THIEVES have targeted a community group in the latest horrendous crime here in Co Donegal.
Two men broke into the Lifford/Clonleigh Resource Centre on Thursday, shortly after 11pm, and forced the safe off the wall, escaping with all the monies and contents.
“These men got away with a substantial amount of money from the Community Development Project which is a local Community Project relying solely on fundraising to keep the much needed services and initiatives going,” said centre co-ordinator Brid Foley.
“Monies in the safe included approx €200 fundraised by the local youth group, on Sunday at the Xmas Craft event.
“Through weekly donations, the local women’s group had over €300 euro in the safe waiting for a member to lodge it.”
A very recent initiative of the Centre was opening a Charity Shop as another means of generating income and the float and takings were also secured in the safe.
“It is despicable that anyone would steal from vulnerable groups and a community project, struggling under this current economic climate, to gather enough money to keep going – Shame on them” added Brid Foley, Centre Co-ordinator.
The Centre is asking anyone who have saw two men acting suspiciously on Thursday evening between 11pm – 11.30pm, around the grounds of the Resource Centre, to contact the Gardai.
