GAA BACK ST EUNAN’S GAA CLUB IN LETTERKENNY GAELS BOUNDARY DISPUTE

$

0

St Eunan's GAA logoST Eunan’s GAA club has received the backing of the GAA in its boundary dispute with Letterkenny Gaels, it was announced tonight.

It brings to an end the proposal by the Gaels which would have divided the town.

The Gaels had insisted they cannot grow without exclusive access to players in the parish of Aughaninshin part of the town declared as their club’s catchment area.

The clubs in the county voted to back the Gaels, but this was overturned by the Ulster Council which backed Eunan’s.

However the GAA’s Dispute Resolution Authority has ruled that the town should not be divided.

St Eunan’s insisted there was an agreement with the Gaels when the latter club was founded that there would be no division in the parishes of the town.

The DRA had already overseen three hearings on the matter and has now ruled to keep the situation as it is – allowing players and members to choose which club they wish to join.

COUNCIL TO DISCUSS EMERGENCY MOTION ON WIND FARMS AFTER TURBINE COLLAPSE

wind turbineDONEGAL county councillors are set to try to introduce an emergency motion on wind farms after the collapse of a wind turbine.

The 64-metre hight Vestas-built turbine snapped and fell at a bog near Maas last Friday.

Cllr Seamus O Domhnaill and several other councillors want assurances that the turbines are safe.

And Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty said last night that his party wanted all wind farm plans halted until the Vestas investigation is complete.

The Loughderryduff site has eight other turbines.

Engineers from the Danish manufacturers spent yesterday checking those in the hope none of those fall down too.

The Glenties Windfarm Information Group has been lobbying politicians to discuss the issue.

Last night Pearse Doherty said his party now supported a moratorium on all wind farms while the Donegal investigations continue.

And independent Cllr John Campbell says he will now request an emergency discussion of the wind turbines and the county development plan which allows for turbines on more than 2,000 Co Donegal townlands.

“A workshop to discuss the development plan has been cancelled and I will request a new one,” said Cllr Campbell.

‘GARDA HAD TO DRIVE AMBULANCE DUE TO STAFF SHORTAGE’– COUNCILLOR

AMBULANCESA GARDA was asked to drive an ambulance to Letterkenny General Hospital because no paramedic was available, a county councillor claimed today.

Cllr Liam Blaney says the incident happened just a few hundred metres from the hospital.

It follows another incident where the mother of a seriously ill child had to drive her own car to Letterkenny last November with a paramedic in the back seat because just one paramedic had gone to her home.

After that incident the HSE insisted the advanced paramedic had taken that decision to get the mother to drive her car because of the state of the boy; and that another ambulance crew was en route at the time.

Cllr Blaney said he has raised the latest incident with HSE.

“This incident I have learned of was before Christmas. A person was injured in a road accident near the hospital,” he said today.

“One paramedic attended the scene and a Garda who was also at the scene had to drive the ambulance back to the hospital.”

Cllr Blaney said he was fearful that there aren’t enough ambulance crew in the county.

“It just takes one or two staff to go off sick and then there isn’t enough cover,” said Cllr Blaney.

“I’ve asked the HSE for a report on this incident and so far they haven’t been able to give them a response. I have provided them with the details I am aware of.

“I am very very worried about what would happen in a case if this was in Fanad or Inishowen.”

The HSE says it is investigating Cllr Blaney’s complaint.

St Eunan's GAA logoTHE St Eunan’s GAA club has responded to a decision on the boundary dispute with Letterkenny Gaels.

The Gaels club has not responded yet.

In a statement the county champions said: St. Eunan’s GAA Club welcome the decision of the DRA to dismiss the appeal brought by Letterkenny Gaels against the decision of the Ulster Hearings Committee.

“The effect of this decision is to confirm that a shared catchment area exists for both St. Eunan’s and Letterkenny Gaels, which has been the situation since Letterkenny Gaels were affiliated in 1996. This means that anyone living within our shared catchment area is free to apply to join either club.

“We hope that this matter can now be put behind us and we look forward to working with all GAA people in our shared catchment area to advance the aims of the Association. We will be making no further comment.”

