The Seniors won an all-important league match against the in-form Fanad Gaels in the Banks in glorious sunshine onSunday afternoon in a match which they controlled throughout even though they allowed a big lead to narrow. Fanad, in determined mood to keep their battle against the drop on course were strong physical opponents but the lads were very impressive each time Fanad Gaels came back and were able to get the crucial scores at the end of some good passages of play. Great result, well done to all.

There was yet another impressive win for the Reserves which sees them secure their top of table place with their near rivals at the top Cloich Cheann Fhaola losing on Sunday. This mix of experience and youth have been increasingly impressive all season and they are a pleasure to watch in full flow. Like the Seniors, they will want more for next weeks visit by Termon in the Championship but the talent and determination is there in abundance.

DONEGAL ROAD SAFETY GROUP ISSUE APPEAL AFTER DRAMATIC INCREASE IN DEATHS

$

The recently published review by the RSA and Garda Siochana on road fatalities to date in 2015 is predicting that up to 100 people could be killed on our roads by the end of the year if the current trend continues.Garda Accident

With 20 people killed on the roads in July, the worst month for road fatalities so far this year, this is a worrying increase.

If this increase continues there will be up to 100 families dealing with the loss of a loved one before the end of 2015 but by taking responsibility for our actions and working together we can prevent this from happening.

Figures recently released show that 15 drivers and 4 passengers killed in road traffic collisions were not wearing seatbelts. The painful reality is that some of the 19 people killed would be alive if they had only taken the few seconds it takes to clip on their seatbelt.

All road users have long been warned that road traffic accidents don’t just happen – they are caused. Bad decisions, taking risks and reckless behaviour on the roads costs lives. 102 people have lost their lives to date in 2015.

Brian O’Donnell, Road Safety Officer with Donegal County Council is urging all road users to stay safe, wear the appropriate safety clothing at all times when cycling and walking.

“Slow down, never drive having consumed alcohol or drugs. Be aware of the warning signs of driver fatigue, know the risks and keep yourself and your family safe. Always wear your seatbelt and never use your mobile phone while driving. With the return to school only a short time away, parents should make road safety a priority in their Back to School preparations,” he said.

RUGBY: LETTERKENNY AND DONEGAL TOWN ENJOY WORTHWHILE FRIENDLY

Donegal Town were under pressure in the scrum

Donegal Town were under pressure in the scrum

Letterkenny entertained Donegal Town in a pre-season friendly match on Friday night at Dave Gallaher Park.

Throughout the friendly warm up fixture both teams made numerous changes and Letterkenny fielded a youthful side with many players from last year’s successful u18 side making their senior rugby debuts.

Letterkenny started brightly with seasoned campaigner Rae Clarke leading the way with some great ball carries. Momentum was continued in the loose by strong running by David McClean and Ben Mortimer in particular. Eoghan O’Riain and Ryan Mortimer formed the half back partnership and looked very comfortable controlling the game from the excellent platform given to them by the forwards.

Letterkenny amassed 35 un-answered points as Captain Terence Gallagher opened the scoring and further tries came at regular intervals. Encouraging to see was the first instinct of the Letterkenny back 3 of Cian Curran, Eoin Friel and Evan Walsh to always counter attack with the ball in hand. Try of the night went to Evan Walsh, making his senior debut, who finished off a sublime backline move to cross the line, something he failed to do all last season for the u18’s.

As the game progressed the Letterkenny scrum became more dominant against their heavier opponents and Donegal Town lineouts were increasingly disrupted by Mortimer and Dermot Dunleavy.

Donegal Town had some periods of pressure and made inroads through their more experienced backline. However, resolute defending inside the 22, most notably by Gary Canning and Craig Heron kept the visitors at bay.

Further tries were scored by Ben Mortimer and David McLean as the visiting side tired towards the end of the game and debutant Caombhin MacLochlainn rounded off the scoring with a fine run from inside the Letterkenny half and break through the Town defence. Out-half Ryan Mortimer converted all five tries to ice the cake.

Overall 1st XV captain Terence Gallagher and Coach Collie Farrell would have been very happy with the attitude and work rate on and off the ball displayed by his players in their first outing of the season.

Pre-season training continues on Tuesday evenings at the club from 6.30pm and Thursdays at Adam Spear’s superb new facility in New Mills, all new and returning players will be made most welcome.

Letterkenny General Hospital

The purpose of the meeting was to receive feedback and re-evaluate progress made since the previous meeting held on 27 February last, regarding action to be taken to develop/progress breast cancer services in Letterkenny General Hospital.

“It was a robust meeting. Firm commitment was given from Minister Varadkar and the Saolta Group to strengthen systematic breast cancer services in LGH in a manner that will be sustainable into the future.

"It was agreed that the Saolta Group would continue with their internal dialogues to advance support to Letterkenny services and integration within the dedicated cancer unit.

"It was acknowledged that progress has been made since the February meeting, whilst at the same time it was recognised that there is still much work to do.

Hay - did you see this car?!

Hay - did you see this car?!

It's tough times for Donegal farmers.

So instead of fuelling up the tractor to fetch a bit of hay, this farmer decided to take things on the hop.

The car was parked outside Foy's Home Decor in Letterkenny this week.

We're not sure if the driver was getting a lick of paint or some curtains for the car, but hay, it was a bit of craic.

GAA: Naomh Muire are hoping that this weekend they can earn their very first Donegal SFC win when they host Termon at The Banks on Saturday night. naomh muire rossesGary Boyle's side were defeated by Kilcar in their opening group game and they need to beat Termon on their own patch this weekend to keep their championship hopes alive.

Termon have been in fine form this year and sit top of Division Two and look odds-on to gain promotion back to the top tier of Donegal football.

Termon earned a narrow win over Killybegs in their group opener and know a victory against Naomh Muire will see them through to the knockout stages of the Donegal SFC.

Naomh Muire should have a fully fit squad to choose from on Saturday night.

Paul 'The Yank' Boyle had been struggling with a hamstring injury but he retuned to play a half in their win over Fanad Gaels last Sunday.

His brother Hugh Boyle also returned against Fanad Gaels on Sunday after sitting out the u21 game against Dungloe the previous week.

Termon have a team of seasoned campaigners and are always a tough opponent in championship football.

With Daire McDaid and Christy Connaghan they have two quality match winners inside.

Naomh Muire have two match winners in the form of Shaun 'The Yank' Boyle and Harry Harden and there's very little to choose between the two sides.

With home advantage and with them desperate to earn their maiden win in senior championship football Naomh Muire might just edge against Termon.

Verdict: Naomh Muire
