The Department of Transport has denied it is discriminating against Irish-speaking people when having their cars tested for the NCT in Gaoth Dobhair.500 new cars sold in January across Donegal

The National Car Test comes under the remit of the Road Safety Authority.

They have refuted claims by local political activist Micheál Cholm Easbui who claimed people looking to speak to personnel in Irish could not be accommodated.

However, a spokesman for the Department of Transport outlined their situation with regard to the handling of queries through Irish.

The arrangements available to have NCT in Irish include:

1. If owner has flagged a preference for Irish on NVDF record, the test reminder is sent in Irish

2. Website enquiries and bookings can be carried out in Irish

3. For telephone enquiries and bookings, the call centre has a number of Irish speakers available on request who will call the customer and deal with the booking or enquiry.

4. Test reports are available in Irish and automatically issued to owners who have flagged this as a preference

5. While it is not usual to have the actual test conducted by an Irish speaker, an Irish speaking vehicle inspector is available in Co Donegal, for example.
