Gardai are at the scene of another serious car smash at a notorious accident blackspot in Letterkenny.

Another car is involved in an accident at Glencar, Letterkenny.

A female driver has escaped serious injury after she lost control of her car at Black’s Bridge in the Glencar area of the town.

The accident happened just after 2pm as some children were leaving school.

Only this week Letterkenny Town Council finally promised €25,000 to improve road safety in the area.

It comes after more than 20 crashes in recent months on the lethal stretch of road.

The improvements include speed ramps and more signage on the road.

One local resident told Donegal Daily this afternoon that the road safety improvements cannot come quickly enough.

“This is just another reminder that these measures cannot come quick enough. We have been lucky than of the more than 20 crashes, nobody has been really seriously hurt.

“We are grateful the council is taking this matter seriously but we need the safety measures to be implemented as quickly as possible.

“With each passing day motorists and pedestrians are taking the lives in their hands on this blackspot,” he said.

The community of Burtonport have expressed their disappointment and anger after local signage for a railway walk was vandalised.

The sign for the Burtonport Railway Walk was erected recently at a cost of €200 to the local people of the area.

But the signage was ripped form its post this week at Acres, Burtonport.

“It’s just so sad to watch something that is supported by 100s of community members and visitors alike, and which our community have collectively worked so hard on in terms of development and fundraising, get torn apart by mindless acts of thuggery,” said a spokesman.

The section of reclaimed railway track has been developed into a beautiful walkway. and extends from Burtonport to Meenbanad and is approx 6.5 miles / 10.46 km return.

The monsters of the deep have been spotted off the coast of Donegal.

The county’s coastline enjoys a major number of Basking Sharks who visit the north-west each year.

The creatures, which can grow up to 13 metres long, usually begin arriving long before now.

But the cold weather has meant that the shark’s main source of food, plankton, has been missing form the sea.

But the good news is that there have been the first sightings of sharks off Inishowen on April 6th.

Basking Shark co-ordinator Emmett Johnson said the sightings should be the first of many to come as temperatures begin to rise.

IT WAS US! TWIN TOWNS COUPLE GET THEIR HANDS ON €5,146,800 LOTTO CHEQUE!

lottoIt was all smiles in National Lottery offices today when the winners of last Saturday’s Lotto jackpot of €5,146,800 collected their big prize.

The winning married couple, who live in the locality, are from Co. Donegal and purchased their lucky ticket in Moore’s Costcutters store in Ballybofey on Saturday, the day of the draw.

It was a €4 ticket, and the lucky wife, who purchased the ticket in Costcutters, used the numbers she’s been playing for a long time, made up of family birthdays.

This win is the second highest Lotto jackpot win in Donegal. The biggest jackpot was on 25 January 2012 when the jackpot was €5.48M and the winners were from Derry. The lucky ticket on that occasion was purchased in the Top Shop in Killea, Donegal.

Today’s ‘delighted’ couple, who do not wish their win to be public, did not get too excited when they realised their good fortune on Saturday last.

“I was watching the draw on Saturday night and I had the ticket in my hand,” said the lucky wife.

“After the draw, I asked my husband to check the numbers but as he hadn’t seen the draw, he didn’t know what numbers won!

“I thought I had to have the bonus ball to win the jackpot, so I checked the numbers on Aertel later on that night and then I saw in the results that I had the winning ticket. The two of us were a bit disbelieving about it all, but we went to bed at the normal time, told no one, and slept soundly all night,”  smiled the lucky lady.

She continued: “Next day, at Mass in Stranorlar, everyone was speculating about who had won the Lotto. I joined in the speculation, but didn’t tell a soul. Sunday was spent the same way it always is: I cooked our dinner and we relaxed in the afternoon. We didn’t want to come down to Dublin on Monday to collect so we waited until today but it didn’t bother us at all.”

The couple had plans for spending their win, which included some unusual thoughts.

“We’d like to give some donations to charities which do good work. Included in that group will be the Simon Community in Letterkenny; the Capuchin Fathers and Fr. Peter McVerry’s charity’.

“For myself, I’d love to buy a Camper Van and travel around a bit. We’ve only been out of the country once before. But I’d need to take driving lessons before I buy the van, because I’ve never driven anything in my life!’ laughed the lucky Donegal woman as she finished her glass of champagne in National Lottery offices.

TRIBUTES FLOW IN FOR LATE POLITICAL GIANT BERNARD MCGLINCHEY

The Fianna Fail party whip in Donegal, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, has led tributes to the late Bernard McGlinchey.Unknown

The political giant, who spent 50 years in local and national politics, passed away at his home in Blue Banks, Kilmacrennan last night aged 80 years.

Cllr Brogan said he doubts if Donegal or Ireland will see the likes of Bernard McGlinchey again.

“He was perhaps a one-off and I doubt if Donegal or Ireland will see the calibre of politician again.

