James O'Malley stole two box-sets of Breaking Bad.

A man facing a string of offences went out during a court lunch-break and stole two box-sets of hit television series Breaking Bad - to help pay off a drug debt.

James O'Malley appeared at Letterkenny District Court on a list of charges but had his case adjourned until the afternoon court sitting.

However when the 21 year old returned before Judge Paul Kelly, he had been rearrested.

The court heard how O'Malley had visited the local Xtravision Store and stole two box-sets of the hit Netflix show.

The absent-minded thief was caught by Gardai a few minutes later after he tried to get cash for the boxset at a local exchange shop - after he had forgotten to take the original store's tags off.

His solicitor Patsy Gallagher revealed "When Gardai got the call of the theft at Xtravision, they knew exactly where to go and found him trying to sell the box-set at this store."

Mr Gallagher said his client, of 51 Westside Apartments, Letterkenny, had a difficult background and had a drug problem but was trying to get clean.

He said he was stealing on occasions as he had a drug debt and he was trying to pay it off.

O'Malley, faced a number of charges including criminal damage, engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour, public order and theft.

Judge Paul Kelly sentenced O'Malley to a total of eight months in prison for all the offences.

Letterkenny General Hospital.

Letterkenny General Hospital.

Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, has condemned crisis in Letterkenny General Hospital which he said has huge numbers of people waiting prolonged periods time to access a hopsital bed.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn said people in Donegal are very angry with the government's failure or unwillingness to tackle the crisis in the A&E department in Letterkenny.

The Sinn Fein politician said "People, young and old, are waiting for tortuous lengths of time to be treated.

Deputy Mac Lochlainn

Deputy Mac Lochlainn

"It is not good enough for Leo Varadkar to say that the government is improving the health service as we haven't seen any dividend from this.

"The real solution is hiring extra staff. The Minister for Health is very good at spin but very poor at direct action to solve the overcrowding crisis. His inaction is putting patient’s lives at risk and taking away the dignity of those at their most vulnerable."

He added a campaign is now needed to force the minister to do the right thing act to address this crisis.

"All politicians must unite on this issue and work with community campaign groups to secure greater investment in our hospital.

"My colleague, Cllr Jack Murray will move a motion in Donegal County Council on Monday calling for action from government and I would ask all representatives in Donegal to support him with that."

Deputy Mac Lochlainn concluded by praising the staff in the hospital;

"Despite the great stress that many patients experience, they have nothing but praise for the staff in Letterkenny Hospital who do a fantastic job with stretched resources. These nurses and doctors are a credit and they deserve to get the additional resources and staffing support that they need."

Gardai are hunting a gang disguised as Gardai and calling on the homes of elderly people pretending to be checking forged money.

The gang have already called to a number of homes in the Glenfin area of the county.

The two man gang, who were dressed in suits, pretended to be detectives, after calling tot he home of one elderly man.Garda crime

The conmen asked the man if he had cash in the house and when he produced more than €700 in cash, they asked to go outside to examine the money in more detail in daylight.

However, as they were counting the money, a neighbour arrived and the men returned the money and left.

The men were traveling in a green Toyota Avensis with a partial registration of 01 KY.

Garda Crime Prevention  officer, Sgt Paul Wallace, appealed to people to ask for identification when people called to their homes.

"This incident showed the benefit of neighbours calling on each other. Only for this neighbour called, I have no doubt this money or some of it would have been stolen.

"If anybody sees this car or these men operating out of it, they should contact their local Garda station immediately," he said.

The investigation is part of the Garda's Operation Thor which aims to crackdown on rural crime.

Finn Harps supporters will be left reeling from the news that midfielder Josh Mailey is currently on trial with Derry City.

New Derry City manager Kenny Shiels will run the rule over a number of players in a friendly with Institute FC tonight.

One of the players he will be having a watchful eye over is Josh Mailey who only helped Harps to promotion earlier this month.

Mailey scored a goal in Harps play-off win over UCD -which was subsequently a contender for Goal of the Year on RTE's League of Ireland programme Soccer Republic.

Mailey enjoyed a fine game against Limerick in Finn Park - a match Harps won 2-0 to secure top-flight football.

He would've have been one of the first player Ollie Horgan would've tied down for next season.

His versatility has resulted in Ollie Horgan using him in several positions including right-back, wing-back, centre-half and centre-midfield over the last two season.

However, Kenny Shiels was keen to get a look at him - and Mailey has been named in his starting XI which plays Institute this evening.

