Derry City Res. 1
Drumkeen’s quest for a first USL title took a knock at a rain soaked St Patrick’s Park as they lost one nil to the reigning champions. The home side started brightly and almost went in front on 8 mins when Conor Carlin delightfully controlled Packie Mailey’s long ball but the keeper saved well as the rebound fell to Carlin again but his shot from a tight angle rolled across goal. Carlin had another good chance moments later when Ronan Coyle chipped a delightful ball through but his first time shot was well blocked by the keeper. The home team continued to dominate and David Shovlin was just wide with a shot from the edge of the box. The visitors first shot of note was a tame shot from the Derry left back on 20 mins. The visitors came into the game after this and the remainder of the first half was a hard fought battle with chances at both ends hard to come by. Drumkeen home side were again on top from the restart and had a half chance on 50 mins when the keeper fumbled a harmless cross but he reacted well to get to the second ball. A min later Chris McBride was played in by Ronan Coyle but he dragged his shot wide of the far post. The home times best chance fell to Carlin when McBride crossed for Carlin but on the stretch his shot went over the bar from a few yards out. On 63 mins Michael Carroll headed a free into the box and Mark Marley headed goalwards but his effort lacked power. The visitors had a glorious chance on 65 mins when Tony McNamee cross but with the goal at his mercy no 8 missed his kick. The home team had another let off just a minute later when the keeper fumbled a tame shot but it just trickled wide. The let off was short lived as from the corner they scored with a header. Drumkeen had a chance on 75 mins when Carlin’s shot from Coyle’s ball was well saved. On 76 mins Carlin’s cross was headed straight at the keeper by Shovlin. Derry almost made it two on 79mins when the no 8 some how missed from 3 yards out. Drumkeen piled on the pressure after this but just could not get the goal they needed with Richie Moore having two good efforts blocked and Shovlin having a fine effort tipped over the bar. Best for Drumkeen Ryan Gildea, Mark Marley and Conor Carlin.
First Division Report
Swilly Rovers Res. 4
Letterkenny Rovers Res. 2
A minutes silence was reserved prior to the game in memory of Mary O Donnell wife of Letterkenny Rovers coach Liam O Donnell who sadly passed away this week. Liam played for Swilly a number of seasons ago too. This was a very entertaining local derby with the Ramelton men emerging victorious. Letterkenny were very much on top in the first twenty minutes with strikers Darren McElwaine and Jason Doherty going close. Swilly then got to grips with midfield duo James Mc Cahill and Daniel O Donnell pulling the strings for Swilly in midfield. Shay Durning with a shot cut cross was deflected home by a Letterkenny defender on 21 minutes. On the stroke of half time, Daniel O Donnell scored a penalty to put Swilly two ahead. On 71 minutes, it was three after a brilliant move Daniel O Donnell released and Liam O Donnell with a superb cross was headed home with style by Kyle Black. James Mc Cahill then hit the crossbar with a superb drive. On 82 minutes Jonny Logue released Liam O Donnell who hammered home in some style to make it four. Kristin Ferris with two fine close rang efforts reduced the deficit to two in the final four minutes. Swilly had a man dismissed on 51 minutes but held on to record an impressive victory.
