EXCLUSIVE: GARDAI have scrapped the Glenties District six months before it was due to be done away with as part of major changes amongst senior management.
Supt Leo McGinn is leaving Donegal and being moved to Bailieboro.
His position in Ballyshannon is being taken up by Supt Michael Finan, currently based in Glenties. His position is not being replaced as Glenties District is divided between Ballyshannon, Milford and Letterkenny.
Gardai on the ground are warning that the end of the Glenties district in the county will make policing Donegal more difficult.
Elsewhere Supt Kevin English is leaving Buncrana and moving to Ballymote, Co Sligo.
He is due to be replaced by a superintendent from Dublin.
Supt Eugene McGovern will continue to run operations in the newly-expanded Milford District.
And in Letterkenny Supt Vincent O’Brien will retire next month. It’s understood he will also be replaced by a Superintendent from Dublin.
Gardai have expressed serious concerns about the scrapping of the Glenties District within the Donegal division.
“The people who take these decisions see us as a number and Donegal as a map; they’ve never actually policed in the area,” said one rank and file Garda to Donegal Daily last night.
“We will be stretching resources to breaking point.”
