DONEGAL JUNIOR LEAGUE
Brian Mc Cormick Cup
Ramelton Mariners 1 Milford United 0
The Mariners finished their Brian Mc Cormack Cup campaign with a hard earned win over close neighbours Milford in Swilly Park on Tuesday evening.
The game started brightly with Brian Pyper causing the Milford defence loads of problems. The 1st real chance fell to Paul Stevenson in the 21st minute when he blazed a shot just over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy after a neat flick from Patrick Durning.
Milford came into the game more after this with PJ Hagan and Ciaran Mc Ginley missing half chances.
The game really livened in the 2nd half when both teams started to tire. Brian Pyper missed a glorious chance at one end and PJ Hagan and Mark Flood had shots brilliantly saved by Eddie Boyce.
In the final 15 minutes it was Milford who had more in the tank and really started to exert pressure in the Mariners’ defence but all too often found Anthony Fisher, Owen Hegarty and Paul Gallagher in the Mariners’ defence outstanding.
Just as the game seemed to be heading for a draw up popped sub Ryan Campbell in the 88th minute to intercept a poor back pass from Manus Boyce and round keeper Caolan Mc Gettigan and poke the ball into the empty net.
Milford responded well with Eddie Boyce pushing a PJ Hagan rasper onto the post in injury time.
The Mariners held on for their first win of the season. Super team performance for the Mariners with Anthony Fisher and Kevin Coyle in top form.
Milford were best served by Mark Flood and PJ Hagan. Referee: Marty Mc Garrigle.
This unexpected victory for Ramelton Mariners has somewhat changed to outlook as to what way the Group will finish on Sunday evening next.
With Glencar Celtic completing their match schedule when they play Whitestrand United tonight (Thursday K.O. 6.45 p.m.) at Ballyare, both Kilmacrennan Celtic and Milford United will know the lie of the land when they go toe to toe at Moyle View Park.
Anything less than a victory is no good to Glencar Celtic. A victory would see them win the Group should Kilmacrennan Celtic fail to beat Milford United.
If Kilmacrennan Celtic defeat Milford United then they would emerge as Group winners and play Rathmullan Celtic in the Area Final on September 8th.
Should Glencar Celtic loose and Milford United defeat Kilmacrennan Celtic by three clear goals then it is the Moyle View men who will win this keenly contested Group.
Like we said previously when reporting on this Group, only time will tell.