Harps fans will be hoping Ollie Horgan can get Mailey to the negotiating table and get his signature for the 2016 Premier Division campaign.

Neil Gallagher could be in action for LYIT tomorrow in their All-Ireland semi-final with St Pat's.

Donegal star Neil Gallagher could line out for the LYIT GAA team for their All-Ireland semi-final against St Pat's tomorrow evening.

LYIT manager Eamon O'Boyle may be able to call on the services of Gallagher who is back studying part-time at the college.

Gallagher works for the Donegal County Council - but the influential midfielder has returned to the LYIT to study part-time.

If he does lineout his presence would be a massive boost for O'Boyle's side in their quest to reach the All-Ireland final.

Jack O'Brien, Hugh Boyle, Willie Gillespie, Callum Gallagher (captain) Conal O'Boyle and the McDaid brother will be crucial for O'Boyle's side if they're to beat a highly fancied St Pat's side.

St Pat's will compete in the prestigious Sigerson Cup competition and will be a formidable force.

Donegal star Hugh McFadden is expected to lineout for the Dublin based teaching college.

The game will be played at the Monaghan Centre of Excellence tomorrow at 5pm.

REVIEW AFTER DONEGAL FARMERS REFUSED BENEFITS WIN APPEALS

Deputy Pringle

Deputy Pringle

THE Department of Social Protection has promised a review after 16 Donegal farmers refused benefits were later given them after an appeal.

Donegal TD Thomas Pringle raised the issue in the Dáil with Minister Joan Burton who indicated a review will be carried out within her Department.

The anomalies came to the attention of the Deputy when part-time farmers across Donegal from Gleann Cholmcille to Donegal Town were consistently refused Farm Assist and Jobseekers’ Benefit but were awarded payments in the appeal process.

“Personally, I have dealt with 17 different appeals cases after part-time farmers came to me wondering why they were refused in the first place," said Pringle.

“All bar one have been upheld as the individual having an entitlement to Jobseekers or Farm Assist. That means something is clearly wrong in the Department but it is particularly worrying as Donegal has the second highest number of Farm Assist recipients in the country. This payment is very important for farmers here’ says Pringle.

“After dealing with each case, a pattern emerged and I realised these people were wrongly labelled as self-employed at first contact with their local office, even though they are not self-employed.

“I raised this with Minister Burton as an urgent matter and while she indicated that the policy has not changed, they are in the process of issuing guideline to Deciding Officers providing greater clarity in relation to who is entitled to Jobseekers’ and Farm Assist” says Pringle.

“While I welcome any review, I do feel that too many people have missed out on vital income supports because of this mislabelling. Most were awarded the payment upon appeal but some farmers were seriously struggling as a result.

“I wonder how many other farmers have been refused but are unaware they were affected by these anomalies” concludes Pringle.

A lunchtime protest has been organised for today the LYIT in Letterkenny to draw attention to lecturers’ grave concerns over a number of issues within their sector.

Regular service to students will not be affected by the protest.

The protest is part of a nationwide campaign.

Speaking today, Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) Vice-President Joanne Irwin, said lecturers see first-hand the damage that an era of austerity cuts has wreaked on the education system.

"We are gravely concerned by the severe effects that these cutbacks are having on the quality of experience for students in Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

"Lecturers and researchers will be balloted by TUI in the coming weeks on engagement in a campaign of industrial action, up to and including strike action, in order to secure a resolution to key issues.

"Institutes of technology are regional generators of innovation and entrepreneurship and need to be appropriately funded in order to kick-start jobs growth and build high level knowledge capacity to meet the future needs of the economy. The local economy would also be greatly boosted by such investment.

"The TUI is advocating more substantial and strategic budgets to support the regional mission of the Institutes and boost economic recovery at a local level.
We are urging that lecturers, students and all concerned in the locality make this an election issue in the coming months.’

The areas of concern include:

The chronic underfunding of the Institutes of Technology (35% cut to sector- €190m – between 2008 and 2015)

The critically low staffing levels at a time of a steep and ongoing increase in student numbers and the consequential unacceptable workload imposition on lecturers.

- 21,411 or 32% rise in student numbers in sector between 2008 and 2015

- 535 or 9.5% fall in full-time academic staff numbers in sector between 2008 and 2015.

The precarious employment status, income poverty and associated exploitation of many academic staff and

The resulting, detrimental effect of these issues on the quality of service to students (larger class sizes, less access to laboratories, tutorials, student support etc
