THE Irish Coast Guard and Gardaí have joined the county council in a weather warning for Co Donegal today as winds of up to 130km/hr hit.
In a statement the Coast Guard warned people to stay away from coastal paths and piers as a high tide and high winds hit.
“The Irish Coast Guard strongly advises the public not to go on exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches, promenades or any other coastal areas during the inclement weather,” said a spokesman.
Garda Traffic Corps Inspector for Co Donegal Inspector Michael Harrison warned motorists to exercise “extreme caution” over the next 24 hours.
Winds will subside by dawn on Monday, but they will remain strong with gusts of up to 100km/hr.
“Trees and other debris may be just around the next corner. Like the TV adverts say, motorists need to expect the unexpected,” he said.
Met Eireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack warned it is going to be a very windy 24 hours – with some snow and sleet likely in Donegal.
“It will remain extremely windy tonight, with strong to gale force westerly winds and with further damaging gusts in places, but especially along the Atlantic Seaboard in the west and north west,” she said.
“There will be further rain or hail showers, some heavy and prolonged, with a risk of some sleet and snow showers, early in the night.”
It’s also cold out there – hitting 0C after dark.
