Crana College has introduced the Transition Year Programme to its curriculum for the first time this year and when it was offered as an option to students who were about to sit their Junior Cert exams in June it was clear how popular the programme was going to be with students, parents and teachers.
Come September and the inaugural Crana College TY class’ enthusiasm to experience all that the course had promised has not diminished.
Their first day in school was last Wednesday and they were treated to a team building activity hosted by Adrian and his team from Just Kayak on Lough Swilly.
Students set off on a return route from Ned’s Point to Buncrana pier in two canoes and were in no doubt at the end of the challenge about how working as a team can make any task easier to complete.
The group is looking forward to a fun-packed and academic based year of activities organised by TY coordinator Ms Michelle Bradley.
Transition Year is a one-year programme between the end of the Junior Certificate and the start of a Leaving Certificate programme where students will get broad education including one day every week spent on work experience.

“I chose transition year as I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out what I want to do in the future after I finish school.
“I want to be able to build my confidence when delivering speeches and when in interviews.
“I can’t wait to see what will happen over the period of this year and be able to do extra classes that I never got to do before like creative writing which I am very excited to do.
“Cultural Activities will also be great fun as we will be able to do drama.
“I have high hopes for this year.

“I choose to do transition year because I wanted the opportunity to learn new skills that are not taught in the usual syllabus.
“As well as this I feel it will help me improve my confidence in public speaking and give me a better idea of the career choices that may suit me best.
“I’m sure it will be an enjoyable year for me and my TY classmates.

“We chose to do Transition Year so that we could gain new skills, improve self-confidence and so that we could take a look inside the working world during my work experience.
“We chose Transition Year because we want to have a better idea of what we want to do in college and want to develop our languages and be better prepared for the Leaving Cert.