“Everyone in Fianna Fail and beyond is saddened by the passing of Bernard because he touched so many people during his 50 years in politics.

“He did so much for the development of Donegal and its people that it will be almost impossible to measure.

“I think the people of Donegal will remember Bernard McGlinchey for all the positive things he did for the county and for the passion and compassion he had for people,” he said.

But it wasn’t just his own Fianna Fail party members who paid tribute to the former Senator.

Current Labour Party Senator Jimmy Harte said Mr McGlinchey was a huge help to him when he first entered politics.

“I would like to pay my sympathies to the the Mc Glinchey family on the death of Bernard.

” I served on Letterkenny Town Council and Donegal County Council with Bernard and like him I am serving in Seanad Eireann. He was an immense figure in Letterkenny and was foremost a Letterkenny man and a Fianna Fáil man second.

“I must say that as a young Councillor on Letterkenny Town Council he was helpful and a source of knowledge on local affairs.

“Whilst we did not always agree politically we were at one when it came to progressing the development of Letterkenny.

“He was a formidable politican on Donegal County Council and had a encyclopaedic knowledge of the workings in the council.

“I always had an admiration for Bernard as he was a successful businessman and a tough political animal.

He will be missed by Kathleen and his family. May He Rest In Peace,” said Senator Harte.

Another local councillor who often crossed swords with Mr McGlinchey during his time on Letterkenny Urban District Council was former Independent Councillor PJ Blake.

Again he said they didn’t always agree but never fell out for long.

“He had his own ideas and always had conviction which he followed through on. That’s what made him a great politician.

“Of course we fell out but we always had the good of Letterkenny at heart and that’s what he will be remembered for – all the good things he did and was involved in” he said.

Dr James McDaid said he cannot begin to pay tribute to the huge contribution made by Mr McGlinchey to Donegal life.

“He was the most influential person along with Noel McGinley to get me into politics.

“I was on duty at Nowdoc and happened to be on when he died. I met the family and I would like to express my sympathy to them.

“He was an icon in Donegal politics and was here long before I was here.

“You didn’t want to be opposite sides. We did have a bit of a split but I always maintain that politics is not worth losing friends over.

“He was very generous to me and to neighbours and a lot of people didn’t see that side of him.

“I would call out to see him and he was getting weaker and the handshake was weaker but I was still surprised when he passed away,” he said.

Pat The Cope Gallagher, MEP, said he had known the late Bernard McGlinchey for a long time – even before politics.

He said everyone turned to Bernard McGlinchey for advice.

“His word was his bond and that is the one thing I will remember about Bernard McGlinchey.

“I think he will be best-remmebered to the contribution he made to the health service. He was totally opposed to the centralisation of the health service and I think he has now been proven right,” he said.

GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO CUT OUT NONSENSE FOR STRUGGLING FAMILIES – HARVEY

$

Sinn Fein county councillor Cora Harvey has told the Government to “cut out the nonsense” when it comes to struggling families.Cora Harvey

The Ballybofey-based councillor was commenting on the decision to cut Exceptional Needs Payments for struggling families.

She criticised the decision to abolish the provision of exceptional needs payments on the eve of children making communion and confirmation and states there could have been another way.

“Again this is another example of the Government saving a quick buck at the expense of our children and an example of budget cuts coming in through the back door 5 months after the budget was announced.

“Whilst I don’t condone lavish expenditure for these celebrations I feel there needs to more of a societal change in the interest of equality and for the Sacraments themselves prior to decisions such as this. Religious Sacraments and how we celebrate them are not knew, and they are important, the Government had plenty of time to plan for saving the approx 1.5 million. (which this grant cost last year)

“For families the reality will be a case of “all dressed up and no were to go” as many children return to cold houses and beans on toast, because there is such pressure to keep up appearances and parents don’t want their children stigmatised,” she said.

She said she accepted children want to be the same as their peers and parents will do everything to ensure their child does not look out of place.

But the reality is that families cannot afford these lavish celebrations whether one was entitled to the grant or not because even those who are not entitled to the grant are struggling when you look at the mortgage arrears and rate of unemployment there are a lot more families out there who find this time of year a burden than those 12,500 who availed last year of the grant, she said.

“I feel schools should be recommended from the Department to encourage children to receive the sacrament in their School Uniforms and then what they do after that is up to the individual families. Or if tradition is important and the white dress ritual is desired then simplicity and creativity should be encouraged – schools / communities could be helped to supply dresses and returned each year and a minimal laundry fee.

“What I am saying is, things are changing, our economy has changed and so to should our practice and traditions. According to a survey carried out by EBS parents expect to spend an average of €573.00 on First Communions this year, that is ridiculous and we cant afford that, the nonsence needs to be cut before the Grant.

“This cut will make a difference in children and that is not fair – more engagement with schools and parishes around the planning of the religious ceremonies should have been encouraged and a lead in time allowed then abolish the grant if need be, but in the meantime if the Government are hell bent on saving the 1.5 million then take a proposal from the Sinn Fein Budget Measures – which will not target the poor.”

