Convoy stand-off took place earlier this evening

GARDAI and residents of Convoy have prevented a Traveller family moving onto a site in the area.

The incident happened this evening when a man driving a car and towing a caravan attempted to pull onto the site near the town Garda station.

Last Friday Donegal County Council blocked off the site with concrete bollards.

Tree preservation orders were also issued after an unknown man claimed he would return at the weekend with a chainsaw to remove trees around the field, some of them 200 years old.

A large crowd gathered at the site this evening to prevent the car and caravan from driving around the bollards.

The man claimed to be the owner of the site.

However Gardai prevented him from moving any further.

“Things got quite heated,” said one eye-witness.

“A large crowd of residents were there, but gardai sorted the situation out and the man drove off. However we are expected this man to return at some stage.”

Cllr Patrick McGowan later met residents to discuss the situation.
