, but if all you do is say I want, and you never change anything in order to get there, nothing will change.

Instead of saying I WANT, ask yourself;

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS?

WHAT DO I HAVE TO CHANGE IN MY LIFE TO REACH MY GOAL?

It doesn’t have to be major changes either.

Andrea Bonior, Ph.D., a psychologist in private practice in Washington, DC, and author of the “Baggage Check” column for the Washington Post Express says;

“Since your supply of self-control is finite, make resolutions that require small acts of will, not weeks of vigilance.”

‘Lose 10 pounds’ sounds specific, but it’s less likely to work than behavioural goals like
’This week I’ll try to go to the gym three times, take the stairs at work at least twice, and bring a healthy lunch every day,’ “.

“You’ll feel good when you accomplish each goal, and your success will help bolster your resolve: The better you are at making small changes, the easier it will be for you to keep going.”

Small steps like these are a great way to self-motivate and these small goals can help you reach your major ones.

When choosing your goals, try not to pick too many.

Doing this can quite often dilute your motivation and leave you goalless come February.

“Once you understand that you have only a limited amount of willpower, it’s easy to understand why multiple resolutions aren’t likely to work”, says Ian Newby-Clark, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Guelph in Canada.

Most resolutions actually require many behaviour changes. Sure, some are straightforward, like remembering to take a calcium pill every day — but a successful weight-loss program, for example, calls for more than just a decision to eat less.

You have to shop and cook differently, start or ramp up an exercise routine, maybe even ditch certain social or family events. “Thinking through these sub strategies boosts success rates,” says Newby-Clark.”

The last tip I’ll leave you with when trying to stick to your resolutions is this;

Avoid making 100% resolutions.

Don’t say to yourself that you are ‘giving up everything and that’s final.’

Let’s face it it’s never going to work.

Instead aim for 90%, this will allow for some leeway if you get stuck or caught out or end up at a family event.

One meal never ruined anyone’s goals.

Donegal is to shiver for another week with freezing temperatures and even more falls of snow.

Further falls of snow are likely on Donegal’s roads tonight and tomorrow morning. Pic Donegal Daily.

The bitterly cold weather which has hung over the north-west for the past week will continue with freezing fog, sleet and snow this week.

Temperatures plunged to -5C in some places last night with a severe frost this morning.

People are asked to take care with black ice on roads and many footpaths still dangerously icy.

And forecasters say Ulster could be hit by up to another 5cms of snow this evening with accumulations in places tonight and tomorrow morning.

Driving conditions could deteriorate with further falls of sleet and snow.

Wednesday is set to see even more snow and although Thursday and Friday may see a slight rise in temperatures, another cold snap is set to move in again next weekend.

Met Eireann forecast for the coming days

Last night was very cold overnight, with a widespread hard frost and icy stretches on untreated roads. Mist and fog will form too, as winds fall off light, with some pockets of freezing fog in places. Lowest temperatures zero to -5 C.

Today

Staying very cold on Monday, with frost, ice and fog slow to clear. A dry morning, with a little hazy sunshine in eastern areas, but rather cloudy generally. Outbreaks of rain and sleet will push into Connacht and west Munster during the afternoon, preceded by some snow in places. Top temperatures 1 to 4 C., generally but 5 or 6 C., along the southwest coast.

Outlook

The wintry weather will continue on Monday night with further outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow. Snow falls possibly leading to accumulations of greater than 5 cm in places by Tuesday morning. It’ll be cold overnight with temperatures down to between zero and minus 3 degrees generally, but as low as minus 6 or 7 degrees over lying snow in Ulster. Winds will be light variable overnight. The rain and snow will clear western areas overnight.

On Tuesday morning there’ll be further falls of snow in eastern areas during the morning, but drier, brighter weather further west will extend eastwards and the afternoon will be mainly dry for much of the country. Then later Tuesday there’ll be wintry showers developing once again, becoming confined to coastal areas Tuesday night. During the day temperatures are likely to be between 2 and 6 degrees, the higher temperatures will be in the southwest of the country, with light to moderate southwest winds, becoming westerly overnight as temperatures fall well below freezing once again.

On Wednesday there’ll be rain, sleet and snow showers on the west and north coasts, pushing further inland at times, but it will be mainly dry elsewhere. Another cold day with sub-zero temperatures at night and light to moderate westerly winds.