When Hollywood meets Letterkenny! Saoirse, dad Paul and new friends from Donegal!

A group of young Donegal actors were left star-struck when Hollywood star Saoirse Ronan paid them a surprise visit.

Teenagers at the An Grianan Youth Theatre in Letterkenny were literally left speechless when The Lonely Bones star dropped by.

Saoirse was accompanied by her dad and agent Paul Ronan.

Paul is friendly with An Grianan Youth Theatre Co-ordinator Ronan Carr who arranged the shock visit.Saoirse1

And instead of just visiting the young actors and signing autographs, Saoirse and Paul delivered a workshop for the delighted students.

Daithi Ramsay of An Grainan Theatre said it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the young stage students.

And he had nothing but praise for the young Dublin starlet’s approach to her fellow actors.

“She was so down-to-earth and just got stuck in with the rest of the students.

“She passed on some great information including how to approach a script and Paul was just so helpful.

“There was no airs or graces with them and everyone got on so well with them because they took the time to help everyone,” he said.

But although Saoirse may have shocked the young acting students, they managed to get their own revenge.

The group learned that Saoirse turned 19 today and presented the slightly-embarrassed star with a cake for the occasion.

“It was the perfect end to a perfect day and we are so indebted to both Saoirse and Paul and to Ronan for organising the visit,” added Daithi.

Saoirse helped put the group through their paces for their upcoming showcases on Wednesday, 15th May which will include An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and Johnny Baluba Teenage Detective by Ronan Carr. The Youth Theatre is run by An Grianán Theatre and is affiliated to the National Association for Youth Drama.

Saoirse told the students she would love to return for the youth theatre’s end-of-year drama presentation but may have to film instead.

FIANNA FAIL LEADER MICHEAL MARTIN IN BERNARD McGLINCHEY TRIBUTE

UnknownFianna Fáil Leader, Micheál Martin TD, has expressed his sympathy on the death of former Senator Bernard McGlinchey.

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernard McGlinchey. Bernard’s record in public life was a remarkable one. Bernard served in Seanad Éireann for over 20 years and in that time had a significant impact on Irish politics and public life. He also had an extraordinary record in local government, serving for over 50 years as a Councillor in Donegal,” said the party leader.

“His commitment to local government and to the advancement of his county was immense.

“Bernard also worked diligently for, and was a very effective member of, the North Western Health Board with a particular interest in the development of community health initiatives.

“He supported many other public representatives and gave them great help and guidance, many of whom later went on to become members of Dáil Éireann and government ministers. Bernard also sought to improve the quality of life of the people he represented.

“Bernard’s contribution to Fianna Fáil was immense and his role in guiding Fianna Fáil in Donegal North East over many years and during successive elections was truly skilled and inspirational. He was towering figure within our party in Donegal for decades, someone who made a real impact and difference and someone who will be missed.

“I know he will also be deeply missed in Donegal and across the country.

“On behalf of myself and the Fianna Fáil party I would like to extend my sympathies to Bernard’s family and friends.

IRELAND’S NEW DEBT DEAL JUST ‘STICKING PLASTER’– DOHERTY

$

pearse dohertySinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has said the decision to extend the maturities on Ireland’s loans amounts to “putting a sticking plaster on a gaping wound”.

He said the government must not be left off the hook on the issue of separating banking and sovereign debt as promised following a decision today to allow both Ireland and Portugal to extend their loan deals for a further seven years.

Deputy Doherty said: “Last month Minister Noonan was looking for a fifteen year extension. Now we understand only seven years is on offer. Unlike Greece the government has failed to get an interest holiday which would actually make a difference to people’s lives.

“Regardless of the period of the loans the fact is that Sinn Fein’s analysis of the original bailout terms as unsustainable has been proven to be correct.

“As long as there is no growth in the economy and no job creation Ireland will be threading water and reliant to some extent on outside help.

“This government has failed to follow-up on last June’s Eurogroup commitment to separate banking and sovereign debt. It has actually taken in more formal sovereign debt in the Promissory Note arrangement and has been complicit in forcing Cyprus to fend for itself. It must explain why.

“Once more, we are being exposed to government spin on Ireland’s prospects. The fact remains there has been zero progress on separating banking and sovereign and retrospectively recapitalising Ireland’s banks. As long as that is the case any measures to extend maturities amount only to a sticking plaster on a gaping wound.”

Students, parents, grandparents, staff and anyone else with an interest are invited to take part by bringing baked items to school by 9.30am next Friday morning. The hall will be used as the bakery shop for the morning and all funds raised will go directly to Temple street hospital which is hoping to raise funds to renovate their busiest ward for some of the country’s sickest children. Each class will have to chance to buy items from the bakery and the wider community is also more than welcome to join in to help us raise funds for this very worthy cause. More details can be found on www.thegreatirishbake.ie.
