GARDAI and the Road Safety Authority have warned people to take extreme care this evening as hurricane-force winds are expected to batter Co Donegal.

Met Eireann says winds of up to 130km/hr will hit the county this evening before subsiding overnight.

The winds are high enough to cause severe damage to property.

The county has already been hit by heavy rain and increasing winds this afternoon.

“But it is going to get much worse,” said a Met Eireann spokesman.

“We have issued a severe weather warning for across the west and north west for this evening. The winds cut cause damage to power lines and will be strong enough to bring down trees, especially in exposed areas.”

Gardai are warning the drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorbikes not to travel this evening.

The Road Safety Authority is also warning other motorists to take “extreme caution”.
