With the Cat.4. Golfer of the Year coming to a head shortly, it was that man again Hugh Kelly who moved into a challenging position to retain his title for the third year running
With an excellent return of 26pts played over thirteen holes. Beaten into second place on BOT was the unlucky Brian Doherty, also with 26pts.
With just a few Mondays left for cat 4 competitions,
Ciaran Clerkin,Liam Rogers,Garvin McGahey and Joe Lamb are just a few of the names who could take the title off Hugh Kelly.
Lets bring it to the wire Lads!!
Wednesday 31st Open, sponsored by Bonner Engineering, was won by the ever-improving John Doran Jnr. [15] with 45pts.
Being five over gross after only four holes, John Jnr. recorded birdies at 6th and 17th to finish level par and 38pts for the last 14 holes.
In second place was Kieran Ryan [14] finishing with 43pts which included birdies at 3rd and 10th but dropping shots at 17th to record 22pts on back nine.
In third place was the ever present Paddy Hannigan [9] who, with three birdies on the card at 4th, 6th and 14th, scored one under gross 24pts for first nine holes to finish with an overall 42pts on the card.
Gross prize was again picked up by a juvenile, this time Jamie Foley [5] with 35 gross pts [40 nett pts.], which is 73 gross shots and included no less than five birdies.
Visitors prize went to Joe Terry [10] with 35pts.
Friday 2nd saw the club host the Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce Classic and the winning team of Gerard Duffy, Enda Mannion, Greg Sullivan and club president Barry Ramsay showed the entry of over forty teams how to win with a great score of 102.
Saturday 3rd Club Open winner saw Cat. 4. member Billy Gilroy [23] spinning over the winning line by virtue of BOT with 41pts.
Despite a mis-firing start of a blank followed by a double bogey, Billy finally “revved up” his round on the back nine with a birdie at 11th and returned 24pts.
Relegated to second was no stranger to the rostrum this season, George Onofrie [12] who recorded birdies at 1st and 5th for 24pts on front nine and an overall 41pts.
In third spot, and on a rich vein of form at the moment, was Greg Sullivan [18], pairs, fourball and classic team member extraordinaire, who proved his “singles” game was also in order with 23pts on front nine which included a birdie at 5th, and an overall score of 40pts.
Sunday 4th saw the male club members playing for the Sandra Mc Monagle Lady Captain’s Prize to Gents, and standing on the winners’ rostrum was J.P. Clarke [16] with a fine return of 42pts.
Despite a disastrous start of two double bogeys and a blank at par three fifth hole, J.P. rallied to shoot no less than 37pts, two over gross from 6th-18th, which included a birdie at 11th and an eagle at 18th.
In second place was Stephen Bonner [22] by virtue of BOT with 38pts including a birdie at 18th. Relegated to third was Cat. 4. co-ordinator Gerry O’ Sullivan [18] with 38pts also, who showed the Cat. 4. members that he can play as well as organize.
Bank Holiday Monday 5th Aug. had the club host the St. Lukes Hospital Charity Open and with a large bank holiday turn-out playing in glorious sunshine it was Michael O’ Malley who returned the winning score of 42pts to win by virtue of BOT.
Despite two double bogeys on front nine, Michael managed 24pts on back nine with the help of a birdie at 11th to relegate Kevin Mills to second place.
Kevin, also recording 42pts, could not follow up on his great footing of 23pts on front nine.
In third place was single figure handicapper Ian Mc Geever [9] returning 40pts with the help of a birdie at 8th and an eagle at the par five 18th.
Club captain Henry Mc Cahey and all members of the men’s club would like to wish Lady Captain Sandra Mc Monagle all the best wishes on her Lady Captain’s Day on Saturday 10th August.

The club’s Junior League team, led by the formidable Joe Coyle and including four members of the club’s juvenile contingent under eighteen years of age, will play North-West Golf Club on Sunday coming at the Lisfannon venue in the return match of their semi-final encounter, which Letterkenny lead from the first leg seven matches to nil.

Burrowing Animal: By definition, a “burrowing animal” is an animal that digs a hole for shelter or habitation, such as a rabbit, mole, groundhog, gopher or salamander.
A hole made by a non-burrowing animal, such as a dog etc. is not an abnormal ground condition unless marked as GUR.
