Pearse DohertySinn Féin’s Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the government must stop stalling on the Banking Inquiry and lay out its plans this week.

The Deputy has written to An Taoiseach today urging him not to kick the Inquiry into the long grass.

Deputy Doherty told Donegal Daily: “The Oireachtas has passed the legislation to allow for a banking inquiry. Earlier this summer the country was rocked by the details of the Anglo tapes which only emerged some five years after the banking crisis.

“The time has come for the government to invite all parties to sit down and hammer out the terms of references for the inquiry.

“It is clear that there is no excuse for delays and that the government must meet with the parties and lay out its plans. There is an overwhelming public interest in moving swiftly and setting up an inquiry which will get to the truth as quickly as possible. Sinn Fein wants to see that process underway immediately.

“There are many current and former members of the Dáil who have more information than they have disclosed regarding the events around the banking guarantee. All such information needs to be put in the public domain.

“For these reasons I have today written to An Taoiseach urging him to proceed without delay in calling the parties together so we can move forward on this inquiry which the public are not prepared to see kicked into the long grass.”
