The Steering Committee of the Donegal Marathon have just announced that they will be adopting a bi-lingual approach to the Donegal marathon for this year and into the future.
Committee Chairman, Mr. Dessie Larkin said the Donegal Marathon is the People’s Marathon and organisers want to reflect that by making it as inclusive as possible for all.
"We feel that taking this bilingual approach reflects the large Gaeltacht areas of our county that will become a backdrop for much of the local training programmes that will be embarked on in the coming months by competitors from all walks of life and background.”
The logo has been adapted and is now bilingual and you will notice that the signage throughout the county will also have a bilingual element.
Here are a few phrases that might serve the spectator well if you wish to encourage our brave competitors on the 24th August as they set out to conquer the course and their own personal challenges.
Keep going! = Coinnigh ag dul!
You can do it! = Is féidir leat é a dhéanamh!
You’re nearly there! = Tá tú beagnach ann!
Well done! = Maith thú!
Speaking of training programmes, Donegal Marathon will also be bringing to you in the coming months some great advice from experts in the field on many topics associated with first class preparation for such an event.
Topics will:
Provide general information on the marathon / half marathon event start times, routes, expected numbers, registration details, contact detail etc.
Meet athletes who have completed marathons and half marathons of all abilities.
Provide practical information by way of presentation and an information stand to potential participants, this info could be around planning your marathon / half marathon, training tips, clothing and footwear selection, injury management, nutrition and hydration and anything else we can fit into a couple of hours.
The committee also hope to run some of these information sessions and interested parties can discuss their queries with an expert that may be able to provide some illuminating insights and useful tips for those in training.
Now, let’s get those shoes on, stop reading, and start running! We look forward to welcoming you all at the starting line.