DUNFANAGHY GOLF NEWS: NEIL MCGINLEY WINS EASTER HAMPER

$
0
0

Well I am sure you all watched the news and saw snow everywhere with 10 foot drifts and people cut off but believe it or not we still played golf in Dunfanaghy.

There was a bitter cold wind that stopped most people going out on Friday and Saturday but the course was open.

In fact a Society went out on Saturday and had the course to themselves. But there was no rain or snow only the bitter cold wind.

However things eased somewhat on Sunday and the course filled again. However the wind was still a big factor and this affected the scoring big time.

I played with Neil McGinley and I have never seen him putting so well. He was only 2 over gross for the back nine and it was this that won him the Easter Eggs.

Anyway back to Wednesday Competition. Gerard Duffy has had a few close calls in competition recently but this time he made no mistake coming home with a super 44 points a clear 5 shots ahead of the field.

Noel Maguire took second with 39 points and Donal Boyle got another top up on his card with the Gross prize.

Master Chef Eamonn Hunter occasionally graces the course and he did it in style on Wednesday with 38 points playing with his old clubs. We expect big things Eamonn when the new ones arrive.

Friday the wind was so bad and it was so cold that no-one ventured out on the course at all.

Saturday I’m afraid was more of the same and only a Society braved the bitter cold winds to go on the course. Mind you when the rest of the country is bathed in snow we don’t even need orange balls.

Sunday the course filled with golfers needing their weekly fix of golf and although it was still cold the wind had an effect on putts blowing them off course.

However even with this Neil McGinley played some of the steadiest golf I have seen for some time. His putting was a dream with the ball falling in from everywhere.

With the conditions as they were, making the Competition stroke seemed harsh. A steady 68 was enough for Neil to win on the day but only just as second and third had also 68. BOT decided yet again the order of the day.

Paul Smith fresh from John Chamber’s party took second place edging out Patrick Duffy on BOT. Cahal McMonagle won the Gross with 78 and the nines were won by Paedar Curran and Mark McHugh.

CLEAN ESTUARY GROUP TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON HIGH COURT CASE

dolphins at greencastle/movilleTHE Moville and Greencastle based Campaign for Clean Estuary group is set to hold a public meeting to discuss their High Court case against Donegal County Council.

The council has plans to pump treated sewage into Lough Foyle.

Campaign group spokesman Enda Craig told Donegal Daily: “The case was heard over four days and on Friday the judge retired to consider his ruling. This could take some time as there is a considerable body of information that must be considered.

“The legal team for the campaign highlighted “the unanimous resolution of the DCC, the local residents, the shellfishing community, the Loughs Agency, An Taisce, Coastwatch Europe and most important of all, the Inspector of An Bord Pleanala himself (three times over)”, all recommending against approval for this entire project and insisting on discharge outside of the tidal estuary.

“We were reminded again that the Environmental Impact Statement presented by Donegal County Council is an affront to the aims and objectives of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive.

“We believe that the justice of our case and the strength of our evidence remains beyond question and despite the David and Goliath dimensions of this dispute, remain committed to opposing the determination of Donegal County Council to force this plant and outfall into Lough Foyle, against all reasoned argument in our opinion.

“We owe it to future generations to protect the Foyle Estuary and ensure that the wellbeing of the Foyle is the foundation for future economic opportunities for our community.”

Mr Craig added: “We hope to shortly call a meeting of all interested parties in the campaign to provide full information and answer any questions.

“We are currently in process of constructing a website covering the entire matter and look forward to announcing details of this initiative in the near future.”

Donegal is to escape the worst of Ireland’s freezing conditions.snow Annagry

Although there have been some flurries of light snow across the county earlier, we will escape the worst according to Met Eireann.

Up to 6cms of snow is forecast to fall across the east coast tonight including counties Dublin, Meath and Kildare.

However the forecast for Donegal up until this weekend continues to be freezing conditions but very little snow.

Temperatures are set to continue to plunge below freezing overnight.

The daytime temperatures across the county are not expected to get above a chilly 3 degrees.

Coal and oil distributors have reported an increase in sales despite the time of year because of the plunge in temperatures.

People have been asked to call in on elderly neighbours to ensure that they have adequate supplies and heat during this cold snap.

