A man has been charged after causing criminal damage in the house he shares with his fiancée in Donegal.
The man, who is in his 30s, appeared before Letterkenny District Court in connection with an incident at a residence in late March.
Damage to the value of €350 was caused.
The man represented himself and told Judge Éiteáin Cunningham that he did not want a solicitor.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that gardai responded to a call of a domestic nature at 6.35am.
When gardai knocked on the door, they observed a male in a pair of white pyjama bottoms “smashing a number of items”.
“He was lifting the couch and smashing all the items around him,” Sergeant Collins said.
Multiple items of furniture and crockery were damaged, the court was told. The dry lining on a wall was also damaged.
The man was arrested and conveyed to a garda station.
The man’s partner was present in the house at the time.
Addressing the court, the defendant – who has no previous convictions – said what happened was “out of character” and “a one-time incident”.
He told Judge Cunningham that the property is his home address and he and the woman are together. He said he would compensate for the damage caused.
A victim impact statement is to be canvassed from the woman.
The matter was adjourned to May 26 for the payment of the compensation.
If this is completed, Judge Cunningham said she would deal with the matter “in a certain way”.
