Surfers gather to say farewell to Alan
THERE were emotional scenes in Bundoran on Wednesday night when more than 50 surfing friends of a man killed in a hit-and-run incident took to the water to pay tribute to him.
Alan McSherry died on a narrow road outside the town in the early hours of Sunday.
The driver of the car which hit him drove on, leaving Alan to die.
He was found by his wife Jo who had gone out to look for him when he hadn’t returned home from an evening out with friends in the Bridge Bar in Bundoran.
Last night Jo joined other family members as Alan’s friends in the surfing community in the seaside town organised a ‘Paddle Out’ in his memory.
Pictures of the emotional occasion were taken by Bundoran Lifeboat crews who also knew the 48-year-old well.
Although he was from Birkenhead near Liverpool, Alan and his wife came to Donegal on a camping holiday 17 years ago and fell in love with the place – and made their home just inside Co Leitrim.
He was hugely popular in Bundoran where he worked as a handyman doing odd jobs for many local people and businesses.
His funeral will go through Bundoran today to Mass at the Star of the Sea Church.
Alan will then be taken home to north west England for cremation.
Garda investigations into his death are continuing.
Detectives in Ballyshannon still want to hear from anyone who was in or around the Newtown Road area of Bundoran between 4.20am and 5.20am on Sunday to contact them.
