Alas, winter got it’s revenge over the weekend with most parkland courses in North-West having cancelled competitions and with Barnhill being no exception, despite the use of winter mats, it was the right and proper decision in order to “save” the greens.
Wednesday 11th competition was played in a somewhat milder climate and, being no stranger to the winners enclosure during these past winter months, it was cat. 4 handicapper Gerry Daly [21] who responded best for, despite two blanks recorded on front nine, Gerry accumulated 27pts from 9th hole inwards to return an overall 39pts.
Meanwhile, a tough battle was continuing for what turned out to be second place between two of Letterkenny’s foremost single figure handicappers Kevin Kiely [8] and Michael Collum [6].
Kevin, renowned for his total concentration and steely resolve in matchplay encounters, edged into runner-up spot by virtue of BOT by recording no less than three birdies on the back nine at 11th, 14th and 16th, but blew a possible first place when he uncharacteristically double bogeyed 17th to finish on 38pts.
Meanwhile the long hitting Michael, well known for his aggressive style of play from tee to green and again for his delicasy around it, also recorded birdies at 2nd and 11th to leave him one under gross thru 11th but unfortunately, a double bogey at 13th saw him relegated to third place.
The club’s AGM took place on Tuesday night last and the outgoing captain, Mr. Henry Mc Cahey, stated how he considered it such a priveledge and honour to have been captain for the club’s centenary year and thanked Niall O’Donnell, 2012 captain, for nominating him.
With the help of a very good team of committee and helpful members, he considered that the profile of the club had been raised enormously.
Henry then thanked the President, Barry Ramsay for his help and dedication, the competitions’ organisers’ and helpers, Danny, Greg, Enda, Eamon and P.J. for the long hours and arduous work involved.
To all the teams’ captain’s for centenary year, most of whom took their teams so near to titles and yet to be so disappointed. To Gerry O’ Sullivan who took control of the new adult members and cat. 4, and to Gerard Duffy who looked after the youth and juvenile members and raised that membership to one hundred and seventy five.
Continuing his role in 2014, we can be assured of the future of Letterkenny Golf Club.
To “Mr. Efficiency” treasurer Chris Nee, Niall O’ Donnell and Don Ponsonby for their experience and assistance throughout the year and wishing Finnian every success in his future golfing career.
Finally, to our P.R.O. Eamonn Davis for undertaking such a difficult and thankless task, but with his experience, dedication and knowledge of the newspaper industry, and his continued awareness of new editorial and picture opportunities, managed to get the club outstanding exposure in all papers, radio stations and websites.
Thanks also to our Professional Seamus Clinton and assistant Finnian O’ Dogherty for “being there” and looking after competition fees and visitors to the club.
Finally, whilst congratulating Sandra Mc Monagle on her centenary year lady captaincy, all club members would like to wish new lady captain Catherine Cooke-Harkin every success on her incoming reign.
Henry then introduced Letterkenny Golf Club’s captain for 2014, Mr. Tom Mc Donagh.
