The world indoor Tug of War championship are set to take place in Castlebar, Co. Mayo from the 20th – 23rd of February and the Chinese Taipei squad are coming to Donegal for a week long training camp with the Clonmany club in preparation for the championships.
The Taipei ladies team are the reigning world champions and World Games gold medallists and are an immense group of athletics.
They will be joined by their up and coming men’s team as they acclimatise and prepare in Inishowen for the week leading up to the event in Castlebar.
This is also a great opportunity for the Donegal clubs to fine tune their final preparations in their bid for medals at the Breaffy house resort in Castlebar.
This has been another successful season for the Donegal clubs and they will be hoping to finish up with a medal on the world stage.
Clonnmany B have had a particularly successful season winning the national championship at 680kg, 640kg and 600kg and Cockhill from Buncrana made it a clean sweep for the Donegal team by winning gold at 560kg.
Carndonagh will also compete at the upcoming championships in Mayo.
The training for all three teams is very intense at the moment as the athletes hope to maximise their strength and stamina while maintaining their lightest weight possible in a bid to get their strongest teams into the various weight categories.
The athletes will weigh-in individually on Wednesday with the club championship taking place on Thursday and Friday.
The World international championships take place on Saturday and Sunday the 22nd & 23rd of February.
Donegal people will have an opportunity to see the Chinese Taipei teams in action in a competition organised by ‘Big Danny McGonigle’ in St. Brigids Hall in Clonmany on Thursday night the 13th of February from 8pm on-wards.
Come along to meet and greet with these world class athletes and also have the opportunity to see the Donegal teams in action in the week before the big event in Castlebar.
