Moving Mevagh Forward (MMF) is a community, voluntary and not for profit group of local people interested in improving the social, economic and cultural life of the parish of Mevagh.
With the exception of one Tús part time secretarial worker MMF members are purely voluntary and are structured as a committee.
MMF is open to all who share its aims and objectives and wish to participate. All members of the local community are encouraged to participate.
Officers have been elected from among those who regularly attend meetings.
Chairman: Myles Gallagher
Vice Chairman: Eoin McLernon
Secretary: Belinda McGroddy
Treasurers: Denis McGettigan, Noel McBride, Hugo Boyle
PRO: Marie Boyd-Clarke
In addition to progressing its own projects, MMF acts as a hub to co-ordinate the activities of the very many community, sporting and special interest groups in the area for the benefit of local population and visitors.
Tourism is a major factor in the local economy. The proposed Mevagh Community Heritage Centre development will help to integrate local and tourist events and activities for the benefit of all.
While MMF would welcome, encourage and assist, where possible, the development of industry & commerce, tourism and tourist attractions is the area where we, as a community group, believe we can have a more immediate impact.
Although we already have a wide range of facilities & activities and a whole series of significant events in the area, MMF believes that co-ordinating these activities, making accurate information available and encouraging the development of additional activities will improve the tourist potential of the area and ultimately will enhance the economic, social and cultural life of Mevagh for the benefit of all.
Among the other activities MMF are involved in directly include the visit of Santa to Teách John Mici Bán on Saturday, December 14th, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Carrigart, the production of a promotional map for the area and they have been successful, along with Carrigart Development Association, in obtaining a feasibility grant from DLDC for the Mevagh-Rosguill Peninsula Wild Life Tourism Project.
MMF have also assisted Glen Valley in their charity sporting events, Mevagh Ramblers in their Walking Festival on June Bank Holiday weekend, North West Vintage Rally in July, Carraig Arts & Culture Festival on the last weekend in August and various other activities in the area.
The construction of the Heritage Centre and the proposed museum facility for new and not so new fire-fighting equipment, based on the 28 years of the existence of a voluntary fire service in our area, and the availability of many antiques and farming implements will greatly enhance this tourist attraction.
(The parish of) Mevagh is the area to the south and east of Sheephaven Bay towards Mulroy Bay.
It includes the villages of Carrigart, Downings and Glen together with the surrounding rural land and the entire Rossguill Peninsula between Sheephaven and Mulroy bays.
A considerable part of the area is within the Gaeltacht.
