Enormous Basking sharks are a common sight in the waters around Donegal, with a large influx of sharks arriving off the coast in recent weeks.

Donegal native Rónán McLaughlin was on a trip to Malin Head over the weekend specifically to see if he could catch a glimpse of the animals he has been fascinated by since catching a glimpse of one as a starry eyed 12 year old boy.

25 years on and Ronan’s love for sharks has still not diminished, and over the Bank holiday weeekend in Malin he couldn’t believe his luck as he spotted over 40 basking sharks.

Ronan said,

“Basking sharks are the second largest sharks in the world and Malin Head is one of the world’s hotspot for sighting basking sharks,”

“On Sunday the weather was very calm, warm and muggy, which is perfect for shark watching at Malin Head,”

While Rónán thought he might be lucky enough to get a glimpse of a shark, he didn’t expect to see them so close or in such numbers, capturing footage of a group of 10 on Sunday, and 31 on Monday.

“Most of these could be seen with the naked eye,” he said.
