Senator Jimmy Harte is in critical condition in Beaumount Hospital in Dublin.
The well–known politician had been attending the Republic of Ireland versus Latvia soccer game at the Aviva Stadium.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital at 3am after being found with serious head injuries in Newmarket Square in the capital.
Gardai at Kevin Street are investigating the incident and are studying CCTV footage. It is unclear at this stage how he received his injuries.
It is understood the father-of-four underwent emergency surgery earlier this morning after being put into an induced coma.
The Senator’s condition is critical.
Messages of prayers and supports have flooded in for the popular Senator.

Jimmy comes from a hugely respected family in Raphoe where his dad Paddy was a TD for many years.
A Labour Party spokesman said: ”He’s being treated for serious head injuries.
“”The circumstances, as to whether he fell or something else happened, are not very clear at the moment.”
