Reflection

The gospel for this Sunday is the Transfiguration (Luke 9:28b-36). This is a story of encouragement and hope. The apostles who are with Jesus are given a glimpse of him in his glory. Unsurprisingly the apostles want to hold on to a wonderful experience – Peter wants to build tents. We can sympathise with the apostles. We would all like to be able to hold on to the moment of glory. The reality, as Jesus knows and the apostles come to realise is that the glory only comes ultimately through the passion and death of Jesus.

Moments of hope and glory sustain us through the difficult times – that is what this gospel, the Transfiguration is all about. How does this gospel relate to my own life experience?

When I look back over my life have there been moments when my faith has been something bright and shining, something which gives strength, hope and direction to my life?

What are the life experiences that stand out with special significance? Perhaps it is in a particular friendship, the birth of a child, an experience of healing and forgiveness.

What have been the moments over the last day, the last week that have given me joy and strength? Give thanks to God for those moments.

There are little transfiguration moments of hope and glory in every day – perhaps in very quiet, gentle ways. During Lent in this Year of Faith we are invited to become more and more aware of how active God is in our lives. We could each spend a few moments at night looking back over the day to catch a glimpse of where God has been present and active in our life, through the love of a friend, a sense of peace, a trouble faced, beauty recognised – these are the moments that can sustain us through life’s challenges.
