Donegal County Councillor Ciaran Brogan said the current situation at Letterkenny General Hospital showed the hospital needs to be returned to a state-of-the-art facility as soon as possible.
Cllr Brogan, a member of the HSE Western Health Forum, said he wanted to take nothing from the hard-working staff and management.
But he said he wanted to remind people that the hospital is still in transition.
And he also said that people should not lay the blame for overcrowding and patients on trolleys at the door of staff.
“I appreciate that the situation is far from ideal and my sympathy is with people who find themselves in the hospital at present.
“But I would ask people to remember that Letterkenny General Hospital is far from the finished product.
“Staff and management are working under extreme pressure to deliver in an environment that is far from complete. Some parts of it are still a building site.
“Since the hospital was severely flooded last summer, staff have done trojan work in trying to bring the hospital services back to normal.
“If anything, on occasions like this when there is an increase in emergency patient numbers, it demonstrates the need to get the hospital back to full working capacity as quickly as possible,” he said.
