DISSIDENT terrorists from Derry were behind the hoax bomb alert at Letterkenny Garda Station yesterday.
The ‘bomb’ was a fully-assembled device – complete with pipes and wires.
However it wasn’t packed with explosives.
Gardai believe the Real IRA in Derry were behind the incident because Garda detectives have been so successful working with the PSNI to bring down its group in the city.
At least five arrests since January were as a direct result of Garda work on the Donegal side of the Border.
The hoax bomb was left at Letterkenny Garda station sometime before 10am yesterday.
The station was finally opened in the afternoon after it was examined by Defence Forces experts.
It was taken away for further examination, but Defence Forces sources say it wasn’t an amateur effort.
“It was a typical Real IRA pipe bomb, but with the explosive charge deliberately left out,” said one source.