AMERICAN COPS KNOW EXACTLY WHO KILLED LITTLE MARY – CLAIM

American cops say they believe they know exactly who killed little Co Donegal schoolgirl Mary Boyle.MARY BOYLE

New York Police Department officers have taken an interest in the case of the Mary who was just seven years old when she went missing in 1977.

The officers have visited Cashelard outside Ballyshannon where Mary was last seen and informally interviewed a number of people about the case.

Mary’s cousin, singer Margo O’Donnell, told Donegal Daily that American officers told her they have identified the person they believe killed the young girl.

“The NYPD are very positive about the person they believe was responsible for Mary’s disappearance.

“In fact, they say they are 100% positive they know the person who killed Mary.

“Personally I am not pointing the finger at anyone. But they believe they know who did it,” she said.

Margo says she understands the NYPD officers have also discussed the case with Gardai and offered their opinions to them.

Mary was along with her twin sister Ann and family, who had been visiting relatives from their home in Burtonport when she vanished.

Margo said she now feels this could be the last throw of the dice in finding where Mary is buried.

And she said the time has now gone for people to be afraid to speak up against whoever was responsible for killing Mary.

“The time for pussy-footing around this case is over.

“This could be the last throw of the dice in finding Mary’s body. I would ask anybody who knows anything to come forward.

“Mary’s family have had to endure a living nightmare all these years.

“All they want now is for Mary to be found and for them to be able to give her a proper burial and to be able to visit her grave,” she said.

Asked if she thought the person responsible for Mary’s death was still alive she said “I do.”

LYIT STUDENTS PREPARE FOR TRIP TO INDIA TO HELP POVERTY STRICKEN WIDOWS AND ORPHANS

In June this year, a team from the Department of Nursing and Health Studies at LYIT will be going to Ponducherry in South East India to work alongside a vulnerable community, comprising mostly of widows and orphans, who currently live in a slum with no sanitation or substantial shelter.

This is the Department’s fourth trip with Habitat for Humanity. In 2010 a team of 17 visited Mulange in Malawi the third poorest country in the world, while teams of five (2011) and nine (2012) visited Kaniki, Zambia completing a total of six houses.

The trip is part of the Department of Nursing & Health Studies at LYIT’s ongoing relationship with Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village project.

Habitat for Humanity is a charity based on the premise that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.

The nursing students, all in their third year, said that despite study and exams, they felt motivated to volunteer for the project.

The students have to raise €3000 for their trip to build houses. Speaking about their trip Niamh Fleming from Mayo is “excited” about travelling to India to meet the community she says,

“Fundraising has been tough because of the recession but also because some people believe that India is now a rich country.”

“Whilst parts of India are indeed flourishing there remain vast areas of extreme poverty where basic living amenities and standards are way below the norm, that’s why we’re going.”

Elaine Coleman another Mayo volunteer says she wants to make a small contribution to poorer communities and to widen her life experience,

“This is a lifetime’s opportunity to experience a world which is inconceivable to us, I hope we can give some practical help, I want to travel to poorer countries which will help me apply my nursing skills in the future.”

As part of the trip the group will be visiting 2 health centres to gain an understanding of nursing practice in an area of extreme social and economic deprivation.

Whilst they’re in India, however, most of their time will be spent on the hard graft of building.

Some of the challenges the LYIT team will face are: very high temperatures, a new environment/culture, extreme poverty, the emotional impact and lack of supplies explains Mary Dunnion, LYIT Lecturer,

“but every time we make these trips we are always humbled by the welcome and generosity of the people we meet.”

When questioned about their motivation Tony McGilloway a Nursing mature student from Dunfanaghy, says, it’s about giving something back.

“Really, it’s not about being a ‘do-gooder’, you get real satisfaction doing something practical like building houses, which can make such a dramatic difference to the quality of someone’s life.”

“I’ve volunteered previously and it sounds very selfish but you get so much more back from the experience and the people you meet.”

Siobhan Carey from Sligo adds,

“It’s exciting and scary but ultimately you want to help and Habitat offers a very tangible way to do something which will last for a long time.”

One of the students Sean Gallagher who’s from Dungloe will be keeping a daily blog and diary of his experience,

“I want to let people who have donated money know how it’s being used on a daily basis through Facebook. It’s a way of bringing everyone in on our experience. I think overall this trip will make us realise how lucky we are.”

The group is still fundraising and donations can be given to Mary Dunnion on 074 9186395.

