Following the unpredictable midweek weather of hail and rain showers, weekend golfers were pleasantly surprised with the milder and somewhat warmer climate, and as the temperature rose a little, so the scoring rose steadily also.
Taking advantage of the first competition of the year being played with the aid of mats on Saturday was Hugh Tinney [17] , playing steady golf over both nines and recording a birdie at 8th, returned 21pts both outward and inwards for an overall winning score of 42pts.
Running Hugh a close second was the master of pairs competitions, Greg Sullivan [19] proving that he can also score in singles play.
Despite a disastrous double bogey at 15th, Greg’s resilliance came through when he answered that with a birdie at 16th, returning 22pts on the inward nine for an overall 41pts.
Gross prize was won by the ever present Gerard Duffy [5] with 32 gross pts.
Sunday’s confined competition was dominated by two members of Gerry O’ Sullivan’s cat. 4. members, with Paul Callaghan [25] taking first place on the rostrum.
Despite a great birdie at 13th, Paul then had an unfortunate “blank” at 14th but still had enough ammunition to return a winning 44pts.
Runner-up on Sunday was John Bradley [28] on 43pts. Playing steady cat.4. golf, John showed that he will be a force in that category next year.
Taking home the gross prize again on Sunday was the indestructable Gerard Duffy [5] with 34pts.
Congratulations once again to Letterkenny Golf Club junior members Christopher Duffy and Jack Patton on their achievement of reaching a 5 handicap.
I believe that this is the first time that the club has had both fathers [Gerard and Seamus] and sons playing off the same handicap at the same time.
Indeed, has it ever happened in any other golf club in Donegal? Well done lads, a credit to all your hard work and dedication.

The Art of Playing Golf:
“The putt is going to be holed. Believe it! Keep this thought upper-most in mind, which conveys both a sense of optimism and courage.
