Dunfanaghy Golf Club Notes
The weather was improved this weekend after the snow on Wednesday.
It was great to see the course full on both Saturday and Sunday.
The new bunkers look impressive and will be a great addition to the course later in the year.
The challenge cup final was played on Sunday between Nigel Doherty and Daniel Gallagher. The match was all square going up the last and Daniel won on the 18th hole.
It was a keenly contested match-play final with six holes won by Daniel and five holes won by Nigel. Daniel was three over for his round.
He has played numerous different golfers throughout this competition giving away a lot of shots in most matches and still came up trumps.
Nigel battled well until the end and made Daniel work hard for the victory.
Well done Daniel, you deserve your victory.

Valentines Night function
There was a great crowd at the Valentine’s night at the Clubhouse on Saturday night.
From speaking to people who were there, it was a great night and everyone was entertained.
The wine and chess table went down a treat. Everyone has commented how well the night was organised by Bill and Paula Mc Callion.
They were all impressed with the attention to detail.
The music entertainment was provided by Bill, William Hamilton and Nigel Doherty and they could get gigs anywhere judging by the standard of music that was delivered that night.
We also had a number of different people who got up and sang a song including our Captain Gerald, Vice Captain Vaughan.
If you missed out on this night, don’t worry we are hoping to organise a night on Saturday the 15th of March (Paddy’s weekend) and we will keep you posted.
The Men’s and ladies Captains would like to thank Bill and Paula for the hard work they put into organising the event.
The raffle on the night also made over €300 and will be put to good use in the clubhouse.
Our Captain Gerald and Vice Captain, Vaughan are going to be in the clubhouse this Friday evening from 5pm onwards.
This is a new initiative where two or three members will try to bring their friends or family along to the clubhouse on a Friday evening to show what a great place it is to come for a drink.
This is not confined to friends of Vaughan and Gerald and it would be great to see a crowd in the clubhouse this Friday evening.
Again there will be free bites for everyone. What better way to start the weekend. No doubt everyone will be discussion the rugby matches that happen at the weekend.
Don’t forget to come to the clubhouse on Saturday or Sunday if you want to watch the Rugby or soccer games.
Also we are going to have a curry on the menu instead of the stew for the special this weekend (very keen price).
Competitions this week
From the 1st of February all balls landing on the fairway will have to be lift, clean, drop and place in the semi-rough until further notice.
This is to ensure the fairways are in excellent conditions for the summer months.
Wednesday 19th February: Open Single’s Stableford (Soup & Sandwiches)
Saturday 22nd February: Open 4BBB competition
Sunday 23rd February: Monthly Medal Stableford Competition
Don’t forget there are prizes for nines and a prize for over 19 handicap in all singles competitions at the club.
We are half way through February in the Four Person Team event.
Make sure to give it a go this month as everyone will want to qualify for the final and we are running out of months.
Also the timesheet for the mixed foursomes is filling up. Please get your name down before Paddy’s weekend when the draw takes place.
The Gaeltacht league Team was called off at Cruit Golf Club last Saturday Morning. We hope to arrange a match for Saturday the 1st of March 2013.
Gerald or Andy will be in touch with everyone before hand.
Dunfanaghy Golf club Ladies notes
The Lady Captain, Cheryl Chambers, convened her first committee meeting of the new season on Friday 14th February to prepare for the forthcoming season.
Over the coming months, the committee are planning to organise various events including rules nights, guest speakers and maybe a visit from a professional mind coach!
While Lady Golfers across the province have had much of their golf curtailed by the recent period of unseasonably wet weather, the members of Dunfanaghy have been lucky that the course has remained open, enabling the all weather golfers to play in their weekly competitions.
Although, the West Coast Alliance was played on Saturday 15th February, the course was very wet and the windy conditions led to low scoring.
Robyn Mc Connell, Dunfanaghy claimed first prize with 30 points.
Dates for your diary:
Saturday 22nd February First Club Medal of the season
Tuesday 4th March Betty Hennessey’s Captain’s Day, Winter Links Open
Saturday 15th March Donegal Shield Qualifier.
The Shield will be played for on Saturday 26th April at Donegal Golf Club at Murvagh.
For the fair-weather golfers amongst you, note that the clocks will go forward on Saturday 29th March.
Time to start thinking about dusting down your clubs in preparation for the longer nights and the (hopefully) warmer, drier spring weather.
The Team Captains will soon be needing you to be match fit! The draws for the Private Home Care Interclub matches are listed on the ILGU website.

Juvenile results
After a few weeks of no golf due to the bad weather the juvenile members were back out again last Saturday on a dry but windy morning.
Despite the wind some excellent golf was played with Carlos O Reilly coming out on top and Max Roarty winning the Cadet Section.
Let’s hope we get a run of a few good Saturday mornings to make up for the ones we lost.