DONEGAL MAN RECEIVES OFFER FROM GOVERNMENT OF BUS JOB – IN MALTA

Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty has called on Social Protection Minister Joan Burton to clarify if it is the policy of her department to seek low paid jobs abroad for unemployed Irish people.pearse doherty

Deputy Doherty was speaking today after being contacted by a 60-year-old constituent who had been notified by the minister’s department of a bus drivers’ job in Malta paying €250 a week.

He said “I find it outrageous that a government department would ask a 60-year-old man with a mortgage to apply for a job in Malta that pays lower than the minimum wage here. If the man were to get the job he would have obvious extra costs such as rent and travel while trying to pay his mortgage at home.

“Even the promise of a tan in the ‘typically Mediterranean’ climate could not make this job a viable option for this man.

“Minister Burton must clarify if it is the policy of her department to seek low paid jobs abroad for unemployed Irish workers. Is the government now actively encouraging emigration?

“It is my understanding that there are 200 positions available at the company referred to in the letter from the Department of Social Welfare. How many more unemployed people have been encouraged to apply for these low paid jobs?

“I will be raising this issue directly with the minister at the earliest opportunity.”

mark mchugh THE DONEGAL County Board’s success in staging the Ulster Championship clash with Tyrone in Ballybofey is expected to pay rich dividends – all 18,000 tickets are expected to sell out.

The Board are already discussing how they deal with a frenzied rush on tickets for the clash.

But for the player it’s a rich reward for all their hard work.

Mark McHugh reflected the feelings of all the players on the Ulster Council’s decision to refuse Tyrone’s bid to switch the match to their own back yard in Clones.

“We are delighted, it’s a big lift to us. It is something we have been pushing for since we first heard the draw,” said Mark

“We felt we deserved the game to be in Ballybofey, us being All-Ireland champions, so we are delighted.

“Championship training starts next Tuesday and we’ll be fully focused on it and everything we do from now will be concentrating on Tyrone.

“I think we half expected it maybe to go to Clones. The majority of people seemed to think Ballybofey was too small. But I think Ballybofey will hold 18,000 now so there will be a great atmosphere on the day.

“The last number of years we have been away from home in the preliminary round. So it is good to get back to Ballybofey. For the local people of Donegal, it will bring a bit of a boost to the economy. There is going to be a lot of hype building up to it.”

Certainly local businesses are delighted.

A spokesman for Jackson’s Hotel told us: “There’s already quite a few enquiries about rooms that weekend. It’s great for the town and it’s great for Donegal.”

It is the same at the Villa Rose where only a handful of rooms are left for the last weekend in May.

Throw-in is currently 4pm on May 26 – subject to change by TV companies, with both BBC and RTE wanting to cover the match.

FAMILIES IN SHOCK AS WIND TURBINES AT CRASH SITE TURNED ON AGAIN

The scene of the turbine crash. Local residents are angry

DD Exclusive: FAMILIES living beside a wind farm were in shock last night after turbines on a crash site were turned back on – without any consultation.

North West Wind Ltd, whose shareholders include Crolly man John Gillespie, turned on the eight remaining turbines at the Loughderryduff site near Maas last night.

A ninth turbine crashed in 80km/hr winds last Friday – a wind level below the ‘shut down’ limit set by manufacturers Vestas.

The companies have admitted that they still don’t know what caused the accident which sent debris flying over a wide area close to a local road.

Despite this, the remaining eight turbines were back operating last night.

One local resident contacted Donegal Daily and fumed: “We thought the wind turbines would be off until some sort of announcement on the cause of the incident at the weekend was made.

“They don’t know what happened, yet eight other turbines are back on.

“Vestas and North West Wind need to make a public statement.

“It’s not good enough for it to start generating power again and for local people to be left in the dark. In fact it’s outrageous.”

Another woman who lives off the Tullies Road where the incident happened told us: “I drive past that site ten times every day and I am terrified that the one closest to the road will collapse some day and send a rotary blade crashing through my car.

“We want assurances from Vestas that this won’t happen again.

“I lost my breath when I saw the turbines back on again; we are living in fear.”

Meanwhile county councillors who have backed a county development plan with no setback restrictions on future wind farms could not be contacted last night for comment.
